I suppose I shouldve known better. But one morning, back in July, my daughter and I walked the short walk to our old house in rural Ireland. I was quietly hoping she may have been a little intrigued about our destination.
Of course my old stomping ground was always going to be a bit of a step down from London, where weve just done the tourist things and spent the best part of a day wandering around transfixed at the Harry Potter wonder world at Watford. It hardly needed to be said that the village of Finea in Co Westmeath falls a little short compared to the majesty of Tower Bridge.
We are here in farming country with only scant signs of human activity. There is the unmistakable enduring smell of slurry being spread somewhere. Ive been surprised to see the honeysuckle with its distinct scent, still there, still thriving on the side of the road, near Fagans gate. There are also elderberry, blackthorn, and ash and sycamore saplings, but regular hedge slashings have put paid to their upward trajectories. The only traffic, large lorries from Plunketts quarry, have us standing well back in the ditch as they trundle past weighed down with their loads of ready-mix concrete, sand and blocks.
I wasnt sure what to expect. The smell of a turf fire? A discarded soccer ball or frisbee in the front yard? Maybe a neat stack of split firewood. Perhaps even an inquisitive collie or a cat stretched out on a windowsill basking in the sunshine. Or, maybe I was simply chasing ghosts. Id find out soon enough.
On we go, past Mastersons and Dermodys. I glance up at Maol hill where my brothers beasts are dotted like tiny Lego pieces in the top field, just below the remnant of the hazel copse. Wed head up there the following day. Around the bend and we are almost there, on the home straight. This section of road used to be the final hundred yards or so of our daily mile-long straggle home from school. Sometimes wed summon enough energy to sprint the last 20 yards or so anxious to get inside and retrieve our dinner from the bottom drawer of the range. For a few moments, I imagine I could almost be going home, one more time, only, of course, Im not.
Originally a thatched cottage, the upper floor was added at a later stage, about a 100 years ago, which housed our family of 12. Its windowless grey gable is more weathered, more mundane than I remember. Inside, the three bedrooms upstairsand the 14-step stairway linking them to the downstairs kitchen and parlour. Those bedrooms with their rattling sash windows and wafer-thin glass were nigh impossible to heat. Jackdaws casually commandeered the two inactive chimneys at either end of the roof every spring. Keeping the kitchen warm in winter was a perennial challenge for our old Stanley No 8 that my mother was forever force-feeding with turf and wood. But for all that, it was our homefor 30 years and I knew no different, and Im still not sure Id ever want to change any of it.
For years, the old man, a cautious man, had talked and talked about building a bungalow - for so long it seemed that wed simply shrugged and dismissed his talk as mere wishful thinking. It became our running joke and we were happy to indulge his flight of fancy. But his dream finally became a reality in his final few decades, long after most of us had gone, after he reluctantly sold a few acres, and they moved the few hundred metres to where they had a view of the spire of the church in Granard. They too had joined the world of ubiquitous modern-day bungalow dwellers, scourge or blight, some would argue, of contemporary Irish landscape. But it was their very own bungalow with its double-glazed windows, central heating and pebble-dashed exterior walls and clever-shaped chimney crowns that thwarted even the most determined jackdaw. It was a house that could hold its own with any other dwelling in the locality and our parents were inordinately proud.
As we drew closer that morning, it was obvious no one was at home. Id been told the house was up for sale. The curtains were not drawn. There was no sign of a car or even a bicycle, and the chimney was giving off no smoke. But at least the ancient fuchsia on the embankment was still going strong. Down the roughly quarried well-worn stone steps, we cantered, boldly, as if we still had some claim on this place and into the front yard that was now covered with crushed white rock like the stuff that decorates some of the plots in the local graveyard. Everywhere was spick and span. The interior had been totally transformed. Schmick, to use an Australian adjective, is the description that came to my mind. Devoid of any clutter and now just a single open plan space, it seemed inconceivable that this was the same space where wed been reared cheek by jowl.
Even the outhouse had been refitted with a shiny new slate roof, and a new door, painted a blood red. This shed, which also doubled as the old mans workshop, used to be a repository for all manner of things; fishing rods, bicycles and in winters, an ideal place to hang pheasants and ducks bagged on Sunday afternoons during the shooting season. The ancient looking wheelbarrow sprouting clumps of red geraniums looked contrived, incongruous. And perhaps because of all these faux additions, the place had taken on the unmistakable feel of a weekender or a bolthole that was devoid of any emotion or character.
Year after year, in all kinds of weather, and especially when the back field was too soggy, my brothers and I seized every available opportunity to kick a ball around in this yard, honing what we imagined were our putative soccer skills, as if we might be the next Frank Stapleton or Kenny Dalglish; while our mother fretted that at any given moment an errant ball could well come smashing through the kitchen window. Occasionally, we came close, but the modest size of the window meant it always escaped unscathed.
The sense of quiet that morning was unnerving. Ghosts of my crowded childhood were barely below the surface. We should go now, I had told my daughter, and I was surprised by my impatience. There is nothing to see here, its changed too much, I added, as if to explain my need to get going. She shrugged, indifferent, offering no protest and we turned and headed towards the stone steps, and before I knew it, we were away back down the road, where the superior pebble-dashed bungalow and its well-tended lawn, and its view of the church spire, and our hire car awaited.

