There were also 105 more deaths related to the virus reported in the previous 24 hours, and 4,717 COVID-19 patients were still hospitalized as of midnight Friday, according to Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike. There were 1,250 COVID-19 patients in intensive care beds and 789 on ventilators as of midnight as well, according to IDPH.
Those numbers are either still ticking upward or in a state of plateau in various areas, Pritzker said, and they are more telling than the total test count.
As we've been talking about flattening and bending the curve, you know, as I have indicated, we're still going up by a little bit (in hospitalization numbers) ... maybe you would call that flat, Pritzker said. But whatever you would call it at the moment, we're not going down. And that's what we really need to do.
The states R-naught number, which characterizes a diseases infectiousness by tracking how many people one carrier spreads it to, is roughly 1.2 at the moment, Ezike said. Thats down from higher than three, and Pritzker has said a goal is to get the number below one.
The point is that it definitely came down, Ezike said. Again, thanks to the mitigation strategies because people work so hard to stay at home and to help limit the transmission of this virus. And so we're very proud that it came down. And, you know, we hope that it's not going to see a significant rise as people, if people change their behavior.

Deciding whether to head outdoors or to stay at home has never before felt so fraught, as many of us continue the weigh the benefits of getting some fresh air versus the risks of getting sick. For many, however, the enticements of a spring day are too powerful to resist.
Yesterday it was raining and we felt kind of sorry for ourselves, but its hard to feel sorry for yourself on a sunny day like today, said Nancy Penman, a resident of Manhattans Upper West Side.
Ms. Penman was one of many who were maintaining a safe distance between themselves and others while they walked in Riverside Park on a recent afternoon. I hope they dont close the parks, she said. We need our sun. Ive heard it boosts the immune system.
Ms. Penman may have a point. There is now limited but convincing evidence that moderate sunlight exposure is capable of modulating the immune system and improving health, said Daniel Gonzlez Maglio, a professor at the University of Buenos Aires and researcher in the growing field of photo-immunology.
A daily dose of sunlight wont fend off or cure coronavirus, though researchers continue to explore the effects that warmer weather and ultraviolet rays might have on the virus. But scientists are finding that exposure to the sun has numerous other benefits that may be especially important now including helping to elevate mood, to improve the quality of our sleep and to strengthen the bodys innate defenses against a variety of pathogens.
The impact of sunlight on human health would not have been news for our ancestors, said the British researcher Richard Hobday, author of The Healing Sun: Sunlight and Health in the 21st Century.
Hippocrates, the father of medicine, said that if you have a city that is properly oriented toward the sun you dont have so many diseases in it, Dr. Hobday noted. Throughout history and all over the world, sunlight has been worshiped for its health-giving properties and used as a medicine.
These ancient beliefs received scientific validation in the early 20th century, when sunlight was employed to kill tuberculosis bacteria and to treat the deficiency disease, rickets. Inspired by sun advocates like the pioneering nurse Florence Nightingale, hospitals and sanitariums were designed with large east-facing windows and skylights to maximize sun exposure for their patients.
During the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918-19, patients who were treated in overflow tent hospitals and regularly taken out in the sun when they were in recovery had lower death rates than those who were left indoors in dark and poorly ventilated wards, Dr. Hobday reported in a study published in the American Journal of Public Health.
Enthusiasm for sunlight as medicine waned after antibiotics began to be widely used during the 1930s, but it has recently revived, as evidence mounts for the complex role that vitamin D sometimes called the sunshine vitamin, because the skin creates it when exposed to sunlight plays in human biology.
Over half of Americans do not produce enough vitamin D, a result of spending some 90 percent of our time indoors, according to Dr. Michael Holick, a professor of medicine at Boston University. And thats a problem, he says, because too little vitamin D can weaken our bodys ability to fight off infections.
Dr. Holick recommends to many of his patients that they take supplements of vitamin D. Overweight people, he says, may need extra high doses. But consult your doctor before doing so, since high doses can cause kidney problems and other complications.
Dr. JoAnn Manson, the chief of preventive medicine at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston and a Harvard professor, says that the jury is still out on optimal levels of vitamin D, though some people might benefit from supplements to hedge their bets.
The best approach is to have a heart-healthy diet and get the nutrients from foods, Dr. Manson said, and to spend time outdoors in the fresh air and sunlight. Being physically active outdoors helps people to maintain proper weight, reduces the risk of diabetes and heart disease, benefits bone health, lowers stress and improves emotional well-being. The list of benefits from physical activity is extensive. Moreover, sun exposure enables the skin to create nitric oxide, which lowers blood pressure and improves cardiovascular health, Dr. Manson said.
But the fact that a little sunlight is good for health does not mean that a lot is better. Too much exposure suppresses the ability of the human immune system to efficiently detect and attack malignant cells, which can increase the risk of skin cancer, Dr. Maglio cautioned.
To gauge how long one can safely remain in the sun at different latitudes, seasons and times of day, Dr. Holick helped develop a free app called D Minder Pro that tracks the amount of vitamin D that your body is getting from exposure to the sun and warns you when you are staying outdoors too long.
