It's turning out to be one of the worst years ever for auto workers across the globe amid shrinking demand and a tectonic shift in vehicle technology, with Daimler AG and Audi announcing almost 20,000 job cuts in just the past week.
All told, carmakers are eliminating more than 80,000 jobs during the coming years, according to data compiled by Bloomberg News. Although the cuts are concentrated in Germany, the U.S. and the U.K., faster-growing economies haven't been immune and are seeing automakers scale back operations there.
The German companies joined General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. in massive retrenchments put in motion over the past year. The industry is sputtering as trade tensions and tariffs raise costs and stifle investment, and as manufacturers reassess their workforce in an era of electrification, autonomous driving and ride-on-demand services.
The global auto industry will produce 88.8 million cars and light trucks this year, an almost 6% drop from a year ago, according to researcher IHS Markit. German auto-industry lobby VDA on Wednesday, Dec. 4, predicted that the decline will continue next year, forecasting global deliveries of 78.9 million vehicles, the lowest level since 2015.
The pace of job cuts in the home of Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and BMW is expected to be "more pronounced in 2020," VDA president Bernhard Mattes said at a press conference in Berlin, adding that the technology shift alone could lead to the loss of 70,000 jobs over the next decade.
"A fundamental structural change with enormously high investments at a time of deteriorating market dynamics. The tension is being felt at many companies," said Mattes.
Cuts are also being carried out in China, which employs the largest number of people in the industry and has been mired in a sales slump. Electric-vehicle startup NIO Inc., which has lost billions of dollars and watched its New York-listed shares plummet, dismissed about 20% of its workforce by the end of September, shedding more than 2,000 jobs.
"The persistent slowdown in global markets will continue to dent automakers' margins and earnings, which have already been hurt by increased R&D spending for autonomous-driving technology," said Gillian Davis, an analyst with Bloomberg Intelligence. "Many automakers are now focused on cost-saving plans to prevent margin erosion."
Being an early leader in electrification hasn't spared Nissan, which has been in turmoil since the arrest of former Chairman Carlos Ghosn a year ago.
With profits plumbing decade lows, the Japanese automaker is shedding 12,500 positions in the coming years, mostly at factories across the globe, to reduce costs as it rushes to refresh an aging model lineup. A redesigned version of the battery-powered Leaf, which debuted later than planned because of the loss of the company's longtime leader, isn't giving the company much of a boost this year.
Factory-floor workers have been rising up against the retrenching. GM's more than 46,000 U.S. hourly workers staged a 40-day-long strike this fall the longest against the company in almost half a century but managed to coax the company into keeping open only one of the four American factories it made plans to shutter a year ago.
On Nov. 22, about 15,000 people marched in the streets to protest job cuts and factory closures in Stuttgart, the German city that's home to the global headquarters of Daimler, Porsche and major parts supplier Robert Bosch GmbH.
Protesters in the historic downtown square of Schlossplatz wore red scarfs, blew whistles and waved red flags in support of Germany's powerful labor union IG Metall, which organized the demonstrations. Top union officials who represent workers at Mercedes-Benz, Audi and many parts makers claim the companies are using the shift toward EVs as an excuse to push through deeper cuts and boost profits.
"We don't let our jobs be taken away just because some managers haven't done their homework," Roman Zitzelsberger, the regional head of IG Metall in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg and the worker representative on Daimler's supervisory board, told the crowd.
The job concerns proved to be justified. Audi announced a week later it will eliminate as many as 9,500 positions in Germany through 2025 as parent Volkswagen AG prepares for a costly transition to electric vehicles. Daimler announced plans to shed more than 10,000 worldwide.
If it were a country, the auto industry would be the world's sixth-largest economy, according to Fircroft, a technical job-placement firm. In Germany alone, when including local operations of foreign manufacturers, about 150,000 jobs might be at risk in coming years, according to estimates by the Center of Automotive Management, near Cologne.
The clouds started to form for U.S. carmakers last year, when Ford revealed plans for a years-long, $11 billion restructuring. The company has made a series of piecemeal announcements since then, slashing roughly 10% of its global salaried ranks and shutting six plants: three in Russia and one apiece in the U.S., U.K. and France. Of roughly 17,000 jobs Ford is eliminating, 12,000 will be in Europe.
The state of car-factory jobs in the U.S. is less clear, mainly thanks to the new contracts Detroit-area automakers have been negotiating for the next four years.
