Apples latest souped-up iPads, along with accessories like the Magic Keyboard and software enhancements in iPadOS, have turned the companys tablets into bona-fide desktop and laptop replacements.
But if you really want to use your iPad as your primary computing device, there are a few things you should keep in mind. Here are five tips for replacing your PC or Mac with one of Apples tablets, whether for work, school, or just day-to-day usage.
Lack of mouse support was long the main hurdle preventing the iPad from operating as a PC replacement. But Apples latest iPadOS update gives the iPad external mouse and trackpad support, giving you a desktop- or laptop-like cursor for the first time.
But before you get a mouse to go clicking away, you should probably get a keyboard, too. You can pair your own Bluetooth keyboard to your iPad and get your typing done that way, but you can also get yourself a keyboard cover that doubles as a case, and makes your iPad look more laptop-like than usual. Apple makes its own keyboard covers with different features depending on the iPad youre using: iPad Pro users can grab the trackpad-free Smart Keyboard Folio, or the trackpad-equipped Magic Keyboard Cover. iPads lacking the Pro moniker have an Apple-provided option when it comes to keyboards: the Smart Keyboard uses the tablets embedded Smart Connector, and doubles as a cover when not in use, but doesnt feature any flexibility in terms of viewing angles.
You can also look to third-party keyboards for added functionality. Keyboards like Logitechs backlit Combo Touch turn your iPad into the closest thing to an iPad Pro without the added cost. It adds a detachable keyboard and trackpad cover to the iPad, along with an adjustable kickstand akin to the Microsoft Surface arguably more useful than Apples own Magic Keyboard and its inflexible posture. Theres also the series of wireless keyboards from Brydge, which affix to your iPad to turn it into a facsimile of a laptop. The new Brydge Pro+ works with the iPad Pro and includes an integrated trackpad, while the Brydge Pro fits on the lower-end iPad, but lacks a trackpad.
Some things are just easier to do on a PCbut that doesnt mean theyre impossible to do on an iPad.
Need to send specific files or open certain links in particular apps and web browsers? Check out Opener, an app that lets you take advantage of the iOS share sheet (indicated by the box with an arrow sticking out of it). Use an app like 1Password to access your protected online accounts on any device, on iOS, Mac, or PC. TextExpander can save you time typing repeated email responses, names, addresses, or forms by creating shortcuts corresponding to their longer stored sentences and paragraphs.
Need a more powerful to-do list? Apples integrated Reminders app is free and suitable for day-to-day tasks, but apps like Todoist or Omnifocus offer multiple ways to restructure your priorities and projects you want to accomplish whether on the job or around the house. What about a word processor? Google Docs, the minimalist iA Writer, and the organization-friendly Scrivener all offer different takes when it comes to writing, drafting, and organizing text. For a more powerful text editor, check out Drafts, which can send the text you write to other apps, boosting your productivity and saving you time in the process.
Understanding how to manage your app windows is perhaps the most frustrating part of using an iPad as a replacement for your PC.
Whereas window management is a snap on a PC, on an iPad, youll be dragging apps, holding them in place, and swiping them to certain parts of the screen to keep your multitasking habits alive. The iPads Split View feature puts two apps side-by-side, while its Slide Over feature will overlay an iPhone-shaped version of your app on a section of either your home screen or atop the app youre already using. You can operate up to three apps at a time, and drag and drop items like photos and email attachments between them.
To start using the iPads multitasking feature, open an app or place it in your iPad dock. From there, you can select another app in the dock, long press it, and drag it up either on top of the current app, or next to it, enabling its Split View mode. You can adjust the real estate each app takes up by sliding the central divider left or right. By repeating the process with a third app, you can layer it on top of either of the two apps, letting you have a word processor on one side, a calendar on the other, and your messaging app of choice on top of that.
While slick, its still not perfect. Using the keyboard in Split View gets a bit frustrating if you keep switching between apps, and not every app supports every multitasking mode.
