This is the first column in a series in which Id like to share with you how technology has helped improve building products. Ive worked in the residential construction industry for decades. In that time, Ive gotten a firsthand perspective on new products.
Not all of them have worked out so well, and sometimes it takes several permutations until a manufacturer gets it right. The same thing goes for techniques. Early in my career, I spent years taking apart 100-year-old houses and was able to see how the old-school craftsmen built.
Some of their methods are far better than the way things are done today. Ill share much of that with you in this series that will unfold as the year progresses.
Today Id like to dive into plumbing. Its a system that causes consternation with many consumers because repairs can be costly. You might imagine that not much has changed in plumbing, given that pipes and fixtures are pretty simple, but youd be wrong.
Lets start with simple advancements in drainage and water supply piping. Go back in time, and plumbers used cast iron, galvanized iron and copper for drain lines.
In rare instances, theyd have to use a lead pipe to make certain drains work. The old cast iron was susceptible to leaks and cracks because of how it was made. Galvanized iron pipes would corrode and start to choke off with deposits causing clogs.
Todays cast iron is spun cast and has a uniform wall thickness. You create leakproof joints in seconds with rubber gaskets and stainless-steel band clamps. Its the perfect material to use for vertical stacks in your home to prevent noise caused by water cascading down large-diameter vertical pipes.
The plastics industry exploded in the 1960s, and codes permitted plastic drainpipes. Plastic drain lines perform well; Ive installed miles of it. Not long ago, it experienced another technology jump when it was made lighter than the first-generation plastic. You can buy foam-core plastic drain pipe now.
Water supply lines many years ago were made using galvanized iron. These would suffer from corrosion and choke off, too. Copper became the standard, but here, too, plastic muscled its way into the marketplace. Imagine installing plastic water lines in a new home that have no joints or fittings.
Its installed much like an electric cable. Thats what I did at my daughters new home. The only joints are in the mechanical room at a distribution manifold and the shut-off valve under a sink or where the pipe connects to a shower or tub valve.
I installed all the water supply lines to four bathrooms, a kitchen and five outdoor hose bibs in less than four hours. Using traditional copper with hundreds of fittings, I might have gotten part of one bathroom done in that same amount of time.
Copper water lines also have seen tremendous technological advancements. In a recent column, I shared with you the new fittings that require no solder. You can create a leak-proof joint in less than five seconds using fittings that contain a rubber O-ring. You cant imagine how much time these save. The best part is you never have to wonder if a soldered joint will leak.
Accessory plumbing products also have seen changes. For years, the plumbing vent pipe flashing up on your roof has been made with a standard rubber that gets destroyed by the sun in just a few years and then starts to leak. You can now buy a vent-pipe flashing that has a superior siliconized rubber boot that might not be destroyed by the sun for five or more decades.
Water supply lines that connect sink faucets, toilet tanks and washing machines to the water supply have seen changes. Not very long ago, plumbers had to bend soft copper tubes to make connections. Washing machines used old rubber hoses. Now you as a DIYer can use flexible hoses protected by braided stainless steel wire to make leakproof connections in seconds.
Faucet manufacturers continue to make improvements with the cartridges that control the water flow when you turn a handle. I remember years ago having to change rubber washers inside faucets to stop drips.
It used to take skill to change a washer to stop a faucet leak. Now you can stop faucet drips without calling a plumber. With the plethora of how-to videos on the internet, you can switch out a faucet cartridge faster than you might read this column.
My advice to you, if using a brand-new product, is to read the installation instructions and be sure everything is being done correctly. Also, keep in mind that the first generation of new products might not have all the bugs worked out.
If youre installing a product thats going to be hidden behind walls or under slabs, think about using one that has been around for several years so you dont become a statistic. Go with proven technology in these situations.

Potato peels down the kitchen sink. Loose hair swirling through the tub drain. The little plastic soldier your toddler gave a bath in the toilet. Clogs happen. When water isnt draining as quickly as it shouldor, worse, isnt draining at allyour first move could be a call to a plumber. But if youd prefer to save money, time, and aggravation, reach for a drain snake.
Also called a plumbing snake or drain auger, this handy tool is simply a long, thick, flexible wire that snakes into drains and pipes to chew through clogs quickly and efficiently. But these blockage busters come in different types and sizes, depending on the recommended use. To help you choose and use the right drain snake, whether for a stopped-up toilet or a slow-moving sink, weve got the 411 on what to look forand rounded up the five best drain snakes recommended by plumbers and homeowners alike for effectiveness and ease of use.