The prospects looked somewhat bleak for the United Auto Workers union when talks began this summer. With vehicle demand slowing, production shifts were being pared back across the country by Nissan at its truck-and-van plant in Mississippi, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV at its Jeep Cherokee SUV factory in Illinois and Honda at an Ohio plant that mostly makes Accord sedans. Workers fear plug-in cars, which have fewer parts and require less labor to build, will doom auto jobs.
In the end, the UAW has announced commitments by GM, Ford and Fiat Chrysler to invest almost $23 billion in U.S. facilities over the course of the next four years, and to add or retain more than 25,000 jobs. While that sounds like a lot, it remains to be seen whether the spending will actually boost production. It costs the companies billions to convert or retool existing factories for them to make new cars and powertrains.
The union also didn't emerge without some bruising losses, with the most notably being its lost battle to save GM's spacious car plant in Lordstown, Ohio. The factory, opened in 1966, became a political football when the company announced production of Chevrolet Cruze sedans would end in March. President Donald Trump told supporters a year and a half earlier not to sell their homes, assuring them his administration would bring jobs back. GM sold the complex to cash-strapped electric-truck startup Lordstown Motors Corp. last month.
For Scott Brubaker, GM's offloading of the Lordstown plant could be a one-way ticket out of the auto industry. The automaker transferred him to its Corvette sports-car plant in Bowling Green, Ky., which meant leaving an Ohio farm his family has owned for four generations.
The idling of the factory left him with two options: live in his camper trailer in Bowling Green and commute home on weekends, or take a $75,000 severance check from GM and find a new job near Lordstown. He has an offer to work for a company clearing land for developers, but it pays $5 an hour less than GM, and he says it would cost him his pension. Lordstown Motors is still raising money for its electric trucks, and Brubaker has his doubts it will succeed.
"I went to GM for good pay and benefits," Brubaker said. "What we did in the plant we did successfully, and GM still pawned us off."

This series includes interviews with the late Stephen Kappells best friend, sisters and the Oshkosh Police Department. The case files and evidence were unable to be located or were destroyed by authorities. Numerous news articles as well as autopsy and crime lab reports were examined to gather information.
On an afternoon more than 56 years ago, the body of an 18-year-old UW Oshkosh college freshman was found floating in Lake Winnebago at Menominee Park.
The man was found nude and beaten, with his hands and knees bound and a 30-pound rock attached to his feet. A coroners inquest could not determine whether the man had died by suicide or homicide.
Over half a century later, the victims family still hasnt received any answers to who or what caused the violent death of Stephen Kappell.
No open casesMartha Kemp said she never stopped hoping her brother would find justice, but her family didnt talk about Stephens death.
Photo: Bethanie Gengler / The Advance-Titan
We were such a normal family and then to come into something like this, it changed. We just werent the same family, Kemp said. Did we still find laughter? Eventually. But it changed.
Mary Jo Suppala said her parents endured a horrendous experience at Stephens coroners inquest.
It took a tremendous toll on them, how they tried to make it seem like a suicide, Suppala said. Given the evidence, it was hard to take.
Suppala said her mother didnt want to pursue anything after that.
That was enough. She didnt want to go through anything else. She didnt want to bring it up in the public, Suppala said. She couldnt live through that again.
Kemp said the family didnt discuss Stephens death out of respect for their mother.
One time she said, If I ever start [crying], Ill never be able to stop, Kemp said.
Their father, Clifford, died in 1981 and their mother, Eunice, died in 2012. Theyre buried next to Stephen at St. Marys Cemetery in Kaukauna.
After the death of both of her parents, Kemp reached out to the Oshkosh Police Department to inquire about Stephens case. What she learned was disturbing.
They said they didnt have any open cases, Kemp said. The evidence is nowhere to be found. Nobody knew about this case.
Oshkosh Police Public Information Officer Kate Mann said evidence was destroyed in early 1969 at the request of District Attorney Thomas Fink despite the inquest jurors request that the case remain open and continue to be investigated.
Theres nothing showing that they continued the investigation, Kemp said. She said she hopes evidence and case files are handled differently in Oshkosh today than they were 56 years ago.
Im hoping that this was 1965 and that none of this stuff will ever happen again, she said.
Mann said evidence preservation requirements have changed over time.
This investigation began over 50 years ago and during that time frame, records and case files were stored in a different manner than they are today, she said.
Stephens best friend, Timothy St. Aubin, said destroying records only four years after Stephens death is unacceptable.
