An interior designer is responsible for the interior design, decoration, and functionalityof a clients space, whether the space is commercial, industrial, or residential. Interior designerswork closely with architects and clients to determine the structure of a space, the needs ofthe occupants, and the style that best suits both. The position is a combination of engineerand artist, and it takes a unique type of mind to handle both of those concepts well. Interiordesigners have to be good with more than color, fabric, and furniture; interior designers mustknow materials, have budgeting skills, communicate well, and oversee the ordering, installation, and maintenance of all objects thatdefine a space. They also have to know aboutelectrical capacity, safety, and construction. This broader range of required knowledge distinguishes them from interior decorators.Interior designers have to be able to work with contractors and clients alike, planningand implementing all aesthetic and functional decisions, from faucet handles to miles of carpetingand all this usually must be done within a fixed budget. Interior designers are hiredfor their expertise in a variety of styles and approaches, not merely their own personal vision. Therefore, they have to be able to balance their own tastes and their clients tastesand bewilling to put their clients tastes first. This requirement can be frustrating at first for manywho enter the profession.Interior designers are often asked to begin their planning before construction of a spaceis finished; this means that they must be good at scheduling and comfortable reading blueprints. This element of the job comes as a surprise to many new interior designers, whoexpect to have less of an administrative and technical role and more of a role in influencingthe overall feel and appearance of a space. Those who thrive in the industry say this ability tobalance the practical with the aesthetic is crucial to being a successful interior designer.Interior design is hard work, but those who do it well find the work very satisfying.Paying Your DuesThe academic and professional requirements for most areas of design are fairly general, with the emphasis on portfolio development and professional experience. Interior design, however, has nationallystandardized requirements. Interior designers must have a bachelorsdegree. Employers look favorably on those who have studied engineering, design, and art. Thosewho want more specific study complete interior design programs. Across the United States andCanada, there are 105 colleges and universities accredited by the Foundation for Interior DesignEducation Research. Interior designers must also be familiar with federal, state, and local interiordesign codes (involving such issues as capacity, flammability, and stress levels). To be federallylicensed, prospective interior designers must pass the qualification exam given by theNational Council for Interior Design. Professional organizations are significant in this field, and many interior designers find it helpful to join one or more of them. To become eligible formembership, one must have completed two to three years of graduate work, worked in the fieldfor two to three years, and passed the federal licensing exam.Present and FutureIn years past, only the wealthy could afford to hire an interior designer. Most peopledesigned their interiors themselves. With the expansion and popularization of the field, along with significant reductions in the cost of materials, even modest-income families maynow hire interior designers. However, many still design their interiors without professionalhelp.Interior designers should have a bright future and are expected to be in demand. Manyowners and occupants of professional and residential complexes are turning to professionalinterior designers to shape their spaces. There is also significant age-pressure in the industry, and a significant number of interior designers are expected to retire soon. This will openadditional positions for younger interior designers. Discussions about making the requirementsfor the profession more stringent have been broached, but no specific legislative proposalshave emerged to date.Quality of Life
PRESENT AND FUTURE
Two years into the profession, many aspiring interior designers are working asinterns or assistants, as entry into the field is competitive. A number of studentsmake connections through relationships their schools have with major employers.. Duringthese first two years, many act as assistants, learning budgeting, competitive pricing, andclient communication skills. Salaries are low or nonexistent in these early years, hours arelong, and satisfaction may be low. About 20 percent of potential interior designers leave theprofession within the first three years.
FIVE YEARS OUT
After five years, interior designers have significant professional experience and apaying job in the industry. The large majority have passed the federal licensingexam. Many have associate-level responsibility for projects and work relatively unsupervised.Budgeting and cost-estimating are still reserved for more senior members of theprofession. Many consider starting their own interior design firm during these middle years.Hours become more stable, and salary increases.
TEN YEARS OUT
Ten-year interior designers have significant budgeting and cost-estimating responsibilityand extensive client contact. The majority of those who wanted to start theirown interior design firms have done so by this time, and many can point to a numberof homes, offices, or stores where potential clients can see living examples of their work.Hours remain stable, and salaries increase.

"Finch and the team have been a dream to work with. I had a creative vision of what I wanted, which they were able to deliver and exceed. They had a great eye for detail, were innovative and created beautiful little details for my kitchen and wardrobes. I even set Finch's team the challenge of making an experimental cement work top, which looks amazing. As a team they were really friendly and were totally dedicated to achieving a beautiful finish."

