How to Clean and Disinfect All Your Gadgets – How-To Geek

    - March 31, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Whether you want to protect against COVID-19 or just give all your gadgets a deep-clean while youre stuck at home, nows the ideal time! Heres how you can safely clean your tech gadgets, without damaging anything.

Prior to the coronavirus, companies like Apple advised consumers not to use anything harsher than a damp cloth and some elbow grease to clean their gadgets. Unfortunately, that wont kill bacteria or viruses, including the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19.

In light of the recent outbreak, Apple has changed its tunewhen it comes to disinfecting your iPhone:

Using a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, you may gently wipe the exterior surfaces of your iPhone. Dont use bleach. Avoid getting moisture in any openings, and dont submerge your iPhone in any cleaning agents.

Many of the instructions for cleaning gadgets prior to this announcement still stand, as well, though. Damp cloths, soap, and elbow grease are still great if you need to remove stuck-on grime or dirt. To disinfect, though, you have to use a product that contains enough alcohol to kill potentially harmful microbes.

When it comes to hand sanitizer, the CDC advised:

Laboratory data demonstrate that 60 percent ethanol and 70 percent isopropanol, the active ingredients in CDC-recommended alcohol-based hand sanitizers, inactivates viruses that are genetically related to, and with similar physical properties as, the 2019-nCoV.

Regardless of manufacturer instructions, if you want to effectively disinfect, you need a cleaning spray of at least 60 percent ethanol (like Dettol) or rubbing alcohol with a 70 percent concentration or more.

However, theres a small risk this might damage your hardware; youll have to decide whether its worth it.

RELATED: How to Safely Clean Your iPhone With Disinfecting Wipes

You can clean your smartphone with disinfecting wipesor use rubbing alcohol to disinfect the screen and chassis. The biggest danger is that you will accelerate the wear on the oleophobic (oil repelling) coating on the display.

This coating wears away over time, anywayif youve had your device for a while, much of it is probably already gone. Fortunately, it can be reapplied with surprisingly good results, if you want to restore that shiny new phone look.

If you keep your phone in a case, you can remove it and wash the case thoroughly in hot soapy water. While doing so, you can also use an alcohol-based disinfectant on the rest of your phone. You should never submerge your phone in water or any other liquid, despite its waterproof rating.

To protect your phone or tablet (particularly the screen), you should avoid harsh cleaners, like bleach, window cleaners, creme cleansers, or any other detergent-based agents. These will definitely destroy the oleophobic coating, and might even leave your screen streaky or foggy.

The same advice applies to tablets, as well, as theyre essentially just large smartphones.

RELATED: How to Disinfect Your Smartphone

You can clean a laptopinside and outif you have the right tools. You can use compressed air to blow out the dust. Isopropyl alcohol or ethanol will disinfect the keyboard and other high-touch surfaces. You might want to be a little more careful with the screen, particularly if its plastic, as alcohol and other chemicals might destroy the finish.

A variety of cleaning products (including purpose-built brushes)will make this job easier. If youre particularly worried about heat dissipation, you can try to remove dust inside the chassiseither by opening it up or blasting it out. If youre cleaning a MacBook, make sure youre informedabout Apples unique cooling system.

RELATED: How to Properly Clean Your Gross Laptop

Since the majority of modern touchscreens are glass, you should be able to use an alcohol-based cleaner on a hybrid or convertible laptop.

Keyboards are fairly resilient, so most of us dont replace them often. This also means theyre usually covered in germs, caked with grime, and filled with fluff and hair. You can clean most keyboards piece-by-piece.

To get started, remove the keys and clean them with a cloth or brush. Use compressed air to blast any dust or crumbs out of the chassis.

You can buy purpose-built brushes and hand vacuums, but these are unnecessary if you remove the keycaps for a deep clean.

Isopropyl alcohol and ethanol will help kill potentially infectious microbes. Some people go nuclear and put their (wired) keyboards in the dishwasher. Provided you dry it out thoroughly before you plug it back in, thisshould work. However, you might damage the finish or keys, so we dont recommend it for everyone.

Warning:Never put a wireless keyboard that features an integrated battery in the dishwasher!

Cleaning your keyboard isnt only good for hygiene, it might even improve your typing experience. Since grime builds up on the switches, removing anything that makes your keys feel mushy should make your keyboard feel new again.