If youre using your iPad as your primary machine these days, youre probably suffering from some pretty poor postureyoure more hunched over with your neck tilted downward, perhaps. Working that way for a few days might be well and good, but for longer periods of time, youre just asking for a strained neck, uncomfortable back, and generally unpleasant feeling.
But an iPad on a stand? Thats a game-changer. Not only will a stand help correct your bad posture, but with the right modeleither one attached to an articulated arm or with a swiveling headyou can use your iPad in either portrait or landscape mode, and pair it with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse (or trackpad) to gain even more control.
If you need to connect lots of devices to your iPad, youve probably already encountered a problem: it only has one port. The solution? A USB-C hub, which allows you not only to connect devices like flash drives or digital cameras to your iPad, it also supercharges your tablet when paired with the right external accessories.
Streaming video for a conference call? Connecting your iPad to a hub with an Ethernet port gives you a wired connection for lag-free calls. Need to offload some photos from your digital camera? A hub with an SD card slot, combined with Apples Files app, makes short work of getting your pictures off the card and into your app of choice (or the cloud). You can even connect your favorite wired keyboard rather than spend money on a wireless model.
A hub can also give you some much-needed screen space by connecting your iPad to a second display. Depending on the app youre using, your iPad will either mirror your screen or offer you a secondary monitor to display images, keynote presentations and more unencumbered by your user interface or editing tools. Apps like Photos, Keynote, and Procreate can use a second display to show off larger versions of whatever youre viewing on your iPad, tooits great for displaying presentations or photo slideshows.
Still, iPad second screens arent perfect. When viewing a photo in an app like Photos, the image itself will be showcased in an awkward 4:3 aspect ratio, with the image taking up the entirety of the monitor only after you do a little zooming in with your fingers.
Even better is the ability to send video to your second, larger display when connected. The iPad retains its 4:3 aspect ratio when plugged into an external display, even if its a widescreen monitor. But when watching video from, for example, your favorite streaming app, the iPad will take advantage of the entire monitor, providing you with a proper 16:9 aspect ratio and viewing experience.

Googles enterprise communication tools have seen a flurry of changes in recent weeks. The latest is a Progressive Web App for Google Chat that replaces the existing Electron client.
First detailed last April, the PWA lets you use Google Chat in its own separate window that does away with your browsers address bar and hides other unnecessary controls. It can be launched from a desktop/dock app icon, with the messaging experience otherwise unchanged.
For admins, Google touts the secure and always up-to-date nature, as well as simplified deployment. Theres also better loading performance. Version 73 of Chrome (from March 2019) or higher is required with Mac, Windows, Linux, and Chrome OS supported.
Google recommends that admins and users uninstall the existing Electron-based app. There are three ways to install the PWA once on chat.google.com:
Available to all G Suite customers, the Google Chat PWA is rolling out now. As of this evening, we are not seeing the automatic prompt to install yet. It joins other apps like Google Drive, YouTube Music, and YouTube TV.

Fridays chaos gave way to order on Saturday as clean-up efforts began.
Andrew Song and his family spent Saturday morning cleaning up Kwan's Deli and Korean Kitchen, which was broken into and looted Friday night, its front windows shattered.
Song, whose father immigrated to the U.S. from Korea and started the business next to Centennial Park in 2002, said the destruction was a huge shock, though he is relieved the damage wasnt worse.
Well get this cleaned up and then well see how tomorrow works, he said.

Outside the Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame, Fred Turner of Grove Park helped sweep up glass. He wore a sign around his neck stating that two wrongs dont make it right.
Tearing up our city doesnt make sense, said Turner, who added that he agrees with the message behind the original protest.
The sign outside the CNN Center, defaced with graffiti on Friday, had been cleaned by Saturday morning.
Kimberly Beaudin, CEO of the heavily damaged College Football Hall of Fame, was also outside sweeping up broken glass Saturday morning and cleaning up the ransacked gift shop. She said there is a level of disbelief following the destruction and no estimate yet on the cost of the damage.