"I have worked with Sola Kitchens for a number of my client projects to date. They are a great company to work with, and always come up with interesting layout ideas and design solutions, working with the design style and colours that I have specified. Their installation team are excellent too, and I would highly recommend Sola Kitchens for any kitchen project as they are able to supply a wide range of styles from more traditional to very contemporary."

"We've used Eclectic Interiors on 3 occasions to refurbish our shower room, family bathroom and kitchen and each time they have produced beautiful top notch work. Jolanta runs a great team and is very hands on with designs and has some great, practical ideas. Clear, written quotes with a complete breakdown are provided so that everyone knows exactly where they stand. We are thrilled with our bathrooms and kitchen and cannot recommend Eclectic Interiors highly enough."

"I'd just like to say that Toma Petraityte, Senior Design Consultant did a fantastic job in understanding what I needed for my kitchen. B+Q had let me down massively - I'd been going in there for nearly a year and the three specific items/requirements I wanted from them (which initially they said would not be an issue or a problem) they said could not be done. So back to square one! Toma totally understood my needs and interpreted them brilliantly into the kitchen that I wanted (a retro 1950s American diner). The units were there, the appliances I wanted were there. She gave me suggestions that I may not have considered and did actually put these into the kitchen. I unfortunately did not go with LWK. It was a close call with another kitchen company - who were both neck and neck in terms of design. I will have no hesitation in recommending LWK and also Toma herself. A great Designer and a great kitchen company. Thank you Toma for all your hard work, the hours you put in and at times questions that I asked that were down right silly!"

"We have now worked with Joe & Tomaz on two projects in the Ealing area. Their cabinetry products are unique to them, as opposed to acting as a retailer for a brand, such as ALNO or Nolte. The painted lacquer and veneer finishes need to be seen to be believed. Their use of thicker carcass materials adds a quality of rigidity and strength. Having managed the installation of kitchens on our projects from a variety of different manufacturers, I have found the quality of their product to be superior to any other which I have seen in and around this price-point. In daily and direct contact with their European factory, there is great visibility to progress on the manufacture and lead-in times, which contributes to the success and timely coordination of the whole project. Point5's positive attitude to collaborative working and coordination on site with the builders and other trades is great in building a successful project team. "I had the pleasure of working with Jack Trench Ltd on our project at Crosby Row, London. They were commissioned by our client to develop the design of the kitchen, which needed to compliment the volume into which it was being placed. This they did with ease, developing a design, which not only understood our intent but which was made to an extremely high quality and executed with an attention to detail that was quite singular. Jack seemed to intuitively understand our design strategy and responded to the brief in a way that required little modification. The information supplied to us to review, the sizes and detailing, was extremely comprehensive and thorough. This was the case in all communications throughout the period we worked together. The components of the kitchen arrived on site and were installed without a hitch. This is testament not only to the accuracy of the site survey that formed the basis of their setting out drawings but also to the focus and understanding oftheir installation team. The kitchen was installed whilst site operations where being undertaken around them, causing no disruption. We have now arrived at a finished project where the design sits seamlessly within our design, there have been no snagging issues and we have a very satisfied client."

"WLK provided a seamless and outstanding service when designing and installing our new kitchen. I enjoyed the process very much, thinking through practical solutions to our space and meeting the requirements of busy family life. Keith and I invented a new larder unit. It holds all our baking equipment (plus more) in drawers below and has a worktop (matching that in the kitchen) with plugs at the rear of the unit for equipment such as Magimix, bread maker, etc as well as shelves above for cookery books and larder items. We have also created a compost bin with lift up lid ingeniously accessed directly through the countertop. The Schuller kitchen we chose has weathered very well indeed since it was installed and proved very good quality. We had excellent service and are completely delighted with our kitchen. I would highly recommend WLK."