RELATED: How to Thoroughly Clean Your Keyboard (Without Breaking Anything)

You can follow many of the same cleaning procedures you would use for a keyboardto sanitize your computer mouse, too. Because your mouse is frequently in contact with your hand, alcohol-based cleaners are great for killing bacteria and other invisible nasties.

For those hard-to-reach places, dip a Q-tip in some alcohol and get to work. A wooden toothpick might also help you scrape any grime out of nooks and crannies. The key is to lightly clean your mouse often to prevent dirt from building up and discoloring the plastic.

In-ear headphones, like Apple AirPods, can get gross, fast. Fortunately, there are many great tricks for cleaning them, including a damp cloth, Blu Tack, and cotton balls. As always, isopropyl alcohol is the ideal solution if you want to fully disinfect.

Headphones are different, as they dont sit inside your ears. How you clean them ultimately depends on the material the ear cups are made of. Make sure you consult the manufacturers specific instructions to avoid damaging your headphones.

RELATED: The Ultimate Guide to Cleaning Your Icky AirPods

In many cases, a quick wipe around the ear cups with a damp cloth should be enough to spruce things up. If you want to disinfect them, use isopropyl alcohol on the solid surfaces, buttons, and plug (if theyre wired).

If youve never cleaned your game controllers, youre in for a shock. They can get really filthy, and dirt and grime can hide in all sorts of places. You can usealcohol and Q-tips to deep-clean your game controllers.Use a toothpick to pry dirt out of those hard-to-reach places.

If youve spilled soda on any of your controllers, theyre probably sticky. You might be able touse a plastic straw and some rubbing alcohol to fix spongey buttons without opening the shell. Just saturate the buttons with alcohol, and then agitate with the straw.

RELATED: How to Safely Clean Your Nasty Game Controllers

Your computer case also needs a regular cleaning, but for different reasons than your smartphone or game controllers. PCs are dust magnets, and dust hinders heat dissipation. Since heat kills computer components, its a good idea to remove as much dust from your PC case as possible on a regular basis.

This is no small undertaking, and you have to take care not to damage any components in the process. Also, make sure youre grounded to avoid static discharge.

Warning:Never under any circumstances should you use a vacuum to clean a computer case.

For best results, clean individual components (like the graphics card) outside the case. Take this opportunity to perform any other necessary maintenance, like replacing the thermal paste,or installing additional fans, RAM, or storage.

After the case is clean, you might want to think about where its located. If its on the floor, it might be sucking up more dust than it would on a shelf or desk.

RELATED: How To Thoroughly Clean Your Dirty Desktop Computer

Most monitors and TV screens arent designed to be touched. This is why theyre rarely made of glass, which means theyre far less resilient than a smartphone or tablet.

To avoid permanently damaging your monitor, you should clean it only with a damp cloth. Avoid harsh cleaning sprays, like Windex, or anything that contains detergent. These chemicals can (and will) damage the surface of the screen, leave streaks, or even make the display foggy and difficult to see. Plus, once you damage the surface, theres no going back.

Some monitors and televisions have cooling fans inside. Depending on its technology, dusting the back, sides, or top of your monitor can really help with heat dissipation. Since heat is the enemy of all things electronic, removing dust buildup should help extend the life of the display.

RELATED: The How-To Geek Guide to Cleaning Your LCD Monitor Screen

Once upon a time, most computers and games consoles were made of off-white plastic. Over the years, these machines have discolored terribly due to the bromine in ABS plastic. Fortunately, you can use a solution called Retr0bright to restore retro consoles and home computers to a like-new appearance.

It uses around 10 percent hydrogen peroxide to bleach the plastic, and you do have to disassemble the machine. Youll also need safety equipment, like gloves and goggles, and a well-ventilated space in which to work.

RELATED: How to Clean Old, Yellowed Plastic on Retro Computers and Game Systems

Youll spend less time cleaning your gadgets if you dont wait until theyre caked in grime to do it. Its also a lot more hygienic to clean them regularly. This is especially true for gadgets like smartphones, tablets, and laptops, as theyre regularly exposed to your hands.

If you were concerned enough to read this far, you also might want to stop answering phone calls the old-fashioned way.

Spanish Tourists expelled from Indian Airport at gunpoint and covered in disinfectant for fear of contagion – Euro Weekly News

    - March 31, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Spanish National tells his own story in India where he was forced to hide in a hotel in the face of assaults on foreigners.

