I turned our home into a playground during lockdown: one parent’s guide to keeping kids happy indoors – The Guardian

    - June 24, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Lockdown meant reimagining the home through new eyes (picture posed by models).Photograph: wundervisuals/Getty Images

Before any of us had heard the phrase lockdown, my parenting style was very much of the Lets go variety. Lets go ... to the park/cinema/museum/anywhere that will get us out of this small flat and make us feel like were not stifling your childhoods with our inability to afford a garden.

As Spain and Italy locked down with draconian measures, we could feel the panic rising: how would my partner, Steven, and I keep seven-year-old Betty and 18-month-old Rosa occupied with no childcare, no family or friends, no private outside space and no throw-money-at-the-problem excursions while trying to hold down our own jobs?

The answer unfolded during the first week of lockdown when I told my mum how frustrated Betty was by Hurricane Rosa, the toddler who destroys everything in her wake, shoving small toys in her mouth at superfast speed. Mum suggested we empty Bettys higher bookshelves so she could use them to play with her Sylvanian Families in peace. For the uninitiated, these are toy figures of rabbits, bears and mice who have homes, furniture whole communities in fact.

What started as a basic school soon evolved into an ambitious recreation of Malory Towers-meets-Hogwarts, with a dormitory, head teachers office, infirmary, canteen and swimming pool complete with tap water. As Betty became ever more invested, so did I, and together we became increasingly imaginative, turning my bedside cabinet into a luxury department store with a rigged-up LED night light and mood music from Classic FM. We then moved on to restaurants and bakeries using bits and pieces I bought from every corner of the internet (day or night, I was able to check out securely using PayPal): so we had cakes made from Blu Tack, sequins for biscuits, scraps of material for tablecloths.

In a world that felt as if it was spinning out of control, there was real comfort in having total mastery of our own tiny domain.

It was then that the lightbulb moment struck: if we were going to be locked down, then we needed to totally rethink the small world that we were living in rather than mourning the bigger loss. From seeing everyday items through new eyes to rearranging furniture, we realised our flat had so much potential that wed never appreciated before.

For Rosa, who was literally climbing the walls and coffee table, we dragged the cushions off the sofa, blankets from drawers and piled them in the middle of the floor so she could face plant on them repeatedly without upsetting the downstairs neighbours. Inspired by fiveminutemum.com, we then invested in bubbles, pipe cleaners and tiny pom-poms that she could sort and play with.We even bought some toddler-friendly crayons at 5am one morning, checking out quickly with PayPal while simultaneously warming up milk and manically trying to keep Rosa occupied. Theres nothing like a pandemic to give you a newfound delight in the breadth of stuff you can buy.

Each room, which before felt confining, opened up with possibilities. Rosa was in her element in an empty bath playing with pots, pans and beakers plus a jug of water while I sat on the bathroom floor catching up on family admin for a full 20 minutes. When I was in the kitchen cooking, she helped by threading dry spaghetti through the holes in a colander. It not only kept her happy, it did wonders for her hand-to-eye coordination.

Meanwhile, Betty inspired by how-to-draw videos by childrens illustrator Rob Biddulph found a new power in creating her own bedroom art gallery and started to render friends and family in paper form so that she could play with them an idea both lovely and heartbreaking. A friend lent us their tent, which we popped up in the sitting room so Betty and Steven could have an indoor sleepover one Saturday night. Lucky Steven.

If this all sounds too Waltons to be true then it is. Its not the full story: Betty also now has an addiction to the computer game Stardew Valley and Rosas fifth word is telly, which she shouts repeatedly as she shoves the remote control at our heads.

Were not nailing this thing by a long stretch, as our downstairs neighbours will attest to. But weve realised that the external draw of the organised fun isnt always the answer; that actually unleashing creativity helped us through a tricky and confusing time. Our imagination was fuelled by theirs and vice versa. I hope its something we remember to take with us into the future.

