Paint 'by the numbers' to get the best results

    - March 28, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

When it comes to painting the home exterior, aesthetics drive most decisions, but you shouldnt ignore the math when choosing your paint. Thats the advice of the Paint Quality Institute, a leading authority on paints and painting.

Things like cost and coverage rate should be taken into account, but some other numbers are much more important, said Debbie Zimmer, paint and color expert at the Institute.

She said that knowingly or unknowingly every paint job involves three key numerical decision points:

So, to sum up, if you want the best results with your home painting, choose a top quality 100 percent acrylic latex coating, and consider using one that functions as both a primer and paint. Youll complete your work in a shorter amount of time, and your new paint job will last a lot longer.

For more information on every aspect of home painting, visit the Paint Quality Institutes new website at http://www.paintquality.com, or check out blog.paintquality.com.

Since 1989, The Paint Quality Institute has been educating people on the advantages of using quality interior and exterior paints and coatings. The Paint Quality Institute's goal is to help educate consumers, contractors and designers by providing information on the virtues of quality paint as well as color trends and decorating with paint through a variety of instructional platforms and conferences, and traditional and new media vehicles.

Akihabara outfit aims to become a hub for hardware startups

    - March 28, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Clustered electronics stores, maid cafes and the home of idol group AKB48 Tokyos Akihabara district is famous for many things.

And the list of unique spots may get even longer, as the district now has a large-scale facility for hardware startups to create innovative products.

The shared space, called DMM.make AKIBA, opened in November. Tokyo-based DMM.com, which runs online malls and video streaming services, launched the facility to offer pretty much everything that people need to start manufacturing hardware. The facility not only boasts 500 million worth of state-of-the-art equipment, but also offers technical support, consulting services, office space and a chance to garner funding.

While Internet venture firms can create services through one computer, becoming a hardware manufacturer from zero is tough, said Kenzo Yoshida of DMM.com, who oversees the DMM.make AKIBA facility.

Running hardware startups costs a lot. Youll need space and manufacturing machines, so you cant do it with one computer, Yoshida said in a recent interview. We think we can help in that sense.

DMM.make AKIBA has two main floors. While one is dedicated to office space, the other, called Studio, is like a jack of all trades for hardware startups.

Studio looks like a small factory, boasting more than 100 manufacturing machines and tools for hardware-makers to create a variety of things, including metal molds, prototype gadgets and robots.

Some of the more expensive machines would normally be difficult for a startup to access.

For instance, it has a five-axis CNC (computerized numerical control) machining center, which is capable of automated precise machining of complex designs using materials like steel, based on data entered into a computer.

Studio also has other cutting tools, including a laser cutter and drill press to fill different needs for cutting processes.

Local doctors offering procedure to help ease back pain

    - March 28, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Severe back pain can change a person's life and take them away from the activities they enjoy.

That is what happened with Kevin Lee, of Dartmouth. However, life is getting back to normal after he tried a non-invasive procedure that eliminated his pain in a matter of hours.

"I just may move a certain way or bend over a certain way, and all of a sudden, I'm done and I can't get up," said Lee. "These episodes where I'd be flat on my back, and it would take a week to get back on my feet."

That was tough for Lee to handle. At 64 years old, he was very active and spent time every week rowing or steering a whale boat in New Bedford Bay. The boats are big, and the work can be grueling.

"29 feet long, weighs 927 pounds, 6 foot at the beam, five rowers, one steering. We can row out into rough waters. We can take pretty heavy chop," Lee said.

Chronic lower back pain eventually took Lee out of the boat. He was often unable to walk or standup straight. When the pain flared up, he had to use a cane or even a walker to get around.

"I wasn't mowing my lawn. I wasn't stacking my own firewood. I wasn't able to play with my grandchildren," said Lee.

He saw a spinal surgeon, but they couldn't help.

Eventually, he ended up at a pain management clinic at Brigham & Women's Health Care Center in Foxborough. He met Dr. Pradeep Dinakar, a neurologist and interventional pain management specialist, who realized he was suffering from sacroiliac joint pain on his right side.

"You're in pain, you don't exercise. Your core becomes weak. A weak core makes things worse. It gets to the point that you're debilitated," said Dinakar. "This technique definitely breaks the cycle."

Exhibitions: Get to Know Dan Kiley, the Designer Behind America's Best Modernist Landscape Works

    - March 28, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

In a career spanning much of the 20th century, late American landscape architect Dan Kiley designed over 1,000 projects all over the U.S., including the grounds of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, the Miller Garden (a collaboration with Modernist great Eero Saarinen) in Columbus, Indiana, and the leafy atrium in the Ford Foundation headquarters in New York City (recently named a landmark interior.) Despite these famous credentials, Kiley, who passed away in 2004 at age 91, is far from widely-recognized himself. In an effort to rectify this, the Cultural Landscape Foundation decided to launch Landscape Architecture Legacy of Dan Kiley, a comprehensive traveling exhibit celebrating Kiley's far-reaching influence on our built environment. The show, which made its NYC debut at the Center for Architecture last night, features 45 newly-commissioned photographs of 27 representative Kiley work, plus updates on the current state of each project.

Inaugurated at the Boston Architectural College in fall 2013, the show is apparently booked till 2017, a fact that TCLF president Charles Birnbaum thinks signals greater public recognition for Kiley at last. And that is critical, because the upshot of honoring Kiley's work is also calling attention to their stewardship. The Kiley Garden () in Tampa, Florida, for example, is currently rated as "starting to falter" by the TCLF, despite recent efforts to restore it.

As the Tampa Bay Times details, Tampa-based landscape architect Ron Sil spearheaded a $4.7M restoration of the Kiley's rooftop checkerboard garden, which had fallen into despair and began leaking water to the garage underneath. Completed in fall 2010, the effort saw a complete reconstruction of the garden as Kiley had designed it, a process that involved following the precise mathematical formula Kiley used to place the concrete and grass patches. Still, the TCLF believes there's much to be done, including replanting the more than 100 crape myrtles trees that were removed for the restoration process.

Below, a photo of Kiley at the "Air Garden" he designed for the U.S. Air Force Academy, followed by a stroll through a dozen more of his projects featured in the show.