THE Spanish national was a 38-year-old chef from Barcelona who went to Indian to check first-hand the progress of NGO Unstoppable, a fund he set up to help poor children who could not afford to go to school.

Manuel de Luca, a 38-year-old chef from Barcelona, arrived in India on January 17 to check the operation of the NGO Unstoppable, and along with 60 other foreign tourists found India initially warm and welcome. However with the news of the Coronavirus sweeping the country things soon changed to be sour.

The school was in Bodh Gaya, in the northeast of the country situated in a paradisiacal archipelago in the middle of the Indian Ocean, already close to Thailand, the Andaman and Nicobar islands.

A kind of Canary Islands, but with a large extension of a nature reserve in which tribes still live shooting with arrows at outsiders, completely isolated from the rest of the world, he summarised by phone.

Like many tourists, and in view of the information that came to him from Spain, De Luca decided to stay in Neil, one of the smallest islands in the archipelago, where not a single case of Covid-19 had been registered.

However, on the night of the 18th, the owner of the inn where he was staying made him leave his room with other tourists and were met at reception by a group of armed policemen, with very bad manners, then summoned to leave the island in a boat thatwas leaving that same morning.

No papers, no documents, nothing: all to taxis and all to the ship, he recalls. They had been taking tourists out of hotels on all the islands and they gathered us on that boat that took us to the main island, Port Blair, and from there directly to the airport, always escorted by the police. They pushed us armed with submachine guns and sticks andtold us move !, move !, like stinking cattle, says De Luca, who recorded the moment in a video.

At Port Blair airport they were forced to buy a plane ticket to Calcutta or Chennai, which was leaving an hour later. While we were waiting in line we had to put up with airport cleaning staff spraying like window cleaners, he recalls.

Finally, and after speaking with the Consulate General of Spain, they decided to go to Chennai, because there were fewer cases of Covid-19 than in Calcutta.

The consulate advised Calcutta because there were more people and perhaps more flights to leave, but almost the entire group opted for Chennai, explains De Luca. Since this article there has been no more contact with Manuel de Luca, we will continue to scour the news feeds for more information, so please check back daily for updates on this story.

Big-hearted cleaning firm hit the streets in bid to sanitise Ayr town centre during lockdown – Daily Record

    - March 31, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

A big-hearted cleaning firm are sanitising the streets of Ayr for free.

Flamingo Exterior Cleaning have been voluntarily blasting high-risk areas around the town centre to kill off the coronavirus.

The team have been tackling spaces used by the public including Ayr Hospital, the High Street and care homes.

Robin Barclay, who runs the business with Malcolm Bennett, says the decision to hit the streets was an easy one.

Robin told Ayrshire Live: It has always been important for us to be as involved in the community as possible, supporting events and local initiatives.

As the current crisis unfolded we felt it was a natural step, for a company that offers professional sanitisation already, to help where possible by sanitising the most vulnerable areas and areas of high human interaction such as handrails, crosswalks, doors, handles, bins etc.

We touch these things much more often than we probably imagine.

Flamingo Exterior Cleaning are based at Mosshill Industrial Estate in Ayr.

The bulk of their work usually involves window cleaning, pressure washing, roof cleaning and graffiti removal.

But since the coronavirus outbreak, the company has seen a spike in the amount of residents who would like their wheelie bins given a deep clean.

And after dark the specialist team have been hitting the town in a bid to save lives.

Robin said: We have dedicated time for three vans to provide free cleaning and have sanitised exterior areas throughout Ayrshire.

So far this has included Ayr Hospital, the High Street, Sandgate, Boat Vennel and many others.

Most of this work is carried out between 7pm and midnight as it is quieter and safer to carry out the work.

Robin says their work has been well received by the public.

And the 30-year-old insists they are doing it all for the good of the community.

Robin added: The sanitisation of these areas is strictly non profit it is about humanity and our duty to care for our community.

We have had an amazing response from members of the public, professional bodies and other businesses.

We have to thank other local businesses and the wider community for the tremendous work.

We feel extremely proud of the community spirit and everyone's dedication to fighting the virus.

Cleaners must be considered as ‘critical workers’ says BCC – ThisWeekinFM

    - March 31, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Government published a list of key workers on Friday 20 March 2020 whose children will continue to be cared for at school amid thecoronaviruspandemic but the British Cleaning Council raisesconcernsthat cleaners are not included.

