I wasnt planning on doing this until August 2027. I was going to write my 35th anniversary column and bid the industry farewell. As it stands, Im not sure if Im bidding farewell, but as Editor-in-Chief and Associate Publisher for The Paint Dealer and The Paint Contractor, farewell will be finalized after our next and last issue and Mugler Publications will close down. Ill be bluntas Ive been accused of more than oncewith the move from print to digital advertising, we cant make ends meet and we need to close our doors. It was not a decision we made lightly; it was not a decision we wanted to make at all. For all of you who have enjoyed us, read us, even come to depend on us for industry news and information, I am very sorry.

There are a lot of folks I need to thank, too many over these years and Im sure I would leave people out. Ive worked with a lot of awesome and amazing people, and as they get new jobs they move on to other things. Sometimes you think back and say to yourself, if only Tricia was still doing that job, stuff would get done. But things change, and Im not always good at change. Ive had a Star Wars poster on my walls almost continuously since 1983. Its collectible because it advertises Revenge of the Jedi before the movie title was changed to Return. It finally came down this year. Once something is in place, it stays in place. I dont know if thats good or bad.

So while Ive got this platform: once my Paint Dealer email expires, you can get hold of me at [emailprotected]. I can write and Im for hire. I can even write music for your promotional video. I always like to tell the story of when I took the Feature Article Writing class in college and the professor said I didnt have what it takes. And when I came in here in August 1992, I looked at an issue of The Paint Dealer and thought I could never do this.

Ive often told how when I took this job, I took it from a writing perspective, and I decided to make paint, painting, and even paint drying as interesting as I possibly could. I know it surprised a few folks, but most of the time we got good response. We could take the mundane and make it fun to read. As I got more into creating and curating The Paint Contractor we became positioned as the voice of the smaller painter, the guy with two or three, maybe seven crew members. We put you on the cover because what you do and who you are is important and worthwhileit makes a difference to so many people. As someone who doesnt love to paint, Im glad to come into contact with so many who do.

Nick Slavik, you created a national constituency and educated America on the dignity and respectability of being a professional craftsman who strives for the best. Rich Bloom, you showed us that a painter can work on his own terms, even if it means making certain sacrifices for that freedom. Marion Armwood, you showed us that any kind of painting matters and can be done with pride, be it high end residential or quick turnover apartments and dormitories.

Erick Gatcomb, youve shown us a bit of everything, some might say too much, but youve humanized the profession and youve made it OK to publicly declare, I had a drink after work. [Emphasis on the after.] Theres more accomplishment in that than you know. Matt Drinnon, Zack Harris, Tyler Hansen, youve helped us show out professionals who love to paint, who dont just do it because they cant hold a job at Seven-Eleven. That its a worthwhile profession, and that it deserves respect and good pay. Beverly Kruskol and Elaine Thompson, you showed us that a woman can find a place in whats mostly a mans industry, and that in the long run it doesnt matter who wields the brush or who signs the check. To the many paint retailers Ive met over the years, youve shown us how to stand up to the challenges of an inevitable change, to come out stronger, to look it in the face and say, Im not going anywhere.

From here, it always felt good to reward hard work with some good words in these pages. Everyone cant be rich, and everyone cant be famous, but for a day in TPC you could be all that. What I will regret most is if I lose the power to do that; if the industry loses the place and the power to do that, we will all be worse off for that loss.

I guess, and since as I write this Bosss Day is around the corner, its important to mention at least a small contribution from da boss and company owner Hans Mugler, who did everything he could to keep this going longer than many people thought he should have. I know some folks see him as rather blustery, but hes fostered an environment here that lets us rise to our best achievement; everyone on staff has been able to contribute their creative abilities in their own style without being micromanaged. In order to work here, you had to be a self-starter and get your job done without someone in your rear view mirror, but you could bring your own creativity to the office without being shot down. Hes been a friend to every one of us on staff, often going above and beyond just about work. I think a lot of people would appreciate having a boss like Hans.

With any luck Ill be around the industry, with any luck one or both of these publications will come around in a different form; perhaps we can still bring you the good word of products and processes under another banner. I hope, if we are friends, we can stay friends. Thanks to all of you who have stuck by me, our wonderful staff, our mission, and The Paint Dealer & The Paint Contractor magazines. Its been our pleasure to be of service.

Please contact us immediately if there is any property that is damaged by our crew. We will send out a salesman to take a look and take pictures and document all damage. Our salesman will use their best judgement to determine what actions will be taken.Upon your notification, we will repair the damage in a timely manner. We will not honor any request for repair expenses for damaged property that we were not made aware of or allowed to repair in a timely manner. If you fix the property on your own without contacting us beforehand, we will not refund you any costs associated with the repairs. Before I discovered headphones, I used to wear earbuds and crank them up to their highest levels to drown the annoying noises from the lawn mower.

At the end of the yard work session, my ears would ache for a while.

Well, think about it, I was adding more decibels to relieve the damaging decibels.

Its synonymous with adding gasoline to fire, right?

