Robotics and automation are a staple of any vision of how we will live in the future. Among architects and designers, this trend crosses a variety of scales, from smart cities to smart kitchens. As we outlined in our Trends That Will Influence Architecture in 2019, recent years has seen a strengthening in how interior spaces are being transformed by technologies, with searches for Domotics soaring by 450% in twelve months.

    + 9

While utopian (and dystopian) visions of interior spaces alive with responsive automated systems are still largely unrealized, there is clear evidence from architecture firms and product manufacturers alike that the growing domination of robotics and automation we see in transport, finance, security and other sectors is also finding its feet in interior design. Below, we outline four areas where innovations have already been showcased and adopted.

While robotics is often envisioned as a tool for performance in interior spaces, its use also extends to aesthetics. In 2018, Carlo Ratti Associati (CRA) unveiled Scribit, a writing robot which draws images and text on any wall surface, turning office, living areas, and bathroom walls into a blank canvas for artistic expression. Using in-built engines, Scribit can draw, cancel, and re-draw new content an infinite number of times, allowing users to print different images, messages, or feeds every day.

Scribit is always connected to the internet, allowing users to download, upload or source any online content. Operating in real time, Scribit immediately reproduces any data sent to it by the user, be it a restaurant posting the days menu, a financial firm posting stock market updates in its lobby, or an art enthusiast projecting their own content on the living room wall.

The future of robotics in interior design will inevitably impact on how furniture is used and adapted, given how our increasing habitation of smaller spaces in cities calls for creative approaches to interior flexibility. Start-up innovators Bumblebee Spaces breaks the third dimension in pursuit of comfortable, efficient living, with what they describe as a robotic A.I. butler furniture system that deploys down from overhead by tapping a control pad or by voice command.

Drawing inspiration from minimalism and the KonMari anti-clutter movement, the Bumblebee system also creates a log of items kept in its timber storage cubes for long periods of time, gently reminding the user of when it may be time to let go of their long-forgotten possessions.

Interior lighting is a prime target for automation, given the existing technologies that sense human presence and movement through spaces. Automated lighting controls have the potential to save energy in homes by limiting excess light in unoccupied rooms, while also enhancing occupant safety and convenience. One such example from our product catalog is Gira, whose system of automatic lighting control extends through home entrances, drives, hallways, and staircases.

Meanwhile, the MIT Senseable City Lab has, through its Local Warming project, explored the possibilities of a thermal cloud following humans through interior space. This thermal cloud would allow for infrared heating elements to merge with motion tracking, creating a precise personal climate for every occupant of interior spaces, enhancing comfort while reducing unnecessary heating of empty rooms.

As we explored during our month-long focus on Innovation, home automation is even transforming rooms as basic and personal as bathrooms. While smart mirrors offer possibilities such as reading the news while brushing teeth, a new generation of showers are promising to save up to 90% of water and 80% of energy. These technologies constitute only a small fraction of the possibilities for the bathroom of the future. From body dryers to health-checking toothbrushes, to drawers that warm your towels, to flooring that sends out an alert if you fall, the possibilities seem endless.

With a vast array of robotic appliances and systems entering the market, architects and designers are faced with the challenge of designing and specifying for these systems implementation. Recently, we collaborated with AVE Chile to outline 8 tips on how architects can incorporate domotics into their next project, from testing systems before the process to installations by electrical specialists.

Light at the end of the tunnel; wildlife group looking to reunite Peli the pelican with flock – Revelstoke Review

    - March 5, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

A wildlife group is hoping to reunite a lone pelican with his flock after almost six months apart.

Since October 16, 2019, an endangered American White Pelican by the name of Peli has been on the mend in Burnaby, B.C. after becoming injured by a fishing line on the shores of a lake near Oliver.

This occurred while Peli and his family were migrating south for winter, towards warmer climates. After he was injured, his flock departed and left him alone. He has since been recovering from an injury and infection to his left wing.

READ MORE: Injured endangered white pelican found in Okanagan lake faces long road to recovery

Pelis injuries have since healed, however antibiotics and physiotherapy are still needed to help continue his healing. The wildlife group caring for him is hoping to raise enough funds to upgrade their aquatic centre so Peli can practice flying again.

The goal is to re-join him with his flock when they do return to the breeding grounds in Williams Lake, said Wildlife Rescue Association of BC communications coordinator, Vindi Sekhon.

Biologists are monitoring the breeding grounds for when his flock returns, which they anticipate will be in the spring.