Exposure to daylight is also critical for accurately setting our internal circadian clock, which in turn regulates sleep and waking, said Mariana Figueiro, the director of the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.
Without adequate light, we can go into a kind of permanent jet lag, Dr. Figueiro explained, where we get more easily irritated and depressed, our immune function is suppressed and our overall health may deteriorate.
Not everyone will be able to get outside now, or feel safe doing so. Those who remain indoors may have to take some extra steps to be exposed to the light that they need to remain healthy.
If possible, work facing a window, especially in the morning hours, and avoid working in your basement, Dr. Figueiro advised. If you have one table lamp in the living room, you might want to increase that number to get the amount of light you need to stimulate the circadian system. You dont need special bulbs, she says, since ordinary incandescent lighting emits the wavelengths of light that we need to help set our biological clocks.
While exposure to morning light helps us to get a good nights sleep later on, in the evening it has the opposite effect. Turn off and dim your lights two hours prior to bedtime, because that is when your body starts producing melatonin, which is telling your body that it is night and time to go to sleep, Dr. Figueiro said.
She also recommends taking a daily 15 to 45 minute walk when possible, while being careful to maintain adequate social distance between yourself and others, since outdoor light, even on a cloudy day, is far brighter and more biologically potent than indoor light.
Scientists also continue to explore whether sunlight might fight the coronavirus directly, as it does for other viruses. Paul Dabisch, an aerobiology specialist with the Department of Homeland Security, together with several colleagues, published a paper in November that found that flu viruses are rapidly inactivated when exposed to the UV radiation in sunlight.
This is the first study to show that simulated sunlight will greatly decrease the infectivity of influenza virus contained in aerosol particles, he said.
These results might partly explain why flu transmission is lower during the summer, when people spend more time outdoors in the sun. It may be due to a combination of the fact that sunlight actually degrades the virus, and also that vitamin D has been shown to be effective in fending off infections, Dr. Dabisch said. His team and others are currently conducting research to determine whether sunlight also destroys the Covid-19 virus, or mitigates its effects.
While few scientists believe that the sun will prove to be a magic bullet against the pandemic, medical research already amply demonstrates that exposure to sunlight can help to make us happier and healthier at a time when we are in need of both.

Project L is a concept unveiled at the end of 2019 but, thanks to a partnership with Superyachts Monaco, it is ready to be built for the future owner. Pricing is available on request, and the brokerage firm promises a work of art, a sculpture on the water that challenges the classic silhouette of the yachting horizon that comes with all the features one would expect from a genuinely luxurious superyacht. Are you sold yet?
Thierry Gaugain boasts a two-decade-long experience with Philippe Starck and a portfolio that includes Sailing Yacht A, Motor Yacht A and Venus. Project L is similar to those only in terms of Gaugains apparent desire to break the mold on what a superyacht should look like and, in the process, overturn expectations.
Measuring 120 meters (393 feet), Project L aims to deliver the best performance of its class. It comes with hybrid propulsion and state-of-the-art navigation tech, which, in conjunction with the shape of the hull, would deliver impressive range at minimum costs and levels of pollution (both for emissions and noise). The exterior design is inspired by a pebble or a leaf, and is smooth and apparently entirely enclosed.
That last part is just an illusion, though. The exterior of the yacht is made up of vast expanses of glazing: one-way reflective glass. This ensures maximum privacy for guests and helps the vessel change shape by reflecting the surrounding environment and the changing light. The idea of using mirrors and reflective surfaces to create invisible yachts is not new, but Project L shows just how beautifully it can be put into practice.
According to the future owners desires, Project L can be made fully open, thus creating a direct connection to the ocean. The official renderings released so far show it covered under a cloak, with the brokerage firm saying that it will benefit from ample interconnected spaces inside. In fact, another revolutionary aspect about this superyacht is the fact that all living areas will be concentrated on just one deck and will connect to one another, creating flow.
Interior spaces will be designed to allow in as much natural light as possible, and all artificial lighting will adapt to the changing light outside, to promote calmness and relaxation. Exterior lighting will also change colors to reflect the passing of time and help the vessel blend in.
Accommodation can vary depending on the needs of the owner, ranging from 12 guests and 40+ crew, to 36 guests and 50 crew. Make no mistake about it, Project L is no dinghy.
Amenities will include a high-tech media room, a gym, two pools (one with freshwater and one with saltwater, situated on the extendable beach club at the rear), an indoor and an outdoor cinema (because just one cinema is not enough), helipad, drive-in tender garage packed with toys, a live performance area, a dive center, and polar gear room. Perhaps more impressively, Project L comes with a high-tech underwater media room (nemo room) and a submarine escape pod with a futuristic design to match the mother ship.
Focused on sustainable yachting, Project L comes with hybrid diesel-electric propulsion and long-range capabilitywhile gliding through waves with minimal levels of noise and vibration. Top speed is rated at 18 knots, and maximum range at 10,000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 12 knots. High capacity waste management system is included to further support the vessels autonomy at sea.
