The window-cleaning chain Window Genie has arrived in the Lehigh Valley.

After more than a decade working as a technician and field manager for the Sparta, New Jersey, location, Jerry Mastrofilippo Jr. decided to strike out on his own. He opened a Window Genie earlier this month inSalisbury Township.

Mastrofilippo, a Lower Macungie Townshiphusband and father of two, said work-life balance was a big part of his decision to become a franchisee.

"While I had a great boss and enjoyed the job, I felt ready to be my own boss," he said Tuesday. "Since getting married and having kids I wanted to find a way to have my own say in balancing work while still being able to be there for my wife and kids as much as possible."

Right now, Mastrofilippo's Window Genie is a one-man operation, but he plans to hire two employees in the coming months.

Cincinnati-based Window Genie has 210 locations operated by 77 franchise owners in 24 states. Window Genie is expanding and expects to have 100 franchisees by year's end.

"We're a nationally ranked franchise and one of the fastest growing," said Mastrofilippo, noting that all of the company's technicians pass background checks. "We're very excited to be in the area."

In addition to window cleaning, the company provides window tinting, pressure washing and other cleaning services. Window Genie's primarily services residential customers, but also performs services at commercial spaces, Mastrofilippo said.

Falls are serious at any age, but are particularly dangerous for people age 65 and older. Falls among older adults are the leading cause of injury deaths and the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma.

Older adults should take these precautions to reduce the risk of falling:

* Increase lower body strength. Work with your doctor and physical therapist to develop an appropriate and effective exercise plan.

* Have your vision and hearing tested often. Even small changes in sight and hearing can make you less stable.

* Look carefully at floor surfaces in public buildings. Many floors are made of highly polished marble or tile that can be very slippery. Stay away from a freshly washed floor.

* Have all the medicines you take reviewed by a doctor or pharmacist to reduce side effects such as dizziness, confusion, disorientation or slowed reflexes.

* Stand up slowly after eating, lying down or resting.

* Use a shoulder bag, fanny pack or backpack to leave hands free.

* Make sure your sofas and chairs are a good height for you, so that you can get into and out of them easily.

* Wear rubber-soled, low-heeled shoes (inside and outside).