Fast and simple online paymentsWhen time is at a premium and its hard to get even a few seconds to yourself, the speed of PayPal Checkout makes life that little bit easier

Patriots Sony Michel had deck stacked against him from Day 1 in the NFL – Musket Fire

    - June 24, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

FOXBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS - JANUARY 04: Sony Michel #26 of the New England Patriots carries the ball as they take on the Tennessee Titans in the first half of the AFC Wild Card Playoff game at Gillette Stadium on January 04, 2020 in Foxborough, Massachusetts. (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images)

Being a first-round draft pick in the NFL is both a blessing and a curse.

On the one hand, its every college players dream to have their name get called on Thursday night of the NFL Draft. After all, thats the ultimate form of validation and respect youre well-regarded enough that a professional football team is spending their prized first-round pick on you during primetime television.

On Day 2 (Friday), the second and third rounds of the Draft occur. This is usually where teams find the most value and bang for their buck in terms of quality players who might have gone Round 1 if it werent for injuries or off-the-field concerns.

By Day 3 (Saturday), its usually like throwing darts against the wall and just hoping one of them hits a bullseye. One need look no further than the example of the New England Patriots taking a chance on Tom Brady with the 199th pick in the 2000 NFL Draft (sixth round) to realize just how random and magical those types of picks really are in the later rounds.

Its much more common to see high-impact players who are drafted in the early rounds find immediate success in the league.

Yes, there are certainly plenty of busts.

But overall, youre much more likely to find hundreds and hundreds of players drafted in the mid-to-late rounds who never amounted to anything substantial than you are to find first-round draft picks who were bonafide busts in the NFL.

Sony Michel is an interesting case.

ESPNs Mike Reiss recently posited that Michel has been hurt by his first-round perception over the past two years (really, just the past year). Reiss claims that had Michel been selected two picks later making him a second-rounder instead of a fringe first-rounder would the perception of his first two seasons be viewed a bit differently? I say yes.

Indeed, Michel was selected No. 31 overall back in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Patriots. He was just two picks away from going in the second round and on Day 2 of that years event.

    Honestly, he perhaps should have.

Hindsight is 20/20, but consider the only other running backs who went in the first round that year: Saquon Barkley to the Giants and Rashaad Penny to the Seahawks. Barkley obviously remains a slam dunk two years later and an excellent value even at No. 2 overall, whereas Penny looks like a bust considering Chris Carsons emergence.

Michel should be considered a solid pick, given the fact hes rushed for nearly 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons in the league. He also did so last year with an offensive line that was decimated by injuries not to mention, he also lost his No. 1 and No. 2 fullbacks to IR (James Develin and Jakob Johnson).

And yet, the perception around the NFL is that Michel is already on thin ice after just two seasons particularly, since his yards per carry average seriously dipped from Year 1 to Year 2.

Theres no denying that Michels second season was nowhere near as productive as his first. But lets be honest and also admit that itwasnt nearly as bad as many people think it was.

I tend to side with Reiss way of thinking, and I have for a while now. If Michel was drafted on Day 2 or Day 3, we wouldnt even be talking about a second year slump.

Wed all be thanking our lucky stars we found such great value on a Friday or Saturday in the draft at running back, and wed be licking our chops at the idea of Michel behind a stalwart offensive line with a capable fullback in front of him again in 2020.

After all, those are the same ingredients he had in 2018 and we all know what happened that year, and just how instrumental he was to the Patriots success then.

It really is just a matter of perception. Michel was a first-round draft pick, so hes expected to be the engine of the offense. Hopefully, he will be just that this fall.