Rioters burned police cars and smashed their way into stores in downtown Atlanta and Buckhead despite pleas by Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and civil rights activists who urged demonstrators to stay home and seek meaningful ways to honor the death of George Floyd.

Stunned city officials, long used to peaceful protests in the cradle of the civil rights movement, were left to reassess their strategy after masses of demonstrators defaced the CNN Center, torched a visitors center in Centennial Olympic Park and stormed through Phipps Plaza, an upscale mall in Buckhead.
This is not a protest, Bottoms said during an emotional news conference late Friday. This is not in the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. This is chaos. A protest has purpose. When Dr. King was assassinated, we didnt do this to our city. You are disgracing our city. You are disgracing the life of George Floydand every other person who has been killed in this country.
Nirav Bodiwala's liquor store on Baker Street was a disheveled mess Saturday morning.
"These guys were thugs," he said, as workers swept up the broken glass from his storefront. When he got to the store Saturday he found the interior strewn with blood and debris, his best liquor bottles gone, and his cash register raided. They even hauled off his safe, which had been bolted down.
Worse, Bodiwala said, They tossed lighted cardboard into his store, apparently attempting to set it ablaze.
Peachtree Liquor Store sits at the base of a 23-story building, the floors above filled with hundreds of apartments.
"That would have burned the whole building because of the alcohol I have in there," he said.
They left behind a small white sign. Scribed in red: "Justice for George Floyd."
City officials said police officers trying to maintain the peace were targeted with knives, eggs, firecrackers and other projectiles. Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields, who condemned the actions of Minneapolis officers involved in the call that left Floyd death, had said she would allow protesters to mass so long as they didnt violate laws.
The demonstration started off as a peaceful march from Centennial Olympic Park to the state Capitol, and participants waved signs expressing outrage over Floyd's death and chanted demands of justice and equality.
But it took a dangerous turn as the night wore on and splinter groups gathered outside the park to engage in testy clashes with law enforcement officers, who at times fired tear gas into crowds that turned barricades into weapons.

At some damaged spots, Fridays rioters were replaced with Saturdays Good Samaritans.
Samuel Harden and his wife usually celebrate Valentines Day at McCormick & Schmicks, a restaurant in CNN Center ransacked Friday night. On Saturday morning, the Hardens were there to help clean up.
We hate that the frustration tuned into damage of property," said Harden, who grew up in the city and now lives in Douglas County. "I understand the anger, but youve got to go peacefully.
Recent Georgia State University Devin Mitchell also pitched in.
He said he understands the community is grieving due to racial injustice, but the protest escalated into something it wasnt.
"As far as tearing our own community up, I dont think thats the right thing, I dont think thats what anybody from the past wouldve wanted us to do, said Mitchell, who played basketball at GSU. It was just really tough to watch everybody going crazy I had to come do my part.
The last time a major protest rocked Atlanta, when Black Lives Matters protesters massed outside the Governors Mansion in 2016, it was defused by Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed when hepromised a sit-down with demonstrators.
But the outrage over Floyd's death presents a different challenge, as demonstrations spread widely across the nation to protest police brutality.
Bottoms turned to aging civil rights activists and young hip-hop stars to plead for calm and end to the looting, staging a press conference just blocks away from where the largest group of demonstrators had gathered.
It is your duty not to burn your own house down for anger with an enemy, said a tearful Killer Mike, also known as Michael Render. It is your duty to fortify your own house so that you may be a house of refuge in times of organization.
The violence that shuddered through this city threatened restaurants, retail stores and businesses already reeling from a coronavirus pandemic. Amir McRae, who owns the ATL Cruzers downtown Segway tour business, was awoken early Saturday by an ADT alarm call.
Hed hoped his black owned signs would spare his building, but his windows were smashed in nonetheless.
Im just feeling hurt, he said. Here we are with utter destruction of property.
As he spoke, he shooed away looters picking over a Circle K that was overrun.
We worked way too hard for this, he said, as they slinked away. Do whats right. Keep it moving!