Atlanta-based Acuity Brands, Inc. recently announced its partnership with CIRCADIAN ZircLight, Inc., Stoneham, Mass. The business partnership includes a licensing of CIRCADIAN ZircLight intellectual property and a collaboration intended to accelerate commercialization within North America of CIRCADIANs Zirc-branded technology through Acuity Brands portfolio of indoor luminaires.
Over the past five years, CIRCADIAN ZircLight has created evidence-based specifications for workplace lighting and developed LED chips, light engines, control systems, and luminaires to address the need for circadian lighting.
Circadian lighting supports the natural circadian rhythms of human beings, Earlywine adds. Our bodies are tuned to respond to the key circadian signal in natural light, which is blue-rich during the day and depleted of blue after sunset. He adds that CIRCADIAN ZircLights technology address this need in current lighting technology, which was largely designed without circadian considerations in mind.
Extensive research over the past fifteen years has shown that the spectrum, intensity, and timing of light exposure can impact human health and well-being by either maintaining or disrupting circadian rhythms, explains Dr. Martin Moore-Ede, CEO of CIRCADIAN ZircLight. For example, not having enough daytime exposure to blue-rich light may impact ones alertness and productivity. On the other hand, exposure to blue-rich light at night, whether through electronics (TV, mobile phones) or through lighting, can disrupt melatonin production and impact ones sleep quality.
This partnership reinforces both companies commitment to lighting designed for human productivity, health, and alertness.

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) The Annual Governors Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony returns this Monday, but will be held in a different location.
The public is invited to the Christmas event, which will be at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 9.
The grand Christmas tree is usually lit at the State Capitol, but due to construction at the capitol, this years event will be held at the Oklahoma History Center, according to an Oklahoma Governors Office news release.
Students from 25 public schools across Oklahoma will design ornaments and decorate indoor, four-foot-tall Christmas trees with a theme of their choice prior to the lighting ceremony. Those trees will be displayed inside the History Center after the 5:30 p.m. public tree lighting.
Sarah and I look forward to celebrating the Christmas season with Oklahoma students and families on Monday, Governor Kevin Stitt said. This is an unique opportunity for us to come together as a state and commemorate a holiday season that promotes hope and peace for all.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister said the tree lighting is her favorite event of the year.
It is always a pleasure to see the creativity and excitement of our students and teachers, and the lighting of the tree is an excellent reminder of the joys of the season and the importance of family and community, Hofmeister said.

Atherton's water tower was lit up in lieu of a holiday tree at Holbrook-Palmer Park on Dec. 5. Photo by Magali Gauthier/The Almanac.
Atherton's Dec. 5 "tree lighting" ceremony was unique not only because the town hadn't hosted such an event before, but also because there was no tree to light up. But that didn't stop about 40 residents from gathering in Holbrook-Palmer Park for the town's holiday celebration.
In lieu of an actual tree, town officials illuminated the park's water tower after opening remarks from Mayor Bill Widmer and a countdown.
Students in the Menlo-Atherton High School choir, led by Director Patrick Maier, performed seasonal songs such as "Silent Night" and "Jingle Bells."
Following the ceremony, people headed to the park's indoor Pavilion for hot chocolate, cookies, holiday arts and crafts projects and photos with Santa Claus.
The Atherton Library used a 3D printer to create ornaments in the shapes of trees, snowflakes and other items, all made out of cornstarch. The library also handed out free books.
Children also decorated wooden ornaments and adorned gingerbread houses with frosting and sprinkles.

