Caution Homeowners!
Can You Really Trust Your Contractor?
Just because your contractor is skilled, and loves old houses and renovating a home, does NOT mean your contractor knows about or is qualified to provide old home restoration services. Working on old houses requires special knowledge. Old House Guy has this expertise and will help you work with your home remodeling contractors to get the results youre looking for!
Your house is our priority. We only do whats right for your house!
Whether Youre Restoring Victorian Homes or maintaining a 1980 Cape Cod. You may not realize you need our Services!
Recently we worked with two happy homeowners looking for home restoration services. One couple wanted to remodel their 1990s house to appear more traditional so it would fit in better with the older homes in the area. The other homeowner had an 1870s Victorian that needed some minor work.
Both of these homeowners were very excited to share their plans and the wonderful creativity of their contractors. They were so happy to spend their money on modifications they really believed would look good. But all they were left with was bad design.
You cant really blame the overly enthusiastic contractor or the homeowners. Theyre both exposed to so much bad design; they cant help but want to reproduce it. What they needed was the expert guidance of Old House Guy, masters of traditional home design and old house renovation.
There is a video out there about Spring Break called Girls Gone Wild. Someday I will make a similar video called, Contractors, Architects, and Homeowners Gone Wild.
Yes you can make a new house have more of a period or traditional appearance but you must understand traditional architecture! More importantly you need to know what NOT to do.
Traditional architecture is something todays architects are no longer taught unless they are specialized in historic preservation. For an old or new house, this training is essential!
Just because a homeowner spends a lot of money on a project and does a lot of work doesnt mean the house will look good. It can still look all wrong.
Many of the people who try the hardest to make their house look good are the ones that fail.
A homeowner whos renovating a home will get wrapped up in their project and not see the problem so they keep buying and buying: New light fixtures, new landscaping etc. They dont realize these are merely distractions from the fundamental issues they and their home remodeling contractors have created. After all this expense they finally convince only themselves their house looks good. And it usually only looks good to the UNTRAINED eye.
Here is an example of a house that may look nice to the untrained eye but there are many mistakes that go unnoticed. See traditional home design mistakes here .
Just remember that future homeowners will scrutinize what you do to your house. There is a lot to understand about architectural design and old house restoration services .
The following is an excerpt by Steve Mouzon that explains what people do to their old and new homes.
. . . historic homes consist of misshapen pieces of modern or Disneyland interpreted traditional architecture stitched together with no clear vision of what the result should be. The same is for current construction stitched together with semi-traditional pieces or architecture.
Most people probably cant explain exactly what is wrong with this sort of building because there are just enough traditional pieces thrown in to make it look vaguely traditional at first glance just as Frankenstein looked vaguely human at first.
Trust the Guidance of OHGs Old House Renovation
Do not make this mistake I will help you! You can buy books and study design or you can ask Old House Guy. No matter what you decide to do to your house, at least you will understand your options and be a better-informed and educated consumer at a just a small cost.
There are great sites like Houzz that offer advice too. Just because 100 people tell you to do something does NOT mean its right.
Remember you cant always trust your contractor or architect. You may need to educate them in correct design for your house. Unfortunately thats how it is today. Let the buyer beware! Let us help you!
If youre planning a project and want a partner with education and experience renovating a home, Click Here to contact The Old House Guy today .

When our home of 45 years was demolished in Joplin's horrible F-5 tornado of 2011, we were consequently relocated to the south KC metro area and have lived here since. Hoping we were through with weather disasters forever, we learned life sometimes has other things in store! In our 90s now, the last thing we thought we would be doing in the cold January weather of 2018 is relocating again, albeit for only a short time due to having a water pipe freeze, break and flood our home. We cannot possibly explain what it is like at our ages to go through stressful times such as this incident presented. Working with Wilson Home Restoration allowed us to relax and understand that we were working with the BEST. Their friendly reassurance that all would be taken care of in a timely manner was very much appreciated. Communication with them was EXCELLENT! Never did we feel ignored or bothersome. In fact, much of the communication was prompted by WHR, just as part of the ongoing efficient work they provide. Attention to detail is their strong suit. We were soon quite comfortably back in our home and are still enjoying all the nice compliments we receive regarding the work Wilson Home Restoration did for us. Leadership and craftsmanship are benchmarks for them. A fine company to work with making it so easy to share in the rave reviews enabling others to benefit from their work too. Thank you Wilson Home Restoration!

