California Plumbing – Imperial Beach, CA – Yelp

    - October 5, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

    60

I came home from the studio, pulled my car in backwards and noticed a bunch of water falling off of my garage door. First Thought: Woah Did it Rain? Second Thought: Uh Oh. I called a plumber that's been to my house before, after I called and texted my brother a million times, and with the help of an iPhone, pictures, video and my brother, we got the water to stop flooding my garage. Unfortunately my previous plumber was booked up for 6 days - so I asked for a referral and he gave me Aaron's name, number and told me he was a really good guy. So I called Aaron. Not only was he incredibly nice, but he coordinated with me and came out within just 3 hours of our conversation. He installed the entire unit by himself, handled the gas and the water, hauled out my old water heater, cleaned up all of his tools and equipment and also looked at my bathroom sink. My hair likes to shed.Just overall a freaking incredible experience. If you need help, want a very professional and friendly plumber who communicates thoroughly - give Aaron a call. Just a complete rock star and you won't regret it.Shower Time!

I built an outdoor shower and CA plumbing came to do the final hook up. Everything was as it should be: on time, prepared, professional, pre-agreed on price and excellent workmanship.Gentleman was done quickly and tested his work. I will only use them in the future.Bathroom remodel is next.

I have used California Plumbing on a number of jobs including retail, ground-up multifamily, and residential. Their ability to accomplish the task at hand, along with there attention to detail, professionalism, and competitive pricing is what sets them apart from the rest. Aaron Hall is an intelligent business owner that understands the importance of honesty and integrity. Great company all around.

Working in the Real Estate industry, I frequently need a good plumber to refer to our clients. Aaron's availability is incredible, his reports are thorough and he is easy to reach by phone for any questions and clarification. His professionalism is remarkable and I'm happy to dial his number for any of my personal or business plumbing needs. He's our go to plumber now.

These guys are consummate professionals. Had a gas leak at the house and after the city shut it off (and said "good luck")Aaron and his crew were there within hours. They took care of everything. Permits, scheduling inspections, calling SDGE to get the gas back on, everything. Nestor and Jaime were friendly and well versed in all aspects plumbing. These guys are my new plumber. Added bonus: clean trucks, clean uniforms, extra careful to keep a clean worksite.

Aaron and his crew saved the day! I had a different plumber come first and he cost me hundreds of dollars in electric and plumbing parts that i did NOT need! I should have called Aaron first! He completely fixed the problem I was having at my salon. They are knowledgeable, friendly, prompt! They assisted me early in the morning to accommodate for my customers later in the day. Thank you so much!!!

If you are in need of a great plumber, than give California Plumbing a call. Aaron and his crew are the best plumbing group I have ever come into contact with. He really puts customer service and customer satisfaction as a top priority which is hard to find in Companies now a days. Their response time is quick, they show up when they say they will, and they are very knowledgeable in their line of work. I was adding a addition to my home and moving my whole kitchen and my drain was going to be below my existing drain pipe in my island. Aaron and his crew worked hard and solved the problem that needed to be done. He showed up when it was time for the city inspection to make sure all was good. There is no doubt in my mind that if a plumbing issue comes up I will only be calling California Plumbing. Best service, best price. Thank you Aaron and your whole staff who helped on my project!

These guys are honest & straight forward. I called first thing in the morning and was told they could get to me that same morning. The service person ( Jaime) called and let me know he would be arriving a half an hour ahead of time. He fixed my issue ( removing a stuck tub drain ring) right away. He took the extra step of looking underneath the house to make sure everything was draining okay. He was super courteous and professional, cleaning up the work area afterwards. No upsells. They stuck to the program and earned a loyal customer. AAA+

Been struggling with low water pressure since we moved in. Finally decided to buy a booster pump. Got in touch with Aaron who helped out with selecting a good model and set up a consultation for install. One of his guys came by and diagnosed he underlying problem was with our beotron water filter. Saved me a bunch of cash and found an issue that 2 other plumbers had no idea about. Thanks so much, guys!

