L.A.'s sidewalk problem is also a tree problem

    - April 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

To the editor: The decrepit state of Los Angeles' sidewalks is all the fault of the city because of the trees it decided to have planted in each neighborhood. ("Finally, a decision to fix L.A.'s broken sidewalks," editorial, April 2)

I am an apartment owner in North Hollywood. We have a huge ficus tree planted next to our driveway that has been there for several decades. We made a direct request to the city for us to bear the cost of removal. The city has refused.

Consequently, we will continue at intervals to keep repairing the driveway.

The city must absolutely require the removal of specific tree species with invasive roots, or the problem will recur in a few decades after the city is finished spending $1.4 billion fixing its sidewalks. The city must speak to arborists and other experts and get at the root of the problem.

    Susan Glasser, Los Angeles

    ..

To the editor: Fixing L.A.'s sidewalk will be just like painting the Golden Gate Bridge: Once the repairs are completed in 30 years, the sidewalks will have deteriorated to the point where they will again need repairing.

The Architects Apprentice: a boy and an elephant in Istanbul

    - April 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    The Architects Apprentice

    by Elif Shafak

    Viking, 452 pp., $27.95

The Architects Apprentice is as intricate and lovely as the tile work in the magnificent mosques its protagonist helps build.

Elif Shafaks new novel, a fantastical tale rooted in history, follows a boy named Jahan in 16th-century Istanbul at the height of the Ottoman Empire. He arrives at Sultan Suleimans palace a maze of rooms within rooms and paths that drew circles, a serpent swallowing its tail escorting Chota, a white elephant that is a gift to the sultan. Through the course of the novel, inquisitive, plucky Jahan grows from an illiterate 12-year-old to one of the trusted apprentices of Chief Royal Architect Sinan to a respected master of his craft.

Written in English, Architect was first published in author Shafaks (The Bastard of Istanbul) native Turkey. Through Jahans journey, she addresses weighty topics such as the conflict between art, science and politics; the crossroads of faith, superstition and fundamentalism; destiny and self-determination; and the many permutations of love.

Jahan, with his poets soul and eggshell heart, has three great loves: Chota, his dearest friend; Master Sinan, a brilliant and gentle father figure; and Princess Mihrimah, the Sultans daughter, who is drawn to Chota, the latest addition to her fathers menagerie, and grows fond of his keeper.

Animal lovers will relate to the bond between Jahan and Chota. With Jahan at his side or on his back, the elephant entertains at the sultans celebrations, does heavy lifting on construction sites and, with sharpened, lethal tusks and to Jahans horror, goes to war.

After their initiation into battle, it is Chief Royal Architect Sinan who brings a traumatized Jahan back from the brink, presenting him with a small carved wooden elephant whose tusks have been replaced with flowers. Sinan, a convert to Islam with an expansive world view, intertwines his knowledge of human nature and architecture as he imparts his wisdom: God has built the palace of our body ... Remember, even a beggar owns a palace.

And it is Sinan who deems that Jahan be educated in the sultans academy. But the menagerie remains Jahans favorite spot, as he awaits visits from Princess Mihrimah, beautiful as the meaning of her name the sun and the moon.

NAOURS, France A headlamp cuts through the darkness of a rough-hewn passage 100 feet underground to reveal an inscription: "James Cockburn 8th Durham L.I."

It's cut so clean it could have been left yesterday. Only the date next to it April 1, 1917 roots it in the horrors of World War I.

The piece of graffiti by a soldier in a British infantry unit is just one of nearly 2,000 century-old inscriptions that have recently come to light in Naours, a two-hour drive north of Paris. Many marked a note for posterity in the face of the doom that trench warfare a few dozen miles away would bring to many.

"It shows how soldiers form a sense of place and an understanding of their role in a harsh and hostile environment," said historian Ross Wilson of Chichester University in Britain.

Etchings, even scratched bas-reliefs, were left by many soldiers during the war. But those in Naours "would be one of the highest concentrations of inscriptions on the Western Front" that stretches from Switzerland to the North Sea, said Wilson.

The site's proximity to the Somme battlefields, where more than a million men were killed or wounded, adds to the discovery's importance. "It provides insight into how they found a sense of meaning in the conflict," said Wilson.