Three Things to Bring to Your First Meeting With the Kitchen PlannerAn experienced designer can save you time and money by heading off potential problems at the pass. Kitchen planners know all the tricks: how to maximize storage, smart substitutions for high-end materials, even the best local contractors for the job. But first, they need a few things from you.
1. An architectural rendering or to-scale drawing of your existing kitchen, showing the location of windows, doors, heating, plumbing lines, and electrical outlets. If you're not working with an architect, you can do it yourself with 3-D kitchen design software. (Take a free test-drive at nkba.org, the National Kitchen and Bath Association's website.)2. A detailed wish list indicating your goals for remodeling. Do you want more space? More storage? More style? A built-in dog bed? Organize it by priority, from the "must-haves" to the "in our dreams."3. An idea folder: pictures of rooms, products, materials, and architectural details that appeal to you; notes on what you like about friends' kitchens (and hate about your own); and general concepts translated from other areas of your life. Are you a neat freak? Glass-front cabinets are sleek, but you may be happier with painted doors that conceal clutter.
Five Questions to Ask Yourself: A Kitchen Personality QuizRepeat this mantra: Form follows function. Answer these questions about the way your household uses the kitchen, then see the analysis below for design ideas.
1. How many chefs usually work in the kitchen?a. Two, maybe more (including guests and kids).b. Only one person cooks at a time.c. None.
2. What's your cooking style?a. Serious: Cooking and entertaining at home is how we unwind.b. Laid-back: Dinner most nights is a casual affair; holidays are when we cook for a crowd.c. Nonexistent.
3. Who else hangs out in the kitchen, and what do they do there?a. On weekends the place is party central.b. The whole family seems to do everything but sleep and play soccer there. It's a game room, TV room, office, and kitchen all rolled into one.c. If it weren't for the beer and microwave dinners, the kitchen would get no use at all.
4. How important is easy cleanup?a. Not as important as the high-Btu burst I get from unsealed stove burners.b. The room sees too much activity for surfaces to need coddling. It has to clean up fast.c. What I really need is a recycling system for paper, plastic, and glass.
5. If you could splurge on one luxury, what would it be?a. A six-burner Viking range with electric ovens.b. A built-in computer desk where the kids can go on-line and I can pay bills.c. Ever hear of a self-cleaning microwave?
The Answers3 or more A's: Think like a pro. If it's in the budget, spend the money on a six- to eight-burner professional- style range, dedicated spice storage, and a fridge spacious enough to accommodate platters. You may also want to consider glass-front cabinets or open shelves to display dishes and glassware. Make sure you have good task lighting and stick to a flooring material like wood or old-fashioned linoleum, which are easy on the feet and easy to clean.
3 or more B's: Keep it functional, not fussy. Design in features that will simplify your daily routinea self-cleaning oven, a microwave where the kids can reach it, lots of counter and storage space. Since you rarely cook labor-intensive meals, spend your appliance dollars on an energy-efficient side-by-side refrigerator, an easy-to-clean cooktop, and sturdy cabinetry with ample space for household staples. Think in advance about ways to control the inevitable clutter from all that family activity, such as an adjustable shelving system or cubbies fitted with bins.
3 or more C's: Remember resale. Spend your makeover dollars on practical, clean-lined cabinets; good-quality basic appliances; and conveniences like a built-in recycling center. Be careful not to spend too little on the kitchen: Quality counts with homebuyers, and a shoddy new kitchen is no better than a dingy old one. It will be money well spent. In the current real estate market, you should be able to recoup between 87 and 125 percent of your investment.
Two Triangles are Better Than One: The Best Layouts for Busy Kitchens
The kitchen triangle that three-sided connection between the stove, sink, and refrigerator is practically sacrosanct in kitchen design manuals. But in today's family kitchens, often one triangle isn't enough.
1. The island workstation: Depending on the shape of your kitchen, an island can make the work triangle more efficient in a large space, it can tighten the legs of the triangle to the recommended distance of between 4 and 8 feet. In a two-cook kitchen, the island can be a pivot point in a series of triangles, especially if it includes a prep sink or a dedicated workstation, as for baking. In a compact kitchen, consider a rolling island that can be tucked against a wall when not in use.2. The zone approach: Before you settle on a layout, map out the prevalent traffic patterns in the room: for instance, from fridge to sink to stove; toaster to coffeemaker to computer desk; homework station to fridge to back door. Then set up distinct areas, or "zones," for each set of activities. For convenience and safety, try to keep zones from overlapping the refrigerator, for instance, should be at the outer corner of the cooking zone so that kids can access it without having to pass near the stove. The good news is, you should be able to recoup most of your remodeling costs at resale. The bad news: You have to pay for it now. Limit spending to no more than 15 percent of your home's market value. Then, once you've come up with a budget number, lop 20 percent off the top and squirrel it away for unexpected necessities like shoring up the floor so that new cast-iron Aga stove doesn't go crashing into the basement.

