Sundance Gets Real, With a Lineup of Newsy Films for 2020 – The New York Times

    - December 5, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Oscar winners Julianne Moore and Alicia Vikander are two of the four actresses who play the feminist activist Gloria Steinem at different ages in The Glorias, an unconventional biopic from the director Julia Taymor. The film will be among the 118 feature-length works at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, the programmers announced Wednesday.

Next years iteration of the festival, the top showcase for independent cinema in the United States, will include narrative features and documentaries that tackle subjects recently in the news, including school shootings, the #MeToo movement, immigration and the murder of Jamal Khashoggi.

Sundance chose its lineup from 15,100 submissions, a number that included 3,853 feature-length movies. For the second year in a row, the festival released statistics about the filmmakers who made the accepted works, reporting that 44 percent were directed by one or more women, 34 percent were directed by one or more person of color and 15 percent by members of sexual and gender minority communities.

A lot of our films are of the time, which has been a long time coming, John Cooper, the director of the festival, said. The audience has paved the way for a different kind of indie film: more authentic stories from different cultures and backgrounds.

In other films scheduled to have their premieres at Sundance, Elisabeth Moss portrays the author Shirley Jackson in Shirley, Michael Keaton takes on the role of a lawyer responsible for the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund in Worth and Benedict Cumberbatch plays a businessman involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis, in Ironbark.

The festival will also include a new film starring Anne Hathaway and Ben Affleck, The Last Thing He Wanted, from the director of Mudbound, Dee Rees; Viggo Mortensens directorial debut, Falling, which will be shown on the closing night; and Wendy, a reimagining of J.M. Barries Peter Pan, directed by Benh Zeitlin, whose Beasts of the Southern Wild won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2012.

The festival, which will run from Jan. 23 to Feb. 2 in and around Park City, Utah, was started in 1978 by Robert Redford and has long been a testing ground for new films and talent. The Coen brothers first film, Blood Simple, won the Grand Jury Prize in 1985, and Quentin Tarantinos career took off after Reservoir Dogs made its debut at Sundance in 1992.

It became something of an annual circus in the 1990s, when indie cinema was booming and distributors braved the snow in search of the next unlikely hit, everything from the cult comedy Napoleon Dynamite, directed by Jared Hess, to Precious, an Oscar winner directed by Lee Daniels.

Now the executives tramping through Park City are likely to be looking for content to fill their streaming services. Amazon scored big in 2017 with a film it picked up at the festival, The Big Sick, a comedy co-written by and starring Kumail Nanjiani. It grossed more than $56 million at the box office and is now available on Amazon Prime Video.

Disney Plus, the streaming service unveiled last month by the Walt Disney Company, will have a presence, with Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made. Directed by Tom McCarthy, a filmmaker known for Spotlight, the best picture winner at the 2016 Academy Awards, the film will be included as part of the festivals childrens slate.

Relative newcomers like Apple, Amazon and Netflix have kept Sundance vibrant. Its good news when people get the financial support to make interesting films, Mr. Cooper, the festival director, said. The streaming companies are certainly helping with this sector of the entertainment space.

Films that made an impression at the most recent festival included Lulu Wangs The Farewell, the documentary Apollo 11 and Late Night, a film written by Mindy Kaling and starring Emma Thompson as an imperious talk show host.

Amazon paid $13 million for the domestic distribution rights to Late Night during its last Sundance visit, but it did not repeat the success it had with The Big Sick. Late Night, which received rave reviews at its premiere at the Eccles Center Theater in Park City, generated just $15 million in the United States during its theatrical run, despite a hefty marketing campaign, showing the difficulty of predicting which films will break out.

A contender from the 2020 lineup is Downhill, a remake of the acclaimed Swedish film Force Majeure. It stars Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a married couple rattled in the aftermath of an avalanche that takes place during a ski vacation.

Sundances documentary lineup includes The Dissident, directed by Bryan Fogel, a film that examines the murder of Mr. Khashoggi, a dissident Saudi journalist, and the possible cover-up by the Saudi government. Mr. Fogels previous documentary, Icarus, premiered at Sundance in 2017 and won its special jury award before taking the best documentary Oscar.

