Hardiplank Siding Installation How To Install Hardiplank Siding

A lot is said about Hardiplank Siding and how wonderful it is. What is rarely discussed when a homeowner thinks about replacing their siding with Hardie Siding is the process of the installation.

When we visit with the HardieRepresentativeswho service our account, they tell us that nearly 90% of the phone calls that they get from homeowners having problems with their Hardie Siding is not due to the siding at all. In fact, the problems that they see and hear about are almost always due to improper installation by untrained installers.

Most of the problems that people experience with Hardiplank Siding in Houston is not even caused by the siding itself. It is usually caused by improper installation by inexperienced crews. With the recent problems in our economy there has been a spike in people that call themselves Professional Siding Contractors. While many of these people are good in their intentions, they lack the training and the proper equipment to install Hardiplank Siding the way the manufacturer requires.

We have actually worked for some unfortunate Houston homeowners who already paid someone to install Hardie Siding on their home and it was not intsalled properly and so it failed. If you do not install the siding per the manufacturers best practices and procedures you are likely voiding the warranty on your Hardiplank Siding without even knowing it.

The sure way to protect your investment in new Hardiplank Siding is to deal directly with an experienced, professional, preffered installer of Hardiplank Siding. Save On Siding has trained all their installers in the proper way to install and seal all Hardie Siding products. Your investment and your future home value should not just be trusted to anyone who claims they know how to properly install Hardie. Your peace of mind and future property values are protected by choosing Save On Siding for your siding project.

If you want expert installation of Hardie Siding on your home, trust nothing less than an accredited, factory-trained, experienced Hardiplank Siding Company. Save On Siding is you local Siding Expert and we are here to help.

Refacing Kitchen Cabinets | Kitchen Refacing | HouseLogic

    - August 13, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

Refacing might be superficial, but the results and savings are dramatic.

Refacing your kitchen cabinets includes covering the exposed frames with a thin veneer of real wood or plastic laminate.

Doors and drawer fronts are replaced to match or complement the new veneer. New hinges, knobs, pulls, and molding complete the transformation.

    Kitchen cabinet refacing pros:

Kitchen cabinet refacing cons (there arent many):

Your choices for the finished look of your cabinets are virtually limitless. Veneers are available in a wide variety of colors, patterns, textures, grains, and more, which you can mix or match to get a relativelylow-cost kitchen facelift.

Furthercustomize and update the look of your cabinets with newkitchen cabinet hardware.

A professional cabinet refacing for a typical 10-foot-by-12-foot kitchen starts at around $1,000 to $3,000 for laminate. Expect to pay $2,500 to $6,000 for real wood veneer. Costs can rise to $7,000 to $9,000 or more for a large project with high-quality wood veneer.

Finishing the project with new hardware (pulls, knobs, hinges) runs $2 to $4 per piece, up to $20 to $50 each for high-end hardware.

In comparison, completely replacing old kitchen cabinets with new cabinets starts at $4,000 to $5,000 and up for stock cabinets; $8,000 to $10,000 for semi-custom cabinets; $16,000 to $20,000 and up for custom-made cabinetry.

Refacing is feasible if your existing cabinet boxes are structurally sound and in good condition. Cabinets withwater damage, warping, and broken frames are poor candidates. Particleboard cabinetry sometimes requires fasteners, in addition to adhesives, to ensure that the veneer is secure.

A professional installer will come to your house to measure your cabinets and determine the amount of veneer required, the correct sizes and quantities fordoorand drawer fronts, and how much hardware is needed. Newly ordered doors and drawer fronts may take one to two weeks for delivery.

When all the materials are in hand, your installer removesoldcabinet door and drawerfronts, and prepares the surface of the cabinet boxes by washing the exteriors with a degreaser and lightly sanding the finish. Any significant flaws in the surface are repaired or filled to ensure a smooth, secure fit for the new veneer.

The installer applies veneer to the cabinet faces and any exposed cabinet ends, then mounts the new doors, drawer fronts, and hardware. The process typically takes two to four days.

Detailed instructions and adhesive-backed veneers make cabinet refacing a feasible do-it-yourself project.

If you have extra time, patience, the necessary veneering tools, and a knack for precision, you can save money by tackling kitchen cabinet refacing on your own.

If you opt to do your own kitchen cabinet refacing, youll spend about $200 to $500 on average for materials. Specialized tools (rollers, blades, irons) add $5 to $60 to the cost.

Cabinet Refacing and Refinishing – Angie’s List

    - August 13, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

When faced with a kitchen remodeling project, you have two major options for updating kitchen cabinets without installing new ones:refacing or replacing. Both projects can significantly boost the appearance and value of the kitchen, but many of the similarities end there.

Refacing typically consists of covering the exterior surfaces of your cabinets with new veneers, moldings and hardware. If your existing cabinets are solid wood, repainting or refinishing them with a new color of paint or stain can also update their appearance. Some cabinets take well to a deeper stain, whereas others may need nothing more than a fresh coat of paint. Cleaning and refinishing cabinets takes time, but is far less expensive than replacing the cabinets.

    Cabinet refacing/refinishing pros:

Reduced cost - kitchen cabinet refacing or refinishing can cost approximately 1/3 less than replacing all the cabinets

No demolition of existing cabinets is required, which also mean less potential damage to walls

Takes only a few days to complete

    Cabinet refacing/refinishing cons:

    Dust

    Potential noxious fumes and odors

    Limited customization options

When making a decision as to whether you should reface or replace your cabinets, also consider these factors:

Durability. Is the structure of the existing cabinets solid? If you have doubts about the overall condition of your cabinetry, an expert contractor can help you determine whether you need more than the cosmetic a refacing would provide.

