A year ago, demolition on the Metrodome was just finishing up. Now, with the help of more than 900 construction workers whove logged more than 1 million hours of work, a new football stadium is rising in Minneapolis Downtown East.
On Wednesday, those involved in building the massive structure celebrated the halfway mark.
Walking by the towering steel trusses and across the wide concrete concourses, Minnesota Vikings team officials and construction leaders marked the milestone for the more-than-$1 billion glass-and-steel stadium, showing off the clear-glass and black-zinc panels that have already started to cover the buildings exterior as the bowl of the stadium takes shape.
Today we have a chance to celebrate, said Mark Wilf, Vikings owner and team president. This stadium will truly be a landmark for civic pride.
Despite controversy over the stadiums glass and some leadership concerns, Wednesday was all about the construction crews reaching the halfway mark. Theyve completed more than $400 million worth of work. But for the crews buzzing around the building, welding and working away, there was no halftime show for the occasion.
Instead, they are working almost around the clock to finish just over 15 months of work to make the construction deadline of July 29, 2016.
Starting this summer, seats will be put in. In May, more of the black metal panels will be installed, covering the brown installation along the facade. Eight temporary towering green trusses will be removed, and the sprawling ridge truss stretching some 970 feet across the stadium will be fully connected in June. Steel work will be done by September. And by November, the stadium will be fully enclosed, with a roof and glass panels.
That glass, which is already starting to be installed on the east side, has drawn protests from bird advocates, who argue that its deadly to birds, especially because the building is near the Mississippi Rivers migratory pathway. 3M is testing a bird-safe film, with a trial of it expected this summer.
No stadium like this
If theres any doubt about the stadiums colossal size it will be nearly double the size of the Metrodome a tour of the main concourses show that they will be two to three times wider than the Domes.

Having always felt the desire to be a business owner, Delatte explains that, "it was just the right time for me. I'm not getting any younger, but I still have the energy, drive and motivation to build something that's mine." If he was going to make a big leap, he said, it was going to be with a franchise. "Why start from scratch when I can successfully run a business thats been proven, developed and wanted by the people who live in my hometown? If it's needed and the branding is strong, I know I can make it happen. With Window Genie, customer service sets us apart. Thats what Ive always strived for."
After much research, Delatte decided on Window Genie for its strong brand and lifestyle appeal. "I have a son, three daughters and four grandchildren. I also wanted to work with a company that believed in making customers happy."

A MAN has appeared in court accused of vastly overcharging an elderly couple for building work at their home.
Adam Whitfield is alleged to have charged the couple, in their seventies, 3,500 for gutter replacement, cleaning, and roof repairs, including work on an outhouse, at the property in the Bishop Auckland area.
Mr Whitfield, who was said to have been trading in the name of New Style Roofing, claims he was paid about 200 for the job that he and two unknown workmates carried out, last November.
He said he put in about seven-and-a-half hours work, with a similar amount by the two men assisting him, over two days.
Andrew White, representing Mr Whitfield, told Durham Crown Court that it is accepted by the defence that 3,500 would be, a gross overpayment, but he said the defendant claimed to have received only a small proportion of that figure for his labours.
Mr Whitfield was appearing at a preliminary hearing in the case today (Wednesday April 8), charged with fraud by false representation.
No pleas were taken, but a timetable was set for the case progression, with a provisional date agreed for the start of the trial, at the court, on Thursday, July 30.
Judge Christopher Prince adjourned the hearing and bailed 29-year-old Mr Whitfield, of Spring Gardens, West Auckland, to return to court for a plea hearing on Wednesday June 24.

Peyton Manning and the Broncos will play on new sod this season at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. (John Leyba, The Denver Post)
Can we all agree there have been enough jokes about grass in Colorado over the last year? OK.
This is something more serious, at least as it relates to the states most popular sports team. The Broncos are continuing the final phase of field renovations at Sports Authority Field on Wednesday, installing a new sod surface for the first time since the stadium opened in 2001. The field received criticism early last season following an unprecedented schedule. For the first time in the new stadiums history, the Broncos opened the preseason at home coupled with a soccer exhibition, the CU-CSU game and multiple public Broncos scrimmages because of construction at Dove Valley.
The turf eventually rebounded, looking better later in the season. But some new sod cant hurt, right?
The upgrades to the playing surface began in early February in partnership with Sports Contracting Group (SCG) and Millennium Sports Technologies (MSG). The surface consists of 100 percent Kentucky bluegrass sod grown by Graffs Turf Farms in Fort Morgan. It replaces the original synthetic blend surface used since 2001.
The Denver Outlaws lacrosse team will hold the first game on the field, facing the Charlotte Hounds on May 3.

The decision to redo the grass on the field the Denver Broncos play on came before lastseason started, and its about more than just the appearance, according to Denver Broncos facilities director Zach Myhra.
Our focus is whats below the grass, the 12 or so inches below the field where the roots actually take hold, as well as a warming system, irrigation system and systems of that nature to support what you see on game days, Myhra said.

Theres was no consideration to use any sort of artificial turf because the Broncos have always played on a natural surface.
The Denver Outlaws will be the first to play on the new field during their home opener against the Charlotte Hounds on May 3.