To the rescue are Sync Stereo Earmuffs by Howard Leight.

The hearing protectors combine the headphone technology with protection earmuffs.

How is the noise reduction?

The pieces provide you with a 25 noise reduction rating (NRR) which is perfect when working in low to medium noise levels such as in the yard.

The volume is limited to 82 dBA rating which is below the maximum 85 dBA recommended by OSHA.

Compared to the other headphones I have used over the years, these pieces seem to block most of the outside noise so well.

I can attribute this to their solid construction with strong plastic housing and vinyl padding that surrounds the ear completely.

I dont about you, but I have a big head. When I wear the headphones, they are very tight on the head which prevents most of the noise from getting in.

Does the radio work?

I also own 3M Tek and Peltor headphones but I have to say that the FM radio tuner in these headphones is one of the best I have ever come across.

I live in the rural areas but the tuner doesnt have problems finding the radio stations, as its the case with other headphones I have used before.

The headphones feature an LCD display that lets you know the stations that are available. When I started using the headphones, I had problems with the controls, especially the volume control.

Maybe its because the control is recessed into the pieces. If you look at it, the control is only exposed at the very bottom thus it can be a challenge to properly control the volume.

When I switched on the radio, I was surprised to notice that the headphones are much louder than my Pelter and Tek. This may be due to the superior noise reduction that they provide as they have the same specs as the other headphones.

Are the headphones comfortable?

Howard Leight has installed a number of great features on these headphones that makes them some of the most comfortable pieces in the market that you can buy.

This means that any material that isnt made from natural fiber, cant stand my sweat.

These headphones are made from solid vinyl, which as all of you know, isnt natural. After a few minutes under the sun, the headphones get too slippery and I have to keep on putting them in place, which is distracting.

Is the music good?

Well, you will enjoy the music, but its not the same as when using high-end headphones. Lets be honest, Sync earmuffs arent meant to be in the audiophile arena.

You shouldnt expect the sweet, clear music you get when using top-notch headphones such as

You will experience distortion and harshness, especially when listening to higher frequencies. The good part of these pieces is the bass. Its sweet. Its neither boomy nor tiring, as its the case with cheap headphones.

If you arent looking for extremely high volumes, these earmuffs will work perfectly for you.

In conclusion, I can say that the Howard Leight sync stereo earmuffs are decent, inexpensive earmuffs for lawn mowing, but you shouldnt expect audio nirvana.

Lot Size Discrepancy

Our pricing is based on your lot's total square footage. We will schedule service and confirm the accuracy of your lot size. However, if there is a discrepancy in lot size, we will adjust your pricing accordingly and charge your card the correct price.

Items In The Lawn

In order for us to offer affordable prices for our services, our crews must work efficiently and quickly. We ask that you please remove toys, lawn chairs, or any other misc. items from your lawn prior to our crew showing up for service. This will insure that we can be as efficient as possible, allowing us to keep or prices affordable.

Surprises

When you sign up for service it is assumed that your lawn is not overgrown; and prices are based as such. It takes substantially longer to mow an overgrown lawn, and clippings will need to be bagged and removed/disposed of. If our crew shows up for the first time to provide service and your lawn is overgrown you will be charged 2.5 times the weekly rate for the initial mowing.

Leaves

Leaf clean up is not a part of our Mow & Go service. While we will mulch small amounts of leaves and disperse them into the lawn, large amounts of leaves will leave a less than desirable result. If your property has large trees or is surrounded by large trees, you may want to take advantage of our Fall Leaf Clean-Up service to assure a well kept yard. Please contact us for a quote.

Planting Beds & Tree Rings

De-weeding and cultivating planting beds & tree rings is not a part of the Mow & Go service. We offer this service on a time and material bases. Please refer to our Services Offered page.

Gates & Pets

If you lock your gate, it must have a combination lock for us to service your property. Our crews are very careful about locking and closing gates, but we do not guarantee that a pet will not escape from the yard, therefore, you accept our service with this provision. Please make sure your pets are inside when we are out to service your yard. If your pet is outside we will not enter to mow the area your pet is contained in. If your gate is locked and we can not unlock the gate we will not mow the area contained by the locked gate. No credit will be given as a result of the above conditions.

Pools

Servicing a home with a pool actually creates more edging, line trimming, and less open areas to mow. It also takes extra time to minimize the grass clipping from going into the pool. Because of this, there is no reduction in price.

Insurance

We are fully insured.

Liability

Marty Mows shall not be liable for damages by reason of any delay in commencement or completion of work due to causes beyond its control and without its fault or negligence including, but not limited to, acts of god or of the public enemy, acts of the government, fires, floods, epidemics, quarantine restrictions, strikes, freight embargoes, unusually sever weather or delays of a subcontractor due to such causes. In addition, customer shall indemnify, defend and hold harmless Marty Mows and any of its employees, agents and subcontractors from any and all claims, damages, losses, and expenses, including but not limited to attorneys fees arising from any damage, loss, or injuries caused directly or indirectly to any and all property, persons or entities.