The Government has requested that all schools provide optional care for a limited number of children, which includes critical and key workers, stating on Gov.UK:

If your work is critical to the COVID-19 response, or you work in one of the critical sectors listed below, and you cannot keep your child safe at home then your children will be prioritised for education provision:

If workers think they fall within the critical categories above, they should confirm with their employer that, based on their business continuity arrangements, their specific role is necessary for the continuation of this essential public service.

    Gov.UK website

There is further information on whichjobs are included detailed under each category, but cleaners are notably absent in the initial version. This means that parents working in the cleaning sectorare not eligible to apply for childcare provision from schools which jeopardises their ability to work under the social distancing protocol.

The British Cleaning Council (BCC) has responded to this omission with the following appeal:

AS we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic together as an industry, it is my duty to keep you informed about how the British Cleaning Council (BCC) is campaigning to ensure that people within our industry are viewed as essential critical or key workers who are needed more than ever to ensure we not only maintain but elevate hygiene standards in the UK in order to come out of this crisis quicker.

The BCC and its members have the staff, products, equipment and machinery to reduce the risk to human health by providing & maintaining clean, sanitised and safe premises and environments. Our regular day to day cleaning staff and our specialist and periodical industrial and window cleaning staff all have a major part in improving the environmental hygiene of the UK.

Even in lockdown, premises and particularly education, retail, healthcare establishments and care homes will require more frequent sanitisation regimes at what may well be a premium time to do so. Our cleaning staff throughout the UK have the expertise, training and knowledge to carry out sanitisation, hygiene, clinical or decontamination cleans so it is essential that the workforce are kept available by being identified ascritical or key workersby the Prime Minister and the British Government. Additionally, our cleaning product suppliers need to remain at work to provide the consumables and products to clean with, from wipes and paper products, to disinfectants, sanitisers and cleaning products in general. And our machinery and equipment providers need to produce and supply specialist cleaning equipment that our staff can use.

The cleaning industry represents nearly 4% of the UK workforce and if we do not identify our people ascritical or key workersthen hygiene in the UK will drop with the effect that the virus may flourish.

Support the BCC and all its members and keep our people at work maintaining the hygiene of the country and providing vital sanitisation services.

On behalf of the BCC, may I thank you for your support in these difficult times as with your support our staff can carry on with their invaluable work in order that together we can defeat this awful disease.

    Paul K Thrupp

How to multitask on the iPad: Split View, Slide Over, and more – Macworld

    - March 31, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Apple has done a lot over the last couple of years to make the iPad more attractive as a laptop replacement, and many of those improvements center on multitasking. Thats great, but the problem is figuring outhow to use all these multitasking tricks.

Were here to help. Below, well show you all the multitasking features that work with most current iPads as of iPadOS 13.4, ranging from relatively familiar concepts like Split View and Slide Over to trickier features like Picture in Picture. Once you learn them all, Apples tablet can feel like a vastly different device.

Keep in mind that not every app supports all these features (although plenty do). In other words, if youre having trouble, say, getting an app to work in Split View, that may simply be because the app doesnt support it.

Split View multitaskingor split-screen, as youll often hear it calledis probably the most common means of multitasking on the iPad, as it allows you to view two apps side-by-side. It doesnt work with every app, and you can only use it with apps you have in the Dock: either in the permanent library on the left side or in the recently opened section on the right. Fortunately, you can add many apps to the Dock now by dragging down their icons from the home screen and the following pages of apps.

In some cases, you can even open two windows from the same app with Split View. Unfortunately, you generally wont know if this works without experimenting. Heres how Split View works.

First, open any app. This app doesnt have to be on the Dock to begin with, although if its already open, its going to end up appearing on the right side of the Dock anyway.

Make your iPads Dock appear by slowly swiping up from the bottom of the screen.

Once the Dock appears, press down on the apps icon and hold your finger there for a fraction of a second. Then drag the little preview window that appears over to either the far right or left side of the screen. If youve done this properly, the existing app will scootch over to make room for the new one.

Drop the new app in place. You should then see the two apps side by side.

In this screenshotwhich corresponds with Step 3Im about to open Ulysses in Split View to the right of Pages. I know it will work because of the blurred interface and the way that Pages has moved over to the left.

To adjust the sizes of the windows in Split View, press your finger on the vertical thin gray line between the windows and move it to the right or left as desired.

To replace one of the apps in Split View with another app, simply repeat the steps above, but remember to drag the new app into the middle of the window for the app you want to replace.