Another documentary slated for the festival, Us Kids, directed by Kim A. Snyder, centers on the survivors of the 2018 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. And a still untitled documentary by the filmmakers Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering tells the story of the former hip-hop executive Drew Dixon, who accused the mogul Russell Simmons of raping her. (Mr. Simmons denied the accusations by Ms. Dixon and three other women.)

Other films to keep an eye on include Minari, starring Steven Yeun as a Korean father who moves his family to Arkansas in the 1980s to start a farm. Made by the writer and director Lee Isaac Chung, the movie is a reinvention of the American dream story, said Kim Yutani, Sundances director of programming.

A film with comic potential is Palm Springs, produced by Andy Samberg and his partners in the troupe The Lonely Island, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. It stars Mr. Samberg as a wedding guest who has a strange encounter with the maid of honor, played by Cristin Milioti.

Justin Simien, the director of the 2014 satire Dear White People, returns with Bad Hair, a film scheduled to kick off Sundances Midnight category of edgier fare. Set in 1989, it tracks an ambitious young woman, played by Elle Lorraine of the HBO show Insecure, who gets a weave in order to succeed in the image-obsessed world of music television, only to suspect that the hair may have a mind of its own.

From little ideas, big things grow – Myanmar Times

    - December 5, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

Dont have time to cook? Then just pick up the phone and order a home delivered Kong Pao chicken or Pizza. Cant find a place to manage your work? Just hire a shared office space in the city.

What about work around the home? Dont worry startups can take care of that too.

Many busy professionals dont have enough time to manage their house cleaning, laundry and other homemaking tasks, which is where maids and cleaners come in handy.

Domestic services providers such as MyanAnts, Ayesay Services and Busy Bees have been in the market for the past two years, and have recently started to face more competition as more foreigners come to Myanmar and book their services.

Many service providers offer one type of service, such as for maids or cooks, but a new kind of business has entered the market. As home duties become more varied, some companies offer services that cover a range of different home-related tasks such as moving house, renovations, shopping, as well as the traditional maid-like duties.

Although there is competition in the market, this new kind of business is run by people who have a different idea as to what domestic work really involves, said Jack Phyo Wai Lin, managing director of Ayesay Services.

Ayesay Services is a business that provides about eight kinds of domestic services, including home duties like cooking and cleaning, as well as more manual tasks like decorating and repair work.

I dont know if there will be more competition in the market in the future for all of these services, but it makes sense to have a company that at least offers them all under one roof, said Jack Phyo Wai Lin.

Most businesses focus on their customers without considering the labour-side of things, and the people they employ who perform these services.

We like to find jobs for those at the grassroots level, for competent and good-minded workers. At the same time, we aim to provide solutions for customers, said Ko Aung Paing, CEO and founder of MyanAnts.

MyanAnts provides job opportunities and training services to 40-50 year-old women with low education and few if any qualifications.

Finding domestic labour has also changed over the last decade, with clients making bookings over the internet and through Facebook forums, rather than through agency offices directly.

Some of the companies offer workers who are able to fix things in the house, like plumbers and electrical repairmen. They no longer just provide you with maids do the washing and cleaning the house, said Daw Nu Nu Wai, a frequent customer.

It is like hiring a taxi. If its a taxi thats been endorsed by others, then you feel much safer. When a person has to entrust his/her house to a stranger, people want an accountable service provider, she said.

Available domestic services include full-time and part-time housemaids, cleaners, carpenters, electricians, home decorators, renovators and removalists, among others. Translated

Click Moment | ‘Weak internet signals showed us our strong impact’ – Livemint

    - December 5, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

While transitioning into civilian life after more than a decade in the Indian Air Force, I was struck by how the growing propensity to ask for goods and services to be home delivered was causing disruptions in traditional security processes at gated communities.Security guards were unable to deal with the increased traffic at the gate and the existing processes and technologies were proving inadequate. It became clear that the authentication process needed to be digitized. This was a weak signal, no doubt, but I was convinced that it warranted deeper analysis.