In the meantime, veterinarians and wildlife technicians are focused on ensuring that Peli is in a proper state to be released.

This is the first time the group has had to keep an animal for such an extended period of time. This served as an especially unique situation for the team as they were not equipped to care for an animal, throughout the winter, which was used to temperatures of that in Mexico and California.

The team recently acquired an indoor heated pool, which helps animals like Peli recover and stay strong.

What were trying to do is, we dont want to habituate Peli because he has had an extended stay with us, said Sekhon.

To help achieve this the group is keeping minimal contact with the bird while ensuring he continues to recover.

On Tuesday morning (March 3) the Wildlife Rescue Association of BC launched a campaign in commemoration of World Wildlife Day. For five days the campaign will help promote Pelis story, in the hopes it will help return him to his flock.

So far the campaign has reached two per cent of its $48,000 goal, money they hope to receive in order to upgrade the aquatics centre to give Peli room to dive, bath and exercise his flight.

To learn more and donate to the cause, visit the fundraising website here.

The group says this will help ensure he is released in the right condition.

We dont want to return and rejoin Peli back with his flock if hes not adapted to that natural environment again, Sekhon explained. Thats always our goal at the end of the day.

Having an endangered pelican in their care centre, Sekhon said has been an amazing experience for them. However it has encouraged them to evolve and retrofit their facility in order to help endangered species like these recover.

She furthered that the group has received some questions from the public as to why they didnt already transport Peli south and return him with his flock. To this, she said its a complicated process, especially when the animal is injured.

The permits (to cross the border) state that the species need to pass the health check we werent really left with a choice; there was no way that we could have rejoined Peli with his flock because his injuries were so severe.

The wildlife group says this injury sustained by Peli shows the potential risk of human interference and disturbance.

It was a fishing line hook; it is a topic on its own, but also it just shows the impact that as humans we can have when we are sharing space with species, Sekhon said.

She said World Wildlife Day serves as a time to remember this.

Let’s Take a Moment to Appreciate Space Mountain…with the Lights On! – Inside the Magic

    - March 5, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

There are some things that Disniacs love to stop and watch no matter how many times theyve seen it happen. A monorail passing by, a log barrelling down the flume of Splash Mountain, and a glimpse into Space Mountian when the lights are turned on.

Today, some Magic Kingdom Park guests riding the peoplemover were lucky enough to get a lights-on view of the thrill ride for themselves. Yes, this isnt anything new, but Mondays are rough and to reward you all for making it through another Monday, we figured wed take a moment to relax and check it out. Besides, who doesnt want to see Space Mountain with the lights on?

Some park goers who were on the Magic Kingdom's PeopleMover Saturday got the chance to see Space Mountain's tracks with the lights on! Pretty cool! What's your favorite Disney ride?

Posted by WESH 2 News on Monday, March 2, 2020

You can also check out one of our older videos of Space Mountain with the lights on below:

The Space Mountain roller coaster is a pillar attraction at Walt Disney World and is the very symbol of Tomorrowland. Arguably the most sought-after of the Moutain Trifecta, it possesses a sense of mysticism to it. Its an indoor roller coaster where you rocket into outer space and speed across the galaxy. So, because youre supposed to be in outer space, you only ride this attraction in the dark. And because it only operates in the dark, Disney fans and Cast Members alike all have ride Space Mountain with the lights on somewhere on their Disney Bucket List and who can blame them? The rarer an experience is, the more value it holds, and the more special you would feel compared to other Disniacs.

But, after you see Space Mountain with the lights on, your perception of the ride is changed forever. In the above video, you can see how compact the track is and how low those crossbars appear. Those lucky enough to have ridden Space Mountain with the lights on will almost always say its scarier than riding it in the dark. Lets be honest, though, does that really change your mind about wanting to ride it like that?

Since the video posted today only shows an onlookers view, Inside the Magic has gone ahead and found a POV video that shows you what it would be like if you dared to ride this icon of the Magic Kingdom with the lights on.

Tell Sound Transit what you think of Kent/Des Moines light rail station… – Kent Reporter

    - March 5, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Sound Transit wants public input about the proposed designs for the Kent/Des Moines Link light rail station area and parking garage.

Sound Transit will extend the line 7.8 miles from Angle Lake Station in SeaTac at South 200th Street to the Federal Way Transit Center at South 317th Street. Construction will start later this year and is scheduled to be completed in late 2024, according to Sound Transit.