Sakeema Freeman, a 26-year-old student in a construction management masters program, was cleaning graffiti from a placard outside Centennial Olympic Park that read: Black Lives Matter.
She said she took part in the peaceful part of the protest early Friday before peeling off when it grew more raucous. She followed the events from her downtown apartment on social media and out her window, and helped to watch younger demonstrators who wanted to steer clear of the violence.
I tried to do my part, said Freeman, who saw the damage in the morning and got out a rag and soap and went to work with her father, Veree.
She wasnt mad Saturday just matter of fact.
Youve got to clean up your familys mess.
Across the street, Katie Labgold and Yvanna Pantner were busily wiping away graffiti as well. Labgold, a doctoral student in epidemiology, said it seemed like an immediate action to start the healing process and, long-term, to help to end racist actions and fight white silence.
Pantner, who is about to start a social work program, described it in a similar vein.
Our goal is to recognize that being anti-racist starts with the individual. My job is to look within myself and say, What can I do to be anti-racist today? And to listen to people of color in my community and ask what my role is in all of this. This is really a systemic issue. It has to be viewed that way.
The scene was far different Friday night.
Just as police officers seemed to contain the violence in downtown Atlanta, large crowds moved north to the affluent Buckhead area. Big-box stores were ransacked and video showed trespassers trying to empty luxury retailers at Phipps Plaza. Atlanta Fire Rescue responded to reports of blazes at the historic Tabernacle downtown andDel Frisco's Grille in Buckhead.
Firefighters were unable to respond immediately to Del Friscos because of the large protester presence. Once they were able to extinguish the flames, crews returned to trucks that had been set upon by vandals.
The beleaguered local authorities and Georgia State Patrol officers were reinforced shortly after midnight by Kemps order, whichactivated as many as 500 Georgia National Guard troops.
A contingent of 100 soldiers was immediately deployed to the Lenox Square Mall area, and authorized to make arrests.
Early Saturday morning, Atlanta police reported gunshots outside Phipps Plaza and downtown Atlanta, and widespread looting at stores across the city. Rioters smashed windows of firetrucks and ruined police cars; a WSB-TV news truck was also targeted.
As police strained to control the damage, civic leaders stepped up their pleas for calm. T.I. urged protesters to stay home this city doesnt deserve this and bright-red digital billboards lit up with a message: If you love Atlanta, PLEASE GO HOME!
We have to be better than this moment. We have to be better than burning down our own homes, said Killer Mike. Because if we lose Atlanta what else do we have?

Leeds United's promotion charge will hopefully get the go ahead to continue shortly with the club standing just nine games away from a place back in the Premier League.
Director of football Victor Orta will already be no doubt hard at work and scouting potential options for the next chapter in the clubs future.
Marcelo Bielsa is currently blessed with a settled squad and dependable players in almost every position, but there will undoubtedly be a question mark over who starts between the sticks going forward.
It was hoped that Kiko Casilla could be the one to fill that spot, but his future must now be under question after being served an eight-match ban for an FA charge of racist abuse, with a number of erratic moments before that.
While Illan Meslier has impressed so far, catching the eye in his debut against Arsenal and keeping back-to-back clean sheets in his first two league appearances, it would be a bold move to look to depend upon a relative novice at just 20 years of age.
If Casilla were to leave, adding competition - ideally with experience - would be imperative.
Here are three players that Leeds could look to sign this summer.
A controversial choice, perhaps, after his spat with Patrick Bamford and antics during Norwichs 3-1 win over Leeds last season, but hes got plenty of experience and would fit the mould.
Daniel Farkes Canaries dont play in quite the same style as Bielsas Leeds, but there is an emphasis on passing from the back. The 31-year-old Netherlands international has completed more passes than any other Premier League goalkeeper this season.
Krul is contracted at Carrow Road until 2022, while a likely relegation - Norwich currently sit bottom of the Premier League table, six points adrift of safety - could potentially make a move a goer.