Why would you completely dispose of all the information that the City of Oshkosh had, all the documentation? St. Aubin questioned. Theres no guarantee that there wasnt some complicity in the Police Department, that they were protecting someone further up in the community. I dont know if its the institution of Oshkosh university or whoever.
In 2015, OPD posted what little information was available in the case to Facebook and requested the publics help.
Mann said they have not received any recent tips or new information in Stephens case.
OPD considers this investigation open and encourages citizens to report any information that they have about this case, she said.
Kemp said Stephens case was not investigated to its full potential.
I cant help but think this is some type of cover-up sweep this under the rug so that we can move on, she said. And then not giving Stephen justice? Thats just as horrific as the death. Its like his death is not worth what it might do to the university or what it might do to the community, like it didnt mean anything.
Courtesy of the Kappell familyThe Kappell family gathers for a meal in the 1960s.
Unanswered questionsWith no remaining evidence, the existing documents and news articles leave many unanswered questions.
Are they getting pressure not to pursue this because it would look bad for the university? Kemp asked. Their enrollment would go down? Is it something related to the football team? Was there some type of scuffle or bullying on the team?
Oshkosh resident Joe Yana grew up near where Stephens body was found and said the discovery caused fear in the community.
Ours was an upscale middle-class neighborhood on that side of town and if something like that happened where a killer is running loose people were a little bit scared about it, he said.
Yana recalls conflicting reports about what could have happened.
Some feared it could be gangs or a revenge killing of some sort, or a suicide staged to look like a murder, he said. Because Stephens body was found 18 days after his disappearance, Yana said residents speculated that maybe someone killed him and hid him in one of the sailboats in Menominee Park before dumping him in the lake.
The Post-Crescent of Appleton, Wisconsin, reported in a 1965 article that Stephens case joined a list of unusual murder cases in Winnebago County at the time, including the unsolved 1963 slaying of 24-year-old Wayne Pratt.
Pratt was a gas station attendant at an Enco between Neenah and Oshkosh whose body was found among tires in the back room of the station. He had been stabbed 53 times in the back. Media reports indicate evidence still remains in the Pratt cold case, but no one has been charged.
Finding closureSuppala said she overheard her parents say the community wanted Stephens death investigation to be over quickly.
They just wanted it to be over so that it wouldnt bring a lot of attention that there was a murder going on at the university, Suppala said.
She said all the possible experiences her family could have shared with Stephen have been taken from them.
All of us miss him tremendously. Would he have gotten married and had kids? I would have liked him to meet my kids, Suppala said. We had a cottage on the lake that was really important to my family and to go up there and have good times with him and his family thats all been taken away.
Kemp doesnt want Stephen to be forgotten.
He matters; he was young, Kemp said. He had his whole life ahead of him and it was taken away.
She said shed like to know what happened to her brother before she dies.
Let us have some peace. Shed some light on this horrific death. I think that Stephen deserves it, she said. She said she hopes that somebody will find it in their heart to share information and that we can have some closure. I think its coming to the point where maybe somebody wants to ease their conscience or find forgiveness.

December 05, 2019 // Franchising.com // ATLANTA - The holiday season, a time for family, fun and festivities, is here. If youre not careful, unwanted hitchhikers - pests - may be celebrating the holidays alongside you and your family. Orkin Pest Control has tips for keeping these pests out.
With the introduction of fresh-cut trees, consistent holiday travel and an overflow of baked goods in the kitchen, aphids, bed bugs and ants are also seeking their way indoors to celebrate the season.
During the holiday season, we access areas that we do not see very often during the rest of the year, such as attics and basements, to bring out decorations, which can introduce pests living there to the rest of the home, said Glen Ramsey, an Orkin entomologist. Some of the food and decorations placed out during holidays can also attract unwanted pests.
What can you do to prevent aphids, bed bugs and ants from ruining your holiday cheer? Awareness and vigilance are key.
Aphids: A Cautionary Tale
Many people choose to celebrate the holidays with live trees, but unfortunately, real Christmas trees may carry pests - such as aphids - indoors.
What is an aphid? It is a soft-bodied insect, about the size of an ant, that uses its piercing, sucking mouthparts to feed on plant sap. Aphids are common on conifers.
While it is unlikely aphids cause any damage to the home or residents, they are a nuisance and may exude a sticky honeydew-like substance, said Ramsey.
