The 7 Best Home Remedies for Carpet Stains

    - September 22, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

A wine stain on a light-colored carpet such a horror! Acting fast and knowing what to do will be the key to saving expensive rugs and getting rid of even the most stubborn stains. You can try several home remedies for carpet stains that will be incredibly efficient. The following list will give you a few ideas.

White vinegar is the perfect option for carpet cleaning and deodorizing. You can dilute half a cup of white vinegar with one cup of water. Pour in a spray bottle and do a spot treatment of the stain. Let the vinegar act for 10 to 15 minutes and blot with a paper towel.

It is usually a good idea to test the cleaning solution before getting started. Spray on a small portion of the carpet to make sure that no discoloration occurs. White vinegar is great for all kinds of fabrics but this test can help you rest assured that your carpet will remain looking brand new.

Dishwashing liquid is great for getting rid of water-soluble stains and for some kinds of greasy carpet stains.

Choose a clear liquid detergent because the coloring used in some varieties could stain the carpet. Dilute with some warm water and pour in a spray bottle. A good ratio is half a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid to one cup of water.

Dip a sponge into the cleaning liquid and rub gently into the stained area of the carpet. Blot with a paper towel and allow the carpet to dry. Vacuum clean it thoroughly to get rid of any residue.

A combination of white vinegar and baking sodais great for getting rid of stains and bad smell from your carpets.

Mix equal parts of white vinegar and baking soda. You should get a very thick paste. Dilute it with some warm water until you get the rid kind of consistency it should be thin and runny. A toothbrush or a sponge can be used to get some of the cleaning liquid into the stained area. Allow the carpet area to dry and vacuum clean thoroughly. Here are more uses for baking soda.

This is a dry cleaning option that you can try if you are adamant on preventing the carpet from getting wet.

Mix a bit of baking powder and a small amount of corn flour or corn starch. Corn starch is great for the extraction of greasy stains from the carpet. The baking powder will remove any strange or unpleasant odors.

Get started immediately after the carpet has been stained to see the best results. Sprinkle the dry cleaning powder on the stained area and keep it on for some time. The starch will absorb the greasiness from the carpet fibers. Vacuum clean the powder and take a look at the spot. Repeat the cleaning procedure if the spot is still visible.

Something as simple as club soda can be a great option for water-soluble stains. Soak a white cloth in club soda and blot the stained carpet area. Keep on soaking the cloth with club soda and repeat until you extract all of the stain from the carpet fiber. Make sure that the carpet has been thoroughly dried after you are done. Moisture stuck inside the fiber will result in unpleasant odor because it will create good conditions for mold and mildew.

Having some kind of strong carpet cleaner at home is always a good idea. You can use it on its own or you can apply the carpet cleaner after trying one of the DIY stain removal options.

Commercial carpet cleaners can be used for a wide range of stains and carpet fabrics. Simply follow the instructions and choose a high quality product that will protect the carpet while extracting verystubborn stains.

Using a carpet cleaning machine is the most effective way to get rid of pet stains and odour. Use a pet carpet cleaner with a cleaning solution specialized on pets. The cleaning solution will remove the stain and the odour, and will contain fragrance that makes your carpet smell better.

To handle pet hair they often have pet hair baskets to collect the hair.

Steam is a very powerful cleaning possibility that will help you get rid of water-soluble stains and it will disinfect your carpets.

If you have a steam cleaner, you can use a commercial cleaning product or a vinegar solution to get rid of the most common types of stains. Both of the possibilities will deliver great results but the commercial cleaner will be a bit better when it comes to handling tough stains and accumulated residue in the carpet fibers.

Now that you know which remedies for carpet stains are best, it is time to explore the best cleaning techniques. Always start working from the outside towards the center of the stained area.

Be gentle and refrain from scrubbing the carpet aggressively. This cleaning approach will simply get the stain deep into the carpet fabric, making it almost impossible to remove. Blotting is the best possibility and it should be used instead of back and forth cleaning. Gentle brushing in the same direction is permissible for really stubborn stains.

Use a white towel or a white piece of fabric to apply the cleaning solution. Color migration is a viable option, if you use a dark-colored piece of fabric on a light carpet. Paper towels and corn starch are the best options for removing excess moisture.

Bleach and bleaching products should never be used on carpet stains. Though they will dissolve the spot, such cleaning agents will also lead to carpet discoloration.

