CLINTON, Mo. -- Heather Shinn's home in Clinton, Mo. had turned into a full-blown construction site. That's why she was smiling.
"That's absolutely wonderful," Shinn said as she watched four men hard at work re-roofing the the modest home she shares with her young daughter.
The first time FOX 4 Problem Solvers met Shinn half her roof was missing. The roofer she had hired, Travis Hurd, had taken nearly all her money but disappeared after dropping off materials and tearing off some shingles.
"I don't have any more money to pay someone else to do it now," Shinn told Problem Solvers.
That's why FOX 4 Problem Solvers called Wyatt Zucca of Zucca & Daughters & Sons Roofing of Blue Springs. Problem Solvers knew Zucca had a big heart and a solid reputation. All we had to do was explain Heather Shinn's predicament and Zucca was on board.
"You called and you had a need and you had a lady who had been taken advantage of, so we wanted to step up and help," Zucca said.
It was an offer of help so generous that Shinn, who works full-time and goes to school, never expected.
"I didn't think that someone would want to step up and do the rest of it for free," she said.
Zucca rearranged his schedule to re-roof the house just a few days after we called, realizing that Shinn's roof was so bad that she was seeing damage inside her home every time it rained.
Shinn's dad Bill Shinn was on hand to welcome Zucca and his crew.
"After the last several weeks I had kind of given up hope on finding some good people out there, but you managed to do it," Bill Shinn said.
By the end of a very long day, Heather Shinn's home had a new roof and she had renewed confidence that not all contractors are just after your money; some actually care about your home. You just have to find the right one.
There was more good news at the Olathe home of Joe and Stacey Brashears. After a FOX 4 Problem Solvers' story about how the Brashears had paid a company to install a new fence but never got one, we received several offers of help.
Good guys John Fulkers and Andrew Bush offered to complete the job for free.
They were concerned that Joe Brashears, who is fighting cancer, was now going to have to put up the fence by himself. Fulkers and Bush don't own a fencing company, but both men said they've built fences before and aren't afraid of hard work.
"I don't even have words other than to say 'thank you,'" said Stacey Brashears.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Christian McCaffrey's only direct work with the Carolina Panthers since last month's rookie camp came Saturday ... at a bowling alley.
Yes, the eighth pick of the NFL draft was allowed to hit pins with other Carolina players against the staff at head coach Ron Rivera's charity fundraiser, but he can't take hits from them until June 14.
And Rivera called the league office just to make sure that was all right.
The do-it-all running back out of Stanford falls under the antiquated rule that prohibits draft picks from participating in offseason workouts other than rookie camp until their school year ends.
They can't even be in the team facility.
It basically penalizes players who attend schools on a quarter system, which typically end much later than those on a semester system.
It doesn't matter that McCaffrey didn't enroll for the final quarter, either.
The rule still applies.
That means McCaffrey's first work on the field with the Carolina veterans will be June 14, the second of a three-day mandatory minicamp.
He'll get exactly two days with them before taking five weeks off before training camp.
"It sucks," McCaffrey told the team website during Rivera's event. "It's really tough."
It's a rule designed to encourage NFL prospects to finish their school year and graduate if that is their choice, without the pressure of having to attend team workouts.
But it doesn't take into account players like McCaffrey, who chose well before the draft not to enroll for the final quarter. It also doesn't take into account players who have no chance to finish their degree on time because they leave school a year or more before their academic work can be completed.
Rivera would like to see the rule adjusted.
"I just think if a young man on his own is not going to enroll, don't hold that against him," he said after Monday's workout. "You don't know who you're going to get through the draft. If those young men decided on their own, then they're being punished for something that is their choice.
"It really only hurts the player. He's got to come in [late] and learn and grow and fit in."
The Panthers have been through this before, most recently with 2015 first-round pick Shaq Thompson. They are doing the same things with McCaffrey that they did with the former Washington linebacker, keeping him up to date as best as possible through Skype.
"That's the rule," Rivera said. "Until something changes, we've got to follow it."