Although many will stay on the tree, aphids are known to become active after exposure to warm temperatures indoors. Others are attracted to light sources, including windows. Aphids can reproduce quickly. In fact, a tree could be infested with hundreds or even thousands of the pests. A key sign of infestation includes seeing dead aphids underneath the tree.
Bed Bugs: The Unwanted Holiday Travel Guest
Bed bugs, which are typically 4-5 mm in length and red to dark brown in color, are great hitchhikers and can travel from place to place with ease, including luggage, purses and other belongings.
Bed bugs are not a sign of uncleanliness, said Ramsey. They only need blood to survive and can be found anywhere from single-family homes, apartments and hotels, to public places such movie theaters, public transit, libraries and offices.
With the hustle and bustle of holiday travel, turnover rates increase, along with the likelihood of a bed bug introduction in hotels and homes across the country. Keep this in mind when youre on the road visiting loved ones. Also, think twice before you throw your jacket on a pile of others at a holiday party, as you never know where those jackets have traveled.
Ants: Moving in for the Holidays
Ants often move inside looking for the same things that humans do - favorable temperatures, food, shelter and a permanent place to call home.
Observing swarmers during the cold weather months may indicate that an ant colony exists somewhere inside the home. In this scenario, ants are usually located somewhere in an inner house wall, in door and window frames, or in hidden places.
Furthermore, ants are omnivores and may be attracted to the interior of a home by substances that are edible and provide a good energy source, including the sweet baked goods that frequently accompany the holiday season.
The good news, though, is all these threats are manageable and preventable. To help people avoid the risks associated with ants, aphids and bed bugs, Orkin recommends the following tips:
Using the tips above, homes across the nation can be better equipped to keep pests out this holiday season. To effectively control pest introductions, contact a trained pest professional who can assess your situation, implement a sound solution that is designed specifically for your home and monitor for improvements over time.

Building healthy homes is "really about researching and selecting better products, ones that don't off-gas, that are formaldehyde-free and have low or no VOC content," says Kevin Mullen, president of Calgary-based Empire Homes. Supplied / Postmedia
The concept of living in a healthy and sustainable home is gaining ground, and the demand is upping the ante when it comes to design.
As a society we have become very focused on wellness and fitness, eating organically, wanting to know where our food comes from, but we have never asked any of those questions about our homes and I think that is to our detriment, says Kevin Mullen, president of Calgary-based Empire Homes.
Empire Homes is taking note, and making health a priority, putting the emphasis on homes that are healthy for both the environment and for the people living in them.
It is currently creating a collection of 19 luxurious, healthy homes in the inner-city master-planned community of Currie, developed by Canada Lands Co. All homes will be built to Built Green specifications and also Empires Reside specifications, a comprehensive grouping of initiatives designed to ensure healthy air quality.
The two-storey homes will ring Valour Park and feature contemporary lines with plenty of brick, stone, stucco and concrete, not to mention gorgeous kitchens, compliments of Empire Kitchen & Bath.
Healthy and beautiful go hand in hand, says Mullen, also noting that building a home with healthy materials costs the same.
Its really about researching and selecting better products, ones that dont off-gas, that are formaldehyde-free and have low or no VOC content, he says.
VOC is the acronym used for volatile organic compounds, compounds that can wreak havoc on our health, as we breathe in their fumes. Resins, glues, flooring, carpet, paint, particle board, dry wall, insulation it all off-gases.
We take for granted that the manufacturer and the builder are thinking about this. But often it is not true. What is the first thing that most builders do? Move the homeowner into their new home as quickly as possible, often the day after its been painted and glues and silicones and finishes have been applied. And people wonder why they are getting headaches or their kids cant breathe, he says.
Les Wold, sales and marketing manager at Effect Homes in Edmonton, agrees.
It is so important to be attentive to products, to have hard surfaces and natural floorings, he says.
Wold says that with the uptick in allergies, consumers are coming to them much more informed.
They are wanting a much more holistic approach to home building. They want a well-built, energy efficient home that will stand the test of time and provide a comfortable and healthy place for their families to live, he says.
Effect Homes has won numerous awards for its sustainable home designs, including the Canadian Home Builders Associations (CHBA) Green Home of the year the builder won at both the provincial and national level for a net-zero home in Edmontons Belgravia area. The use of passive design techniques, including window placement and materials chosen for their long-term durability and lack of off-gassing. The home features, for example, polished concrete floors throughout that kept costs comparable.
