Property Brothers share home repair tips for spring and prank the anchors!

    - April 1, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

If your home is baring some wounds from winter, Property Brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott are here to help.

From cleaning the deck to clearing the gutters, the home experts shared DIY ways to spruce up your home for spring and they had some April Fools' Day fun pranking the anchors in the meantime.

    Regroutingtile

One quick way to make your bathroom shine is to clean and, if necessary, regrout the tile.

"You don't have to redo all of the tiling," Jonathan said. All it takes is either picking up tools from your hardware store to scrub in between the tiles. If that isn't doing the trick, knock out any tiles surrounded by stained grout, remove mortar and any stained pieces, then reset the tile and it should look as good as new.

    Stained siding

Take a look at your home's siding. If it's stained, don't break out the paint just yet. Instead, grab a scrub brush, get it wet and scrub down the siding to remove dirt and residue.

"It's just about cleaning up the outside of the house," Jonathan said. "Usually you can just clean up and repair."

    Deck wear

Because decks wear quickly, you typically have to do an overhaul on a deck every two years. There are a few different options if you want to do this on your own. If you want a natural look, simply clean up the wood and reseal it with something that'd clear. If you want a bold appearance, you can stain the wood with any color you want. If you have a composite deck, you don't have to worry about staining. Just wash it!

    Frost seeding pastures

Broadcasting legume seeds on frozen ground in March and early April is a low cost method to rejuvenate thinning pastures and increase quality and yield. Success is better where pasture has bare spots or was grazed closely the previous year. The freezing and thawing action of the soil provides critical seed to soil contact. Seeding is often by hand with a broadcaster or a spreader on an ATV or snowmobile. Legumes work best. Red clover is most successful but requires a repeat every two to three years or an opportunity to go to seed regularly. Trefoil is slower to establish but grows well in a variety of conditions, reseeds itself and doesnt cause bloat. Alfalfa has limited success because of auto-toxicity preventing new seedlings to grow near mature plants. Grass seed has proven to be more difficult to establish. Seed red clover at four to five lbs., white clover at two lbs. and trefoil at four to five lbs, apply phosphorous in late summer after seedlings have established. In addition, consider grazing lightly in the establishment year to reduce competition and avoid overgrazing.

The most reliable time to seed forages is early spring, regardless of whether the crop is direct-seeded or seeded with a companion crop. With a spring seeding, moisture is usually adequate, and the plants are well established for winter survival. Seed as early as a seedbed can be prepared to increase the chances of adequate and frequent rainfall during the critical germination period. Seed to soil contact is particularly important. A loose, lumpy seedbed dries out quickly. Packing can help preserve moisture.

Winter annual weeds can be a common problem, and herbicide application may be required. See OMAFRA Publication 75, Guide to Weed Control. Be cautious to avoid stunting growth due to herbicide effect. Recommended Guidelines for Companion Planting: Oat, barley or mixed grains are commonly used as companion crops. As a general rule, select the strongest-strawed, shortest and earliest grain variety in any species for the least competition. Reduce the spring grain seeding rate to 54-63 lbs/acre. Reduce the nitrogen fertilizer or manure rate to minimize the risk of a dense grain crop and lodging. Under most conditions, do not apply more than 15-20 lbs/acre of nitrogen on spring grains.

    Odd Jobs: Feng shui consultant

    - April 1, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Carol Wheelock makes a living bringing harmony to people's homes.

"I immediately notice things when I walk into a house," she said. "And I can usually have an idea of what's working and what's not working."

She's a former public school teacher turned certified feng shui practitioner who helps clients understand how their surroundings affect them.

"Feng shui itself means wind and water," she explained.

The practice is based on ancient Chinese beliefs. By balancing chi, or the energy in and around us, it's thought feng shui enhances the environment in which we live. Wheelock says the work is quite personal. She wouldn't let us approach her clients, so we found a pair of guinea pigs who allowed us inside their consultation. You may recognize them: WCAX Reporter Alex Apple and Digital Media Producer Trevor Audet.

Carol Wheelock: You must have more coats than that?

Alex Apple: I keep my coats in my closet. But I have a big closet.

    Carol Wheelock: And you?

Trevor Audet: Mine are mostly on the floor in my bedroom.

Feng shui group New Trend rearranges assets after unexpectedly bad trading

Shares in Singapore-based New Trend Lifestyle, which operates a feng shui and fortune telling business, have plunged after it revealed a major reorganisation and warned losses would be worse than previously predicted. The AIM-listed company in September cautioned of a depressed retail environment in Singapore coupled with slower than intended progress in China.

On Wednesday, management said neither had improved as hoped and, despite overhead costs having been cut and gross profit margins remaining above 70%, the loss before tax for 2014 was now expected to be "significantly" worse than the 496,000 Singapore dollar-loss the year before.

New Trend has now decided to reorganise its business, ceasing all existing retail operations in China with immediate effect in order to concentrate "for the time being" on Singapore and continue with the current China business development projects from Singapore.

"The board believe that these actions will place it in a better position to be trading profitably on a month by month basis by [the fourth quarter] 2015 and breakeven for the year as a whole," the company said.

As of 31 March, 2015, it still remained cash positive and directors stated that they believe the company "can be put onto a profitable footing without the need for further external capital".
