New industry standard for pest control on farms

    - March 31, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

FARMERS in Dorset will have peace of mind thanks to the launch of a new industry standard for pest control, experts claim.

The initiative, accompanied by a certification scheme, is designed to promote professional standards for pest control companies throughout the EU.

The new industry standard was launched last week by the Confederation of European Pest Management Associations (CEPA).

CEPA is an umbrella trade body for urban pest control.

Bertrand Montmoreau, president of CEPA, said the launch of CEN standard EN16636 and CEPA Certified would have far-reaching benefits.

He said: This will ensure pest controllers can benchmark themselves against the best in Europe and thats great news for farmers.

We know that in many European markets, there are some pest controllers who are untrained and do not stay up-to-date with the latest products, pests and legislation, and that can create big problems for us all.

But with the new standard and certification scheme, farmers can be totally confident theyre getting a professional service.

This will enable us to portray a positive image to the general public of the vital role that our industry plays at a European level in terms of public health, food safety, environmental sustainability and economic significance. It is a key part of our effort to protect citizens responsibly.

CEPA went out to develop a standard five years ago by which professional companies in pest management could be measured. CEN represents the European Committee for Standardisation. Alongside other bodies, CEN helps develop European standards and technical specifications across a wide range of sectors.

First exhibition devoted to the lighting industry

    - March 31, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Exhibiz general manager Pakwan Jiamjiroj, whose company is helping organise the Thailand Lighting Fair 2015, said Messer Frankfurt was adding Bangkok to its series of annual lighting exhibitions.

Messer Frankfurt organises lighting fairs in many countries, including the Light+Building exhibition in Germany and the Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition in China, the world's largest lighting fair.

Nikom Lertmalligaporn, a representative of Messer Frankfurt in Thailand, said the organiser would hold roadshows in a few provinces, such as Phuket, Udon Thani and Ubol Ratchathani, as well as in Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan and China to promote the event.

It will be held at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre from August 19 to 21.

Messer Frankfurt has recognised the fact that Thailand is the biggest lighting market in Asean, he said.

Vilas Ngamsangroongsaroj, deputy governor of fair sponsor the Provincial Electricity Authority, said more than 250 companies had agreed to join the event, including manufacturers and merchants from Thailand and other Asian countries such as China, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, India, Singapore and Malaysia.

Thailand's lighting and equipment market was estimated to be worth Bt30 billion in 2014, up 12 per cent from the previous year.

The market is growing remarkably fast thanks to the rising adoption of LED (light emitting diodes) lighting technology, which is expected to increase its share in the household segment from 10 to 20 per cent at present to 50 per cent within the next two to three years.

Targeted exhibitors include commercial, decorative, LED/green, outdoor/urban, residential, and smart lighting companies, as well as lighting accessories, parts and components companies.

The organisers expect to attract between 5,000 and 10,000 visitors to the fair, including designers and planners, engineers and builders, industry end-users, traders and manufacturers, government ministries, and energy-efficiency organisations.

300 to play dead on State House lawn

    - March 31, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

When Amber Blevens came out of jail for the fifth and final time, a window opened.

It was fleeting, but it was a real opportunity for her to give up heroin and regain control of her life. Most, if not all addicts have a window like this, said Blevenss stepmother, Kriss Blevens.

To overcome addiction is impossible without an overlapping moment when the addict is ready to change his or her life and support services are ready to help, the elder Blevens said.

If our health care system is set up to be ready when the addict is ready, the magic of recovery can happen, she said. If the funding and the bed is not there . . . there is no opportunity. It will progress until death.

At 8:30 tomorrow morning, 300 people will lie as if dead on the State House lawn to say that New Hampshire isnt ready to help its citizens who suffer from substance-abuse disorders. They represent the more than 300 people who died last year in the state as a result of a drug overdose.

At 22 years old, Amber Red Blevens was one of the 300 lost.

Ahead of a review of the states budget, the bodies will serve as a reminder and hopefully a prompt to restore substance abuse-related services cut by the House Finance Committee from the governors proposed budget, said Joe Gallagher, communications director for New Futures, the group organizing the event.

In January 2014, Amber told Kriss Blevens through a glass partition in jail that when she was released a few days later, she was ready for help. She wanted to check in to long-term rehab, get clean and pursue her goal of becoming an EMT.

Kriss Blevens put Amber on the waiting list for Farnum Center in Manchester, hoping that a bed would soon open up so Amber could receive long-term treatment there. When Kriss returned to the jail two more times in the following week to visit Amber, she had to relay the fact that no beds were open.

Her desperation became more and more, Kriss said.

Landscape plan calls for new walkways

    - March 31, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Summer construction on the $2 million project will change the space on Liacouras Walk near Wachman Hall.

by Steve Bohnel 31 March 2015

Starting this summer, construction on one of the two main walkways on Main Campus will mark the beginning of a major landscaping plan throughout the university.

At a March 11 meeting, the Board of Trustees approved the allocation of up to $2 million for a landscape project involving Liacouras Walk and Wachman Plaza. University Architect Margaret Carney said the money will be drawn from the Plant Development Fund, an annually replenished pool of money allocated to address infrastructure projects.

James Templeton, Temples director of architectural services, said the fund is mostly used for exterior projects, but also occasionally for interior improvements, like ceiling repairs, window replacements and lobby refurbishments.

Concerning the current project involving Liacouras Walk and Wachman Plaza, Carney said this plan is the pilot project of a major landscaping plan that the university is unveiling in a few weeks.

Its definitely, for one, about beautification, Carney said of the current project. We definitely want to make it a better experience to walk on the paths around campus its also about giving people better clues as to where theyre supposed to go, so landscapes around building entrances we want to use it to give people more clarity for where theyre going.

Carney added that one of the key aspects of the plan is replacing the walkways with pervious pavement, which would improve drainage from rain. Templeton said another issue is a lack of unity throughout the major walkways on Main Campus. The inconsistencies range from 10 to 15 different paving standards and 25 different types of light fixtures, he said.

This is the first attempt to try to unify everything, and make standards for the rest of the university, Templeton said.

In order to combat this issue along with general collaboration on the project Temple has partnered with LRSLAstudio, a landscape architectural firm located at 230 S. Broad St.