Effect Homes, a custom home builder and renovatorlike Empire Homes, is passionate about what it does and is walking the talk. It has recently renovated a duplex in need of some TLC in Edmontons up and coming Bonnie Doon community, moving the companys offices into the space.
Our offices really show case what can be done and it gets us so excited, says Wold. Healthy materials and hard surfaces combine with beautiful design and energy efficiency. The offices are off the grid, with solar generating enough power to run the lighting, and computer systems the power is stored on site in batteries.
Homes definitely can be beautiful, energy efficient and healthy, says Wold, highlighting another example, a home in Edmontons Windsor Park area. The home, which looks as if it belongs on the pages of Architectural Digest, is 68 per cent more energy efficient than a standard home, with 27 solar panels on its rooftop generating an 8.25 kilowatt solar electric system.
But it is all about supply and demand, notes Empires Mullen, relating it to consumer demand for organic foods.
As people begin to really demand this, more and more healthy products will be available in the market. When we first starting focusing on healthy homes in 2016, we couldnt source formaldehyde-free products in the local market anywhere, he says. Now they are trickling in. Empire will not build with a product unless it is stamped formaldehyde-free by a third-party inspector.
Wold notes that it is a natural progression for people to want sustainable, energy efficient and healthy homes, both for the environment and for the owner. This really is the way of the future, says Wold.

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The "Rainscreen Cladding Market by Material (Composite Materials, Metal, Fiber Cement, HPL), Construction (New Construction and Renovation), End-Use Sector (Non-residential and Residential), and Region - Global Forecast to 2024" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.
The market for rainscreen cladding systems is projected to be valued at USD 14.3 billion by 2024. The market in the North American region is projected to grow at the second-highest CAGR of 7.5% during the forecast period. However, Asia-Pacific is projected to grow at the highest CAGR of 8.4%.
The rainscreen cladding market comprises major manufacturers such as Kingspan Insulation (UK), SIKA (Switzerland), Rockwool International A/S (Denmark), Everest Industries Limited (Denmark), SFS Group AG (US), Sotech Architectural Faade (UK), Promat UK Ltd (UK).
Increase in the construction (innovation, remodelling, and maintenance) activities are projected to drive the overall growth of the rainscreen cladding market across the globe from 2019 to 2024.
The global rainscreen cladding market has witnessed high growth primarily because of the increasing construction activities worldwide. Rising disposable income of consumers, specifically in developing nations, is another key factor contributing towards the increase in renovation and remodelling activities, which in turn will drive the growth of the rainscreen cladding market over the next few years.
In terms of both, value and volume, the new construction segment is projected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period.
The new construction segment of the rainscreen cladding market is projected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period, in terms of value as well as volume. It is a durable, flexible and waterproof cladding material in the market. It includes an extruded polymer-based core layer which provides a better rigid property to the floor. Its properties such as easy installation and smooth finished appearance after the installation further drives the market for the rainscreen cladding market.
In terms of both, value and volume, the composite material segment is projected to lead the rainscreen cladding market from 2019 to 2024.
Growth of composite material segment in the rainscreen cladding market is primarily attributed to the high strength, increased durability, and design flexibility. It accounted for a market share of 53.4% among all the materials used for rainscreen cladding due to its low cost and easy installation techniques. Composite materials are the most preferred rainscreen cladding material for residential as well as non-residential buildings, owing to their high durability, longer shelf-life of around 30-40 years, and no maintenance. Their easy maintenance & installation features save the additional labor cost involved in it.
In terms of both, value and volume, the non-residential segment is projected to lead the rainscreen cladding market from 2019 to 2024.
The growth of the non-residential segment in the rainscreen cladding market is primarily attributed to the favourable and lenient lending policies initiated by governments across all regions, which is driving the sales of residential construction projects. The non-residential construction spending is estimated to go up, particularly in the emerging Asia Pacific and Latin American regions; there is a trend of urbanization observed in these regions, resulting in a much higher growth rate for the residential construction market, than in developed markets. The increasing need for renovation, remodelling, as well as maintenance, further increase the need for rainscreen cladding in the non-residential segment.
In terms of both, value and volume, the Europe rainscreen cladding market is projected to contribute the maximum market share during the forecast period.
In terms of value, the Europe region is projected to lead the rainscreen cladding market from 2019 to 2024 due to the strong demand from countries such as UK, Germany, France, Russia, and Italy. This demand in these mentioned countries is due to the tremendous growth of the construction opportunities in these countries. The demand is also driven by the increasing number of new housing units and huge investments in the infrastructural sector.