The wildcard option. English audiences havent been too impressed with the Manchester City goalkeeper for his less-than-stellar shot-stopping record. But he fits the mould in terms of passing style and knows Bielsa well from his time as Chile coach.
Not only has he proved a penalty shootout hero for his country twice in back-to-back Copa America wins over Argentina, but hes enjoyed a brilliant career at club level and continues to lift silverware as Edersons back-up and cup goalkeeper at City.
At the age of 36, Bravo is by no means a long-term option, but could be a useful presence to aid Meslier's development, and is used to sitting on the bench if the plan is to keep trusting the young Frenchman. Hes also out of contract this summer and could potentially join on a free.

After impressing out on loan, Ramsdale has been given a chance this season by his parent club Bournemouth this season and looks to have provided the answer to their goalkeeping woes of recent years.
Hes enjoyed a stellar breakthrough campaign, in spite of the Cherries battle against relegation. There will certainly be lots of competition for his signature in the event they do go down, and be a statement of intent.
Ramsdale only averages a 53.9% pass completion rate, meaning he doesnt quite fit the template of what Bielsa would be looking for - thats 30% down on Casillas rate this season, for example. But at the age of 21, hes still young enough to learn new skills and develop his game.

The Panther Creek bridge on KY 81 will not reopen until the entire structure can be replaced, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. A temporary bridge could be installed in the coming months to the East side of the structure.
The bridge was damaged last week by an oversized vehicle that impacted every crossmember along the top portion of the structure. A final analysis of damage to the bridge indicates that it will not reopen to traffic.
We are working closely with the Secretarys office in Frankfort to secure the funds necessary to replace the existing structure, said Chief District Engineer Deneatra Henderson. We are considering a design-build style procurement to allow us to expedite the process. Typically, projects of this nature tend to move a little faster.
A timeline to replace the structure is unknown at this time. The timeline for a temporary bridge to be opened to traffic over Panther Creek is roughly 8-10 weeks.
Before arriving on-site to examine the damage to the bridge, I had already reached out to a contractor with a military-style temporary structure, Henderson said. We were able to receive permission from the adjoining property owners to remove trees on the East side of the bridge, in preparation for the installation of the temporary structure.
While the damage is very similar to what occurred in August of 2019, the heat-straightening technique used to repair the bridge cannot be used again, as the steel is already brittle from previous repairs.
That was demonstrated during the new impact, with the evidence of cracking along the bolt holes at some of the beams. Because of this, engineers in the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Bridge Division have determined that the bridge cannot reopen, and repairs would not be cost effective when compared to the cost of replacement.
Traffic on KY 81 is being routed along a marked detour on KY 554 and U.S. 431. Motorists should use appropriate caution along the detour, and larger vehicles should not attempt to shorten their route by making the turns with Todd Bridge Road. There are variable message boards along the route to encourage motorists to stay on the marked detour.
The impact occurred May 18 but was not discovered until May 21. The Kentucky State Police are still investigating the crash. Troopers are asking anyone who has a home or business security camera on KY 56 and KY 81 to check May 18 between the hours of 1-3 pm for footage containing the vehicle in the photos below.
Anyone who has additional pictures and/or can establish the identity of the owner/operator of the pictured vehicle, please contact KSP at 270-826-3312.
Opened to traffic in 1934, the 246-foot structure with a 109-foot main span includes a 6-panel Pratt through truss design. The Panther Creek Bridge underwent an extensive painting and maintenance project in the fall of 2018. In August of 2019, it was damaged by a truck carrying a load of metal and closed to traffic. The bridge reopened two days prior to Thanksgiving 2019. Approximately 5,200 vehicles cross the bridge each day.

Buzz is growing about Sen. Warren (D-Mass.) is in regular contact with Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, and plans to hold a big online fundraiser for him on June 15. The high-profile progressive has also increased her outreach to Bidens longtime Senate allies, sending the message that shes eager to join Team Biden, according to Senate sources.
Picking Warren could give Biden a boost in the polls. A Morning ConsultPolitico survey released Wednesday found that 26 percent of registered voters said they would be more likely to vote for Biden if he chose Warren, putting her ahead of the other eight women he is said to be considering.