When it came to deciding whether or not to choose a 2nd story addition, the deciding factor was the ability to add the second story at a reasonable cost while retaining more yard space by not adding onto the ground floor, said Justin and Jennifer Hyland, Memorial Area.
One of the most popular reasons to choose a 2nd story addition is to preserve outdoor recreational space. An increasingly popular trend in home renovation is the creation of 2nd story additions on single floor dwellings.
There are several pros, cons and myths about building up. First of all, a few pros are you wont lose any of your yard nor will you bump into zoning restrictions about setbacks or floor-area-ratio limits, which in turn increases the value of your home, however, the cons are you have to account for a stairwell, which can easily eat up around 80 to 120 square feet or more of living space. And your contractor will likely have to tear apart the walls and ceilings in the space below to beef up the structural supports and feed in the electrical, plumbing and heating lines.
According to Structural Engineer, Adam Bakir from Incredible Renovations, Houston, TX,
It is a common myth that existing concrete slabs cannot handle the additional loads caused by adding a second story. In actuality, additional loads are transferred through various structural members down to the foundations at certain point load locations.
In actuality, the replacement of existing foundations is not a necessity when adding a second floor. A majority of the time you can add selected spots on the foundation where the new loads from the second floor are concentrated. This often consists of the excavation under a small section of the foundation and adding concrete and rebar to create a new wider and stronger footing in that spot.
For that reason retaining the services of a professional structural engineer is extremely essential so he/she runs the analysis and prescribes the correct solutions every time before your contractor begins the work.
Another pro for adding a 2nd story to your home is the extra living space that you will gain. Some homeowners use the extra space for living areas such as a game room for your children or an indoor gym. The 2nd story addition also adds extra value to your home so if you ever decide to sell it, you will get back what you put into it. Any time you increase your square footage you stand to increase the value of your homesimply because the price is often calculated based on factors such as the amount of livable space.
To be honest, initially we were only looking to build an addition that went out, not up. Architectural Designer, Mayrem from Incredible Renovations presented us with two options, one being, just building out for an in-law suite and the other was both out and up, redoing the first floor bedroom area, opening up the living areas, and adding the second story. We loved the way she made incredible use of our existing space and the second floor design was perfect for our kids. said Kevin Timmreck, Houston, TX.
Kevins wife Louann Timmreck said,
We had two reasons for adding on to our house. After my dad passed away, my mom was alone in her house. We didnt want her to be alone and wanted her to come live with us. We decided to add an addition downstairs for my mom. However, we also wanted to do a second story addition so we could add room for our three children. Prior to adding the second story, my girls shared a bedroom and all three kids shared one bathroom. Adding the upstairs gave them their own room and additional bathrooms. It also gave them the space to hang out with their friends. We have a large backyard and building up, allowed us to continue to enjoy that space. Now everyone has their own space and we couldnt be happier!
Many homeowners engage in renovations every year. Some prefer to hire an architect to begin the process and some prefer to hire a construction company that can do everything for them from start to finish. After all, unless you build your home from scratch, chancesare youre not going to get everything you desire when purchasing your dream home.
If you are trying to sell your home that has been on the market for a long time and for whatever reason it is not selling, at that point it may be a better decision to build up and reconfigure the house rather than selling it? What do you think? For a lot of families the answer is yes!

Smell: I advise using essential oils in an ultrasonic diffuser or in a candle diffuser (most wax candles these days are packed with synthetic fragrances). Limit it to a few drops of oil in diluted in water, and don't leave them diffusing for more than an hour or two. They are potent! I love lavender and jasmine oils for a calming smell before bed. If I have a cough, I'll go with ravintsara or eucalyptus. Looking to amp up the sexual energy? Check out cinnamon, ylang-ylang, and best of all, winter savory.
Touch: In the bedroom, it's best to go with soft, inviting fabrics when possible. I'd recommend velvet, satin, and Egyptian cottons for all sheets, pillows, cushions, and curtains. Your bed sheets should feel particularly soft to the skin.
Sight: As I mentioned before, Earthy tones are really what you want to be seeing in the bedroom. Fiery tones (reds, pinks, and oranges) can also be nice in moderation. Again, these accents should always be presented in pairs. In my bedroom, you'll find a pair of small pink Mandarin ducksa traditional Chinese symbol. I love these because the story goes that the ducks were always faithful to each other. Find accents like this that speak to you.
Sound: I'd recommend a small white-noise machine to play soothing tunes.
Taste: While I do not bring food into my bedroom, I always make sure to keep a small jar of water next to the bed. Place some lemon in there and drink it in the morning for a quick boost.
You'll also want to consult a Bagua map to see what elements to pull into your space. Locate what Bagua your bedroom is located in relationship to the front door of your house, and add accessories accordingly. For example, if your bedroom falls in the Health and Family area, where the dominant element is wood, try to incorporate greens and blues in order to sustain that element.

SI Restoration, certified through the IICRC Mold Remediation program, provides compassionate, thorough, mold remediation services.
Mold is found both indoors and outdoors. Mold can enter your home or office through open doorways, windows, vents, and heating and air conditioning systems. Mold in the air outside can also attach itself to clothing, shoes, bags, and pets can and be carried indoors.
Indoors, mold will grow in places with a lot of moisture, such as areas around leaks in roofs, windows, or pipes, or where there has been flooding. Mold grows well on paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, and wood products. Mold can also grow in dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery.
Mold growth, which often looks like spots, can be many different colors, and can smell musty. If you can see or smell mold, a health risk may be present. You do not need to know the type of mold growing in your home, and the Center for Disease Control does not recommend or perform routine sampling for molds. No matter what type of mold is present, you should remove it. Since the effect of mold on people can vary greatly, either because of the amount or type of mold, you can not rely on sampling and culturing to know your health risk. The best practice is to remove the mold and work to prevent future growth.
