Canada's telecom regulator says four air duct cleaning companies paid a total of $55,000 as part of a settlement following violations for unsolicited phone calls to potential customers.
After consumers complained about violations to Canada's Unsolicited Telecommunications Rules the so-called "Do Not Call" list that bans unsolicited business offers via phone theCanadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission launched an investigation into nine Toronto-area duct cleaning companies.
In addition to the $55,000 paid by fourcompanies, the regulator also says it issued notices of violation accompanied by monetary penalties totalling $94,000 for five more.
"We are pleased to report that four of the nine companies cooperated with the investigations and have voluntarily ceased making unsolicited telemarketing calls to Canadians," the CRTC's chief compliance and enforcement officerManon Bombardier said in a statement.

These five companieswere issued a notice of violation and an administrative monetary penalty, and now have 30 days to respond:
All nine companies used foreign call centres to make the unauthorized calls,and the CRTCsays it sent warning letters to seven call centres located in Pakistan, India and the U.S.
"The CRTC reminds telemarketers that it is their responsibility to adhere to the rules, whether they make the calls themselves or through a third party in Canada or abroad," the regulator said in a release.
Since being implemented in 2008, more than 12.8 million Canadians have signed up to be on the Do Not Call list. The CRTC says Canadians can register their numbers, verify whether a number is on the List or file a complaint about a telemarketer by calling 1-866-580-DNCL (3625) or visitingwww.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca.
So far, the CRTC has issued monetary penalties worth over $6 millionand other penalties worth $741,000 for violations to the list.

Duct cleaning companies pay $55,000 for cold-calling to drum up sales
Nine companies linked to illegal telemarketing calls about duct-cleaning services have been named and shamed by the CRTC.
Four companies have already paid fines totalling $55,000, while another five are on notice for a combined $94,000 in penalties.
The nine companies, all based in the Greater Toronto Area, were identified by the CRTC during a lengthy and labour-intensive investigation, after consumers complained about receiving annoying sales pitches.
The CRTC found the companies were using foreign call centres for their telemarketing, which were not respecting the national do not call list.
HR Home Services was fined $3,000, Bridge Home Services Inc. paid $6,000, and Cambridge Heating Services and Top Line Air Duct Cleaning Inc. owed $23,000 each for breaking telemarketing rules.
The CRTC said the following companies have 30 days to plead their cases or pay their fines: Aqua Duct Cleaning Services ($9,000), N. Bro Transport Inc. ($14,000), Kareem Duct Cleaning ($15,000), Goodlife Home Services Inc. ($16,000) and Toronto Breeze Air Duct Cleaning Services Inc. ($40,000).
The do not call list now has more than 12.8 million numbers that should not be dialled by telemarketers.
The CRTC says it has issued fines totalling more than $6 million since the registry was launched in 2008, in addition to other penalties amounting to $741,000.

The state Department of Transportation is assessing the situation after a retaining wall supporting a bridge on Route 345 in Elmhurst Twp. toppled into the stream below.
The bridge, which spans Roaring Brook, remains open in both directions, PennDOT spokesman James May said from the scene.
The whole wall just fell forward and landed in the creek below, he said. The bridge itself is not in any danger of collapsing. Were going to be able to (maintain) traffic on the bridge.
PennDOT planned to set up barriers blocking off the affected portion of the road Monday night. The department was also seeking bids from contractors to begin making emergency repairs as soon as this morning, he said.
Repairs likely will take several months to complete.