Drain snakes come in a few standard lengths and thicknesses. For the average homeowner who needs to unclog a sink, tub, or shower, a 25-foot cable between and 5/16 of an inch thick is sufficient to tackle common household issues. If you live in a multi-story home with bathrooms upstairs, look for a snake with a 50-foot cable capable of reaching clogs in longer pipes.
For a more serious clog in your homes main water pipes, blockages further down the kitchen sink drain than your typical food clog, or problems with washing machine drainage, a tougher drain snake designed to handle larger pipes with bigger clogs is called for. Sometimes called medium drain machines, these powerful tools typically have a thicker cableoften inch in diameterand extend up to 75 feet to reach down deep into plumbing lines.
There are two basic types of heads at the tip of a drain snakes cable: cutting heads and coil heads. Some drain snakes allow you to switch out the heads, but most have one fixed head.
Most of the drain snakes used by the average homeowner have a small crank thats turned by hand to advance and retract the cable. These manual drain snakes are fine for occasional use around the house to unclog simple blockages in your kitchen or bathroom sink, tub, or toilet. If you expect to use your drain snake on a regular basis (perhaps you live in an older home with temperamental plumbing, or have family members unsure of what should not be put down the drain), or you need to tackle major clogs in water mains, downspouts, or washing machines, you might prefer the extra muscle and reduced hand strain of an electric drain snake. These tools advance and retract the cable at the push of a button, and power their way through very stubborn clogs. Youll pay for that oomph, however: As a general rule, while manual drain snakes are fairly inexpensive, youll pay three or four times that amount for an electric plumbing snake.
Here are five drain snakes for a variety of uses that win rave reviews for getting the job done quickly and relatively easily.
Whether the clog is in your kitchen sink, bathroom sink, shower drain, or tub drain, the RIDGID Power Spin can come to the rescue. Its manual crank sends the 25-foot, -inch cable twisting and turning its way down your pipes, while the screw-shaped head chews through semi-solid clogs and also catches and retrieves hair, paper, or other fibrous gunk. But if you want a little more power than a hand-crank can provide, just attach the drain snake to your power drill, and voila! Now its an electric plumbing snake. Reviewers praise its effectiveness and the convenience using it either manually or with a power drill.
While almost any drain snake can clear clogs from a toilet, theres a risk of scratching or damaging the porcelain bowl in the process. Not so with the RIDGID K-3 Toilet Auger, which has a vinyl protective sheath over the metal cable to prevent unsightly scratches. This drain snake is also specifically designed for toilets: Position the rigid 30-inch tube inside the toilet so the rubber foot rests right at the bowls outlet, and then crank the three-foot cable down and through the twists and turns of the plumbing. The kink-resistant, super-flexible cable is long enough to reach simple blockages, and the bulbous coiled head easily breaks through soft clogs so they can flush away, but catches and retrieves more solid problems, including diapers, wadded toilet paper, flushed toys, and dropped jewelry. Pleased buyersnotethat it made quick work of busting through even stubborn clogs that plungers couldnt budge.
One of the most common causes of slow-draining bathroom sinks and shower or tub drains is a wad of shed hair in the drainpipe. Luckily, the FlexiSnake Drain Weasel is designed to catch and retrieve balls of hair and gunk from a sink, shower,or tub drain. Crank the handle to send the 18-inch flexible snake down the drain and let its bristly tip, covered with micro-hooks, grab onto clumps of hair. Once the clog is gone, you can toss away the head of the snake (five replacement snake heads are included)no need to store a dirty, gunky tool. Reviewersrave about how effectively it works.
Tough clogs require tough solutionsjust what youll get with the TACKLIFE Drain Auger. This battery-powered drain snake has enough muscle to push through all manner of clogs in pipes with widths between to three inches in diameter, which includes all types of sinks, tubs, showers, downspouts, and most garden irrigation systems. The cable is 25 feet long with a corkscrew-shaped head, and the lithium-ion battery charges quickly and remains charged until the job is done. Theres even a small LED work light at the base of the handleno need to hunt down a flashlight. Handy homeowners praise its ability to tackle clogs that otherwise would have required a plumbers services.
When dealing with a clog beyond the reach of the typical drain snake, you need the extra length provided by the Cobra Products 50-Foot Drain Auger. Its flexible cable is -inch thick andits corkscrew head plows through most common obstructions. Be aware, however, thatmanually cranking an extra-long drain snake takes quite a bit of muscle and perseverance. Many reviewers mention their surprise athow well it conquered even tough clogs in both indoor and outdoor plumbing.