Her greatest impact, according to the survey, would be among voters under the age of 45, as well as black and Hispanic voters three blocs Democrats see as key to winning the White House and picking up Senate seats.
But picking Warrenwould likelycost Democrats one of those Senate seats, at least temporarily, if Biden were to defeat President TrumpDonald John TrumpMinneapolis erupts for third night, as protests spread, Trump vows retaliation Stocks open mixed ahead of Trump briefing on China The island that can save America MORE.
Warren represents a state with a Republican governor, Charlie Baker, who has the power to pick anyone he wants to fill her seat, should it become vacant, until a special election sometime in 2021.
Massachusetts law requires a special election to be held between 145 and 160 days after a Senate seat becomes vacant, a significant problem if Biden wins the White House and the Senate is evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats.
If Baker were to appoint a Republican to replace Warren, Democrats would need a net pickup of four Senate seats instead of three and control of the White House to win back the Senate majority, where the GOP holds a 53-47 advantage.
Meanwhile, two other potential VP candidates Sens. Given how the Senate battleground map is shaping up, a 50-50 Senate tie counting both Massachusetts Senate seats in the Democratic column is becoming a distinct possibility.
How quickly a potential Baker appointee could be casting votes in the chamber would be determined by Warren.
If she were to resign on Nov. 4, the day after Election Day, that could shave off 61 days during which a temporary appointee would serve in the 117th Congress, assuming the Senate convenes on Jan. 4, the first Monday in January, as it often has.
That would still give a Republicansenator at least 84 days to serve in a new Senate session.
If one seat means the difference between three more months of GOP control, that could seriously blunt the first 100 days of a Biden administration, potentially delaying the confirmation of Cabinet nominees and the consideration of Democratic-backed legislation.
Some strategists say its a gamble worth taking.
To me its become increasingly clear that she would be the strongest pick electorally, said Mike Lux, a Democratic strategist who worked in the Clinton White House. Shes actually very strong with African American and Latino and Latina voters.
Lux said Warren also really increases the enthusiasm level, which is one of the key things the Biden folks need to figure out.
Theres this big enthusiasm gap in a lot of the polls between Biden and Trump, and I think Warren would really help change that dynamic, he added.
Warren herself appears enthusiastic about the VP possibility.
One Senate Democrat said her jockeying for the veep slot has been noticeable, while other Senate sources noted shes been reaching out more to Bidens allies on Capitol Hill.
This month she co-sponsored Sen. Christopher CoonsChristopher (Chris) Andrew CoonsVoting rights, public health officials roll out guidelines to protect voters from COVID-19 The Hill's Morning Report - Presented by Facebook - US virus deaths exceed 100,000; Pelosi pulls FISA bill Warren's VP bid faces obstacle: Her state's Republican governor MOREs (D-Del.) Biden and Warren have been speaking regularly in recent weeks, about once a week, according to sources with knowledge of the phone calls.
Warren has also spoken to former President Obama, mostly about her ideas surrounding the pandemic.
In recent months, Obama has told those around him that he was impressed with the ideas she had on the campaign. Last fall, he went to bat for her when speaking to donors who were turned off by her politics, vouching for her political chops and her fluency on policy.
"With the economy in the gutter, I think he believes she can play a big role in the recovery," said one Obama ally. "He appreciates her ideas."
One Biden ally said theformer vice president also "appreciates and respects" Warren's ideas.
"She's at the top of the list for a reason," the ally said.
Liberal strategists who want to see Warren on the ticket say the overwhelmingly Democratic state Senate and House in Massachusetts could change the states law to require Baker to pick someone from the same party as Warren.
Democrats control 34 seats in the Massachusetts state Senate while Republicans hold four, with two vacancies. In the state House, Democrats hold a 126-31 advantage, with seats vacant.
Six states require the governor to appoint a replacement of the same party as the departing senator, according to a 2017 report by the National Conference of State Legislatures.