About a month ago , I had to replace the water heater and get a few quotes but the price was to much , so i went to yelp to get a the service that i need it and i wasn't dissapointed california plumbing was reasonable and fair with the price and they make a marvelous job satisfying the customer and they were fast too, if the employees of this company are as nice as ben they probably have the best business in san diego or they will get there .thankyou guys , I'll keep using your services on the future.

These guys are awesome I had two plumbers out one that was here for literally 2 hours both separate company's said oh we can't get it maybe you have a broken line mind you it was a clogged bath tub I called up Aaron they showed up on time and I'm not kidding you the dude was here for 10 min and cleared the line yes thank you Jesus I highly recommend these guys and we will be using them on our coming up projects !

Extremely easy going and knowledgeable crew. Work with these guys once and they'll become your go-to plumbing crew for jobs big and small. Give them a buzz - you won't be disappointed!!

I have been using Aaron and California Plumbing for a while and every time I am more impressed. Jaime and Aaron have completely re-piped one of my apartment buildings and have replaced old cracked cast iron pipes in my house. Every time they are professional and on time. I would use anyone else. California Plumbing is my go to crew if I need anything done when it comes to plumbing. You should hesitate to give them a call they will get it done on time and with quality work.

I sent a message on Yelp after hours and Aaron got back to me right at 7AM the next day for a same day appointment! We had some time conflicts and ended up having to reschedule for the day after, but Jaime arrived at our house promptly and was able to get hot water back to our previously unused guest shower and master bathtub without any fuss. Prices were fair ($92 an hour plus the price of parts), the job was done quickly, and everyone I spoke to was professional and very friendly. My only gripe is that in my original message I had mentioned I was missing a screw for one of my fixtures, which I reminded Jaime about once he got here, yet he was unable to replace it because he didn't have a proper replacement in the truck, nor did he tell me exactly what size/thread/etc of screw to go out and buy. Jaime did offer to put a sealant on the hole as a temporary fix, but it didn't cover the entirety of the exposed area. So although I now have hot water, I won't be able to use it until I find a replacement screw, lest I want water to drip into my wall.Editing my initial review to say that Jaime came back ASAP to not only replace the screw but also touch up the sealant around my faucets after I voiced my concern about it free of charge. You can definitely tell that customer satisfaction is one of their top priorities. I'd recommend these guys to anyone!

Fast and efficient! These guys called to tell me they could even come SOONER than expected. In and out in under an hour with a full toilet re-set and seal.

We needed a plumber out to our house immediately after we were woken up to a flooded home after a pipe seemed to have burst under our kitchen sink. Aaron responded quickly and fixed the situation. The service was reasonable and Aaron was super professional. He delivered our broken parts to our house when insurance told us they needed them for evaluation. Aaron even spoke to our home owner insurance company on the phone and gave them details as to what happened so we could get the proper assessments done for the water damage our home endured. Aaron will forever be our go to plumber. We were very satisfied with his service!

As noted with other reviews, Aaron was prompt to call back and schedule a service call within the hour after I placed my call. Ben arrived on time and was courteous and knowledgeable about the issue at hand. All was done quickly and professionally which is all that I could ask for.

Benji was on right on time, explained very clearly to me what he needed to do and why to clear my plugged up kitchen drain. He had to snake my drain through my laundry room and in the process of moving things around noticed my dryer was not vented properly. Not only did he take care of my drain issue, he also fixed my dryer vent before he left. I was impressed with his professionalism, politeness and thoroughness. I will definitely call California Plumbing again and ask for Benji if I have anymore plumbing issues!Sidney H.

Very professional and prompt. They installed a new toilet and faucet for us, they couldn't find the water shut off valve but worked through the problem and finished the job.

Thank you California plumbing I have a rental property that had a pipe leak and you guys were out there immediately. I couldn't get anybody on the phone and I found you guys on yelp.$230 for 9 o'clock at night I can't believe it. Thank you Aaron five stars to you

Demolition Movie Review & Film Summary (2016) | Roger Ebert

    - October 5, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

Go through hell and look cool doing it. Thats the vibe Igot from the poster for "Demolition," which uses a neatly quartered (with onesegment slightly askew) portrait of its male lead, Jake Gyllenhaal, sportingexpensive shades and wearing expensive headphones. Is that an overly simplisticreading of the actual film? Yes. But its also true that the movie, costarringNaomi Watts and directed by Jean-Marc Valle, doesnt exactly shy away fromthose semiotics.

