EAB discovery in Clinton begs question for other areas

    - March 30, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The confirmation last week of an infestation of emerald ash borer, or EAB, in Clinton begs the question of when the ash-killing pest will be found in Moline and the Iowa Quad-Cities.

With the discovery of EAB in Rock Island in late 2013, most people who work with trees assume the pest is already in those other locations, just undetected.

So if you're a homeowner with ash trees, should you treat them? That is a personal decision, but foresters say the only ash trees that will survive once EAB hits an area in full force are those that are treated, something that must be done for the life of the tree.

Some people would rather remove a tree and plant a replacement.

Ash trees within 15 miles of a confirmed EAB site are at risk ofattack, and preventativetreatments are suggested withinthis zone, if an owner so chooses. At present, that includes the entire metro Quad-Cities, plus Muscatine and Clinton.

The next window for preventive treatment measures (trunk injection, soil injection, soil drench or basal trunk sprays) will be from mid-April to mid-May.

Usethe next few weeks to have landscape and tree service companies bid on work so you can review thembefore the recommended treatment time.

The city of Davenport has set up a process for homeowners to treat city trees in the boulevard, the area between the sidewalk and the street. For more information on this, go to cityofdavenportiowa.com. Click on "departments," "public works" and "trees."

Here is more information about treatment from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, as well as some common questions and answers:

Ash trees can be protected with insecticide applied by a commercial pesticide applicator or the homeowner. Trees must be healthy, vigorously growing and valuable to your landscape.

When did you start WD Yards? 1985.

Can you believe this is your 30th anniversary in business? Its pretty exciting to think we are celebrating our 30th anniversary. We have had thirty years of working with great people.

How did you get involved in lawn care and landscaping? The lawn mowing actually started a couple of years prior to 1985 with me as a kid not old enough to drive, mowing lawns in my parents neighborhood with a little mower and borrowed gas from my dads truck. Soon after I was mowing a lot of lawns and even got my first business cards. Through the years the little lawn mowing job turned into WD Yards. It is an American dream story come true.

How many employees did you have when WD Yards began? At first, I was just mowing lawns myself. When I had more customers than I could handle, I started hiring neighborhood kids. After I left for college in 1987, I partnered with my dad, David Christensen. My mother, Dixie Christensen also joined the team to run the office, and thats when what is now known as WD Yards was born.

    Sports donations confirm athletes faith

Whether it is baseball, basketball, or hockey, Logan Tiell plays them all. Sports keep him busy, active, and out of trouble.

So when Logan, an eighth grader at St. Joseph School in Sylvania, considered service projects for his upcoming Confirmation, sports immediately came to mind.

I was thinking about Confirmation and thinking of a service project that I could do, Logan said. I thought, Why dont we collect sports equipment for people that dont have new sports equipment to use? A lot of people have used or outgrown sports equipment. I thought, Why dont we make a collection and donate that to people who dont get new sports equipment each year, like I am blessed to have?

Logan will be confirmed on April 19 in Toledos Rosary Cathedral. He and his grandmother Joyce Swin, who is also his sponsor, came up with a community service action plan.

After much discussion and planning, they decided on a one-day collection of sports equipment. The day before his confirmation, they will hold what they have dubbed a Sport Equipment Clean Up from 9 a.m. until noon at St. Josephs Church in Sylvania.

All items that are collected will be donated to Sylvania Area Family Services and the Farm Labor Organizing Committee.

We said wed like to keep it in the area to make it local, Ms. Swin said. But then wed also like to do something different and we considered the group of migrant workers because of the fact that they dont really have a home. Theyre here for a matter of weeks and we were wondering what the kids do. Logan said playing baseball or softball or Frisbee would be a good activity.

Eight of Logans classmates, also Confirmation candidates, are teammates on his baseball team and will join Logan in supporting the collection drive.

CSG not a focus for farmers in NSW

    - March 30, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Coal seam gas and mining were not the biggest issues for regional voters in NSW, a lobby says.

Coal seam gas and mining were not the biggest issues for rural and regional voters in the NSW election despite their high profile, the state's key farming lobby group says.

NSW Farmers president Fiona Simson says while attention has been focused on the Greens being on track to claim the far north coast seats of Ballina and Lismore from the Nationals, coal mining and CSG were not key factors in rural electorates elsewhere in the state.

"Coal mining and CSG were identified as big issues going into this election and two seats to the Greens would indicate that they are big issues," Ms Simson told AAP.

"However, what is also indicated is there are a number of big issues in NSW in agriculture."

The sprawling seat of Barwon, where CSG activity around Narrabri is a hot-button issue, was retained by the Nationals' Kevin Humphries, albeit with a reduced margin.

In Tamworth, where Chinese mining giant Shenhua's Watermark coal mine proposal has angered farmers, Nationals MP Kevin Anderson held his seat with an increased vote.

NSW Nationals spokesman Julian Luke said the mine was not a key issue.

"In terms of the impact of Shenhua and CSG I don't think it was one of the main issues in the electorate," he said.

The federal government brought progress on the mine to a temporary halt before the election after it declared it would be assessed under federal water resource impact laws.