Passenger stations and parking garages will be built in Kent/Des Moines at 30th Avenue South and Pacific Highway South (500-space garage); at South 272nd Street near Interstate 5 in Kent (1,100-space garage); and at the Federal Way Transit Center (400-space garage).

Three new streets will be added at the Kent/Des Moines station to promote easy access for walking, bicycling and transit. Two large plaza areas will feature landscaping and public art.

In 2017, Sound Transit asked the public how they wanted the new Link light rail stations from Angle Lake to Federal Way to look and feel. Participants said they preferred designs that represent the community, are modern, and reflect Pacific Northwest character and the natural Puget Sound environment.

Sound Transit responded with a design that provides access to Highline College in Des Moines and surrounding neighborhoods and businesses. The station will have three landscaped streets to promote easy access by walking, bicycling and transit.

An additional plaza near the parking garage will include a covered seating area and space on the street for food trucks. The elevated station features a canopy with expressive steel framing and a glass clerestory that brings daylight into the center of the platform, provides good rain protection, and glows with warmth in the interior.

This stations art theme is Confluence; a weaving together of people, places and ideas. The station experience is intended to celebrate the neighborhoods energy and diversity and a blending of cultures and knowledge. Glass and sculpture artwork will showcase symbolism, patterns and family trees researched from the neighborhood.

Sound Transit proposes trees, plants and foliage that are drought resistant, provide seasonal interest and are low maintenance. Tree branches will be trimmed above head height, and shrubs will be trimmed to below knee height to provide good visibility through the foliage.

Curious about station-area designs for South 272nd Street or Federal Way Transit Center? Sound Transit will seek input on those stations in the coming months.

Rev up the process: Gardeners, start your seeds… – By Lynette Walther – Courier-Gazette & Camden Herald

    - March 5, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Lynette Walther | Mar 04, 2020

In the race to beat the season and get a crop of something ready to hit the ground running, savvy gardeners are thinking of -- if not already -- starting their seeds. Being able to get a leg up in the short growing season by starting seeds now is important.

Starting from seed is one of the most economical methods to gardening and the best way to get those new and unique varieties.

Starting seeds early enables local gardeners to grow varieties that might otherwise take too long to come into production for food or flowers if they were simply planted in the ground as seeds when the soil and nighttime temperatures were perfect. We know all seeds are not equal, they dont even all look alike, and they certainly do not germinate the same.

Soil temperature is key, and a quick check of any seed package gives the optimum temperature for starting that particular seed. When starting seeds indoors, in most cases your indoor temperatures will be sufficient to warm soil temperatures for germination. But there are varieties, like some watermelons for example, that prefer a soil temperature of 85 degrees.

To achieve a warm or warmer soil there are a few options. An electric seed-starting mat or heating can quickly raise the temperature in a flat. Or put the flat on top of a refrigerator. Remove flats to a sunny windowsill once the seeds have sprouted.

A good commercial seed starting mix is recommended to get the seeds off to a good start and avoid disease issues once they sprout.

Even though the daylight is getting longer each day, just keeping seedling flats on windowsills will not provide enough light. Light or the lack of it, is a challenge.

Seeds will need at least 16 hours of light each day, so plan on adding a light source for success. This can be a special grow light or a two-bulb shop-type light fitted with a warm and cool fluorescent tube bulb.

Many seeds, like those of beans, corn, gourds, squash, and nasturtiums and peas or sweet peas for example, benefit from soaking in tepid water anywhere from four to six hours to overnight before planting, depending on the thickness and hardness of the outer surface. Drain well before planting.

Try this technique with the new All-America Selections winner Blue Prince pumpkin which has vigorous trailing vines and produces nine to 10 blue, flattened pumpkins with deep-orange flesh and savory sweetness. Or get in a quick crop of Snak Hero, a new and improved snap pea All-America Selections winner for 2020.

Small seeds can be spread on a moistened paper towel and slipped into a plastic bag for this purpose. If you are soaking a number of seed varieties, place dish or sealed plastic bag on top of our next to that variety. In-ground planting of seeds can also employ the overnight soak method to speed germination.

This technique works well with Asian Delight pak choi which is compact, upright plant with tender and succulent stems, another All-America Selections winner for 2020. Or try the new a new tomato, a patio-type grape tomato with a bushy habit that is well-suited to container growing. This Selections winner produces uniform oblong sweet fruits.

Once seedlings develop their first true leaves they can be gently separated from flats and put into sixpacks or small pots to let them grown and develop healthy root systems. Depending on variety. Plant seedlings outdoors when soil warms to about 65 degrees and night-time temperatures are well above freezing. Beans, for example, will not set blooms until night-time temperatures are 60 degrees or above.