In the middle of the Split View interface, youll see a divider that lets you adjust the sizes of the app windows. Put your finger on the thin gray line in the middle of the divider and push it toward the app you want to closeand keep pushing it off the screen until the app vanishes.

In this screenshot, I want to close Safari in Split View, so Im about to pull the divider all the way to the right.

Slide Over lets you open some apps in a narrow sliver of a window that floats on the left or right side of your screen. Its a little tricky to use, and it frequently ends up covering up key parts of whatever youre watching or reading in the app behind it. Still, its a nice option to have, especially for apps like Music that you might just want to glance at quickly. Heres how to use it.

First, make sure you already have at least one app open. For the screenshots below, Ive used Pages.

Make the iPad dock appear by slowly swiping up from the bottom of the screen. Dont do this too quickly, or you might accidentally go to the Home screen.

Find the app you want to use with Slide Over on your dock. Press and hold the apps icon for a fraction of a second, and then gently pull it up to generalmiddle of your iPads display. Dont go too far to the right or left, or youll activate Split View. (Also, dont press it for too long, or youll make the apps Extra Actions menu pop up.)

In this shot, which corresponds to Step 3, Im opening the Music app in Slide Over while looking at Apples site in Safari. I want the Slide Over window to appear on the right, so Ive pulled it over there without going too far.

The app should immediately appear in a Slide Over window, either to the left or right of the screen, depending on which direction you trended toward as you pulled it from the dock.

To move a Slide Over window to a different side of the screen, place your finger on the thin gray horizontal line at the top of a Slide Over window and pull the window to the left or right.

To make a Slide Over window disappear, hold your finger on the thin gray line and swipe it toward the nearest edge of the screen. You can make the same Slide Over window reappear by swiping away from the edge toward the middle of the screen roughly in the same spot where the thin gray line was before you removed it.

You can also convert a Slide Over window into a Split View window by pressing down on the thin gray line and then dragging the window to either lower corner of the screen. To make a Split View window go back to being a Slide Over panel, press the thin gray line and then drag the app window to the middle of the app thats on the other side of the screen.

You can also use Slide Over to multitask with three apps at once by opening two apps in Split View and then opening the third app with Slide Over. This is especially useful for apps like Music, which dont have to be on the screen the whole time for reference.

To do this, first open two apps at once with Split View. Then drag the new app directly over the thin gray line in the middle of the divider for the two apps. Release your finger, and the third app will appear in a Slide Over window.

Youll know the third app is going to make a Slide Over window if the preview before you release your finger looks like this. If its wider, its just going to replace one of the Split View windows.

Features like Split View and Slide Over arent just useful for comparing notes and the like: You can also use them to share information between two apps. This works with text, images files, and all kinds of other options, and in many cases it saves a little bit of time compared to copying and pasting. For the purposes of this how-to, Ill use text as an example.

Open two apps side by side in Split View or Slide Over. For this how-to, Ive used two word processing apps: Pages and Google Docs.

Select a snippet of text from one app.

Hold your finger on that selection and then drag it over to the app on the other side.

Release your finger. The text should then appear in the other app.

This screenshot is essentially Step 3 in action.

The App Switcher allows you to easily switch between all other open apps, roughly like Expos on the Mac. To use it, swipe up from the bottom of the screen, butwhile still holding your finger downstop somewhere around the middle of the screen. Then lift your finger. You should then see previews of all the apps you have open, and you can sift through them by swiping to the left or right. Press the preview of the app you want, and the app should open.

If youre on an iPad that still has a Home button, you can also just press the Home button twice to make the App Switcher appear. Also, its tricky, but you can also make the App Switcher appear by putting four or five fingertips on the iPads screen and beginning to pinch them together. Release them when the App Switcher appears. Dont pinch all the way, though, as youll just make the Home screen appear.

Note that the App Switcher will also show you which apps are currently paired with other apps through Split View. This allows the App Switcher to be a handy way of working with other apps without losing your Split View pairing.

In this preview, you can see that Ulysses and Safari are paired in Split View.

You can also just swipe through every open app while each app is in full-screen mode by placing four fingertips on the screen and then swiping left or right. As we saw above, you can also change to the App Switcher proper by pinching those four fingers together.