We built a strong solution for these problems, and, in doing so, we were not only able to ensure seamless verification of all visitors, but deliver a number of other conveniences to residents. We could help them manage their deliveries when they were away, inform them of the arrival of their maid, enhance the security of their children, notify guards if delivery executives overstayed their welcome, among much else. A business is always looking for ways to quantify the utility of its solution. You want to know that it is a painkiller (need to have), and not just a vitamin (good to have). It is difficult to be certain.

Then, for the second time in three years, rains hit Chennai in November 2017. Connectivity dropped all across Bengaluru, which receives internet from cables laid under the port city. Our services were hit. Gate notifications werent reaching our customers and there was nothing we could do about it. Every one of us had to drop what we were doing and answer the phone. Within eight hours, around 40% of our customer base had contacted us to complain. We were delighted! A day or two later, internet speeds went back to normal and we went back to work, buoyed by the knowledge that what we were building really was a painkiller. Fast forward two years and MyGate has seen phenomenal growth. Our security solution is now in 1.2 million homes across 5,000 gated premises in 11 Indian cities. Ironically, the strongest indicator of our impact was a weak (internet) signal.

There was one moment when fate turned their way, a moment that they can look back upon and say, that was when it started. Capturing click moments.

Having your car repossessed is not in same universe with Nazi genocide

How dare Frank Mina equate his own financial irresponsibility with the plight of Jews in Nazi Germany!I'm sure the more than 1million murdered children would disagree that not paying your bills is the same as being torn from their mothers and incinerated.

    Adam Dobrin, Port St. Lucie

In a March 3, 2016, letter to Florida East Coast Railway, Karl Alexy of the FederalRailroadAdministration said Liquefied Natural Gas offers a new opportunity for railroads, presents a new challenge for safety regulators, and transporting large quantities in a single train presents unique safety risks. He also noted that LNG freight would eventually share the routes with high-performance passenger trains, traveling at speeds up to 110 mph.

Top speed for LNG is 40 mph through densely populated communities.

The Florida East Coast railroad bridge is seen spanning the St. Lucie River, parallel to the Roosevelt Bridge, on Wednesday, Oct 30, 2019, in Stuart. Virgin Trains USA has announced their intentions to replace the aging bridge, a single track span, with a double-track span costing around $100 million and taking around two years to build.(Photo: ERIC HASERT/TCPALM)

New Fortress Energys Miami affiliate, American LNG Marketing, is authorized by the Department of Energy to export LNG from the Ports of Miami, Everglades, Palm Beach, Jacksonville and Canaveral. American began exporting LNG in 2016.

On March 13, 2017, the FRA authorized Florida East Coast Railway to haul 10,000-gallon ISO containers of LNG produced at the Miami plant to ports of Miami and Everglades. Energy Transport Solutions, also a subsidiary of NFE, is now seeking authorization to transport LNG in 30,000-gallon rail tank cars.

The Floridian Natural Gas Storage LNG facility, proposed for Indiantown, plans an addition for loading rail cars. Floridian will export LNG from ports of Miami, Palm Beach, Jacksonville, Tampa, Everglades, Canaveral and Manatee (from Department of Energy Docket No. 15-38-LNG).

Unlike LPG (liquified petroleum gas), a breach in an LNG container cannot be capped, and exposure to thermal radiation (heat) from an LNG pool fire or flash fire could result in fatalities, serious injuriesand property damage. Transporting LNG by rail over deteriorating infrastructure, including bridges, such asthe St. Lucie River railroad bridge, increases the risk.

Rail tank cars will form a virtual rolling natural gas pipeline on wheels, but taxpayer monies and costly rail infrastructure improvements will be required before any gas starts flowing.