When planting outdoors, note that soil temperatures for most seeds will need to be 65 degrees or higher. To cheat this requirement, consider a raised bed in which the soil should warm up sooner than that on the ground. Container gardens can be warmed up indoors for a few days before planting.

Or for in-ground planting, cover the soil with a sheet of clear plastic a week before you plant to sow the seeds. If the weather remains clear and sunny, it should allow the sun to warm it up.

It is one small investment that will pay off in the long run and that sheet of plastic can be saved and then used many years.

Richards Bar Stabbing Suspect Charged With Second-Degree Murder – Eater Chicago

    - March 5, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

The man who police said fatally stabbed a 23-year-old man outside Richards Bar has been charged with second-degree murder, according to a spokesperson for the Cook County states attorneys office. Thomas Tansey is scheduled to appear in bond court on Thursday after police took him into custody on Wednesday, which is all after they released him three days after the February 21 slaying in River West.

On that Friday night, 30-year-old Tansey allegedly stabbed Kenny Paterimos multiple times with a box cutter outside the bar after using a homophobic slur. Paterimos, a barista, was bisexual. Paterimos and Tansey had a confrontation inside the bar, which led to Tanseys ejection from Richards, police said. Paterimos would leave his brothers side for a cigarette. When he left the bar, police said Tansey attacked him. Police said Paterimos came back inside the dive bar after he was wounded. His brother would rush outside to apprehend Tansey, pinning him until police arrived.

Charges werent filed until Wednesday as police had released Tansey after he claimed he killed Paterimos in self defense. Police continued to investigate as Tansey remained free. Police then issued a murder warrant on Sunday for Tanseys arrest.

Meanwhile, Paterimoss family and friends plus supporters gathered Tuesday night outside of Richards Bar to protest. Sporting T-shirts and holding up signs, they expressed anger that Tansey was released and felt Richards Bars employees and customers were not cooperating with police to apprehend Tansey.

Paterimoss mother, Diona Bueno, addressed the crowd of under 100 on Tuesday night. In an emotional batch of comments, Bueno stood in front of Richards Bars main door. She called for Mayor Lori Lightfoot to shut the bar down.

He was not a nice man, and I tried, God knows I tried to forgive him, Bueno said of Tansey, an ex-Marine. I believe in all my military men, I believe in my city, I believed in the police and they havent done a hot-damn frickin thing.

Bueno made those comments as a police office slipped in behind her inside the bar, trying to keep peace between protesters and bar workers. Bar staff would lock their doors and prevent Bueno and other protesters from entering. Bueno repeatedly pounded on the door, asking for admittance so she could pray and say farewell to her son.

Many of the protesters believe Richards Bar didnt do enough to bring Tansey into custody, claiming they had a disregard of law. They cited how the bar ignores city law which bars indoor smoking in public places as customers are free to light up during most days. But on Tuesday, the bar was on its best behavior. With police swarming the area, there was no indoor smoking on Tuesday night. Richards Bar, near the Grand, Milwaukee, and Halsted intersection, is a popular destination after most bars close at 2 a.m.

Tansey is scheduled for a bond hearing at noon at 26th Street and California Avenue, according to the states attorneys office.

The Hyundai Prophecy concept has joysticks instead of a steering wheel – Business Insider – Business Insider

    - March 5, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Hyundai has a new electric concept car called the Prophecy, which, as its name suggests, offers a sneak peek at what the brand's future EVs may look like.

If the car is anything to go by, the future looks pretty darn good.

Hyundai debuted the concept on Tuesday, showing it off with a video presentation after the Geneva International Motor Show was canceled amid coronavirus concerns. It's electric and autonomous, but like most concept cars, it's just an exaggerated idea of what the future will look like not a solidified production model.

But with its looks echoing part Tesla Model 3 and part Porsche 911, the Prophecy sports a sleek, fastback shape, pixelated headlights, and a clear-acrylic spoiler out back.Hyundai might have gone a bit far with the language in its press release describing the Prophecy as "sensuous," "voluptuous," and fostering "an emotional connection between humans and automobiles" but the Prophecy is, at least, stunning.

The car's interior may prove a bit more controversial than the exterior, however, since Hyundai has done away with a steering wheel in favor of a pair of joysticks. Hyundai said in using the joysticks, the driver can "control the vehicle from a position of comfort," while autonomous technology pilots the car.

Scroll down to see inside the Prophecy, Hyundai's beautiful new concept car that hints at an equally beautiful future for its EVs.