Some of the best home remedies for carpet stains are really simple and inexpensive. They will work great for the common stain varieties but if you are dealing with something really stubborn like blood or grease, try a commercial cleaner. These products are especially formulated to protect the fibers and to get rid of even the oldest and most stubborn carpet stain.

Dry vs. Wet Carpet Cleaning Which Is Really The Best …

    - September 22, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

This is an ongoing debate in the carpet industry. The companies that promote truck mount hot water extraction or often referred to as steam cleaning claim that dry or low-moisture methods dont clean as deeply as wet cleaning.

Companies who use the new low-moisture or dry cleaning systems often point out the fact that hot water extraction, or steam cleaning, typically over wets the carpet, penetrates the padding and leaves a soapy, crusty residue.

The Big Problem With Steam Cleaning or Hot Water ExtractionIf you think about it, if dirty water is removed from the carpet, but the carpet is left wet, isnt the moisture remaining in the carpet the exact same dirty water? Tests have proven that to remove the dirty water to an acceptable level with hot water extraction (or steam cleaning), the carpets would need to be thoroughly rinsed as many as 16 times.

Interestingly, a tactic some steam cleaners use in an attempt to prove that the previous steam cleaning company didnt do a good job is a demonstration of this fact. They simply go back over an area that has recently been cleaned and show the dirty filthy water that came out the carpet. Are you serious? We just had this carpet cleaned! is the typical reaction from observers. This demonstration is especially common in commercial carpet cleaning but the result is the same for residential carpet. You can prove it to yourself by renting a rug doctor at your local grocery store and re-clean an area that was steam cleaned just a day or two before. You probably wont be happy with what you see.

In a national surveyquizzingconsumers about their most bothering issues when it comes to carpet cleaning, the overwhelming #1 complaint was that the carpets were left too wet and took way too long to dry. The #2 complaint was that spots and stains resurfaced after the carpet had finally dried.

Most carpet cleaning companies are still trying to clean carpet the old way, utilizing traditional steam cleaning (or hot water extraction). Youve seen them with the big van out front with hoses running across the yard and into the house. Steam Cleaning (actually its really not steam its just hot water) is a 40 year-old process that can leave the carpets wet for many hours (or even days).

It is an old system that relies on high water pressure, high alkaline detergent and hot water to clean. This process easily forces water, chemicals and dirt through the base of the carpet into the pad and even onto the subfloor. The water and detergent is then vacuumed out of the carpet (only 60-80% actually comes out), but because the pad and subfloors are so wet, it takes a long time for the carpet to become totally dry. This can cause wicking issues (spots and stains rising up the carpet fibers through evaporation), mildew and mold, odor problems and quick re-soiling not to mention a total inconvenience. No wonder there are so many consumer complaints!

Not Environmentally FriendlyHot water extraction or steam cleaning is certainly not an eco-friendly process. The equipment used for wet carpet cleaning is costly, heavy, noisy, high maintenance, large, complicated to use, burns a lot of fuel and puts out toxic exhaust fumes. It takes a lot of fuel to power the equipment and after cleaning, hot water cleaners have to find a place to legally dump the chemical laced dirty water otherwise it ends right back in the citys water supply. Not a pleasant thought.

The Advantage of Dry Organic Carpet CleaningThe carpet cleaning industry has come a long way in 40 years. With modern low moisture carpet cleaning systems, carpets can be left thoroughly clean and completely dry in 30 minutes or less; stains will not come back, and carpets will repel dirt after cleaning, allowing your carpets to stay cleaner much longer. The equipment is far less expensive, light weight, quiet, maintenance free, easy to use, easy to transport, easy to store, and there are no freezing issues. There is no fuel consumed or smelly toxic exhaust, and there is no chemical laced water to dump back into the citys water supply.

Dry (or low moisture) carpet cleaning systems also utilize eco-friendly green cleaning agents (chemical and residue free). Think about it. Would you prefer to be left with wet, gushy, icky carpet or totally dry, clean, soft and fresh carpet?

So which system is really the best?More than anything else, it depends on the circumstances. For situations where there is water damage caused by leaking pipes, flooding, severe weather, improperly sealed windows, a leaking roof, overflowing sinks, improper drainage, as well as many other sources, truck mount hot water extraction is definitely whats called for. Its what we recommend 100% of the time for our customers that find themselves in this unfortunate situation. But for routine residential as well as commercial carpet cleaning we feel dry organic carpet cleaning is the only way to go. Why? This system is eco-friendly, your carpet will be completely dry within minutes, and it does an AMAZING job of removing soils, spots and stains even those left behind by the previous cleaner. We cant always put the new back into your carpet, but what we do is amazingly close.