    Cecile Scofield, Palm City

A recent letter by a live-aboard boater questioned the citys effort to enforce regulations to prevent sewage discharge from boats as small potatoes. It was good to see a knowledgeable and law-abiding boater speak up. She is correct that there are many other sources of the nitrogen and phosphorus polluting the lagoon. It is a case of death by a thousand cuts.

The lagoon has been on a downward slide since the 1950s, when population began exploding in Florida. A clear lagoon with a white, sandy bottom, healthy seagrass beds and abundant marine life is a vivid memory for very few current Floridians. We, the people, have severely changed the land by digging canals, paving green space, fertilizing lawns and using septic systems that can leak and flush waste into the ground.

Cities and counties along the lagoon are spending millions of dollars to convert septic systems to municipal sewer, upgrade sewage treatment facilities and build stormwater parks that clean canal water before it enters the lagoon. We also need individuals to reduce fertilizer use, pick up their pet waste and connect to sewer when it is available.

The good news is that we know what the problems are and we can fix them! And one of the problems is that some boaters discharge their raw sewage directly into the lagoon.Enforcing the local, state and federal regulations that were written under the Clean Water Act is an important part of cleaning up the Indian River Lagoon.

Fortunately for Vero Beach, plans are being implemented to enforce the no discharge rule, thanks to efforts by the city manager, Vero Beach Marina, the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Clean Water Coalition.

Judy Orcutt, Indian River Shores, is vice president of the Clean Water Coalition of Indian River County.

Regardless of the battle taking placebetween the two political parties in the basement and halls of Congress, the decreasing level of sanity of Adam Schiff has to be apparent to everybody watching the proceedings.

His apparent hatred of the GOP is understandable, but his rambling, his lies, his unstable behavior and his paranoia are scary. What he is saying and doing is way beyond the realm of sanity. I am not being facetious, but I am talking as a registered nurse who has worked in many fields, even psychiatry.

Schiff is the one person on this committee who is dangerous to Americaandall its traditions and freedoms. He is heading a group that holds the country in its hands. I am sure that all meetings he and his liberal group attend each day are continually escalating in its level of vitriol and hate.

I understand political differences, but never in my 84 years have I seen such hatred, lying and paranoia as that expressed by these liberals. There is absolutely no fairness, no sense of really caring for America and its people on the part of the Democratic leaders. Whatever respect I held all these years for the two-party system in America has been totally wiped out.

This inquiry literally turns my stomach.

Marketing Architects Attracts More Senior Talent, Hires a Pair Boasting Impressive Agency Stripes as Company Continues to Challenge the Industry Model…

    - December 5, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Marketing Architects, an independent TV advertising agency, has welcomed two more troublemakers to its team of category disruptors: Catrina McAuliffe as Senior Vice President of Brand Strategy and Paul Schmidt as Vice President of Client Growth.

Having spent a combined five-plus decades at traditional agencies, the duo brings inside-outside insights and observations about strategic planning, the client service model and creative ways to move brands forward. They bring more how-to and how-not-to-do knowledge to Marketing Architects as the company continues to question the traditional approach.

CEO Chuck Hengel touts his companys healthy restlessness and notes that stagnant thinking, complacent approach and self-serving routines just dont find acceptance and comfort inside the walls of Marketing Architects.

We are constantly re-imagining things and challenging both trends and the status quo; its our responsibility to our clients, he said. The role of an agency partner is changing and the traditional model is broken. Talented people are looking to refresh the industry and we are happy to empower that advancement and doing so by investing more in our staffing and resources, including technology.

Hengel noted he doesnt even like Marketing Architects being called an agency, because it misrepresents how the company thinks and does.

We should really refer to ourselves as formally known as an agency, he quipped. We are on to new chapters in the industry, and are continuing to evolve our models, systems and client plans.

As an example, Marketing Architects sets itself apart by investing its own capital into the creation and production of each TV campaign and, as a result, challenges the high costs and low accountability of traditional agencies to drive rapid growth and solve complex business challenges for clients.

