Recent years have seen lighting combine black chrome and gold finishes. Now, warm tones of natural brass, bronze and copper mixed with silver and black will be found across lighting designs, cabinet pulls and plumbing hardware. Move over, stainless steel! Just remember to keep the look uncluttered by not mixing more than two or three metals in one space.

Geometric shapes are dominating design trends. Adding lighting in triangle, diamond, hexagonal or combination of geometric shapes is one of the easiest ways to transform a space and add wow-factor. Edi Swan, scenic artist, art teacher and technical director. Born: 2 August, 1935 in Footdee, Aberdeen. Died 2 December, 2019 in Ellon, aged 84

Aberdeens picturesque fishing village of Footdee has developed quite a reputation in recent years as a draw for artists but perhaps few so versatile as one of its own sons, Edi Swan.

Born in the colourful community that hugs the shore at the entrance to Aberdeen Harbour, he grew up running free and barefoot all summer, diving off the pier with the North Sea as the backdrop that has inspired countless creatives.

He followed his cousin Bill Baxter, one of the influential ABBO group of painters, into art school and was still a student when a chance request for a replacement scene painter provided the catalyst for a 50-year association with the citys celebrated His Majestys Theatre.

Throughout that time he was a set designer, full-time teacher, jobbing artist, potter, interior designer, author, public speaker, champion of arts in the curriculum and campaigner for the retention and renovation of Aberdeens Tivoli Theatre. This enthusiasm for a diverse range of artistic endeavours brought him into the realm of everyone from the Womens Rural Institute (WRI) to Charlton Heston and the Rolling Stones.

One of six children to a trawler owners daughter and a commercial clerk, his childhood in Fittie, as it is known locally, was idyllic until the Second World War. With the harbour a target for bombers the whole area was cordoned off and the children needed a special pass to get to St Clements Street School. Several lost a parent when Hall Russell shipyard and the nearby Neptune Bar were bombed in July 1940.

After the war the family moved to a new home on the outskirts of the city and he attended the Central School. He was a 20-year-old student at Aberdeens Grays School of Art when he married his wife Sheila and was still studying when their first daughter arrived the following year an event that saw the whole art school close for the afternoon to celebrate.

His future in the theatre was sealed in his third year when repertory company the Whatmore Players appealed for a scene painter after their own artist broke her arm. The art school head gave Swan his blessing and the move inadvertently led to a twist in his name: hed been christened Edward but when chief scenic artist Ani Jasper noted down his name for the programme credits she adopted her own style and immortalised him as Edi.

He soon became involved in Aberdeens hugely popular Student Show and was in charge of set design for more than a decade. Passionate about that particular theatre skill, he created sets for many stars including Andy Stewart and Scotland the What, plus amateur companies, school and church drama groups, and particularly liked to utilise His Majestys revolving stage. He was also involved in Aberdeen Puppet Players, creating puppets, posters and programmes.

Meanwhile he was also teaching full-time. Having been exempted from national service due to the shortage of art teachers, he started at Aberdeens Torry Academy before moving on to Peterhead and Turriff Academies. By the mid-1960s he was head of art at Ellon Academy and he and Sheila now had two daughters and a son.

As the family grew so did their home and Swan developed another skill housebuilder almost single-handedly, erecting a living room and garage at one property.

Promotion at work saw him become assistant head teacher at Ellon in 1975 and two years later he was appointed to the Munn Committee on restructuring the S3 and S4 curriculum, when he made the case for an emphasis on the creative arts.

His Majestys Theatre continued to feature large in his life and, when the theatre director overhead him joke about applying for the retiring stage managers job, he promptly offered him the new role of technical director. It put him in charge of everything behind the curtain as well as overseeing significant renovations which were celebrated at a gala re-opening with Prince Charles in 1982.

During the revamp Swan recorded and, with the help of an art school expert, restored the buildings dozens of stained glass panels, hand-painting, firing and fitting each to match the original design.

In 1986 he completed a diploma in management studies, earning top prize amongst his peers for his thesis on Communication as a Management Skill in the Theatre Industry.

Well-known in theatrical circles for his skill behind the scenes, he was also very much a public face of the institution. He enjoyed welcoming audiences front-of-house in his dinner suit and developed the Dress Circle bar as a gallery space, introduced the concept of theatre artist in residence, instigated backstage tours, created the Theatre Club and reputedly had many encounters with Jake, the theatres friendly headless ghost.

He worked with stars such as Charlton Heston, to whom he presented a caricature of the American in full Highland dress, at a party following his appearance in A Man for All Seasons. Swan also put his artistic skills to good use when the Rolling Stones kicked off their UK tour at Aberdeens Capitol, painting a huge banner for the venue advertising the groups appearance.