McCaffrey told the team website that he has been working out in Denver during the day, watching Rockies games and reviewing the playbook at night with running backs coach Jim Skipper.
"He'll quiz me over the phone and then I'll go over everything, and he'll tell me what to learn for the next day," McCaffrey said.
"You can still get the plays down and get good training when you're home, but nothing will ever compete with actually getting the reps on the field, being with the guys."
The time McCaffrey has missed has been spent getting second-round draft pick Curtis Samuel and other rookies more up to speed. Like McCaffrey, Samuel plays multiple positions.
Samuel is a slot receiver first and a running back second. McCaffrey is a running back first and then a slot receiver.
Both are dynamic additions to an offense trying to evolve to depend less on quarterback Cam Newton as a runner.
What McCaffrey can't develop over the phone or on Skype is camaraderie. He got a taste of that at Rivera's charity event to benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte.
McCaffrey tweeted Sunday that he can't wait to get back on the field.
Then, on Monday morning, as the Panthers returned to the field for voluntary workouts, McCaffrey returned to Denver on a plane.
"It was good to see him, too," Rivera said. "He got to spend time with the team more than anything else. That's the one thing he also misses, that chance to bond."

Field YatesESPN Insider
Field Yates has previous experience interning with the New England Patriots on both their coaching and scouting staffs. A graduate of Wesleyan University (CT), he is a regular contributor to ESPN Boston's Patriots coverage and ESPN Insider.
Starting a little later this month, the NFL takes something of a small hiatus as coaches and front-office personnel get off the grid to recharge before training camps begin. The work doesn't entirely evaporate though, as NFL teams still have orders of business to tend to.
Thinking bigger picture, here is a look at a key decision each NFL team can see on its horizon and that will unquestionably become a topic of conversation over the next two months:
AFC East | AFC North| AFC South | AFC West NFC East | NFC North | NFC South | NFC West
Some offensive line business. Let's package this into two topics, as both pertain to the O-line. First, Dallas must sort through and find the best options to play the left guard and right tackle spots. La'El Collins is getting some offseason work at right tackle, but he could stay at guard and leave just one spot open. If he plays right tackle, there's a competition at left guard, which includes former first-round pick Jonathan Cooper. The second order of business is paying guard Zack Martin, perhaps the NFL's best player at the position, who could be an unrestricted free agent in 2019. Dallas has said a long-term extension for Martin is a priority, so don't expect him to hit the market.
Finding the ground game. This isn't so much a decision as it is a resolution of internal options. The Giants' offense has immense potential in its passing game, but the ground game is less certain -- on paper. Does Paul Perkins, a 2016 fifth-round pick, emerge as the lead back? He appears to be the best fit after the Giants didn't aggressively address the position this offseason. New York also has Shane Vereen, while Shaun Draughn was added in free agency and Wayne Gallman was picked on Day 3 of the draft. For now, Perkins seems like the lead back.
Figuring out Wentz's long-term weapons. The Eagles have built an impressive stable of weapons for second-year quarterback Carson Wentz -- this season. Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith were among the early additions through free agency, while Philly recently acquired LeGarrette Blount on a one-year deal. Jeffery's contract is also for only one year, while Smith's contract is a year-to-year proposition. Plus, Jordan Matthews enters the final year of his rookie contract. The takeaway? While the Eagles' offense should be much better this season, it's incumbent upon general manager Howie Roseman to identify which of Wentz's weapons are integral parts of the future beyond 2017 and get them locked into deals.

OTTUMWA The initial report from a consulting firms May site visit has the county wondering what additional work will have to precede the replacement of windows in the courthouse.
In March the county board of supervisors agreed to have Chairman Jerry Parker contact Victor Amoroso of A and J Associates for recommendations on replacing windows in the courthouse. There are certain things we can and cannot do, said Parker, because the building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Amoroso and architect Douglas Steinmetz examined the windows in May. Parker told supervisors last week that Steinmetz and Amoroso found some things they thought we might want to address before we do the windows.
Two concerns that Parker mentioned were sand in the fifth floor front window and sporadic fire protection.