When it comes to kitchens, are you a traditionalist, or do you favor contemporary styles? Or are you somewhere in between? If you arent sure, check out each style below and see what you like best. Traditional, Transitional or Contemporary are three distinct styles to think about if you are thinking about remodeling your kitchen.
Traditional home styles are inspired by the past, but that doesnt mean a traditional home has to look outdated. Instead of dated, think classic. Traditional stylings combine practicality and functionality with eye-catching elegance and luxurious comfort. When you walk into a home thats been remodeled and styled traditionally, you should automatically feel welcomed by the warmth of soft edges and greeted by perfect symmetry and balance. Traditional stylings pair rich wood tones (like cherry, walnut and oak) with decorative elements that make a soft and graceful statement. Ornate crown moldings and heavy trim make for a classically sophisticated look. In the kitchen, youll find features such as apron-front sinks, decorative range hoods and legs added to the island. Bathroom plumbing fixtures are made from soft-toned metals like copper, bronze or brass, and the light fixtures are lush and decorative.
Transitional styling is a combination of Traditional sophistication and Contemporary simplicity. It combines luxury with minimalism to create a home that radiates tranquility. Think streamlined spaces with comfort and warmth. These spaces arent too formal or overly frilly, yet they arent completely comprised of clean profiles or straight edges. For example, a transitional kitchen might combine a paneled cabinet with more simplistic hardware. You might find shiny stainless-steel appliances resting on a darker-stained hardwood floor. Transitional style is all about finding that balance between something classic and something a little more humble its the best of both worlds. Colors are inviting and neutral and patterns are discreet in order to create a true place of peacefulness. Instead of using eye-catching colors, textures are relied upon to create visual interest. Transitional style uses a mixture of matte and polished finishes as well as leather furniture, wooden frames and other tactile materials and features. Clean lines mixed with a pinch of luxury and ornate styling create a soothing and serene transitional home.
Contemporary styling truly embodies the less is more mantra. With strong, simple lines and minimal accessories, a contemporary look focuses more on the space than what adorns it. For example, you wont see traditional curves or extravagantly scalloped trim work in a contemporary home think smooth profiles, lines, planes and sharp angles. This look is all about celebrating the space with natural light, simple geometric forms and unadorned floors. Popular flooring options for a contemporary-styled home include bamboo, stone or ceramic tile. In this type of home, emphasis is placed on strong architecture and statement pieces such as modern chandeliers and oversized artwork. And even though contemporary style is more minimalistic, it isnt without its glitz. Kitchen and bath fixtures shine via polished metals like chrome, steel and glass. The contemporary style is perfect for those who yearn for an open and airy home, organization and very little fuss.

Theres a lot to consider when it comes to planning your kitchen design. Where do you even start? Gathering some inspiration in a photo gallery is always a good starting point, as looking at different kitchen designs often brings up ideas you havent even thought of yet.Browse Photos of Kitchen Designs for Inspiration and Collect Your IdeasYou can browse through photos of all kinds of kitchen styles, layouts and sizes on Houzz to get started before jumping into any design software or contacting a local professional for help. Heres a few considerations to keep in mind when planning your kitchen.1. What Makes a Good Kitchen Design, and Why is it Important? For starters, you want to find a balance between aesthetics and function. You may have heard of the kitchen work triangle, which refers to the space between your fridge, sink and stove. You want everything within easy reach when youre working in the kitchen and look beautiful at the same time. Its a good idea to take note of both when browsing our photo gallery.2. Consider Your Space to Determine Your Kitchen LayoutFirstly, consider the space you have, and the limitations that come with it. Do you have a small kitchen and need to maximise your workspace and storage? Can you allow yourself some more space and a big island with seating? Are you designing your kitchen from scratch or renovating an existing design? Which appliances do you already own and what are their measurements? Are there windows you need to take into consideration when planning cabinets? How do kitchen, living and dining areas connect?
Depending on your space and needs, you want to use a shape that suits you. U, G, or L-shaped kitchen, with or without island or peninsula? Know your dimensions, plan cabinetry carefully and consider the placement of your appliances. You dont want to end up with a finished design, only for your significant other to question where the fridge is supposed to go. Consider from the start where your fridge, oven, microwave and sink goes to save yourself from starting again from scratch - remember the kitchen work triangle!
You also want to plan the layout of your cabinets. Maybe youre planning for a pantry and can do with less storage space in your kitchen, so that your design can be one without upper or lower cabinets for a different look. A corner cabinet can be a smart storage solution if you want to keep the look clean and simple.
You also want to consider colour and finishes of cabinets, countertops and splashbacks. Which colour do you want your cupboards to be? Simple, timeless white or rather making a statement in black? Maybe rather a rustic wood? Also consider the colour of your floor - if you have dark floors, you may want to keep cabinets lighter. You could also go for an all-white look and choose black appliances for contrast.
Once you know which style you fancy, dont forget how you will be using the space. You want to keep cooking in mind, as well as how easy to clean and maintain the space will be. How many cooks do you need to accommodate? Do you have kids around? How much storage do you need? Maybe you want to go for open shelves rather than cabinets and allow for easy reach of key items you use when cooking. Again - remember the triangle!
Lastly, choose lighting that both enhances the look of your kitchen as well as your cooking performance, providing light in all the right places.
Once you are ready to hire a pro, our directory will help you find one, no matter where you are. So whether you're looking for an Interior Designer in Melbourne or an Architect in Sydney, you can be sure to find a qualified expert for the job!