Shes designed to be as smooth as a pebble, and silent on the water. Her original naval architecture allows Project L to glide through the water with hammer-like stability. Her low drag and seamless lines will ensure best-in-class levels of low noise and vibration, Superyachts Monaco says. Furthermore, Project L will feature a retractable ballast like a sailboat keel to adjust stiffness, roll time, feel and stability according to conditions, swell and wind direction when at anchor. In short, Project L promises to be as efficient as its beautiful and luxurious. Should it secure that inspirational owner, it will immediately go into construction.

The Waco Hippodrome brought first-run films back to Waco for the first time in six weeks this weekend, and ticket sales for a few screenings reflected a new reality: Sellouts measured in 20 tickets or fewer.
The Hippodrome resumed showing movies on its five screens and reopened its Raleigh restaurant after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott included movie theaters in an April 27 order. Abbott allowed limited reopenings for many Texas businesses and restaurants after weeks of shutdown to limit spread of the novel coronavirus.
Movie theaters were permitted to show films again, but only at 25% capacity and with social distancing measures in place.
For the Hippodrome, that means limited ability for ticket buyers to choose their seats and more frequent cleaning of seats, tables, restrooms and other places with customer traffic.
Still, a pent-up Waco interest in moviegoing kept the box office busy on its first day back.
Phones are kinda ringing off the hook, Hippodrome communications and design coordinator Molly Noah said.
Screening this weekend are Trolls World Tour, The Way Back with Ben Affleck, The Invisible Man starring Elisabeth Moss, the inspirational I Still Believe, and the Vin Diesel action film Bloodshot. Each film will have four screenings daily.
The 25% occupancy restrictions mean the Hippodromes theaters will sell out screenings at much smaller numbers about 50 seats for the main theater, 33 for the balcony theater and fewer than 20 apiece for the three newer screening rooms leading Hippodrome employees to recommend moviegoers call in advance about ticket availability.
While the movie theater was closed to the public, the Hippodromes staff spent the downtime preparing for customers return, repainting walls with an oil-based, less permeable paint; deep cleaning and sanitizing carpets and floors; and installing 22 sanitizing stations at theater entrances and exits, restrooms and the buildings elevator.
The theater became the first in Waco to return to operations as coronavirus measures started to allow limited reopening.
National theater chains AMC Theatres and Regal Cinemas, which run the AMC Classic Galaxy 16 and Regal Jewel 16 Cinema, respectively, have each made announcements targeting reopening dates in July. Premiere Cinemas, which operates Wacos Premiere Cinema 6, did not reply to questions about its reopening.
To comply with state reopening guidelines, the Hippodrome will determine seating spacing. Small groups may sit together with two empty seats between each viewer or group and alternate rows empty. Online customers will not be able to choose their seats, but box office personnel will determine seating to ensure proper spacing.
Those standing in box office lines must leave 6 feet between them, and theater personnel in the lobby will watch to make sure spacing is adequate, Noah said. Theaters will be cleaned and sanitized between each screening, and the Hippodromes bathrooms will be sanitized every two hours.
Social spacing also will be the rule at the Raleigh, where tables have been removed to allow more room between patrons, shrinking occupancy to 13 diners. The Hippodromes Hightop, however, will remain closed.
The Raleigh also will offer to-go orders and curbside delivery for the first time. Moviegoers can still order food and drink in the theaters and can order from the Raleigh to take into the theaters, Noah said.
The Hippodromes gradual reopening this week is the first local in-person moviegoing opportunity for many in Waco. Home quarantines and sheltering in place have led millions of Americans to replace regular visits to movie theaters with watching streaming video at home.
Video on Demand offerings, where viewers pay a fee to watch a film release online or over their television, also have seen a boost, with Trolls World Tour bringing in a surprising $100 million in Video on Demand rentals when it could not be shown in theaters.
Trolls World Tour now is one of several Video on Demand releases making their Hippodrome debuts this week. Noah said the Pixar animated film Onward had tied up several Hippodrome screens in the weeks before the shutdown, shouldering out releases including I Still Believe and The Way Back.
Now those films can come back.
As with so much during the coronavirus pandemic, no one knows for sure what is next. With Hollywood studios busy postponing their summer blockbusters into the fall and beyond, the next major film release still on the books is the July 16 premiere of Christopher Nolans Tenet.
Major theater chains have not announced any timetable for reopening, though industry speculation suggests chains may show a mix of classics and previously released films in the weeks before first-run movies return.
The film distributors that provide the Hippodromes movies may offer something similar, Noah said.
The situation for live concerts is even more uncertain. Most of the Hippodromes live concerts this spring have moved to dates in the fall and winter, but it remains unknown what concerts with audiences would look like with social distancing in effect. Noah said the theater plans to try more live streaming of performers on the Hippodrome stage in the weeks ahead .
The Hippodromes Austin Avenue neighbor Cultivate 7twelve will reopen Thursday with hours of noon to 7 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and a new exhibit by artist Katy Ward. The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum will reopen to the public Monday, and the Dr Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute is planning to reopen Thursday.