For those who have never heard of it, the Peter Principle is a concept in management developed by Dr. Laurence J. Peter which basically states that people are promoted in a company organization until they reach their level of incompetence. An employee gets promoted based on their success at a job until they reach a position where they (paradoxically) are no longer good at the job; where the knowledge and skills that made them successful at their former position are just not what is required for success at their new position.
It took business management leaders in America a long time to recognize this was happening (the book that introduced the principle to the world, The Peter Principle by Dr. Peter and Raymond Hull wasnt published until 1969) and still longer to address it, which is why the embrace of servant leadership by our Contractor of the Year, TDIndustries all the way back in 1972 is just one of the many remarkable things about the company. (You can read our full feature here.)
On the company web site you can find a video that features Jack Lowe, Jr., son of company founder Jack Lowe, Sr. In it he talks about the companys turn to servant leadership, which came about after a series of company-wide, small-group meetings.
In it he says, We discovered we were doing a lots of technical training, in plumbing or engineering or accounting or whatever it was, and no training in leadership. And as complicated as plumbing or accounting is, its nowhere near as complicated as people. So we were having people promoted to plumbing foreman because they were the best plumber or accounting manager because they were the best accountant, and they were failing, or having trouble. So we started leadership development built around servant leadership in the early seventies.
Its a profound change of mind-set to see yourself, as a leader, through the eyes of your employees. To manage not as a disciplinarian or even really as a director, but as a teacher, a source of knowledge and experience, and above all as a role model; to have your success as a leader be more than the numbers on a spreadsheet, but instead be the growth and development of the people on your teamand hopefully setting them on the path as servant leaders in their own right.
And its the perfect approach for an employee-owned company like TD, where everyone is a partner, all sharing in one another's successes which in aggregate become the companys success. The quality of the work TD performs for its clients is really a reflection of that company culture.
Its a business model that extends outward, beyond TDIndustries to the wider community. With their work first to integrate and later support the local schools, with their work fighting homelessness in the Dallas area, with the time company partners spend volunteering, you can see how they have embraced the idea of community leadership through community service.
The best part of working in the trade press is being able to shine a spotlight on those companies and individuals that are really doing amazing things for their clients, their employees, and their community. In that spirit, we are very proud to name TDIndustries our Contractor of the Year.

Litz & Eatons portfolio includes Liberty Place at Lockerbie Square.(IBJ photo/Mickey Shuey)
Indianapolis-based development firm Litz & Eaton Investments LLCwhose principals are entangled in several legal battles as part of a messy splithas sold three properties to other local companies who plan to move forward with developing the sites.
Brad Litz and John Eaton agreed to sell a one-acre lot at the southwest corner of North Park Avenue and East North Street to Integra Builders, a Fishers-based custom home builder.
The sale, which closed Jan. 9, will allow the Liberty [emailprotected] Square projectan $8 million, 12-unit condominium development comprised of five buildingsto move forward as planned, Litz said in an email to IBJ. The project had been expected to be finished by February.
Integra also this month bought the firms Fall Creek Villas townhouse project at the southwest corner of Delaware Street and East Fall Creek Parkway South Drive. The $2 million project comprised of five 2,100-square-foot town homes, was supposed to be completed by mid-2019.
Litz said Integra plans to break ground on both projects in the near or immediate future, but he did not offer specifics on the firms timeline. Both he and Eaton will are expected to consult separately on the projects.
In addition to the properties bought by Integra, Litz & Eaton also this month sold five lots along Leon Street, just south of the Liberty Square development, to TKW Builders, which plans to construct five single-family homes. Litz is consulting on the project.
Financial details of the three sales were not disclosed.
Integra has built several upscale condo, townhome and custom home developments throughout central Indiana, including several in Fountain Square, Broad Ripple, Fishers, Carmel and Zionsville. The company declined to comment.
The projects on the lots bought by Integra each stalled after Eaton and Litz split in June amid allegations of financial misconduct. The breakup has spurred a handful of lawsuits against the men, separately and jointly, including one Eaton filed against Litz.
One such suit was directly tied to the Liberty Place property. Elements Financialwhich in April 2019 agreed to provide a $5.8 million construction loan for the projectfiled suit in October and placed a lien on the property in hopes of forcing a foreclosure on the loan.
Elements filing sought to recover an outstanding balance of $1.1 millionin addition to interest, legal fees, collection costs, and late feesfor land acquisition, architectural fees and other pre-construction expenses.
