Building God's Way (BGW), a national leader in church design and church building, will host the next in its spring series of Momentum Summit seminars at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas on Wednesday, April 8 from 8:30 am - 12:30pm. The event is free to all ministry leaders and will be followed by a complimentary lunch. More than 900 ministry leaders attended a Momentum Summit event in 2014 and this year's events are expected to draw even more.
Churches and other non-profits are facing ever-increasing financial challenges to sustaining their ministries, including cultural shifts in attitudes toward church, changing tax legislation and generational changes in charitable giving. The focus of the Momentum Summit is to introduce new paradigms and to transform the way ministry leaders think about how their facilities are designed and utilized, how they can effectively reach all generations and how they can integrate for-profit enterprise to expand ministry opportunities.
The speaker panel will feature experts and consultants who have worked with hundreds of ministries across the country in the areas of church leadership & growth; church design, construction & remodel; capital fundraising; for-profit integration, biblical entrepreneurship, A/V technology and more.
The keynote speaker for the seminars will be Pastor Eric Bahme, a cutting-edge entrepreneur, passionate preacher and author of the book, The MBE (Mission-Based Entrepreneur) Revolution / Developing Economic Engines that Drive Mission-Based Movements. Eric and his stories of successful for-profit integration with churches have been featured on the 700 Club, Harvest Show, and in several local and national publications and television broadcasts.
A representative from BGW Architects will present sessions on designing authentic, flexible and community-based church buildings as well as a revolutionary & biblical approach to the church construction process. S&B Construction, the exclusive BGW contractor for the state of Texas, will also have representatives on hand during the seminar to answer questions and share their expertise on church construction & remodel.

Planning Commission approves South Shores Church project after seven years of hearings and plan modifications
South Shores Churchs plan to expand its Crown Valley Parkway campus in phases over 10 years was unanimously approved by the Dana Point Planning Commission on Monday. Photo: Andrea Swayne

Since 2009, South Shores Church has been pursuing approval of an expansion plan that would more than double its size. With a packed house at the Community Center gymnasiuma vast majority of the seats filled with people showing support for the project by wearing bright green T-shirtsthe Dana Point Planning Commission on Monday approved conditional use, coastal development and site development permits and the final Environmental Impact Report for the project.
Project opponents, most living in adjacent neighborhoods, have long criticized the project; fearing impacts of such a large and lengthy project would include excessive noise, traffic, debris, pollution and runoff, as well as concerns related to the stability of the slope below the 6-acre site at 32712 Crown Valley Parkway.
The campus currently has a chapel, sanctuary, administration building/fellowship hall, a preschool and a 28-space parking lot. Plans will require the demolition of three of the churchs existing buildingsnot to include the sanctuary buildingand the construction of four new ones along with a new parking structure.
The original 2009 proposal included a preschool/administration building, a Community Life Center, two education buildings and a 421-space, two-level, semi-subterranean parking structure. In total, the church was planning a 46,817-square-foot increase in size to 89,362 square feet. The 10-year-long construction schedule was also a source of concern.
A public scoping meeting was held in March of 2010 for the then-in process Draft EIR being prepared by LSA Associates. In 2011, the deadline for the EIR completion was extended to 2013 to allow adequate time for the extensive geo-technical evaluation of the site, according to city officials. Further extension of the deadline brought the final EIRs official completion date to March 2015. City staff reported to commissioners that the final EIR identified no significant impacts.
During the public review period for the project, in addition to comments at public meetings, city staff reported receiving 118 letters61 letters raised concerns, 53 were in support of the project, two from state agencies (the Office of Planning and Research and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife), one from Orange County Public Works and one (or possibly a few more from the public) were duplicates.

BENWOOD - Still in shock from seeing their church damaged by a massive fire, members of the St. John Catholic Church on Wednesday said they hoped the 140-year-old building can be saved.
Engineers could be seen assessing the damage on Wednesday morning, hoisted to the top of the church in a crane from Savage Construction. Bryan Minor, spokesman for the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, said the diocese is waiting for the engineer's report before making a decision about whether the church can be saved.
"The work by the structural engineer will take time. They have to check on how strong the walls are and how strong floor is under the pews. The fire department told us on Monday there was a foot or more of water lying on the floor - that's a lot weight," Minor said. "We're preceding with an abundance of caution until we get the full engineering report."

Minor said the parish school's students are on spring break next week and are scheduled to come back to class April 13. Even though damage to the school was minimal, Minor said if the students cannot use the building, other possible structures are being looked at for them to finish out the year in.
"The problem is with the walls. With the school there, we have to know if it's in danger of falling," he said.
Also at the scene Wednesday were agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as officials with the state Fire Marshal's office. Minor said ATF officials told the diocese it was "standard procedure" to assist the fire marshal in investigations. He said the fire marshal's office said the cause still is being determined, but no one believes it was arson.
Several city residents were seen walking along Main Street on Wednesday, talking to each other about the fire and the fate of the church.
Lifelong Benwood resident David Branicky attended St. John's parish school as a child and was an altar boy for the church. He remembers how nervous he was the first time he had to read the epistle in front of the congregation. It was something usually reserved for adults, he said.