He also created murals for public buildings, painted watercolours, did interior design for a local golf club and an historic coaching inn and produced the logo that Ellons Ythan Bakery still sports on its paper bags today.

In retirement, following a triple bypass in 1992, he became honorary theatre activist, wrote a History of His Majestys and a history of Aberdeen Music Hall and devoted a great deal of time to saving the future of the citys Tivoli theatre. Swan, who spent years travelling to WRI meetings giving talks on HMT, was made a Burgess of the Guild of the City of Aberdeen for his contribution to cultural life.

Never star struck he regarded his teaching and theatre careers as equally important and those in theatrical world as simply fellow professionals.

Predeceased by his wife, he is survived by their children Susan, Fiona and Gary and extended family.

PERRY, Ga. Spring will bring warmer weather and two brand new parks in Perry.

Heritage Park is getting a makeover and will soon be home to the city's annual music festival along with some of the other "Perry Presents" events.

"Because you can't really see it from the street, a lot of the public hasn't really noticed what is going on," said the city's landscape manager Ansley Fitzner.

She said phase I is creating an amphitheater-style lawn with a stage, and phase II will include a walking trail, restrooms, and a retention pond.

This 20-acre park will cost around $1.13 million, and not too far down the road will be the new Legacy Park, which will cost around $625,000 and will be just under one acre.

She said Legacy Park will be a veterans memorial park with a reflection pool and flagpoles.

"I think the city sort of had this plan and then they were just waiting for funding to get into place," said Fitzner.

She said she's just excited to see what this means for the future of Perry.

"Perry is growing and they're also starting to see that we can become a sort of a destination for the region and by doing things like this, it brings people in to see what a great place we are."

Parrish Construction Group and Fitzner said both parks will be finished by spring 2020.

Heritage Park is located at 2005 Sam Nunn Boulevard and Legacy Park is on the corner of Main Street and Courtney Hodges Boulevard.

What customers love and what I love to give them in their homes are features such as smart lighting, where one button can turn off the whole house or the kids rooms from the kitchen. Also, they love events happening in an automated way, such as window shades dropping as the sun sets to keep the sun out of their eyes.

There are two features that clients really appreciate in our installs. The main would be the single interface for anything related to technology in their home. The other would be stable, consistent, Wi-Fi. They are so used to Wi-Fi being unstable that when we put in Ruckus they are blown away that it just works every day.

We are finding that our clients are loving the way that video displays can be hidden when not in use. From TV lifts in cabinets, art lifts like Media Decor, panel back rise systems, and The Frame and Seura mirror displays are all in high demand. We had a client who saw these products in action, and they ended up with three lifts, two display mirrors, and one hidden door mount system. I believe that once a client sees these technologies in action that they want them in their homes.

As of late, we have found that voice control, motorization, and big beautiful displays have been big in the dazzling department. Amazing blended and hidden outdoor technology has also been a big wow factor this past year as well. Being able to totally hide and disguise amazing sounding audio paired with the ability to hide a big display in the ground with motorization has been jaw dropping for our clients.

Most clients are still blown away by the simple fact of an RF or IR repeating system controlling their gear in another room or behind closed cabinetry. When you hand them the smart remote and they can press a single button that fires up the entire systemremoving all complexitythey are always impressed by that.

We love to experience the first time a client hears a well-designed landscape/pool audio system, complete with buried subwoofer, in their new outdoor entertainment space. Their excitement is quite fulfilling to our entire team!

I think the feature that dazzles our customers the most are the one-app solutions from our integrated control systems. The specific feature that our clients appreciate is off-site remote control of their house environmental systems, including monitoring of security systems, cameras, lights, and temperatures..

Nothing seems to bring a smile to clients faces like a properly designed and installed audio system. At times it feels like a low bar: a proper music source, a good amplifier, and decent speakers (and subwoofers) that all consider the room. After the apocalypse comes a little scavenger, moving over the broken landscape, searching for life. But this scavenger does not move like a scavenger - they do not move furtively, tentatively. Doomsday Vault has a control scheme based around swiping and holding in one of four directions to move. It makes your little on-screen avatar feel rather truck-like. Forward, backwards, turn, reverse. After the apocalypse who is left to ask them to be more elegant?