If hes not though, lets cut him a little slack assuming he puts up anywhere near another 1,000 yards on the ground and six or more touchdowns. The Patriots have enough depth at the position that they dont need Michel to be their own version of Saquon Barkley a do-it-all, transcendent talent that the offense lives and dies by.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Finds Its Canadian TV and Streaming Homes – ComicBook.com

    - June 24, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Star Trek: Lower Decks has found its Canadian home. The animated comedy series that may feature some returning characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation will air on CTV Sci-Fi and stream on Crave in Canada when it debuts later this year. This announcement shouldn't surprise Canadian Star Trek fans. CTV Sci-Fi and Crave are the television and streaming homes of Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard. It seems parent company Bell Media is happy to stay in the Star Trek business. Star Trek: Lower Decks will stream exclusively on CBS All Access, home of Discovery and Picard, in the United States.

Mike McMahan, formerly of Rick and Morty, created Lower Decks. He's recently spoken about his approach to bringing comedy to the Star Trek universe.

"A big thing that was important to me was figuring out how do we comedically access these characters," McMahan says. "How can these characters be funny and not break Star Trek? You can't have a Morty in Star Trek. You can't just have a stupid person in Starfleet, otherwise, it breaks the aspirational paradigm of what humanity is like in Starfleet. So our leads are foils for each other, but they're very much ingrained in Star Trek."

McMahan also offered some new details about the crew of the USS Cerritos. "You have Ensign Beckett Mariner, who is sort of like our Tom Cruise/Maverick, where she's amazing at Starfleet stuff, and she's incredibly knowledgeable, but she just hates following the rules and she bristles at the military structure," he says. "She wants to do whatever she wants. She's kind of like Captain Kirk if Kirk wasn't a captain and didn't have the power. Kirk would follow his gut, and she followers her gut.

"Then, Ensign Brad Boimler also knows everything about sci-fi stuff, and is also an amazing Starfleet crew member, but he's so by-the-book and so burdened by following the rules that he can't follow his gut. So the comedic friction there is that they both want the same thing, they're both good at this stuff, but emotionally and from a human level, they're completely different about how they do it."

McMahan also offered a message for fans worried that a comedy series doesn't fit into the Star Trek franchise. "Star Trek has always had comedy in it," he says. "Every series of Star Trek has funny characters, funny episodes, and those always live in the B-stories for the most part. That, to me, is what I love about Star Trek. So it's really taking that aspect of it and letting that shine. I can't wait for you guys to see it, because it's one of my favorite things I've ever made. It feels like it fell out of another dimension in the 90s where they were making a funny Next Generation era show."

Star Trek: Lower Decks debuts in 2020.

Disclosure: ComicBook is owned by CBS Interactive, a division of ViacomCBS.

Every Legends of Runeterra patch 1.4 nerf and buff – Dot Esports

    - June 24, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Season of Fortune, Legends of Runeterras next ranked season launches with the games 1.4 patch later today. It will contain a number of adjustments that are likely to shake up the meta.

Balance changes in the update include a focus on improving underutilized Epic units and champions, buffs to the Freljord region, and an adjustment to steal effects. Nab is a new mechanic in LoR, replacing the previous steal-from-deck effect. Instead of removing cards from the top of an opponents deck, Nab removes them from the bottom. The intention is to reduce drawing buffed cards from an opponent or possibly increasing their chance to top-deck a champion.

The focus on the Freljord region has been long overdue, despite the recent popularity of Sejuani. Anivia was once the queen of Control decks and Braum hasnt seen a good amount of gameplay since the open beta. Adjustments to both champions in the update should shift back into top-tier status. From champion buffs to Epic units like Jae Mederda, heres every nerf and buff taking place within the LoR 1.4 update.

Hoping to increase playability for certain LoR champions, adjustments were made to Darius, Anivia, and Braum.

The increase to Darius health only affects his leveled up form. Considering most players dont bring him into play until he levels up, though, this buff is a big deal. Expect to see Darius once again in Midrange Noxus builds and even potentially in Burn decks as a solid finisher.

Since the release of Rising Tides, Anivia was often overlooked due to her casting cost of seven. The Riot team compared her to Nautilus and a leveled-up Karma and decided to reduce her cost by one. Expect Frost Control decks to return within the meta.