Experience & Training Is The KeyJust like any other process or tool, the outcome depends not on not only the method but on the training, experience and knowledge of the technician using the cleaning method.Rest assured that your carpet is in experienced and professional hands when you call Southern Dry Carpet Cleaning. Youll love it We Guarantee It!

Residue left behind by detergents and shampoos cause dirt to quickly accumulate over time.

Powered Water is applied to your carpet fibers by our patented high-pressure, controlled spray process that loosens embedded dirt and removes it through our patented extraction zr wand. Your carpet is clean with No Residue and the dry time is dramatically reduced because we don't flood your carpets with water, unlike most other carpet cleaners. Our zr wand combines the joint properties of fluid mechanics and pressure dynamics. This means that we clean down to the bottom of your carpets fibers-removing embedded dirt, soils, dried soaps (when previously cleaned by another carpet cleaner) and other debris.

Another great benefit of the Zerorez cleaning process is that spots are much less likely to reappear. Reappearing spots are often the result of wicking action from the back of the carpet to the tips of the carpet fiber as the carpet dries. We eliminate this and de-lamination (caused by conventional hot water extraction cleaning methods) because we do not penetrate the primary backing.

Cyrus Construction finished our basement in a most professional and timely manner. My wife and I are totally satisfied with the design, multiple revisions due to the many challenges for an unfinished basement, and the execution by the various teams. Thus, we highly recommend Cyrus for your basement finishing or remodeling. I would begin with the initial design. Since I was away, my wife and the manager, Russell Blake, initially surveyed and came up with a very complete plan. We underwent multiple revisions to perfect the design due to the relocation of the bathroom rough-in. The team did an outstanding job! Consequently, the bath was nicely relocated with the basement having an overall open and spacious floor plan. Further, the bathroom, unlike the rest of the bathrooms, was finished with tiles and glass shower. It has become the best modern and my favorite bathroom of the house! The construction processes were well organized, with team members rotating depending on the stage of the project. They were most courteous and on-time. At the end of each working day, the team members left the house in good order. The manager in charge was very responsive and responsible. The passage ways down to the basement was well protected. After 5 short weeks, we are totally delighted with highly quality the finished basement in every way workmanship, paint, carpeting, lighting, and again, the modern bathroom. Again, Russell Blake did an outstanding job! We would probably have Cyrus for our future bathroom and kitchen updates. We highly recommend Cyrus Construction. From two totally satisfied customers!

Finished Basement Remodeling Contractors In Livonia, MI

    - September 22, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

    1. Waterproof

It's been said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and when it comes to keeping your basement dry, that saying is even more true.

Michigan basements are notorious for flooding during the spring and summer months which can lead to costly mold removal and foundation repairs. The good news is its much less painful on your wallet to bite the bullet and get your basement waterproofed than it is to pay for the after the damage has been done.

    2. Winterize

As a Livonia based construction company, we know all about the harsh Michigan winters and how to keep the cold air outside where it belongs.

The key to keeping your house warm throughout the year (and lowering your energy bills) is having good insulation and sealing any air leaks in your basement.

    3. Install Good Lighting

The right lighting setup can transform your basement from a dark, uninviting room to a place that everybody enjoys (and the kids won't be afraid of).

We recommend a combination of ambient, task and accent lighting to help brighten things up and create a warm atmosphere.

    4. Review Your City's Code Requirements

Whether you choose to DIY or hire a finished basement remodeling contractor, you want to be clear on your city's code specifications before beginning any construction. If you do hire a contractor, you'll also want to make certain the company has the required licensing and insurance to safely and legally handle your job.

Otherwise, seemingly minor violations like failing to pull the proper permit or building a room without an egress window can lead to expensive repairs down the road.

    5. Build In Storage

If you're considering a remodel but still want plenty of storage space, make sure to plan for closets, shelves and room under the stairway. This way, even if your basement becomes a "catch-all" space for unused items, it won't look crowded or unorganized.

    6. Appropriate Flooring

In Michigan, theres two main concerns to keep in mind for your basement flooring The likelihood of flooding and the side effects from both cold and dry weather.

For areas such as bathrooms and laundry rooms where moisture is more prevalent, it's best to use a tile floor. Whereas, carpet is often an ideal choice fio areas that will be used for playing games or lounging.

    7. Choose The Right Contractor

Whether you want to completely finish your basement or simply update the existing layout, hiring a qualified remodeling contractor is a necessity.