Picture-in-Picture mode lets you keep watching a video or a FaceTime call in a small window even when youre using another multitasking feature like Split View. Unfortunately, it doesnt work with every app, and that includes popular ones like YouTube. Its relatively simple to use, but the features existence isnt terribly obvious. Heres how to use it.

When watching a video or FaceTime call, you should see an icon that looks like two rectangles of different sizes. Press this icon.

The video should immediately shrink down to a corner of the screen.

You can move the Picture-in-Picture display to another part of the screen simply by dragging it aroundand you can also swipe it off the screen, if necessary. You can also make a Picture-in-Picture window go back to full screen by pressing the icon with the two rectangles again.

    Picture-in-Picture mode on an iPad.

Apple enhanced the iPad multitasking experience by introducing support for its Magic Trackpad. I recommend looking at our full how-to for more information, as many of the gestures are the sameyoure just making them on the trackpad instead of the screen.

There are some differences, though. For example, if you want to swipe through all the open apps without using the App Switcher, you need to use three fingers on the trackpad and swipe left or right. To perform the same action on the iPad screen itself, as weve seen, you need to use four fingers.

Im not sure why anyone would want to do this, as its hard enough to turn on the above features even intentionally, much less accidentally. But Apple gives you the option, anyway.

To do so, go to the Settings app, press Home Screen & Dock in the panel on the left, and then press Multitasking. From there, you can toggle off Allow Multiple Apps (i.e., Split View and Slide Over), Picture-in-Picture, and gestures.

Community rallies to help Vineland Soup Kitchen recover after act of vandalism – The Daily Journal

VINELAND An act of violence targeting the Vineland Soup Kitchen is bringing the community together to put it right.

So many people came forward, it turned something negative into a positive, soup kitchen volunteer Tony Centeno told The Daily Journal on Monday.

Over the weekend, someone hurled a rock that shattered the front window of the nonprofits East Landis Avenue office, which also serves as a storage facility.

The ministry, with no extra money to fund the repair, appealed for financial assistance. After volunteers installed plywood over the damage and swept up glass shards, offers of help came in from as far away as California.

Its amazing, the generosity of people that weve experienced, said Darlene Fielder, the soup kitchen director. My cell phone has been blowing up all weekend, people calling out of nowhere, people calling anonymously wanting to donate money to pay for the window.

A few soup kitchen supporters, including Lori Pepper King of Vineland, reached out to South Jersey Glass & Door.

I felt a tugging on my heart this morning from God and felt very strongly that I needed to do something,"she said.I contacted South Jersey Glass this morning.

But the South West Boulevard company was already on it and let King know that they were installing the glass at no charge to the soup kitchen.

It brought me to tears; our wonderful local community supporting each other, Kingsaid. God works wondrous deeds.

By Monday evening, the shattered 5-by-8-foot window was replaced.

The South Jersey Glass and Doormanagement and employees shunned any accolades, saying helping the soup kitchen during a tough time was just the right thing to do.

To help protect the office in the future, another donor is providinga security system, Fielder said.

Many others are making donations to support the soup kitchen, hosted by Spirit and Truth Ministries, said Matt Milam, the organization's board of trustees president, thanking the community for its show of support.

Meanwhile on social media, many wondered who could do the soup kitchen harm. Soup kitchen officialssaid they weren't notified of an arrest of asuspect, who reportedly wore a mask.

The vandalism did not impact themission to feedthose in need. Food is prepared in the kitchen locatedin the First United Methodist Church basementat Seventh Street and Landis Avenue.

On Monday, they nudged their output up to 175 meals, nearly double their pre-COVID-19 numbers. The pork chops, broccoli and fried cabbage takeouts quickly disappeared into the hands of those who showed up.

We were just discussing tomorrow, Im going to make 200 meals, Fielder said.

Withincreasing demand for hot meals, there areno worries just yet about bare cupboards.

The supply chain is currently stable through the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, based in Egg Harbor Township, and the Gateway Community Action Partnership of Bridgeton.

Were going to be fine;we know how to stretch food out, Fiedler said.

Its the unforeseen expenses that they need to hurdle.

The main expense is takeout containers and utensils. With coronavirus-related regulations closing their dining room, the soup kitchen must package meals to grab and go.

To arrange a donation, please call Spirit and Truth Ministries at 856-692-2603.

Contributions may be mailedto Spirit & Truth Ministries, P.O. Box 89, Vineland, N.J. 08362.