Doomsday Vault is at least two games, I think, but I haven't spent enough time with it to understand the second. The first sees you venturing out across various shattered locations, finding a path forward, dropping a box into a river to provide a stepping stone across a gap, climbing a ladder, braving a prolonged dip in a toxic pool. Your mission is to search for missing plants. Once you've found them you can take them back to the Doomsday Vault itself and grow them. This is the part of the game I have merely tinkered with. I have grown a few things and felt pretty good about it, but I don't really know where it's all leading.

Out there in the apocalypse, though, Doomsday Vault is admirably direct. You move across the landscape picking up fertiliser, topping up your energy and solving simple puzzles as you look for the plants you're after. The music drives you forward - insistent and perhaps slightly addled - but so does the stoical blankness of your little person on the screen. A space suit? A robot? Something else?

The sense for now is of being well taken care of while also not knowing what lies ahead. It's an enviable position to be in twenty or thirty minutes into a game. Doomsday Vault's fiction gives it a sense of weight and consequence - but also a welcome mystery.

SINGAPORE - Things are heating up in Sembawang once again, with the reopening of Singapore's only hot spring.

The Sembawang Hot Spring Park reopened on Saturday (Jan 4) after a $4.3 million redevelopment, expanding from its original 0.1 hectare to 1.1 hectare now.

The park, which was closed in Aug 2018 for the development works, now features a new cascading pool and a water collection point, with enhanced accessibility for wheelchair users.

There are also educational panels for visitors to learn more about the history and geology of the hot spring park, which is accessible along Gambas Avenue.

Ms Kartini Omar, group director of parks development at the National Parks Board (NParks), said that in designing the park, "NParks incorporated feedback and suggestions from the community from a public consultation in end-2017".

Among the suggestions were having a food and beverage outlet, an activity lawn and toilets, and ensuring the park remains "rustic and natural", said Ms Kartini.

At the launch, Sembawang GRC MPs Khaw Boon Wan, Ong Ye Kung, Amrin Amin and Lim Wee Kiak, with Nee Soon GRC MPs Lee Bee Wah and Faishal Ibrahim, planted Island Lychee and Hairless Rambutan trees to mark the occasion in front of over 450 residents.

The new features of the park, such as the cascading pool at the heart of the park, aim to bring the geothermally heated groundwater closer to visitors.

The cascading pool sees the water cool naturally as it flows down four tiers of pools, with visitors able to dip in.

The park is also more inclusive, with wheelchair-friendly ramps and a specially designed tap at the main water collection point for the disabled.

NParks said in a media release that plants have been planted in the park to recreate kampung life, including fruit trees and edible plants commonly found in kampungs, and flowers commonly seen in the 1960s and 1990s.

Mr Khaw, who is Transport Minister and Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure, shared in a Facebook post on Saturday that he had contributed several rose apple seeds which he brought from Penang three years ago to the park.

There are also unpaved paths and naturalised streams flowing from the hot spring, to mimic the freshwater swamp forest landscape.

Mr Rakunathan Narayanan, 60, who has lived in Yishun for over 30 years, is glad that the rustic nature of the location is being preserved.

They should have done this long ago. You wont find this anywhere else in Singapore, said the security officer.

He has fond memories of cycling to the hot spring from about 30 years ago, when the area was still a kampung.

Jalan Mata Ayer resident Matthew Tan, 46, who works in the paint industry, said the different temperatures in each level of the cascade pool is a cool concept.

The hot spring was first discovered in 1908. During the Japanese Occupation from 1942 to 1944, the Japanese built thermal baths around the spring, and the site became recreational grounds for their officers.

In 1985, the Singapore government acquired the land for military use, with plans to expand Sembawang Air Base and cover the hot spring. Appeals by the local community saw the creation of a small concrete base with standpipes to channel the hot water in 2002.

The Sembawang Hot Spring Park is open from 7am to 7pm daily, and visitors can enter for free.

Mr Ong, who is Minister for Education,said he was grateful to the Ministry of Defence for carving out a part of Chong Pang Camp to be developed into a park, and thanked NParks for sharing and fulfiling the unique vision of having Singapores one and only hot spring park.

He added that the hot spring park is part of the wider development of Sembawang.

There is a lot of development going on - a new MRT station, we are building Bukit Canberra community hub, we are seeing new BTO (build-to-order) projects, viaducts, he said.

What we want to ensure is as we develop, dont forget to sayang Sembawang. It is a place with history, with nature, with its own character. Its through projects like this that we bring out the unique character of Sembawang.

Dr Lim Wee Kiak, who had suggested in Parliament in 2016 that the area be developed into a national hot spring park, said he was glad that the government took up the idea and developed it even better.

He said some residents have shared with him about the hot spring waters supposed medicinal properties, using the water when they have skin problems.
