LaPlace school demolition contract clears committee

    - March 18, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The demolition contract for Lake Pontchartrain Elementary School has cleared committee and comes up for a vote of the St. John the Baptist Parish School Board on Thursday (March 19). That's 2 and 1/2 years afterHurricane Isaac's flooding destroyed the LaPlace school.

The board postponed votingon the contract March 3, saying the lowest responsive bidder, ARC Abatement 1 Ltd., hadn't shown compliance with the school system's disadvantaged business enterprise policy. The company submitted a bid of $615, 278 to raze the 26-year-old school.

Ali Burl, chairman of the board's Land and Facilities Committee, said Wednesday that the company has complied with the policy. The committee met Tuesday and approved the contract, he said.

"Their documents are in order," Burl said. "They came in at a very reasonable rate, and we'll make a recommendation to the full board that they be awarded the contract."

Board members have come under fire from parents in the past two years because of the pace of bringing Lake Pontchartrain Elementary and East St. John High Schoolin Reserve back online. For more than a year after the 2012 hurricane, both projects stalled as the board bickered over awarding construction contracts.

In January, the School Board implemented a disadvantaged business enterprise policy that's aimed at helping minority- and women-owned businesses get construction contracts. It requires firms that respond to bid proposals or contract with the school system to name a qualified disadvantaged firm that will be working on the project, or demonstrate a good-faith effort to hire such a company.

If the board approves the demolition contract Thursday, a notice to proceed would be issued within two weeks and demolition work started in April, Burl said. "People should start seeing trucks going over there, and the building starting to come down," in early April, he said.

The school has been closed since Isaac flooded it. Its students, from pre-kindergarten through eighthgrade, are being taught at East St. John Elementary School in LaPlace.

The School Board plans to build a new school, estimated to cost $22 million, at the Lake Pontchartrain Elementary site on U.S. 51. Opening is projected at the start of the 2017-18 academic year.

East St. John High, also closed since being damaged by Isaac, remains on track to re-open this fall, Burl said. Contractors are working to brick the front of the main building, and board members are planning a visit, possibly next week. "They just wanted to see the status of how things are going," Burl said.

London Health Sciences Centre revokes proposed demolition of buildings near Parkwood Hospital

    - March 18, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Londons largest hospital is backing off the demolition of a former war veterans village, a plan which would uproot the citys tree-planting booster and likely doom a below-radar radar museum.

ReForest London and the Secrets of Radar Museum are both tenants in the Western Counties Pavilions near Parkwood Hospital, on London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) lands on the edge of the Westminster Ponds.

Museum board officials were told it would have to vacate the Huron Pavilion in 90 days because its being demolished.

ReForest London, which, along with several environmental groups, rents space in the Bruce Pavilion, had expected to hear the same news last Friday but a meeting with a hospital official was cancelled.

Tuesday, after being contacted by The Free Press, LHSC president Murray Glendining issued a statement saying lease-termination notice was premature and would be revoked.

We recognize that the Westminster Ponds area is important to the community and we commit to broad consultation with all the key stakeholders before decisions are made, said Glendining in the statement.

The Secrets of Radar Museum has been a tenant since 2003. Curator Maya Hirschman said it operates on a shoestring budget and had negotiated cheap rent with David Crockett, then LHSCs vice-president of facilities management

He felt very strongly the hospital should be a good community citizen and we trusted him, said Hirschman.

But Crockett has since retired and been replaced by Dipesh Patel.

Hirschman said hospital officials told museum board members the old buildings were being demolished because they were too costly to heat and maintain.

Demolition of old Hills Department Store building in Norton Shores to begin this month

    - March 18, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

NORTON SHORES, MI -- A long awaited demolition project that will lead to a more picturesque Norton Shores will begin later this month.

City officials announced Monday that Melching Inc. Demolition & Dismantling of Nunica will start razing the half-demolished building that once housed a Hills Department Store on March 27.

The work is a response to a court order by Muskegon County Chief Circuit Judge William C. Marietti.

The judge, in a trial opinion dated Jan. 6, said the building owner had 90 days to finish demolishing the structure located near the corner of Seaway Drive and Seminole Road.

Melching, who demolished the Sappi Paper Mill, will raze the structure on behalf of owner Talmer Bancorp, Inc., formerly known as Michigan Commerce Bank and Muskegon Commerce Bank.

The site, which also once housed an expanded Irwin's Home Furnishing location, had been part of the original, 17-acre Eastowne urban village plan.

However, former Eastowne developer, Town Centres LLC of Holland, lost the property to the bank, which lent the company money to fund the urban village project.

Scott Rogalla, general manager at Melching, said Wednesday the project will take about 2 to 3 weeks to complete. The company recently obtained a permit from Norton Shores to complete the work and is also required to give the Michigan Department of Environment Quality a 10-day notice to complete the demolition, he said.

Mayor Gary Nelund said the permit the company took out implied the work will be completed by April 20, two weeks after the court-ordered deadline, but the city is unbothered.

"If they need the two extra weeks, they're fine. We've been waiting for this to happen for six years so we can wait an extra two weeks," Nelund said.

Several weeks ago I was heading out the door to a dinner party. In one arm I held a big salad bowl. In the other was a glass jar of salad dressing I had just made. As I tried to manuever open our heavy front door, the jar slipped out of my hand. In slow motion I yelled "Noooooo!" as the glass shattered on the wood floor and the contents splattered all over the wall and our cheap apartment carpet.

You guys, I was so upset. I was already late to this party and all I wanted to do was sit down in the middle of this puddle of oil and vinegar and cry. Instead I picked up the glass pieces, did a quick wipe up with paper towels and left the big clean up until later. Over the next few weeks I tried every carpet cleaner at my local grocery stores (yes, plural). Nothing was working. And my front entry way continued to look like this.

Ididn't want visitors because it was so embarrassing. No, this condo is not our own but I like to live in cleanliness so I continued to try to clean it with no luck. Then my mom came to visit and suggested I try white vinegar. I didn't really give it much thought because it seemed either too easy or too smelly.

Well, this weekend I had enough. I searched for a remedy and found it! Of course, it contains white vinegar because my mother is always right. So I'm going to share with you my wisdom because I'm sure I'm not the first person to spill oil-based something on their carpet (right?).

    1. Scrape up the liquid (I had already done this weeks ago).

    2. Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch on stain to let absorb for 10 minutes and then vacuum.

    3. Mix one tablespoon clear dishwashing liquid and one tablespoon white vinegar with two cups of warm water.