Braum was given a total overhaul, increasing his cost and power level , while also adjusting his text. Braum was always at his best when spitting out Poros after being dealt damage, so the LoR team made it his baseline and leveled up ability. His cost increase takes this into account, along with his power of one at baseline and a +1/+1 when leveled.

A total of five LoR Epic units are getting adjustments in the upcoming 1.4 update. Cards with Nab have been changed, and a major nerf was applied to Black Market Merchant, reducing his health by one.

Genevieve Elmheart is often overlooked in Scout builds and other Midrange decks due to other six-cost Demacia cards like Cithria the Bold. The LoR team has increased her stats in hoping that shell have an impact on the Standard Constructed meta. As a 5/4, Swiftwing Lancer sees play; and as a 5/5 with Scout, so might Genevieve Elmheart.

The intentional design behind Captain Farron was to use him as a finisher against slow decks. His original text had a player discard their hand in order to turn those cards in Decimates. Now he creates three Decimates upon being summoned, instead. The change to Captain Farron will likely earn him gameplay in Noxus Burn decks as a solid finisher.

She Who Wanders received an added Keyword, Regeneration. A change like this may have an impact on Freljord Control decks.

Ren Shadwoblade is a powerful Ionian Epic card. His cost reduction will allow him to get played more often in Ephemeral builds, but his power and health decrease will increase his vulnerability to removal.

Jae Mederda has an awesome ability that was often overlooked due to his casting cost. A reduction from eight to six makes him more accessible and will likely create cantrip thats worth putting him P&Z Control builds.

Endure decks have taken a slight hit, but the cost increase wont likely change its tier status.

A nerf to Escaped Abomination not only increases the vulnerability of the card to removal, but also reduces its survivability upon being blocked.

Sea Monster builds wont get hit too hard with the nerf to Dreg Dredgers. It will reduce the Deep decks early game presence, but not enough to hurt the overall build.

Bilgewater Keg decks are fun to play, but the LoR team wants them viable in competitive play as well. An increase in health to Petty Officer wont likely make that happen. It will, however, work nicely in those meme decks.

A nerf to Black Market Merchant will improve the health of the overall LoR meta. Hes more vulnerable to removal at one health and will likely get taken out within a turn or two at most.

Of the six spells adjusted in the LoR 1.4 update, The Harrowing and Unyielding Spirit will have the greatest impact. A buff to Super Mega Death Rocket will also increase Jinx builds, as it only costs one spell mana to cast it now.

Below Deck’s Jessica More Reveals Behind-the-Scenes Filming Secrets – inTouch Weekly

    - June 24, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Spilling the tea! Below Deck MediterraneanstarJessica Morereveals behind-the-scenes secrets while filming aboardTheWellingtonin an exclusive interview withIn Touch. I just know theres cameras everywhere, she shares.

Whether its an actual cameraman or its placed on the wall somewhere or propped up somewhere theres always a camera in sight, Jessica, who is the third stew, explains.Theres zero privacy unless youre going to the restroom. Well, thats a relief!

Despite the lack of peace and quiet, Jessica said the cameras are always rolling leaving no room for slackers. The most challenging for me is going non-stop, literally, she shares. Im the type of person that needs my downtime to myself, so it was a challenge to constantly being on. It was a challenge to always have to be on.

Although the crew gets an hour or two [hour] break in which they might get lucky enough to fall asleep, its never enough. Itd be exhausting, Jessica recalls. I think youre running off of adrenaline the whole time.

Jessica explains life as a yachtie, especially onBelow Deck, is not something you can study for. I had the experience. I had been doing yachting for like three years but its one of those where you can never be prepared in time for a charter in 24 hours, whatever that time span is. So you just got to do what you got to do.

Once you step aboard, You hit the ground running and you dont even really get too much of a chance to figure out how things work, she continues.

