Heres some straight scoop for you.

Yes, the virus lives on surfaces door handles, countertops, clothing, furniture and much more. How long the virus survives on a given surface varies from hours to days, depending on numerous factors.

Yes, you can become infected with the virus after touching a contaminated surface.

But no, its not likely you would get sick that way especially if you diligently practice good hand hygiene.

We keep saying the same things your mother taught you when you were growing up, said OSF HealthCares Lori Grooms, director of Infection Prevention and Control, Quality and Safety. Frequent hand washing throughout the day is the best way to protect yourself.

Touching objects will not make you sick

The consensus among experts is that COVID-19 spreads primarily from person to person, via those famous respiratory droplets. We emit these microscopic particles when we breathe. We emit them in increasing quantity, and send them further distances, when we talk, sing, shout, cough or sneeze.

Thats why wearing a mask and social distancing are recommended best practices.

So, how do surfaces come into play?

First, those droplets land where they land: carpet, desktops, keyboards, clothes, furniture, etc. If you touch a droplet, whatever bacteria or virus is in the droplet can be transmitted to the next thing you touch. That might be a doorknob or it might be your mouth.

Which is why good hand hygiene is so important.

This is a respiratory virus. It mainly attacks your respiratory system, so it needs to have contact with a mucus membrane, such as in your nose, mouth or eyes, Grooms said.

In other words, simply touching a contaminated surface will not make you sick. The problem starts when you use unwashed or unsanitized hands to eat or scratch your nose or rub your eyes.

Even then, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said that such contact is not believed to be the main way the virus spreads.

Listen to Mom: Wash your hands

How much virus is concentrated on a surface? How long has it been there? Has the virus been exposed to direct sunlight? What is the air temperature and humidity?

All of these are factors affecting the relative risks that come with touching surfaces.

We cant know all of the answers, so its best to be safe and follow Moms admonition.

But we should not worry about everything we touch on a trip to the store. We dont need to wipe down every pizza box or postal package we bring into our home.

The likelihood of picking up coronavirus from a cardboard package is very slim, Grooms said.

Its been shown the virus can survive 24 hours on cardboard, but that doesnt mean its present in a level where it will cause infection. Just wash your hands after you handle the package.

The same goes for your groceries, whether you have them delivered or go to the store yourself.

Wash your fresh items, like, fruits and vegetables, Grooms said. Things that are not in sealed packages like, broccoli, onions, oranges you should always be cleaning anyway. Its not necessary to clean prepackaged items. The virus can live on those surfaces, but you dont consume all your groceries in one day. Chances are, even if the virus was there, it will die off before you touch the package again.

That said, always clean your hands before and after you prepare food and before you consume food, she said.

Dont shake your dirty laundry

The virus can live on fabric, such as clothing or on your sofa.

But cloth really isnt an effective mode of transmission, Grooms said. You would have to touch the specific spot and then touch your eyes, nose or mouth.

One precaution with fabric Grooms does advise: Dont shake out your clothes and linens. If the virus is present, shaking will send particles into the air to be inhaled. Instead, gently place the items in a pile of dirty laundry.

Then wash your hands and wipe down the counter top. And go about your life.

We cant live in a world where were paranoid to touch things, Grooms said. The best thing you can do is what your mother told you: Wash your hands.

Like HGTVs reality show Good Bones, local renovation specialists ICON Custom Builders have a real passion for transforming older homes into stunning remodels.

Readers may remember meeting ICONs Chuck Hicks and Shawn Bowman-Hicks five years ago when the couple invited Winston-Salem Monthlys Step Inside team into their recently remodeled home in Buena Vista (Open House, May 2015). Always on the lookout for the next renovation, they discovered a home right around the corner from them on one of their favorite streets Roslyn Road.

Hidden from view, the couple didnt even know the house was there until they discovered a For Sale sign.

Shawn was the one who saw the wonderful white brick cottage behind the trees and bushes and dreamed of saving it, Chuck says.

After two years of waiting, and with a promise not to tear the house down, their patience and persistence won the day; ICON Custom Builders was the proud owner of a home that had been in the Vogler family since 1936. In need of some serious TLC, or as Chuck describes it, A total and complete renovation from top to bottom, ICONs in-house architect, David Meyer, got to work on renovation plans.

We wanted to honor the original house design, he says, to renovate it in a way that looked like it had always been there.

As workers began to take the house down to the studs, Chuck reached out to his friend, neighbor, and interior designer Amanda Hiatt, and asked if she would be interested in taking a look inside. ICON had just finished a major kitchen remodel for the Hiatts, and Chuck and Shawn were impressed with Amandas design talent.

For years I walked past that home and wanted so badly to see inside, she says.

Overgrown with ivy and azaleas, Hiatt had always imagined the hidden house as a secret cottage and just knew it must have had a powerful backstory. To no ones surprise, Hiatt was hooked the moment she walked through the door.

