Renovation Solutions: Designing the ultimate outdoor kitchen

    - March 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

This built-in BBQ is part of an outdoor kitchen.

The outdoor entertaining season is almost here. Even with the occasional spring showers, the pleasant weather lately is practically begging us to take dinner parties outside. It is hard to imagine spring and summer without a little outdoor cooking.

Eighty percent of all U.S. households have a grill or smoker, according to a 2013 study by Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association, with 60 percent of those using their grill or smoker year-round, not just in the peak season of May to September.

The backyard culinary experience has moved far beyond a simple barbecue on the patio. Manufacturers of appliances and cabinetry are now producing products to create complete outdoor kitchens.

A trip to the nearest home-improvement center will confirm the wide range of free-standing barbecues that are available. Pushing aside the lowly kettle barbecue, huge, stainless steel barbecue behemoths stand ready to meet a griller's every need.

Barbecues don't just grill anymore. Some come equipped with rotisseries and can double as smokers. Additional stovetop burners are also available in some models, so you can prepare the whole meal without ever stepping foot inside the "real" kitchen.

For some, a giant, all-inclusive barbecue just isn't enough. These intrepid grillers want more an actual outdoor kitchen.

State attorney move to new building concludes Monday

    - March 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The State Attorneys Office has been moving into its new building for weeks now, but the official first day in the new digs will be Monday.

The Haydon Burns city hall annex and the old Duval County courthouse on Bay Street are now empty.

The new office, which has been named after former State Attorney and Mayor Ed Austin, is located in the old federal courthouse at 311 W. Monroe St. The building is across Pearl Street from the new Duval County Courthouse, which opened in 2012, and is being renovated as a final piece in a judicial complex in that end of downtown.

It is a dream come true to be able to honor Mr. Austin, State Attorney Angela Corey said. We are grateful to City Councilman Doyle Carter for sponsoring the municipal ordinance which names our new office after this great Jacksonville leader.

The move was originally scheduled to occur late in 2014. It was delayed when the City Council voted to spend $1.2 million to create deposition rooms and facilities for civil citation and diversionary programs on the first floor of the 1930s-vintage building that once also held the downtown post office but has been vacant for years.

City officials overseeing the construction at one point planned to leave most of the old federal buildings first floor shelled lined with drywall but otherwise empty to keep the judicial complex inside a total $350 million budget the council set in 2008.

The fuller renovation of that floor was approved once project managers felt sure the money would meet other bills. City officials said the total cost of the renovation was not yet known, but previous estimates were about $26 million.

City spokeswoman Aleizha Batson said the move began Feb. 20 with furniture and files being relocated. Most of the staff left the old office March 3 and have been working out of the seventh floor of the Ed Ball building.

The contractor had continued to work on punch list items, which are generally minor issues to complete the project, while staff have been working in their temporary offices, Batson said.

The building received its temporary certificate of occupancy March 13, and the final certificate of occupancy will occur after the punch list items are complete.

Vic 457 workers lived 'in the office'

    - March 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Overseas construction workers on 457 visas had to live in the office and sleep on the floor after wages dried up, a union says.

The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union says 12 workers brought to Australia by Schneider Elevators Australasia had been working on a Victorian building site.

"When their pay suddenly stopped six weeks ago, (they) had nowhere to live, no shelter except sharing the floor of their employer's office," AMWU assistant Victorian secretary Craig Kelly said on Friday.

AAP has contacted Schneider Elevators managing director Terence Donnelly for comment.

Mr Kelly said the 457 visa program cruelly preyed on the hopes of overseas workers.

"These workers were brought in on a promise of lucrative wages to send back to their families but find themselves exploited, paid well below local industry standards," he said.

"The company clearly knew there was an issue, as they allowed the workers to sleep in the office, and even cook food in a kitchenette."

Mr Kelly said the company owed the 11 Filipino and one British worker more than $172,000.

He said Schneider Elevators also deducted visa charges and "building industry fees" from their wages.

Mr Kelly said five Australian employees had also been denied wages.

Charleston residents advise officials on new city bike and trail plan

    - March 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    ANDREW BROWN | Gazette

Ted Armbrecht III, a South Hills resident and avid cyclist, points out some of the locations in Charleston where he believes bike routes could be improved.

Efforts to rethink and redesign the walkways and bike paths of West Virginias capital city are underway.

On Wednesday, city officials and employees with Alta Planning and Design held open-door meetings to discuss the creation of the citys Bike and Trail Master Plan.

The goal of this is to create a master plan that will be implemented over several years, said city manager David Molgaard.

The meetings were the first steps taken in a 10-month process that will eventually provide a road map for how to improve bike routes throughout the city, something the people in attendance appreciated.

The city should be commended on what they have done so far, said Ted Armbrecht III, a resident of South Hills.

While the public meetings were meant to define residents expectations, they were also used to pinpoint where the citys infrastructure is currently failing cyclists.

Jarret Smith, who lives in Davis Creek but works in Kanawha City, said there are certain areas of Charleston that are safer than others. While Smith said he feels relatively safe cycling along the roads in the East End, he said biking in parts of Kanawha City and on the Patrick Street Bridge can be a little dicey.

All the bridges are a little disconcerting, said Jill Watkins, a resident of South Charleston, adding that when you bike across the citys bridges you usually sit above the guardrails.

Boulevard Gardens project in Kuirau Park to become reality

    - March 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Stage One of Rotorua Lakes Councils proposed Boulevard Gardens project in Kuirau Park is set to become a reality as a result of a $273,000 grant from the Francis Moss Boord Trust.

The gardens project is a component of the councils wider strategy to redevelop and upgrade Kuirau Park over a number of years, improving connectivity with the inner city and encouraging more widespread use of the park.

Rotorua mayor Steve Chadwick said the council was extremely grateful to the Francis Moss Boord Trust for its generous donation to a special community project that will be enjoyed by many people - locals and visitors alike - for many years to come.

"It seems very fitting that a philanthropic trust set up through the will of Rotoruas well-respected former MP and mayor, the late Ray Boord, will contribute to such an important community project as this. The Boulevard Gardens project will now gather real momentum because of this partnership between the trust and the council.

"We acknowledge the trustees foresight and were particularly delighted that theyve been able to share our vision for this very exciting project. Were sure former mayor Boord would approve."

Speaking on behalf of the Francis Moss Boord Trust, Perpetual Guardians client manager Jan Middlemiss said the $273,000 grant for establishing new gardens, walkways and picnic areas in Kuirau Park was the most significant distribution of funds ever made by the trust.

"The project fits very well with the objectives of the trust to benefit the Rotorua community, and it certainly honours the legacy left by Ray Boord."

The Boulevard Gardens concept is for a series of five specialty and feature gardens in Kuirau Park. They will be connected by a combined public walkway and cycle path, integrated with the new Green Corridor currently under construction, and linking key attractions and activities within the unique geothermal reserve.

Sculpture within a landscaped entrance area will be part of a meeting and information point to help form a gateway into the inner city. This entrance will lead into Kuirau Park and to five new gardens, including a contemporary New Zealand garden of Rotorua-specific native vegetation, an interactive scent garden, a hosta garden for spring and summer months, and climbing gardens with vertical structures.

Stage One will run from near the Ranolf/Haupapa streets intersection side of Kuirau Park and meander through to the main foot pool and public restrooms area. This will be implemented in steps over the next 18 months as weather and resources allow, with completion and official opening scheduled for Spring/Summer of 2016.