Demolition opens with Gyllenhaals Davis Mitchell and wifeJulia (Heather Lind) driving around New York City and having what seems to be atetchy power-couple morning. Hes preoccupied, shes frustrated, and theyre ona phone call with her parents. The viewer cant get a read on the marriage:its strained is a good guess, but whether its truly crummy or justcircumstantially challenged is impossible to tell. Speculation becomes mootwhen an auto accident leaves Julia dead and Davis without a scratch.

Davis is zombied out. He cant get an M&Ms bag from thehospitals vending machine, and he writes an uncharacteristically confessionalletter to the vending machines parent company. He cant cry at his wifesfuneral. His father-in-law Phil (Chris Cooper), whos also his boss at afinancial shark tank, advises him to take apart his life and reexamine it.Davis, whos also found that he can no longer lie effectively, takes thiscounsel literally, and begins to physically dismantle various appliances. Andhe continues pouring whats left of his heart out to vending machine customerservice, whose human form is that of Naomi Watts.

If Davis prior life was a cold slate-grey corporate mess, the life of Watts' Karen is a lukewarm, pot-haze suffused suburban one, completewith a teen son (Judah Lewis) whos a handful of rock and roll attitude. You can tell theextent to which this whole movies narrative and its attendant lessons are big timebits of boomer wish fulfillment contrivance by the fact that it offers up, inthis day and age, a fifteen-year-old whos obsessively into Eric Burdon, DavidBowie, and vintage Free. The kid, of course, becomes an eager accomplice asDavis, looking for answers, takes down his entire house. In which he does, indeed, discover an important clue.

The yuppie-finding-his-soul scenario is a very old and notparticularly compelling one, and the fact that this film borrows elements fromRegarding Henry, American Beauty, Saul Bellows Herzog, and the JimCarrey Liar, Liar, for heavens sake, does not exactly redound to itsbenefit.

However, Valle directs with no small amount of verve andenergy, as if he genuinely believes he can bring something new to thisparticular table. The actors show similar commitment, with Gyllenhaal conveyinginner emptiness and/or confusion in a smartly understated way. While Watts isreliably vulnerable, its Judah Lewis as her son Chris who does the heavieremotional lifting. The scenario does contain a couple of unexpected stings inits tale, which almost makes the inevitable redemption payoff play a littleless pat than it might have under different circumstances. But not THAT muchless pat.

‘Demolition’ Movie Review – Rolling Stone

    - October 5, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

When humor is served black, they call it dramedy. When it's done in this movie, I call it indigestible.Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Davis Mitchell, a sleazy Wall Street bankerwho can't feel anything when his unfaithful wife (Heather Lind) is hurt in a car crash. At the hospital, just before she dies, Davis tries to buy a bag of Peanut M&Ms from a vending machine. When the bag gets stuck, Davis is crushed. He begins writing letters to the company in charge of maintaining the machine. "I think you deserve the whole story," he says. Get it? The letters are a way of expressing his grief.

Davis can't let his emotions out. His boss and father-in-law (Chris Cooper) cries like a baby. Not Davis. He opens up a bit to Karen Moreno (Naomi Watts), a lonely mom who works at a vending machine company. It's an appalling plot contrivance that made me want to write a letter to the producers. And there are more, many more.

Davis stays numb until he decides to demolish things. His father-in-law gave him the idea by saying, "If you want to fix something, you have to take it apart and put it back together." So there goes Jake, first by quitting his job and joining a wrecking crew and then by taking apart his posh suburban home with a sledgehammer, often while grooving to classic rock suggested by Karen's snarky son, Chris (Judah Lewis). Are you laughing yet?

Gyllenhaal does his best to find the fun and the feeling in Brian Sipe's quirk-riddled script. But director Jean-Marc Vallee (Dallas Buyers Club, Wild) keeps pounding the point that Davis must destroy his old self to build a new one. It would be funny if it wasn't so profoundly unprofound.

