Today kicks off National Lawn Care month. To celebrate, The Espoma Company is helping people make the switch to organic lawns and create Safe Paws environments through tips shared on the companys Facebook page.
To show its commitment to chemical free lawns that are safe for pets, Espoma is hosting a #SafePawsChallenge. The company is donating $500 to the National Canine Cancer Foundation for every 5,000 new likes to its Facebook page during the month of April. The foundation funds research and raises awareness to fight cancers that affect dogs.
Since canine cancer affects one out of every three dogs, Jeremy Brunner, vice president of Espoma, said the Canine Cancer Foundation was a natural fit for its Safe Paws initiative.
People want green grass but they also want to feel confident their yard is safe for their kids and pets, too, says Brunner. The Canine Cancer Foundation is on a mission to help dogs live longer and healthier lives. Thats our goal with Safe Paws, too. Together our efforts promote awareness of healthy pets.
To help people understand how easy it is to have a safe lawn, Espoma is sharing 30 tips in 30 days to help green up the 30 million acres of grass across the nation and drive awareness for canine cancer. Each tip will be posted daily on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #LawnCareMonth.
These insightful tips provide information to create lush, chemical-free lawns in just 30 days. Topics range from soil testing and seeding to fertilizing and creating Safe Paw environments.
Brunner says that feeding a lawn a healthy diet of natural ingredients offers benefits not just for your grass, but for you, your family, pets and the environment, too.
The Benefits of an Organic Lawn An organic lawn is easier and, in the long run, less expensive than conventional lawn programs. In fact, organic lawns take less time and effort watering, fertilizing and mowing all summer.
Getting a lush green lawn means making sure the soil is healthy, says Kathy Connolly, lawn care and lawn alternative expert for About.com.

FLORENCE, S.C. Spring weather has people itching to get out and start fertilizing their lawns, but landscapers say hold on, its not quite time.
We get a nice day and people go out, buy fertilizer and put it down, said Brandon Granger, horticulturalist and owner of Florence-based Granger Landscapes. The bad part is, if we have a late freeze, the fertilizer will kill the grass. You need to wait until the grass is all green before fertilizing.
Granger said it is a busy time of year for his company because people are starting to come outside after being cooped up all winter.
Most folks want us to do a spring cleanup and pick up debris and put out pine straw, he said. Flowers and seasonal color we wont start planting till the end of April.
When it comes to lawn care, Clemson Extension agent Tony Melton said, its too late to use weed killer. He said dont do any fertilizing till May.
If you do it too early the nutrients will wash away, Melton said. Its best to just mow down the weeds because its too late to control them. These are cold-weather weeds, so theyll die when it warms up anyway. The best weed control is green grass.
He said its important to apply fertilizer to your lawn when its dry, then water it in or let the rain do it. If it is put on wet grass, fertilizer will cause the grass to burn. Both Melton and Granger agreed that spring fertilizer application will do the trick.
Karen Hatchell-Crawford, who runs Hatchells Landscape with her brother Westin, said if the grass has died it likely wont grow back and you should re-sod those areas. She said its important to get fresh sod, otherwise you dont know how long its been lying around on a pallet.
We get all of our sod fresh, Crawford said. We know when our sod was cut, and it is cut for when we need it.
With people thinking about sprucing up their property, Hatchell Landscape office assistant Chris Williams said she fields many calls from people wanting to get palm trees.

A 40,000 revamp of a market is under way in a bid to boost flagging trade.
Eastleigh Borough Council has brought in a specialist consultant to spearhead the move in a bid to rejuvenate the town market.
Major changes including themed weekends, along with attracting local stallholders and producers to the market, are now being tabled in a bid to to try to rejuvenate footfall and trade.
Guy Riddoch, area co-ordinator for Eastleigh, told council committee members that three different market providers in the last four years had not been able to help stallholders compete with the growth of discount stores and Internet shopping.
He said the council had taken the radical action of bringing in a specialist advice team to coincide with the completion of current improvement works in the market area.
The market on the pedestrianised area of Leigh Road is held twice weekly on Thursdays and Saturdays but the changes will only affect the Saturday market.
The idea is to develop a range of locally grown stallholders drawn from existing retailers, community organisations and entrepreneurs, rather than rely on traditional market stallholders who travel around different markets in the area.
Entertainment is also proposed under the plans put forward by consultants Retail Revival, which has recently re-launched markets in London areas.

POOLER, GA (WTOC) -
There's still two weeks before the Tanger Outlets in Pooler open, and while some crews are working around the clock to get the project done in time, others have called it quits.
The reason? They said some service vehicles are being towed while crews are in the middle of their job.
The general manager of All American Glass said seven retailers will now have to come pick up their mirror orders and intall them themselves.
All American Glass company said they were parked in a service vehicle area when it happened, the main contractor said they need to park in the main parking lot.
"You find the back of the building that you're working on and you pull up, well now, they are hauling you away," General Manager of All America Glass Jim Rackley said.
Rackley said they've been busy installing mirrors in nearly 20 retail stores at the new outlet mall. They've been out there for several weeks parking in the designated service vehicle area behind the store until yesterday, when his company van got towed.
"I'm not going to deal with this towing issue because I'm not going to ask my men to park 100 yards away and walk to the job," Rackley said.
DPR Hardin is the general contractor for the entire mall, they told WTOC that crews are supposed to unload and then move their cars to the parking lot. They said with hundreds of folks providing different services from glass, electricity, and goods these areas need to stay clear because it could become a hazard.
"You just get used to toting things, you carry a little buggy or cart," Joe Volratch with Traditional Contractors said.