Chuck and Hiatt agreed that the primary goal of the renovation was to preserve the historical integrity of the house and create a home for a modern family to enjoy. Walking the thin line between making conservative design choices and remaining true to her own design integrity, Hiatt occasionally pushed the envelope in pursuit of the wow factor.

Like the paint color in the libary, she says with a smile. The painter must have said Are you sure? a dozen times.

Of course, Hiatt dreamed of bolder choices in some rooms, but in the end the classic looks she created like navy cabinetry and white quartz countertops made design statements of their own.

For the two new bathrooms added to the second floor, David Meyer designed an accommodating side dormer to match the steep front gables of the house. And when the decision to open up the first floor staircase was made, he again borrowed from existing handrail and baluster designs from a second floor stair.

Helping to meet the challenges of a new kitchen design created from four smaller rooms was Jenny Roush Newman with West End Cabinet Company.

It was a space in stark contrast to any open kitchen concept, she says.

Instead, the cabinet designer helped create a beautiful transitional kitchen that boasts, among other things, an original breakfast nook transformed into a large butlers pantry with ample storage and a wet bar.

The finished renovation proved to be a perfect balance of historical charm and modern amenities. Chuck, Shawn, and ICON were happy to hear from so many Vogler friends and neighbors who were excited to see what had been accomplished and they couldnt believe it was the same house. In addition to being showcased on the Home Builders Associations Parade of Homes and playing host to a soiree for members of the Buena Vista Sipping Society, ICON hosted a luncheon for its employees, subcontractors, suppliers, and associates as an expression of their gratitude.

I still run by it often, says Hiatt of her secret cottage. But now I just smile knowing that shes doing just fine.

When a historic home is infused with modern conventions in the heart of Kenilworth, there are no words to describe it. But there may be music.

Known by its neighbors as the wedding cake house because of the beautiful plaster details on its dormers, this lovely home in one of the North Shores poshest suburbs was built in 1889 for a founding member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. And today, its been lovingly restored for modern family life.

This home is truly remarkable, says Dave Chung, the Compass listing agent for 337 Melrose that went on the market earlier this year. This is a historical house where you really dont know whats old or whats new. Even at 8,000-square-feet, this is an incredibly comfortable and livable space. Its very warm and homey you know that a family actually lives here. Its hard to find an older home in this pristine condition where the next family could just move in and not have to do anything to feel at home. This particular house is rumored to have been one of the first 10 homes built in Kenilworth and the current owners are only the sixth family to have lived here in 130 years.

Once three separate rooms, the kitchen is now a wide-open space outfitted with a tin ceiling, custom cabinetry, marble countertops, and a generous eat-in area. A relaxed family room is immediately adjacent.

This is one of the familys favorite parts of the house, says Chung. When its warm outside, the doors from the family room open to the veranda and provide additional space for entertaining or just another way to enjoy this home with views of their beautiful landscape.

The living and dining rooms are flooded with natural light and maintained their coved ceilings even after the first floor was significantly renovated.

The coved ceilings were intentionally designed for the first homeowners to create perfect acoustics for the musicians they hosted, Chung says. The current homeowners were interested in preserving some of the homes history by maintaining elements like this. Another example is when it came time to replace the hardware on the doors, they discovered that some of the hinges were original to the home. With some research and a talented craftsman, they were able to replicate them and have them installed throughout.

The second-floor master suite has a lovely five-piece marble bath and walk-in closet with custom cabinetry. Three additional large bedrooms each with their own en-suite bath complete the second floor. The third floor has two additional bedrooms, a fantastic full bath, laundry room, and a gym or seventh bedroom.

The lower level bar is beyond compare with a custom leather banquette, integrated refrigeration, and designer touches throughout.

As if the rest of the home isnt enough to have you swoon, the lower level will win you over for sure. With a large playroom with endless built-ins, a bar that would make Ralph Lauren or the Deer Path Inn envious, and an incredible media roomthis is truly where the family lives.

Las Vegas-based Boxabl wants to mass-produce low-cost housing.

The company released its first product, a 375-square-foot prefab studio apartment early this year, called the Casita. Some videos showing the unit expanding from a shipping container went viral on Twitter, and Boxabl reports huge interest in its products ever since.

Boxabl was started in 2017 by Paolo Tiramani, Galiano Tiramani, and Kyle Denman. After several years of prototyping and testing materials, the Boxabl Casita was introduced in early 2020, with plans to ship by the end of the year. Since then, the company says it has experienced a huge surge in interest. Boxabl told Business Insider that it now receives hundreds of emails a day, with 8,000 requests to buy the Casita. So far, 1,300 people have put down deposits to join the waitlist for the $50,000 house.

The company is looking for massive growth. Though the startup is small now, the goal is to create a large manufacturing facility akin to an automotive factory, constantly churning out standardized pieces that can be combined to create customizable buildings. A spokesperson told Business Insider that Boxabl is looking to raise $10 million to fund this growth, with a private offering coming up. They have already raised over $100 million from investors.

The company also has plans to release more sizes, which will likely be 20 feet by 30 feet, 20 feet by 40 feet, and 20 feet by 60 feet.