All-Time Favorite Basement Ideas | Houzz

    - October 4, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

As you get ready to take the remodeling plunge, take time to map out your basement layout and determine all its separate functions. Think about what your family needs the space for, and pick a layout that best suits those needs. Once you finalize your plan, determine whether built-ins are worth pursuing. In a vast, undefined space, they're an easy way to differentiate one space from another the extra storage space doesn't hurt either. Finally, decide how you're going to fill the room with furniture. Since there's so much space to cover, picking the right pieces is a little more challenging than usual, so look at other basement design ideas to get a feel for what to look for when shopping. What are basements used for?Every family is different, so when looking for finished basement ideas make sure you pinpoint how you spend your time and then cater to those hobbies and interests. If you host parties often or are beer and wine aficionados, focus your basement remodel on creating a home bar or wine cellar. If you're looking for a kid-friendly hangout, become the neighborhood hot spot with a massive family and media room combo. Give the guy in your family the ultimate escape with a man cave, game room and home gym, or be practical above all else by adding extra bedrooms and another bathroom. Should I use built-ins in my basement design? With such large spaces, basements can hard to define; clever built-ins can help clarify room divisions while simultaneously aiding organization. For the ultimate video game/movie hub, install a custom entertainment center, complete with bookshelves and cabinets for storing small electronic accessories, movies and books. For those family movie nights, add a wet bar that includes a microwave and mini fridge for popcorn and beverages. A craft room with a built-in counter and shelves, or a long booth or bench for extra seating are also popular basement ideas. The options are endless, so consult a designer or builder to see what works for your basement remodel. How should I decorate my basement? If you take a look at most basement decorating ideas, youll see that typically bigger is better. Unlike other rooms where space might be tight, basement designs usually have room to spare, so your furniture can be oversized and chunky to help fill them up. Sectionals are a great way to avoid an empty-looking room, and they provide plenty of seating for when guests come to visit. Be sure to add other common living room pieces like armchairs, side tables and coffee tables to fully complete the look. If your family loves games, add a pool table, foosball or poker table, or include an oversized table for regular board games. Other excellent basement ideas include giving your kids their own corner with an indoor playhouse or swing, or creating your ultimate getaway with a daybed and bookshelves for reading, napping and relaxing.

2017 Average Cost to Finish a Basement + Remodel, Bathroom …

    - October 4, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

Finished basements can be the sites of stunning achievements or apocalyptic home disasters. Problems there can significantly decrease the value of your home, while cost-effective finishing work can add livable square footage, vastly increasing its value.

Whether you're thinking of remodeling your basement or you need to fix leaking or sinking foundations, the cost of your work will vary based on your geographical location, type of soil, kind of repair or enhancement and complexity or amount of work needed.

While a remodel generally happens after a basement has already been finished, you may find that you want to remodel your new, unfinished basement. Remodeling your basement before refinishing it can often save you money.

Installing all of the necessary plumbing and electrical work while walls and floors are unfinished will result in savings.Starting from scratch doesnt require demolition, which can save you around $2,000. Framing may be necessary to define rooms and spaces. System upgrades usually call for minor expansions to the HVAC and electrical systems, but not adding plumbing. The bulk of the cost, however, is in flooring and finishing. After wrapping things up with carpeting, drywall, and ceiling material, you can expect to pay anywhere from $6,500 to $15,500.

Your basement probably houses some of your home's work engines: a boiler, hot water heater, furnace, maybe an extensive network of pipes carrying water or sewage. It's the area that's extremely susceptible to water damage and leakage. Whatever work you do, you probably will want to include waterproofing as well.

Converting a finished basement from a general room to a full-service guest suite involves all of the above and then some. After adding or remodeling a bathroom, a kitchenette, cabinetry, HVAC and electrical upgrades, etc., you can easily spend $20,500 to $50,000.

Some houses only have partial basements. Extending your foundation is an involved job and can cost from $10,000 to $30,000 on top of the above estimates.

The finishing touches you choose, such as ceiling, flooring, and other features, will add to the final costs. When designing your basement, remember to factor in these features to the budget.