Functionality. If you do not see any issues with your existing layout and would like to maintain the integrity of the design of your kitchen, refacing your cabinets may be the best choice. However, if you would prefer extra storage, more counter space or more flexible functions, new cabinets may be worth the extra investment in the long run.

Appearance. Are you replacing your kitchen appliances? Installing new countertops? If you have already committed to a significant investment in updating other parts of your kitchen, you may want to consult a highly rated kitchen remodeling company to determine if you would be better off with a complete renovation. It may be the case that the funds you would spend on a piecemeal approach may be better invested in new cabinets.

Cost. If funds and time arent significant factors in your kitchen remodel, you may want to consider the additional options offered with replacements. The variety of new cabinetry is wide-ranging, with many selections available in both stock and custom offerings. However, if budget is a concern, refacing or refinishing your cabinets can save time and money during your remodel.

Installing Fiber-cement Lap Siding – How to Install Siding …

    - August 13, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Intro

This product comes in 12-foot lengths. These steps show 8-1/4-inch-wide boards installed with 7-inch exposures; you can choose narrower or wider boards and exposures. Layout and installation are generally the same as for wood lap siding. Here are the differences:

-- At the bottom of the wall, there is a starter strip rather than a water table board. -- Because the material is very rigid, you can blind-nail the boards near the top, where the nailheads will be covered by the next course. -- Because fiber-cement expands with rises in humidity, the boards should be cut 1/4 inch short so there is a 1/8-inch gap at each joint.

Like wood siding, the ends should be coated with primer before you install them. Cutting calls for different techniques and tools but is not difficult.

    Checklist

Time Working with a helper, about a day to install 600 square feet

Tools Hammer or nail gun; miter saw; hand shears, grinder, or circular saw; speed square; tape measure; chalkline; drill; flat pry bar; level; caulking gun; utility knife; T-bevel; tin snips; staple gun; ladders and/or scaffolding

Skills Measuring, laying out a job, cutting, driving nails

Prep Cover the sheathing with building wrap and install trim boards and flashings as needed.

Materials Fiber-cement siding, starter strip for the bottom, board to make story pole, strips of metal flashing or felt, staples, stainless-steel or galvanized siding nails, primer and paint

Light colors help to keep a sunroom open and airy.

Sunrooms have oodles of windows, lots of natural sunlight, and are filled with comfortable furnishings. They are a tranquil spot to unwind and refresh yourself. As sunrooms age, remodeling helps maintain a cheerful, modern ambiance as well as improve the room's energy efficiency. A thorough cleaning and clutter removal are the first steps toward refurbishing a sunroom. Fresh colors, new furnishings and a variety of textures complete the much-needed updates, giving new life to an old space.

A fresh coat of paint brings new life to the walls and ceiling of a dated sunroom. Light-colored paints -- crisp white, light beige, barely yellow, pastel gray -- help to keep a sunroom feeling open and spacious. If your home is brick, one wall of your sunroom -- against the original exterior back wall of the home -- is probably brick and can be brightened with masonry paint. Installing white beadboard to a solid wall adds charming character. Refresh hard-surface flooring in good condition with a new, oversize area rug in a natural fiber, like sisal, or a synthetic that is either plush or durable depending on your needs. Consider installing under-floor, radiant heating when you plan to replace outdated hard flooring to improve the comfort of the space in cold weather.

A sunroom is true to its name by allowing lots of natural sunlight to stream indoors through numerous windows. There are times, however, when privacy is desired or the sun's rays are too intense. Window films can screen the sun, while providing an unobstructed view to the outdoors. This helps keep it cooler inside while blocking harmful ultraviolet rays from fading floors and furnishings. Consider replacing older windows with more energy-efficient models for an updated look and better climate control. Wooden window blinds with 2-inch slats in a finish that complements your decor let you control light with the twist of a wand and have a clean, modern look. Create a natural, eco-friendly look by installing natural-woven blinds over windows. Supplement natural lighting with decorative table and floor lamps. Add an overhead ceiling fan with an attached light fixture to provide bright illumination and a cool breeze.

Revamp a sunroom addition with comfortable furniture to accommodate your needs. For example, a cushy sofa and chunky armchairs provide an ideal spot to read or daydream. Add an ottoman in front of each chair for resting tired feet. Bamboo or wicker accent tables add natural texture while providing a place to set a drink or snack. Furnish your sunroom with a small wooden dinette set for casual dining or playing board games. Or, add a wrought-iron dining set with a glass tabletop to increase textural interest with an upscale feel. A small writing desk and chair is ideal for light office work.

Natural plants and bright sunrooms work well together. Bring the outdoors inside a sunroom with colorful, blooming plants, pots of greenery and vases of fresh flowers. Create an attractive display by placing several plants on a wooden plant ladder or metal baker's rack. Cheer up a lonely corner with a ficus or indoor palm tree. Accent a sunroom with natural accessories -- rustic birdhouses, large seashells, decorative animal statues, handmade pottery, wooden trays, woven baskets, glowing candles. Hang a piece of colorful artwork on a solid wall to inject lively energy into the space. Assorted toss pillows and soft furniture throws add cozy comfort. The sounds of a soothing, babbling fountain contribute to the tranquil ambiance.