The Return of Gage & Tollner, a Victorian Haunt With a New Vibe – The New York Times

    - March 5, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

The plastic sign, about 10 feet long with A-R-B-Y-S spelled vertically, lay on its side by a ladder and some construction tools.

Do you want it? Sohui Kim, the chef and an owner of the Brooklyn restaurants the Good Fork and Insa, asked a visitor. You can have it.

That made it official: Gage & Tollner, one of the most storied restaurants in New York food history, is finally reopening on March 15. Workers hoisted a new Gage & Tollner sign into place, marking the end of a string of businesses, including an Arbys franchise, that opened in this Brooklyn space on Fulton Street after the dining institution closed in 2004.

In the restaurants newly modernized kitchen, Ms. Kim and the chef de cuisine, Adam Shepard, considered whether some newly arrived cuts of meat were Gage-worthy. Upstairs, in private halls recently christened the Edna Lewis Room and the Dewey Room, after a former Gage chef and a former owner, applicants waited in hopes of landing a position.

Finding the right staff and writing the right menu have been consuming concerns for Ms. Kim and her partners Ben Schneider Ms. Kims husband and co-owner of the Good Fork and Insa and St. John Frizell, the owner of the Red Hook, Brooklyn, bar Fort Defiance.

Right now, were getting a lot of feedback from the Gage & Tollner superfans, Mr. Frizell said. But really thats going to be less than 5 percent of our audience, so were going to have to play to a bigger crowd.

They want to honor the resurrected restaurants past as a destination for seafood and meat, while simultaneously appealing to contemporary tastes and expectations. When people talk about the culinary memories, Ms. Kim said, they talk about the space, how they felt, the lights, the majesty of being in the room. Then you ask them what they had for dinner, and they dont remember.

Gage & Tollner, named for the restaurateurs Charles Gage and Eugene Tollner, opened in 1879, and moved to its present location in 1892. As Brooklyns answer to Delmonicos, the restaurant was an elegantly appointed dining temple that served seafood, chops and steaks, and it attracted celebrities like Mae West, Lillian Russell, Jimmy Durante and members of the Brooklyn Dodgers. The handful of owners who succeeded the originals were careful to preserve its Victorian atmosphere, though that became less of a choice than an obligation when the interior was declared a landmark in 1975.

Despite some cosmetic changes, the new interior wont look too different. As stewards of dining history, the current owners had to approve every change and fix with the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, including repair work on the original wooden revolving door; the laying of new floors (stained red oak downstairs, white oak upstairs); the replacement of the upholstered wall panels; the repair of the crumbling portico; and the polishing of the many brass chandeliers (a three-week process), which once dispensed both gas and electrical light. All told, restoration, infrastructure and equipment costs have totaled roughly $2 million.

The food, too, will be a mix of the familiar and the innovative. There will be no second act for crab meat Virginia, a staple that wasnt much more than crab and butter. But diners will get a soft-shell clam belly broil made with Ipswich clams, a popular menu item in its day.

Ms. Kim also wanted to serve a true mutton chop the meat comes from Thistle Creek Farms in Pennsylvania. I want it to be mutton, she said. I think there are some restaurants who are serving lamb wink, wink. We wont serve lamb and call it mutton.

There will also be crab cakes, a shrimp cocktail, housemade Parker House rolls, shrimp scampi with gnudi, four different cuts of steak and a raw bar. Ms. Kim plans to keep it simple: Its all about getting amazing ingredients, she said.

Other dishes will be completely new. Instead of a chicken potpie, Mr. Shepard has fashioned a pork potpie with a light pte brise dough and a lighter gravy. Mr. Shepard is not your average chef de cuisine. His long rsum includes Lunetta, Union Pacific and Tavern on the Green. When he read about the Gage project, he reached out to Ms. Kim.

The upstairs bar, called the Sunken Harbor Club, will serve nine cocktails that Mr. Frizell called pre-tiki classics, like the Singapore Sling and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. The bar was designed by Mr. Frizell and Mr. Schneider, and built by Mr. Schneider; its angled wooden ceiling and walls look like the galley of a ship.

All of the 25 cocktails on the downstairs opening menu are drawn from the original Gage cocktail list, with the exception of a Negroni, an agave drink (tequila and mezcal not being popular drinks during Gages heyday) and a dirty martini.

That martini will be served not in the currently fashionable coupe, but in a traditional martini glass. I like the straight-sided glass, Mr. Frizell said. Bring em back!