To settle the dispute and avoid foreclosure, Eaton and Litz agreed to deed the property to an Integra subsidiary, SIG LLC. The transfer released the lien Elements filed on the property and the lawsuit was dismissed Jan. 14.
An update on the Liberty Place project will likely be heard by the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commissionwhich has authority over development in the historic Lockerbie neighborhoodin the coming months, after updated filings have been submitted.
John Eaton did not return a call requesting comment.

Northwest Natural has announced plans for the 2020 edition of the annual Parade of Homes, presented by DeWils and HomeStreet Bank.
A kickoff ceremony will be at 10 a.m. Feb. 5 at Magnolia Heights in Washougal. The site is built off of Southeast McKever Road, which branches off from Southeast Crown Road.
The 38-lot development from Vancouver-based Waverly Homes includes seven lots set aside for the parade. The developments lots average about 8,500 square feet, and the overall site plan calls for homes ranging from 2,500 to 4,000 square feet and a price range from $850,000 to $1.3 million.
Last years Parade of Homes opened to the public during September and featured six homes at the Dawsons Ridge development in western Camas. The 2020 parade will be the third in a row in the east county; the 2018 parade was at the Camas Meadows Golf Course.
The parade homes are typically pre-sold and built to match the specifications of the buyers; but once theyre complete, they become part of the public parade tour for about two weeks before the owners move in. The parade typically includes a mix of homes from several builders.

Tech start-up Higharc aims to "reinvent home design for the digital age," reports the Financial Times. The company uses iterative design to create "custom" 3D models and plans. Algorithmic design isn't new to architecture, but it looks like Higharc seeks to do away with "expensive, architect-designed plans that take forever to produce."
According to theFinancial Times, Marc Minor, founder and CEO of Higharc, said that the company's system is "faster than existing best-in-class design software for homes...there are sophisticated algorithms behind the scenes continuously determining crucial details that typically take hours of manual effort."
Additionally, Pamela Wallgreen, co-founder of a start-up calledFinch 3D, "whose software that automates repetitive tasks and guides architects through the design process" through simulation and AI encouraged architects to take advantage of these new emerging technologies.

Geordie Murray packed a lot of fun and adventure into his life, says his mother. When he died last week in a hunting accident near Calgary, he left behind a huge group of people who will be forever touched by the kindness he always showed in whatever he did, said Kath Murray.
He lived so fully and were just grateful we had him for 30years.
Kath said her son had gone to Calgary to pick up some parts for a vehicle, met up with friends while he was there and went hunting.
Geordie suffered a gunshot wound and died, despite first-aid efforts.
He had been married for almost two years to Shauna, who is expecting a baby in July. An online fundraising page has been started on her behalf.
Kath said Geordie had challenges stemming from some serious concussions, including one in a car crash, but he worked through them.
In some ways, he probably learned compassion more because of the brain injuries and of the subsequent mental-health issues that he had, she said.
And in some ways, that makes him even more special, because he was so determined to keep getting up, day after day after day.
His strong commitment to his faith was a major part of that, Kath said.
One of five children for her and Ted, Geordie attended Keating Elementary School, Bayside Middle School and Stellys Secondary School. He went on to take classes at Camosun College and Okanagan College.
In school, Geordie was blessed with teachers and principals who worked with him, Kath said.
Fellow Stellys student George Ellsworth took Geordie under his wing and saw that he finished all of his carpentry assignments in high school, she said. Geordie spent a lot of time at the Ellsworth home and on one occasion was there when an early-morning fire broke out next door. Thats when his character shone through, she said.
Geordie was in his boots and out that door so quick, Kath said. The house was on fire he ran in and got somebody out and then he went back in.
He ended up getting three people to safety, the last one after he went directly through the fire.
There was also the time he and some friends offered to tow a stuck vehicle up a snowy hill. Another vehicle would show up and they would tow it, then another, until theyd towed about 10 people.
Kath said her son was just so eager and happy to help.
Geordie was a Red Seal carpenter and worked in Vanderhoof for about a year before spending time working with a builder in Calgary. He moved from there to Salmon Arm and then back to Victoria to build custom homes, and started his own business, Country Way Contracting.
His idea was that its kind of the old-country way, shake a hand on something and theres some integrity there, Kath said. That was very important to him.
As a hospice palliative care nurse, she said, she has had a lot of exposure to death.
But we werent planning in it being Geordie.
His funeral is being held at 1p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 701 Mann Ave.