Lux said Bakers potential appointment of a Republican successor is pretty easy to get around given that Democrats have a veto-proof majority and could easily change the law to make it more like other states where if the person who leaves is a Democrat than they have to pick a Democrat.
Debra OMalley, spokeswoman for the Massachusetts secretary of the commonwealth, said, Theres no provision for the state legislature to veto the choice by the governor.
But OMalley noted that the Massachusetts state legislature could change the law between now and next year and override a veto.
This is the law as it stands now. That law could change and in fact that law has changed multiple times in the last 20 years, she added.
Charles Chamberlain, chairman of liberal advocacy group Democracy for America, said it would be worth changing Massachusetts election law to get Warren on the ticket.
If she were to join the ticket as the vice presidential candidate, I think it would make progressives across this country very excited for this ticket, he said. It would really make a difference in motivating, energizing and engaging progressive voters.
Chamberlain said even if Baker picks a temporary Republican successor, that could pave the way for Rep. Given the potential delays and scope that removing Huawei 5G kit from existing 5G networks and sourcing replacement kit for hardware already on order the need various UK telecoms operators need to have an urgent statement on the record from the Government over exactly what is to happen with Huawei hardware in the UK.
As things stand today all the press coverage is based on a quote from a spokesperson originally quoted in The Guardian and Telegraph.
In January 2020 it was announced that use of Huawei 5G kit would be capped at 35% of the core network, but it appears now after protracted pressure from the United States of America that this is set to change to 0% of the core and its unclear what the fate of Huawei kit elsewhere will be e.g. 3G/4G/5G antenna, existing VDSL2 cabinets, Huawei FTTP ONT and Huawei headends in exchanges.
If there is a proven hack/leak of sensitive data from Huawei kit then one presumes that evidence would be produced or if of a sensitive nature statements would be made pointing this out and trusted parties allowed to verify this. For now though it looks more like a mixture of geo politics and fears of the unknown are driving policy.
In the 5G world the options if you ignore Huawei are basically Nokia and Ericsson and if the issue is really China spying how confident can anyone be that the supply chains of competitors are not compromised. If China is using its electronic exports to run spy networks it is unlikely they will be tied to a specific company and extra code or hardware to syphon off data will be in many places.
Huawei has been under scrutiny for some time and one presumes the same scrutiny will apply to hardware and software from other suppliers.
The 5G networks if they were fully standalone are at a size where removal of Huawei is difficult but reasonably possible. The problem is that improvements in the fifth generation of mobile network also includes core network upgrades that will already have other mobile traffic using them.
Removing Huawei from the 1,200 or so handover exchanges i.e. replacing Huawei head ends with Nokia is again possible and as the amount of FTTP increases there are exchanges with Nokia headends already so for some there is potential for this to be a reconfiguration and rewiring exercise and ensuring wholesalers have connectivity on the Nokia headend.
The issue around Huawei VDSL2 cabinets of which there is at least 66,000 on street corners around the UK is harder as the least downtime solution would be to stand and commision a new cabinet and then move the copper connections down. As this would need a new spot on the pavement that will be difficult in some areas and this a turn and lift off old cabinet and replace with a new one might be cheaper but could mean a days downtime. The more likely solution is to commit to no new Huawei VDSL2 cabinets, which given the small numbers being added each week is not difficult and then once the Salisbury WLR switch off and porting of an entire exchange to FTTP has worked successfuly other areas will follow and the Huawei cabinets removed. How long to remove all the Huawei cabinets is a big guess but given that the FTTP build has to be complete looking at around 2030.
Who will pay for all the work and new kit is unknown, hence the why we need official statements and budget support announced so if the nuclear option is what is desired that firms can start planning immediately.
Of course even if the UK was Huawei free as soon as anyone went to any country that had Huawei kit the worries would return.
A final reason why on the record statements are needed is that in an information vacuum conspiracy theories thrive and a banning of Huawei 5G kit is no doubt going to be latched onto by some either for their own gain be that financial or just giggles.
