Southern Arizona blooms with lush garden tours

    - March 30, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Eastern spirituality meets Sonoran Desert and Spanish decor in one of the stops along the Tucson Botanical Gardens annual home and garden tour April 11.

This is one of the more unique homes the tour has seen, according to a news release about the event.

An east-side couple has blended feng shui, meditation, Spanish art, cultured gardens and the wild Sonoran Desert to create a serene landscape for humans and wildlife.

The Harold Bell Wright Estates property is one of five gardens on the tour.

Taiwan-born Yuya Huang already owned the 1963 Territorial burnt-adobe home when he and Colombia native Maribel Valdes married in 2012. The landscape out back consisted of a brick patio.

Basically, this was all desert, says Valdes, pointing to the backyard of the 3.9-acre property.

Valdes, who lived in Miami, Florida, before moving to Tucson, was eager to learn about desert gardening and transform the property.

She first consulted with an expert in feng shui (wind water in Chinese), an ancient method of positioning architectural elements and incorporating natural features to affect the flow of life energy known as chi.

Then the couple set out to redo the landscape using their own design.

Feng shui. To affect chi flow, they installed three water features throughout the landscape, strategically laid rocks for gardens and walking paths and added a courtyard fireplace.

Sensor cable monitors all fences – even detects drone fly-bys

    - March 30, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Fenced-in areas, such as airports, nuclear power stations, industrial sites, or private plots of land, can now be monitored thanks to novel sensor technology that has been developed by a team of experimental physicists, led by Professor Uwe Hartmann at Saarland University.

The sensors respond immediately as soon as someone tries to climb over or cut through the fence, providing information on the precise location of the security breach. They are even able to detect a low-flying drone passing overhead.

The thin cable containing the magnetic field sensors can be easily installed on perimeter fences of all kinds. The research team is currently working on developing the system so that it can recognize the cause of a disturbance and can automatically identify false alarms triggered by wind or animals.

The team is collaborating with industrial partners to produce a cable suitable for mass production. The technology will be shown at HANNOVER MESSE from April 13th to April 17th. The team will be exhibiting at the Saarland Research and Innovation Stand in Hall 2, Stand B 46.

If someone tries to tamper with a fence, or if they try to climb over it or cut the links with bolt cutters, they will, unavoidably, cause a vibrational disturbance. The movement of the metal fence as it swings back and forth, the motion of the metal cutters or even the trespasser's belt will all influence the Earth's magnetic field. These changes are being exploited by a team of experimental physicists at Saarland University for a new type of surveillance technology.

'Our magnetometers (magnetic field sensors) are highly sensitive and can reliably measure even the smallest of changes in the ambient magnetic field,' explains Professor Uwe Hartmann. The sensors are even able to detect when a drone flies close by overhead - provided, of course, that the drone contains metal.

'The sensors can detect disturbances in the surrounding magnetic field, including the magnetic field above them, with a range extending several metres,' adds research assistant Haibin Gao who is working on the sensor technology as part of Hartmann's team.

The cable, which contains the linearly arranged sensors, has a diameter comparable to a standard electrical cable and enables the remote monitoring of miles of perimeter fencing.

'The cable can be attached to the fence, built into it or even buried beneath it. We are currently working with a number of companies to reduce the size of the system and, most importantly, to lower the cost of producing the sensors to a level where large-volume production becomes feasible,' says Uwe Hartmann.

The contactless sensors are not subject to wear and have a low power consumption. They are unaffected by rain or fog.

LR vets center, detractors mend fences

    - March 30, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Estella Morris considers the Veterans Day Treatment Center in downtown Little Rock a good neighbor.

The director of the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System's center for honorably discharged veterans knows her facility, opened in March 2013, has to be. People are watching.

"I think we've been good neighbors," Morris said. "That was always our intent."

As its name states, the center is not an overnight shelter, but it does offer a range of programs to the veterans -- many of whom are or have recently been homeless -- who visit on weekdays. Those programs include assisting with locating permanent housing and helping veterans with noncriminal legal problems such as child support issues and bankruptcy filings.

The center, with its staff of about 40, is open from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. weekdays, Morris said. Between 90 and 100 veterans visit on an average day.

But when officials first announced that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs was moving its drop-in clinic from Second and Ringo streets to the new location at 1000 Main St., some business and residential neighbors in the Main Street area objected. They feared that opening the center in the abandoned home of a Cook Jeep-Chrysler automobile dealership would attract more homeless people to the area.

There were also fears expressed that more substance-abuse problems would surface in the area, especially with the center sitting directly across the street from a liquor store.

The debate over the new location of the day treatment center raged for roughly three months in early 2012.

City and state leaders joined the fray. U.S. Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla., chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Veterans Affairs, visited for meetings about the new location of the center. Zoning and land use were checked and other sites suggested.

In the end, the VA said it had already signed an option to lease the property after a more than two-year search and that its old location, opened in 1996, was cramped and veterans needed a new, larger center.