At Pachota Construction, we possess the extensive knowledge required to remodel your basement so it's both functional and aesthetically pleasing. With the expertise of our trained contractors, we can transform your unfinished basement into whatever you want, whether its a room for entertaining, working out or a large office.

We offer a 12-month guarantee on our work. If you believe our labor is unacceptable, you can feel confident knowing we will send a contractor back to make corrections.

    Properly Licensed & Insured

By hiring Pachota Construction, you get the piece of mind that comes with knowing your contractor has the right credentials to safely and legally complete your job.

Explore Basement Remodeling Ideas with a Best Pick (Part 1 …

    - September 22, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

This article was crafted with the help of Bryan Sebring from Sebring Services

Tackling a basement remodeling project can be a huge undertakingwhether you simply want to make the space more livable or design a more elaborate room that allows your basement to blend in with the rest of your home.

We enlisted the help of one of our Best Picks, owner Bryan Sebring of Sebring Services, Inc., Residential Remodeling in Naperville, IL, to answer some of the questions you may have concerning the basement renovation process.

There are many reasons why homeowners may want to transform their basement into a usable space, but Bryan says that one of the most common motivations for a basement remodel lies with having children.

Parents may have young kids and are sick of tripping over toys in the dining room or family room. For those customers, we typically create a playroom and TV room. Parents with teenagers often want their kids to have a fun basement to hang out ina place where they can watch TV or play games.

While the majority of Bryans projects are kid-focused, some homeowners want adult areas that may include a bar, pool table, and TV area for football season.

The basement could also be transformed into an additional bedroom for guests, in-laws, or a live-in nanny. Bryan cautions that if you are adding a bedroom to your basement, you have to make sure that you have an escape window, and most houses built before 2002 dont have the correct egress or escape window.

Basement windows in older homes usually require you to lift the whole window out to escape during an emergency. To meet current codes, homeowners need normal-use windows that lift or slide open easily.

To add the right window to an older house, the company has to cut the concrete and dig the window wells out deeper, which will cost the homeowner more.

Bryan says that exercise rooms are also a popular renovation for the basement. When creating an exercise room, you want to make sure that its not too small because you wont use the room if it is.

The standard ceiling height in a house is eight feet; in most basements, youll probably have below thatcloser to seven feet. For an exercise room, though, you have to make sure you have good ceiling height, especially with treadmills, says Bryan.

You want to be able to step on a treadmill and use the incline without touching the ceiling. Bryan recommends adding large double doors to open up the space while working out. Sometimes well add glass panes to the double doors so that you can see through to more space.

The biggest thing with basements, in general, is to give the illusion that the space is grand, big, and open, not confined.

As stated before, basements can be a challenging remodel because they often have lower ceilings than the rest of the house and lack natural light. However, a good contractor will be able to overcome the challenges basements present.

Were really conscious about making the spacein the basement feel bigger. Thats why we use ambient lighting such as track lighting or overhead recessed lightingwe add a lot of ambient lighting, which helps brighten up the basement and points your eye away from the ceiling.

Lamps that point your eyes up toward the ceiling are best for rooms with cathedral ceilings where you want to show how grand the space is, says Bryan. In basements, you want to point your eyes down. Because the bulb in ambient lighting points down, your eyes are going to naturally look down.

Another way to distract the eye from a low ceiling is to add wainscoting instead of crown molding. We advise against adding crown molding unless the ceiling is at least eight feet high.

Crown molding will draw attention to how low the ceilings are, explains Bryan. Instead, well do wainscoting, which is a trim that is about three feet up from the floor; it helps keep you from noticing how low the ceiling is.

Dark paint can make many rooms feel cozier, but in a basement, it can make everything appear dark and smaller. I always suggest that homeowners paint their doors and trim white over staining them, says Bryan.

When you stain your wood doors and trim, it gives the basement a darker look. But white paint really helps to keep the space bright.

As mentioned earlier, egress or escape windows are required for basements that have a bedroom. Egress windows can also help to bring natural light into the basement, but Bryan advises against adding windows if its not required.

Its great to add a window to your space, but its very expensive, and it can add significant costs to your overall project, he says. If youre on a budget, I wouldnt suggest it. If you dont plan on using the space for sleeping, an egress window is not necessary.

We will return tomorrow with more basement remodeling tips from Bryan Sebring, owner of Naperville, IL, Best Pick company Sebring Services. He gives advice on how to remodel on a budget, how to remodel an older home, and what other information you should know before hiring a remodeling contractor.