Sand in the fifth floor front window may indicate that the masonry is pulling apart, Steinmetzs report says. Photographs and observations made at the time of the site visit were inconclusive though there does appear to be an area of missing exterior mortar, Steinmetz said.
According to the report, exploratory construction will be needed to evaluate the situation. In addition, the missing center pier at this window will have to be reconstructed. This will help with structural concerns and also reduce the glass area helping to reduce solar gain in the office located by this window, the report says.
Steinmetz called the fire protection system at the courthouse spotty. System does not provide full coverage along designated exit routes, his report says.
County Auditor Kelly Spurgeon told supervisors last week that the courthouse is inspected every year, and she doesnt understand why the deficiency hasnt been mentioned before.
It might be good to have the fire inspector look at it, said Parker at the May 30 board meeting.
Supervisor Greg Kenning suggested that the county address the sprinkler issue before proceeding with the window project.
Supervisors instructed Spurgeon to look into Steinmetzs concerns in collaboration with courthouse Building Maintenance Manager Andrew Birch.
I still havent read the report yet, said Spurgeon Monday. Her office is busy with fiscal budgets this time of year. Spurgeon said the courthouse is inspected every year, and spotty coverage of the sprinkler system has never been brought to her attention.
Parker said Monday that there are no sprinklers on the fifth floor of the courthouse. We dont know that they are required to be there, he said. The floor is used only for storage.
Parker said the county also has questions about some fire escapes and exit routes. Some of the bolts going into that old stone are loose, said Parker. If the fire escapes are needed, their stability will have to be addressed.
Another issue supervisors want to address involves the escape route through the main courtroom on the third floor. We keep that door locked, Parker said. They were afraid people visiting the courthouse could slip a weapon in there, so we were required to keep that door locked.
However, the courtroom is designated as an escape route, Parker said. If the fire inspector requires that access to the courtroom be unrestricted for fire safety, the county will not be able to keep the courtroom locked as law enforcement requested.
Anyone in the courtroom has an escape route, Parker said, but when court is not in session, the room is locked, and a different escape route has to be used.
Parker said that hes contacted Ottumwa Fire Chief Tony Miller to request that the citys fire inspector look into the issues addressed in the Steinmetzs report.

A ductless heat pump is an efficient system for heating and cooling, the popularity of which is gaining all over the world. A good heating contractor would always recommend opting for a ductless pump since it is much safer and quieter than the rest of the room heaters in the market. Due to this reason numerous homeowners in US cities like Alexandria and Arlington are going for this appliance to keep them warm in cold climates.
In a ductless system one outdoor unit which is the compressor, serves more than a single indoor unit. The external and the internal units are connected to each other with the help of thin copper tubing. There are numerous benefits of this type of room heaters. Some of them are:
* Efficiency: The main benefit of a ductless heat pump is that it can heat homes at a fraction of the cost incurred in running baseboard heaters. These units do not even require the need to have expensive and invasive ductwork. Conventional heating systems have a distribution loss of around 30% whereas; ductless pumps have a loss of around 5%. Any heating contractor would always recommend choosing the latter since these help to save on winter power bills by almost 25 to 50%.
* Friendly to the environment: The copper tubing connecting the outdoor unit with the indoor one contains environment friendly refrigerant that is spread throughout the house. Unlike the conventional ones, the modern age ductless ones do not consume fuel which in turn lowers emissions.
* Easy to install: Any heating contractor would say that installing a ductless pump is a very easy task. All they have to do is mount the units and make a few connections. These units also require just a 3 inch opening in a wall.
* Numerous flexible mounting options: The best part of installing a ductless pump is that they can be mounted on a wall or a ceiling and they do not take up much space. This is one of the many reasons why US citizens in cities like Springfield and Alexandria are opting for this appliance.
Are you planning to install a ductless pump and looking for a reliable heating contractor? Alexandria and Fort Hunt are some of the cities in US where residents can hire the services of expert technicians from Frostys Heating & Cooling. They specialize in heating and cooling services and offer a complete package when it comes to such services.