For literally thousands of years, ponds have been one of the signature features of the most elegant gardens in the world. While a pond is one of the defining elements of a garden that has been created with every attention given toward aesthetics, there are some significant engineering concerns involved where the installation and maintenance of a garden pond is concerned. This website provides extensive information on both the aesthetic and practical elements involved in the creation and maintenance of garden ponds and contains material which will prove useful to those who are just beginning their journey as a gardener as well as to those who are very experienced in the endeavor.
A garden pond, when created correctly, can provide a touch of elegance that can last for literally generations. As is the case with any artistic endeavor, the means of creation dictates the success of the result.
How to Build a PondIt takes more than a shovel to build a water pond! One must engage in some sophisticated planning, be certain that they have the right supplies on hand and that the area chosen is up to the task. One must have a good grasp of the various tasks involved to ensure that their creation is exactly what they had in mind.
Fish PondThese are one of the most elegant and, frankly, one of the most enjoyable additions that anyone can make to their yard. Installing an outdoor pond allows one to keep fish in an environment which is as close as possible to their natural home and which allows for one to get truly creative with the design.
Koi PondThese are one of the most impressive examples of the fish pond. They benefit from the presence of these large, beautiful animals. The fish themselves need special considerations paid to their care and the water must be properly filtered and circulated so that they can enjoy a healthy environment.
Pond LinerOutdoor ponds would eventually be a dry hole without a liner! From concrete to rubber to more advanced plastics, there are an incredible amount of liner materials available on the market. Learn about the various liners available and how they can help one create the garden of one's dreams!
Pond PlantsOutdoor ponds are an ecosystem in and of them self. Installing plants helps balance out this ecosystem. Even where fish are the principal feature, plants provide a place for them to hide, nourishment and a way to keep the environment clean of toxic wastes that build up.
Pond AlgaeAll water ponds are susceptible to becoming infiltrated by this pesky plant but there are many ways in which a skillful owner can get rid of it for good and enjoy crystal clear water. From introducing competing plants to installing sophisticated UV filters, algae can be beaten but, if it's let go too long, one may be facing a long battle.
Pond PumpA water pump is the heart of any backyard pond. These are the devices that power the filters, the waterfalls and fountains and which provide for the proper circulation of the water. Installing these devices properly is necessary to ensure that they function to their highest level of performance and to ensure that the water is kept healthy and safe.
Pond FountainA fountain may seem like a complex addition but, between the many different variations available on the market and the surprisingly easy installation, it's a wonder that all garden ponds aren't supplied with one. They help add air to the water and add a touch of class. Fountains make a fantastic feature for all garden!
Pond FilterProper filtration is an important requirement. These needs vary depending on what type of garden pond one has constructed. There are several different types of water filters on the market. Understanding the basic workings of these devices is an absolute necessity.
Pond UV FilterOutdoor ponds may be an ancient and enduring symbol of an elegant home but new technology has been enlisted in the fight to keep the waters clean. UV filters destroy algae by attacking it right at the DNA, rendering it unable to multiply and gradually turning turbid waters into crystal clear habitats for plants and fish.