Although life onThe Wellington is anxiety-ridden, its not much different from other mega-yachts. Listen all yachts are stressful because youre handling a chunk of money it feels like and its always intense the clients, the owners, the guests, whomever they always want the best service and you want to provide that to them, the Bravo star says. But then theres still that level of fun. I feel like the spirit that a lot of yachties have is wanting to have fun, so its that whole mentality of work hard play hard. So the work environment is stressful but its fun.

MTG Core Set 2021 Limited archetypes and themes – Dot Esports

    - June 24, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2021 (M21) launches this week. That means its time to talk about the sets Limited archetypes and themes so you can build the best deck possible.

Heres what you need to know about the upcoming set.

As with most Core sets, M21 has 10 dual-color archetypes and signpost uncommons to send players in the right direction.

Azorius decks are all about controlling the ground game and winning by taking to the skies. Common playables like Mistral Singer and Gale Swooper get some major backup by this decks signpost uncommon, Watcher of the Spheres. Just dont forget to draft some solid ground blockers like a late-pack Wishcoin Crab.

Embrace the dark side with Dimir this season by bringing dead things back to life. The first step is to fill the graveyard with cards like Rousing Read or this decks signpost uncommon, Obsessive Stitcher. Then, bring back your best cards with the selfsame Stitcher or equally playable Rise Again. Look for powerful synergies in cards like Archfiends Vessel or simply raw power like Gloom Sower.

Sacrificing your own creatures for profit is the gameplan for Rakdos decks in M21. Pick a handful of enablers like Goblin Arsonist and Deathbloom Thallid, then go all-in on attacking with the signpost Dire Fleet Warmonger and Hobblefiend. You could also get straight value by casting Village Rites and Goremand.

Gruul decks go big or go home. Four power is the sweet spot as usual for M21 and cards like Turret Ogre and Bone Pit Brute are the perfect creatures to power up this deck. Throw in value like Ornery Dilophosaur and the mana-generating signpost uncommon Leafkin Avenger. What is there to do with all that mana? Go even bigger.

Make sure to bring some extra dice if youre playing Selesnya this season because +1/+1 counters are all over this deck. Early plays like Pridemalkin and Makeshift Battalion get the counter train rolling, then get bolstered by creatures like Basris Acolyte and removal like Hunters Edge. Payoffs in the form of Wildwood Scourge and signpost uncommon Conclave Mentor are playable at any point in the game and can get out of control quickly.

Orzhov cares about gaining life, and in M21, the magic number is three. Gain three by using cards like Revitalize or take risks with Tavern Swindler. This deck looks geared more toward a controlling style of gameplay, so pack in plenty of removal. Then, get cards back with Sanguine Indulgence or build a finisher using Light of Promise. Signpost uncommon Indulging Patrician gives your deck inevitability, so feel free to play defense.

This decks signpost, Twinblade Assassins, gets straight to the point: Golgari decks want things dead. Sometimes, thats from combat, but you can also just use signature black removal spells like Finishing Blow and Grasp of Darkness. True to form, these decks get the most benefit from death, evidenced by cards like Caged Zombie and Sabretooth Mauler.

Drawing cards is great and Simic decks are going to be drawing in spades. Draw a little with Frantic Inventory or draw a lot with Read the Tides. You can even draw by attacking with Library Larcenist. Payoffs come in green in the form of Gnarled Sage, Burlfist Oak, and the decks signpost, Lorescale Coatl.

Set up your Izzet decks to explode by getting Prowess creatures on the board early. Blue and red have a handful to grab, including Jeskai Elder, Shipwreck Dowser, Mistral Singer, Heartfire Immolator, and the super-Prowess creature Spellgorger Weird. Then, unload your hand of cheap spells for an all-out attack using Shock, Crash Through, and Unsubstantiate. This decks signpost uncommon, Experimental Overload, plays a nice follow-up role, allowing you to create a big elemental and reload one of your best spells.