    Timing

If time is critical, consider a basement finishing kit. A finishing kit has insulated wall panels, and some include a walkable flooring surface and ceiling material for DIY installation. Depending on the size of your basement, these kits can be installed in a weekend. However, the floor wont be carpeted, the walls wont be painted, and there will be no electrical or plumbing. Other features such as doors, trim work, and more also need to be added.

The cost of a finishing kit ranges from around $4.75 sq. ft. for just wall panels that you install yourself to $30,000 for the walls, ceiling, and floor installed by a professional team.

    Your Home's Systems

One solution is to paint ceiling pipes the same color as the ceiling to hide them -- or in bright colors to make them interesting. Placing a water heater in a closet is a consideration, but be sure to check local codes before doing this. Large systems like boilers and HVAC units are not so easily to tuck away.

Professionals agree the utility room should not be finished. The ventilation and drainage requirements for these systems are very specific, and you need easy access to the systems for inspection and repair. Consult a professional before settling on a design to prevent any issues from occurring down the road.

    Framing - $1 sq ft.

    Drywall - $1.50 sq. ft.

    Ceilings - $1 - $6 sq. ft.

Pipes and ductwork often hangs lower than the joists. This makes a smooth ceiling impossible. Many repurposed urban spaces mask these features by painting them and the ceiling the same color. A sprayer can be rented for about $100 a day, or you can hire a pro for around $300 to $500.

Drop ceilings are overcoming their bad reputations with acrylic panels that imitate other materials or have attractive patterns. They generally cost between $2.00 to $6.00 per square foot.

Finally, tongue and groove wood such as pine looks great and is lightweight, making it perfect for a warmth-adding ceiling. Expect to pay between $1 and $3 per square foot for the paneling.

    Floors - $300 - $5,000

    Basement Bathroom Installation

You can fit a full bathroom with tub/shower combination in a room that measures 40-square feet. However, on average, a smaller bath (with just a stand-up shower) or a half-bath usually needs to be about 30-square feet for comfort and functionality. Depending on the basement space and layout, you may be able to go with a larger 60-square feet or more bathroom space. Creating bathroom with a separate water closet may require 100-square feet or more.

For a professional to do the full bathroom installation, expect costs to range from $10,000 to $15,000. Tackling the full installation on your own can cut costs approximately in half.

    Additional Rooms and Features

The final touches for a finished basement can make it as amazing as any room in the house. Recessed lighting keeps headspace as high as possible while crown molding adds a luxurious touch. Wall-to-wall carpeting or hardwood floors add comfort and warmth to the living space. Paint and wallpaper can add style while built-in storage adds function.

Finally, if the space is too big to be a single room but too small to be multiple rooms, consider visually dividing the room with a counter. It can be lower for children to use as a craft table, or it can be bar height to become a standing desk.

    Permits

Failure to obtain proper permits can result removing (demo-ing) any current finishing work or remodeling already installed. You could also face fines. A stop work order may be issued, which usually causes double the fees when you do, eventually, apply for the permit(s). If you have to file an insurance claim and cant produce any permits, the insurance company may deny the claim. Finishing a basement without permits also can affect the home's resale value.

Permits for most jobs cost about $50.

    Foundations

Old homes may suffer from sagging foundation beams as a result of shifting ground or decay and deterioration of the original building materials. Foundation beams can be raised and shored up successfully, but the right tools, like a pneumatic jack, are essential. Depending on how much the foundation beam must be raised, this job may require several days of incremental steps to complete - which means increased labor costs. Hiring professionals is the best option for this job. Expect costs to run about $10,000 for repairs like a shifted foundation.

Pillars are a common element basement finishes and remodels need to work around. The basement pillars most likely provide integral structural support for your home. Do not move them without consulting a professional contractor. Alterations to the structure of your basement or foundation should be done by a professional prior to refinishing.

    Water Leakage

Waterproofing comes in a variety of techniques. It depends on the source of the water and its severity. On average, basement waterproofing costs around $7,000, though minor waterproofing can cost as little as $300 to $500. Be sure to get multiple quotes and details about the job. Have your basement checked before beginning any remodel.

Basically we would cut out in front of your garage. Then add 2 inches on top of your entire driveway. Then as we meet your garage we would use the cut out to bring it level with your garage. This costs about $1.50 per square foot.