This approach along with Marketing Architects passion for results, openness for innovation and desire to find a better way especially spoke to the newest hires, who have seen it all in the agency world. McAuliffe previously worked at Carmichael Lynch, Ogilvy & Mather and TBWAChiatDay, and served as Senior Vice President and Group Strategy Director at Energy BBDO. She has an extensive history of establishing account planning within agencies and is looking to develop these disciplines within Marketing Architects.

I was excited about the idea of setting up brand planning in a non-traditional way to fit within Marketing Architects disruptive approach to TV advertising, McAuliffe said. With short timelines and a differentiated business model, there is an opportunity to use technology more effectively to speed up the brand planning process while still ensuring we are building strong creative foundations for brands in the long-term, driving short-term results and helping our clients reach major milestones.

Paul Schmidt comes to Marketing Architects from BBDO Minneapolis, where he led the account management team as Managing Director. Schmidts clients included Hormel Foods, 3M, Andersen Windows and YouthLink. Hes also spent time at SVEDKA, Fallon and EURO RSCG.

Im excited to be able to leverage Marketing Architects model and tools to make television media available to brands that havent been able to include or fully leverage this powerful growth driver in their plans, Schmidt said. The model of Marketing Architects investing in creative production and analytics solves so many challenges that Ive seen through the years, and it adds tons of value to the agency/client relationship that has been missing at some traditional agencies.

The two hires are part of a long list of new leadership Marketing Architects has brought in-house over the last few months to expand its capabilities.

We believe the best is yet to come in our industry, but its important to think differently and always re-evaluate, Hengel said. Were investing in those who want to do things differently and challenge the norm. We are always looking for better, and we think that sets us apart.

Marketing Architects is now accepting positions for: Account Director of Client Growth, Director of Business Development, Marketing Analyst, Media Buyer and Media Intern.

About Marketing ArchitectsMarketing Architects, based in Minneapolis, has a 22-year history of helping companies reach major milestones through advertising. By investing their own capital into each TV campaign, Marketing Architects challenges the high costs and low accountability of traditional agencies to drive rapid growth and solve complex business challenges for clients. David Godshall of Terremoto Landscape on Working with Architects

The Midnight Charette is an explicit podcast about design, architecture, and the everyday. Hosted by architectural designers David Lee and Marina Bourderonnet, it features a variety of creative professionals in unscripted conversations that allow for thoughtful takes and personal discussions. A wide array of subjects are covered with honesty and humor: some episodes provide useful tips for designers, while others are project reviews, interviews, or explorations of everyday life and design. The Midnight Charette is also available on iTunes, Spotify, and YouTube.

This week David and Marina are joined by David Godshall, Landscape Architect and Co-Founder of Terremoto Landscape to discuss the design and philosophy of landscape architecture, working with architects, running an office, when native plants should and should not be used, reviews of recent landscape architecture projects, the differences between landscape architecture and architecture, and more!

    HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS

Starting an office in two different cities (Los Angeles and San Francisco) and Davids journey into Landscape Architecture. (00:50) (26:13)

The differences between architecture and landscape architecture in education, theory, and design approach (10:56)

Working on residential, hospitality, and commercial projects and balancing larger projects, design quality, and office size. (27:32)

The Salesforce Terminal Park in San Francisco and prescriptive landscape design. (36:23)

There's a thing in landscape architecture that's impressed upon you in schoolwhich Terremoto is kind of actively coming out and againstwhich is prescriptive landscape spaces where you walk into a park and it's like: Here's how you go, and this is where you stop, and here's an amphitheater, and there's all these little things. What I'm much more interested right now[for example] is our platform parkis a kind of an exercise in like no program. Theres grass and things, but whatever it was so wrong with going outside to just be in the garden and getting back to that? I feel like civic scale parks ended up having kind of a kit of parts of the same sorts of elements, which I just think is not enough. (39:27)

    The Getty Museum Garden. (40:46)

The social meaning of plants: horticultural semiotics in landscape architecture. (49:21)

The importance of native species and why they dont always have to be used (55:45)

I would also argue that the manipulation of horticulture is inseparable from human civilization. Basically we created our society so that we could farm and in doing that, we've also always essentially gardens from the dawn of human civilization as well

It's something that's fundamentally important to Terremoto as an office to promote locally ecology. That said, it's also a very political world because the native plant community has a tendency to tell everybody else what they're doing, that what they're doing is wrong. And I don't believe that that is a way of winning over the hearts and minds of the greater populace. So I would rather build a native focused and native heavy projects while not necessarily always being explicitly native species.