Official: Office 365 Personal, Home axed next month… and replaced by Microsoft 365 cloud subscriptions – The Register

    - March 31, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Microsoft on Monday teased a few future features of its Edge web browser and Teams slack-killer. It also announced the rebranding of its cloud productivity suite Office 365 as Microsoft 365 a subscription offering that already included Office 365, alongside Windows 10 Enterprise services and security features.

The Windows-and-cloud biz halted Edge stable channel updates ten days ago when Google's Chromium team did the same. This latest Edge revision, 80.0.361.69, for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android, was released on March 19 and Microsoft is only now getting around to shining a spotlight on its work.

The Edge update incorporates several previously trumpeted features. There's Collections, a form of rich media bookmarking; InPrivate mode, which gets rid of history, cookies, and site data when a session is closed; and Immersive Reader, a clutter suppression tool to make web pages more readable and accessible.

While the Stable update channel is on hiatus, Microsoft is promising features that haven't yet been fully baked. At some point in the not so distant future, we're assured, InPrivate mode will hide Bing searches, users will be able to display browser tabs vertically, Smart Copy will allow copying and pasting content in a way that retains rich web formatting, and there will be a Password Monitor service (similar to Chrome's and Firefox's) to notify users when credentials auto-saved in Edge show up on the internet.

In a blog post, Liat Ben-Zur, corporate VP of Microsoft Edge, said these features can be expected to appear in Edge Insider builds "in the next few months."

Like the Paul Masson Mountain Winery, which long ago via spokesperson Orson Welles proclaimed, "We will sell no wine before its time," Ben-Zur offered reassurance that Microsoft will ship Edge code only when it's ready.

"We will continue to be quality driven as we release new features," said Ben-Zur. "That means that all features will be tested in the Insider channels, starting in Canary and progressing to Stable only when we are satisfied with the level of stability and quality. If you downloaded the new Edge, all you have to do is wait."

Those who can't wait can try Edge 83.0.461.1, which debuted on Friday, via Microsoft's Edge Dev channel.

Microsoft however did have more present-focused news, by which we mean taking place only three weeks hence: On April 21, Office 365 will become Microsoft 365.

That means Office 365 Personal and Office 365 Home subscriptions will be replaced by Microsoft 365 Personal and Microsoft 365 Family subscriptions, $7 and $10 respectively per month. These represent the first consumer-focused Microsoft 365 subscriptions.

The company also announced two Microsoft 365 additions: the Microsoft Family Safety app and Microsoft Teams for consumers, which should show up in preview "in the coming months." Hopefully then coronavirus lockdowns will have abated, which means Redmond has missed another opportunity to expand.

The reason for the name change has something to do with AI: "An evolution of Office 365, Microsoft 365 builds on the foundation of Office infusing new artificial intelligence (AI), rich content and templates, and cloud-powered experiences to empower you to become a better writer, presenter, designer, manager of your finances, and deepen your connection to the people in your life," explained Yusuf Mehdi, corporate VP for modern life, search, and devices at Microsoft, in a blog post.

In practical terms, that means those crafting documents or other media in Microsoft 365 can get help from AI tools like an expanded version of Microsoft Editor. Accessible via Word and Outlook.com, and as a separate browser extension for Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome, Microsoft Editor does algorithmically-assisted spelling and grammar checking, as well as plagiarism detection. It can also offer Rewrite suggestions for those who can't come up with a suitable way to rephrase a particular passage.

The Family Safety app, for Android or iOS users with Microsoft 365 subscriptions, can manage screen time on Windows PCs, Android and Xbox, location sharing, and notifications. It will also provide parents with driving reports on inexperienced drivers without Microsoft promises ratting out careless kids to insurance companies and potentially inflating premium payments.

Alongside the consumer-oriented rebranding, some of Microsoft's small business-oriented offerings will get new names: Office 365 Business Essentials will become Microsoft 365 Business Basic; Office 365 Business Premium will become Microsoft 365 Business Standard; Microsoft 365 Business will become Microsoft 365 Business Premium; and Office 365 Business and Office 365 ProPlus will both become Microsoft 365 Apps.

But not all of them: Office 365 for Enterprise, Office 365 for Firstline Workers, Office 365 for Education, and Office 365 for Government will continue to be known by their birth names.

"Were always looking for ways to simplify," explained Jared Spataro, corporate VP for Microsoft 365 in a separate blog post. "This new approach to naming our products is designed to help you quickly find the plan you need and get back to your business."