The circadian rhythm our biological internal clock that regulates the sleep-wake cycleand resets every 24 hours plays a major role in health. How exactly our bodies are able to synchronize with day-night cycles has been a matter of debate. Now, a new study discovered that human eyes have three types of specialized cells that sense light with important applications in preventing circadian rhythm disruptions.
Researchers at the Salk Institute developed a new method that can keep retina samples healthy and functional well after a donor passed away. Such samples were placed on an electrode grid that allowed the researchers to study how the retina reacted to light.
Several colors of light were tested, which showed that a small group of cells in the retina known as intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) started firing about 30 seconds after they interacted with a pulse of light. After the light was turned off, the cells took several seconds to stop firing.
The cells were the most sensitive to blue light, which is the type of light used in LCD screens employed by most smartphones and laptops. Blue light alsoinhibits the production of melatonin, keeping us awake and messing with our natural sleep cycles.
Follow-up experiments revealed that there are, in fact, three types of ipRGCs.
These cells may explain some very peculiar findings reported by other studies. For instance, blind people are able to align their sleep-wake cycles and circadian rhythms to the day-night cycle despite not being able to see. The new study may explain how they were able to sense light despite their visual impairment.
We have become mostly an indoor species, and we are removed from the natural cycle of daylight during the day and near-complete darkness at night, said Satchidananda Panda, senior author of the study and a professor at the Salk Institute.
Understanding how ipRGCs respond to the quality, quantity, duration, and sequence of light will help us design better lighting for neonatal ICUs, ICUs, childcare centers, schools, factories, offices, hospitals, retirement homes and even the space station, he added.
Although ipRGCs are responsible for sending light signals to the brain, they also work closely with rods and cones. The researchers believe that the ipRGCs may combine their light sensitivity with the light detected by purely visual cells to enhance brightness and add contrast.
This adds another dimension to designing better televisions, computer monitors and smartphone screens in which changing the proportion of blue light can trick the brain into seeing an image as bright or dim, says Panda.
In the future, the researchers plan on conducting more experiments on ipRGCs under different conditions of light color, intensity, and duration. The authors are also interested in how the cells will react to sequences of light (blue that turns into orange or vice-versa, for instance).
By understanding how each specialized light cells function in the eye, the researchers claim that is possible to access an entirely new spectrum of applications. For example, the insights could be used to design indoor lights that offer better day-night synchronization or which why not improve our moods.
Its also going to open a number of avenues to try new drugs or work on particular diseases that are specific to humans, says Ludovic Mure, a postdoctoral researcher in the Panda lab and first author of the new study.
The findings were reported in the journal Science.

Richmond, Va. Shawn Stiffler only wears a suit about once or twice a year. Thursday qualified.
Stiffler, the VCU baseball coach took off his suit coat long enough to toss a ceremonial first pitch in his programs new indoor practice facility.
Having everything under one roof from a locker room, to a training facility to a performance center all within feet of each other makes day to day life more efficient Stiffler said.
The facility was built into the bottom of the Bowe Street parking deck adjacent to the Siegel Center. At a cost of $1.9 million, it includes pitching and hitting areas, a rehab facility and a state of the art locker room. The team will still play their home games at the Diamond and do some of their workouts there, but for a good deal of their year round training, they can now stay right on campus.
Its going to help us be around our players more said Stiffler who will be entering his 8th season as head coach of the Rams. Its going to build more relationships and to let us develop them as people and young men.
When the Rams are not using the facilities at the Diamond, they have been hitting and throwing in an auxiliary facility inside the schools Franklin Street Gym, a place clearly not designed for baseball.
Its like a new house Stiffler continued. We have to break it in now. Great lighting and the newest technology. We can manipulate the batting cages for whatever drill were running. Its a game changer.
VCU and the Flying Squirrels also announced that they will be hosting the 2020 Atlantic 10 baseball tournament at the Diamond next May, the first time this championship has come to RVA.
I think this is a big deal for the whole community said Todd Parney Parnell, the COO of the Flying Squirrels. To have all these teams from across the East Coast come to our city, playing in our ballpark, its a real honor.
Parnell thanked Eastern League President Joe McEacharn for working with the Squirrels and VCU on the leagues schedule for next year to be able to allow The Diamond to host the tournament while the Squirrels are on the road.
They dont know how Parney does it Stiffler said of the A-10 coaches and teams that will be experiencing the Diamond during a championship for the first time. Theyre going to offer an unbelievable experience for these kids. To come in and experience this facility and the way the Flying Squirrels do it.
Next years A-10 baseball tournament will be held May 20-23rd.