If there are a lot of cracks or it is rutted out or there are dips in the driveway, that means the base is bad. We will then need to rip it out and install a new stone base to give a solid starting point.

We understand most people want the lowest cost or to at least have confidence you ate getting good value for the money your spending.

Of course each job has its own set of variables that influence the price. Give us a call or use our contact form and we will be happy to get your a quote tailored to your exact needs. Thanks WIllie

    Asphalt vs. Concrete Driveways

    In this article, you'll learn

So youre in the market for a new driveway or perhaps youre building a new home and need to decide how to pave your driveway. Either way, youll probably have two traditional options to choose from- concrete or asphalt. They are similar but have key differences you should consider before making a decision. These considerations include aesthetics, climate, maintenance, cost, and restrictions.

Both concrete and asphalt must have well compacted bases of gravel before application. Both take time to cure before they can be driven on, although concrete takes several days while asphalt takes several hours. In addition, both are made from the same general material- stone and sand. However, the difference comes from the adhesive.

In asphalt the adhesive is tar and in concrete its cement.

These two substrates give asphalt and concrete their unique characteristics. They also affect costs, durability and maintenance. Tar, while more inexpensive than cement is softer and degrades easier and faster. However, with proper maintenance this negative attribute of asphalt can be diminished.

As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This is true for driveways as well. Some people like the look and concept of the driveway being an extension of the road and therefore have asphalt driveways. The differences between asphalt and concrete are as different as black and white, literally. However, there are some different things that can be done to both asphalt and concrete to get away from the traditional black or off-white colors.

As a general rule of thumb, concrete is an easier material to work with to get different finishes. Concrete can be stained or tinted to an array of colors and can be stained differently in a single driveway to get unique patterns. Concrete can also be stamped into different designs, etched or engraved to get different looks and it can have different finishes such as brushed or exposed aggregate. All these different options can create a plethora of unique options when designing your driveway.

Asphalt is more limited. Since asphalt must be rolled and compressed, there is little in the way of unique finishes. Moreover, until recently, there was little option in color apart from standard black. However, there are now tints that can be added at the end of as a sealant or even integral coloring that is added during mixing.

For those who live in areas that have either very cold winters or very warm summers, climate can be an important consideration. Concrete has the tendency to crack and suffer from frost heaving in cold and freezing winters. Furthermore, salt used for ice melting can create pits in concrete leaving blotches across the driveway. Alternatively, asphalt has issues in hotter climates. The tar in asphalt can become soft in the high heat of summer and can become tacky and even deform in some cases. It is important to talk to a reputable contractor about the effects the local climate will have on both asphalt and concrete prior to finalizing any decisions.

There are definite differences when considering maintenance. After about six months to a year after installation, asphalt driveways should be sealed. Asphalt should then be subsequently sealed every three-five years afterwards. This can be done by anyone and does not require any special tools or machinery. Sealing the asphalt will extend the life of the driveway, which when properly maintained may last upwards of 30 years.

Concrete driveways do not necessarily need to be sealed to last upwards of 50 years. However, sealing a concrete driveway can preserve the look and finish. Concrete driveways will stain easier than asphalt (although sealing will help) and will require a degreaser to remove any oil based stains that may occur.

Both asphalt and concrete driveway cracks can be repaired. However, asphalt cracks are easier to repair and blend into the original. Meanwhile, concrete repairs are more obvious due to weathering. An added plus with asphalt is that it can be resurfaced fairly inexpensively leaving a brand new top coat if the old layer falls into disrepair, which is impossible for concrete.

Ignoring any maintenance costs, asphalt is generally much cheaper to install than concrete. On average, the cost per square foot for asphalt will run between $2.50 to $4.00. Fluctuations in crude oil prices can cause fluctuations in asphalt prices but the price will remain around this range. Concrete, on the other hand, can run between $4.00 to $6.00 per square foot for basic installation and can cost more depending on different finishes and detail. Its not unheard of to have a stained concrete driveway with a smooth finish cost over $15.00 per square foot.

Finally, before you get too far, you may want to check with any local building codes to see if there are any specifications. For those that live in a development, your HOA may have very specific restrictions on color, finish or even type of driveway material you can use.