Many people have a lot of negative connotation connotations with native species. At this time of year, for example, a native garden looks pretty beat up. I actually find that very beautiful, but a lot of people have different notions of beauty and are still tied up in these postwar [mentalities where] things should be green all the time. So I think what our work is trying to do is to softly push things in the direction of more native ecology. And I think as it continues to grow, people come to understand it and to be honest, what needs to happen is notions of beauty need to change. (56:51)

Landscape Architecture versus Architecture and working with Architects. (01:02:21)

Landscape architecture is unavoidably regional in a way that architecture is almost more free from context or it can be irreverent in a way that I cant. I cant put a plant in the ground that's going to die. So our practice is inevitably an expression ofat least as it relates to botanyregional characteristics. (01:36:01)

Leading an office that people want to work in. The importance of doubt and questions in the design process. Commonalities between different landscape architects. (01:13:20)

The differences between garden and buildings: Planning for their growth and evolution. (01:24:33)

Creating conceptually driven projects and the design process. (01:28:41)

In early days, wed start the project and be like, Okay, what's the project? What's our philosophy? Whats our concept? And then as time went by, we realized sometimes you do know actually early on, Let's do this thing but then sometimes you don't and you just have to start. So I've become much more flexible and soft about the fact that the conceptual narrative or like the philosophical exploration of a Terremoto project will happen but you never know quite when. (01:29:40)

Zaha Hadid Architects Reveals First Images of Sprawling Culture & Arts Centre in China – HYPEBEAST

    - December 5, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

Zaha Hadid Architects recently revealed the first images of its completed Culture & Arts Centre in the Hunan province of China. The massive structure was completed in the late Hadids iconic organic style and includes a contemporary art museum, a 1,800-seat theater, and a multipurpose hall.

SHoP Architects reveals an urban farm and wellness space for D.C.’s Ward 8 – The Architect’s Newspaper

    - December 5, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

SHoP Architects has revealed plans for a new urban farm in Washington, D.C.s Ward 8. Spearheaded by local organization DC Greens, The Well at Oxon Run will cover 50,000 square feet of land next to the Oxon Run tributary in an underserved part of the nations capital city known as Anacostia.

According to D.C. blog Urban Turf, residents in the area have a drastically lower life-expectancy rate due to diet-related chronic illnesses than people living in Northeast D.C. Poor access to quality, healthy food is a major source of strain for locals south of the Anacostia River. In an effort to combat this, The Well will grow over 150 varieties of fresh produce, herbs, and edible flowers while also housing space for events, programming, and a farmers market. DC Greens noted in a tweet that a youth classroom will also be built, and local art will be incorporated on-site.

Due to its location in a highly urbanized part of D.C.s southeastern quadrant, the project will help beautify and activate a blighted piece of landscape next to the long-polluted, seven-mile-long stream. Friends of Oxon Run, which supports activities surrounding Oxon Run and the nearby Oxon Run Park, is working with DC Greens, as well as The Green Scheme, a local nonprofit that advocates for a healthier environment on behalf of communities of color, to bolster the areas reputation.

Abby Bluestone, development director at DC Greens, toldANthat The Well will be more than a community hub or food haven, it will also be an inclusive wellness space. In this space, we will be growing crops, but mostly well be growing community, she wrote in an email. We are imagining an intergenerational space for community health and healing, centered around food A farm space that honors the full power that food has to bring people together, and make people whole.

The D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation is collaborating on the project too, which slated to start construction sometime in 2020. Before breaking ground, DC Greens hopes to raise up to $1 million in an online campaign to cover construction costs. Additional renderings are expected to follow in the coming months.