Make lots of creatures if youre Boros in M21 because youll need them. Red White is all about going wide, so invest early in small attackers like Igneous Cur and the pairs signpost uncommon, Alpine Houndmaster. Mid-game token plays like Valorous Steed and Falconer Adept are also welcome. Then, finish the game with a bang by empowering your attackers using Bolt Hound and Warded Battlements.

There are several other draft-around themes for this set that are possible, though they mostly require specific cards as opposed to more general colors. If you see those cards, feel free to give it a try. But be warned that these decks are much more difficult to get working right.

Shrines are back in the form of M21s Sanctum cycle. All five colors are represented by these Legendary uncommons and theres even a five-color rare to unite them: Sanctum of All.

The weakness of Shrine decks is also their strength: nobody else can get value from them. Youll need to draft a lot, but nobody else will want them. They also require all five colors of mana, so make sure to grab fixing like Prismite along with gainlands. The green Sanctum of Fruitful Harvest is also a high pick for the same reason. This deck is powerful once it gets going, but its also a big puzzle to complete before your opponent can kill you.

M21 also added a rule change to the game, replacing the Hound creature type with Dog to coincide with the approaching JumpStart set. One particular rare in M21, Pack Leader, stands out as a top doggo to draft around.

This deck is essentially an RW go-wide deck that focuses on drafting good boys and attacking with them alongside Pack Leader. Roleplayers like Rambunctious Mutt and Selfless Savior add additional fire to this dogpile.

Kate Chastain Reveals Which Charter Guests She Often Stayed in Touch with After Below Deck – Bravo

    - June 24, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

On Below Deck, no one seems to have more interaction with the charter guests than the chief stew, and Kate Chastain definitely had some memorable experiences with everyone who climbed aboard the yacht in all of her six seasons on the show. However, there was one group of charter guests who really captured the chief stew's heart like no other.

The Twitter account for Peacock recently shared an iconic Below Deck moment to let you know you can find the nautical series on NBCUniversal's new streaming service when it launches July 15. The clip featured the Season 4 moment when deckhand Kyle Dixon dressed in drag and joined one of the charter guests for an epic lip sync on top of the yacht.

Kate replied to Peacock's tweet and shared some behind-the-scenes intel on what happened with the charter guests after Season 4. "I loved these guests so much! We actually stayed in touch and went out together often in NYC," Kate revealed on Twitter. "Theyre AMAZING event planners."

It looks like we're in for another unforgettable set of charter guests on Below Deck Mediterranean, which airs new episodes Mondays at 9/8c. Check out a preview below, and catch up on the entire series through the Bravo app.

Magic: The Gathering The Most Commonly Built Competitive Decks – Den of Geek UK

    - June 24, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Cavalier of Thorns, a mythic rare from the 2020 Core Set, has also been known to appear. It is a 5 converted mana, 5/6 knight with reach that discards five top cards of the deck when cast.

    Average Overall Price: $106

Always be wary of the monoliths of red and black in standard. These decks are often cheap, cheerful, and seriously irritating to play against as they weaponize inexpensive combos to put you out of business.

A rare heavy aggro black deck is currently quite popular, using the aforementioned Lurrus, as well as Ikoria mythic rare Fiend Artisan. For 2-black-or-green, Fiend Artisan is a 1/1 that gets +1/+1 for each creature in your graveyard, and has the power to sacrifice creatures to summon other creatures for the same converted mana cost. At around $17, the Fiend brings plenty of bang for the buck.

The tricky Rankle, Master of Pranks is another mainstay, a mythic rare from Throne of Eldraine floating around $12 or so. The 3/3 creature with flying and haste forces each player to discard a card, lose one life or sacrifice a creature every time it deals damage, a true agent of chaos. On the cheaper end, Ravnica Allegiance rare Gutterbones is a steady frontline troop, a 1-black 2/1 that can be returned from the graveyard to your hand any time you can play a sorcery if your opponent has lost life. At $2.50, you can have a full platoon without breaking the bank.
