Chandler Demolition is based out of Memphis and is one of the construction groups working on the Crosstown Building.

However, in 2014 a 21-year-old fell more than 40 feet to his death through a hole on the 10th floor, all the way to the sixth. It was a hole that the state says should have been covered up.

"I should be planning his wedding, his something else besides his funeral today," said Chris Holliday.

WMC Action News 5 introduced viewers to Holliday in October 2014 after his son Zach died fell to his death. The two worked together.

"Me and my boss Travis started at the bottom and we sort of met in the middle, but Travis heard his phone ringing first," said Holliday.

According to a state report, Zach wasn't specifically trained to recognize certain job hazards. It also states the exposed hole he fell through was in a fenced in area, but wasn't covered like it was supposed to be - something his father admitted workers knew about last year.

"Me along with a lot of other people didn't cover this hole up," said Holliday.

Chris says he was recently fired by the demolition company after 20 years and couldn't talk on the advice of his lawyer.

"He was telling me what to do sometimes you know, it was great. I was proud of him, I was really proud of him," said Chris Holliday in a 2014 interview.

Demolition on the Superior BayfrontInn on Highway 53 began Thursday, paving the way for new development.

The motel, built in 1968, was sold to Oliver Companies, the current owner of the property, in 2000. However, the inn closed its doors for good after the tourist season last year.

Seth Oliver, a representative for Oliver Companies, says, "so we ran it for as long as we felt it was the useful life, maybe a couple years longer, and now its time for something else."

According to Oliver, after demolition is complete, the company is hoping the fresh space combined with an empty lot behind the demolition site will be used to house a new hotel. In addition, the new structure would be perpendicular to the Holiday Express on the adjacent property allowing for further development. Oliver says of the new possibilities, "it would create an opening in the front for some other venue, whether its food, retail, or something like that."

However, Oliver says the city is slowing the process for new development. He claims that although they have not created any hurdles, "they've just been radio silent."

Demolition is expected to be complete within a couple weeks.

Representatives from the city of Superior were not available for comment at the time this article was published.

Demolition Begins on Superior Bayfront Inn

On Friday, Brandenburg Industrial Service crews began the demolition of one of the General Electric buildings along Broadway and next to McCulloch Park.

After being a major employer in Fort Wayne for more than a century and employing 10,000 at one time, the building is part of the GE campus which closed for good in 2014.

GE spokesman Matt Conkrite said demolition will continue for a few weeks and should be completed in about a month.

Last year, this building had been gutted due to extensive water and mold damage to the interior. In the process of cleaning out the nonloadbearing internal structures, the restraints on some exterior brickwork were temporarily compromised. No danger exists today. However, all buildings are subject to the effects of weather and atmospheric changes. So the cleaning efforts on this building have accelerated the need to bring it down, Conkrite wrote in the announcement.

Once the building's faade is removed, the building frame will be gradually taken down with special hydraulic equipment designed for minimal impact to the surrounding area. As a precaution, temporary lane closures on Broadway may occur during this process.

GE is actively discussing future options with the city of Fort Wayne regarding the property, Conkrite wrote.

After the company announced plans to demolish the building, Mayor Tom Henry said the city has appreciated GE's openness and willingness to work with the city to determine how to best utilize a large area of land in an important corridor of the city.

I'm encouraged that we're in position to work collaboratively with GE to develop a viable plan for the property as we invest in the future and build on the momentum we're experiencing in our community, he said.

There are no plans at this time to demolish any of the other 12 buildings on the 32-acre the site, he said.

It's not clear the fate of the other buildings on the campus, including the huge former manufacturing plant on the west side of Broadway. The company is in discussions with Fort Wayne officials to determine the future of the property. The building being torn down was built in 1911. Some buildings on the GE campus were there in the 1880s.
