Pittsburgh is demolishing the historic John A. Brashear factory in the North Side because a wall collapsed Monday night onto an occupied apartment building next door, a city official said Tuesday.
Brashear, a world-renown scientist and philanthropist, worked in the factory to make mirrors and lenses for telescopes until his death in 1920.
The National Registry of Historic Places lists Brashear's house and factory on Perrsyville Avenue. The factory has been vacant for nearly 20 years, and was in poor condition, neighbors said.
It's tragic, said Janet Gunter, a longtime Perry Hilltop resident. No one stepped up to preserve the building. Everybody knew it was in bad shape. Now it's gone and you can't replace history.
Maura Kennedy, who heads the city's Department of Permits Licenses and Inspections, said she issued an emergency demolition order because a wall collapsed about 10:30 p.m. Monday.
Jaydell Minniefield Construction Services Inc. of Hazelwood began razing it Tuesday morning. The city is paying the company $235,000, Kennedy said.
It's unfortunate, but the structure has gotten to a point where it is imminently dangerous, so we needed to take it down immediately, Kennedy said.
The American Red Cross is providing shelter to residents of the apartment building, which was evacuated. Residents won't be permitted to return until city inspectors certify the building is safe, she said.
Brashear was a founder and director of the Allegheny Observatory in Riverview Park and created lenses for telescopes worldwide. He was known in Pittsburgh as Uncle John for the philanthropic work he did and once was named as Pennsylvania's most eminent citizen.
His home still stands on Perrysville Avenue near the factory. He died in 1920 at age 79. His ashes are interred with his wife's in Allegheny Observatory.

Melbourne's CBD will run out of land for new office and apartment buildings within 35 years as space is gobbled up by skyscrapers, unlikelyever to be demolished in our lifetimes.
As they age, older high-rise towers will instead be given new leases of lifewith expensive renovations.
No building taller than 200 metres has ever legally been demolished anywhere in the world and property experts say most tall towers will continue to be preserved into the future.
The city is already home to 30 skyscrapers taller than 150 metres, more than in Sydney, Beijing or London. Another 40are proposed or under construction, including the 100-storey Australia 108 (pictured below).

"If there is nothing structurally wrong I would expect [these buildings] would last decades and decades up to 100 years," head of research for property adviser Savills Australia, Tony Crabb said.
Towers looking a bit tired after about 40 years are generally given facelifts, he said. Entirelift and airconditioning systems often need to be pulled out and replaced at a cost to the building's body corporate, which, he added, should already be putting aside money for the task.
Victoria's former state government architect, John Denton, warned that Melbourne was creating "a new problem for the future" in new poor-quality apartment buildings, which he said could need major repairs within a few decades.
Co-founder of architectural firm Denton Corker Marshall, he said that while it was technically possible to demolish high-rise apartment towers,it would be difficult to organise with each apartment on 50 or 60 levels owned by a different person.

The developers of the new Water Street apartment community in downtown Dayton will begin construction this week on the $30 million project.
A groundbreaking ceremony with Mayor Nan Whaley and local business leaders and residents will be held on Thursday at the site of the planned complex near the banks of the Great Miami River.
The residential component of the Water Street District will feature 215 luxury rental apartments, a mixture of two-story townhomes and 1-2 bedroom flats.
The apartment community will feature river views, a swimming pool, outdoor gathering areas, a business center and fitness center membership. The first units will be complete and available for occupancy in late August, according to a release from the city.
The Water Street District residential community is the first new large-scale rental housing development constructed in downtown Dayton since the early 2000s.
Water Street is being developed by Columbus-based Crawford Hoying Development Partners and Dayton-based Woodard Real Estate Resources. The project will contribute amenities to the heart of the city including a fitness center, a bank branch and restaurants.
The $45 million Water Street District includes four elements:
A 50,000-square-foot commercial building fronting Patterson Boulevard. PNC Bank is the anchor tenant of the building.
215 luxury rental apartments.
A three-level public parking garage serving the Webster Station community.

TORONTO- Utility crews have been busy over the past couple of weeks working to restore power to thousands of homes across the GTA. The culprit in most of these outages has been a single hydro pole fire. One pole fire can affect power tens of thousands of residents in a given community.
The odd thing is, these fires happen when we get rain or drizzle in the winter months.
The unlikely contributor is the road salt we use to melt snow and ice.
John McClean is the Vice President, Operations at Power Stream, whichserves municipalities in the 905 and 705 regions, and saidthe fireshappen every winter when we get an accumulation of contamination on the insulators that carry our conductors typically salt contamination.
Normally, McCleans crews would be washing the salt off the poles but they can only do that when the temperatures warm up above minus 5 degrees Celsius. We didnt get anywhere near that temperature through January and February so the salt built up in the insulators.
When the temperature finally flirted with freezing, we got rain and drizzle. Mix the water with the salt and youve got a nearly perfect conductor. It means the current finds its way into the grounded pole. But the pole is a poor conductor, so it acts like the element in your oven. It resists the current, stores the heat and it combusts.
And youre wondering how that road salt gets all the way to thetop of that hydro pole.
McClean says the salt gets kicked into the air by passing traffic. But he and his team have noticed an increased in pole fire incidents since the province and municipalities have started using a salt solution brine to deal with icy roads.

Visitors to the Coronation Street Tour can now pop into the Kabin and visit Kevin Websters garage after bosses opened up a raft of new attractions. Bolton News reporter Kate McMullin hit the cobbles to find out more.
ONE of Weatherfields most famous landmarks has been added to the popular Coronation Street tour . . . and its likely even grumpy character Norris would approve of the latest attraction.
For the Kabin - where Norris sells newspapers - is one of the new additions to the famous cobbles. Visitors can also take a sneak peek inside Websters Auto Centre and Devs takeaway Prima Doner. Fans can even go inside and have their pictures taken behind the counter.
The Quay Street tour which launched a year ago after filming of the popular soap was moved from the Old Granada Studios to Media City in Salford - has had more than 420,000 visitors in its first 12 months.
The cast filmed their last scene on the Quay Street set on December 20, 2013, after 33 years of production at Granada Studios.
The 50-minute guided tour takes fans behind the scenes of one of the nations best loved soaps.
They can follow the path that the stars would have taken, starting in the green room and moving down the corridor to see dressing rooms belonging to some of the shows longest-standing cast members.
Fans can also see some of the iconic outfits worn by the cast before going in to the studios where filming took place.
Tour general manager Andy Begg said: We are really excited to include The Kabin as part of the tour. It is one of the sets that fans really want to see and now they can.
We are also sure that they will love the experience of going inside Prima Doner and getting to see what it looks like on TV.

Ask any business owner and she or he will tell you that in order to survive, an enterprise has to be sensitive to changing markets and quick to adapt to those changes. The publics taste is famously fickle.
Scott Carston, owner of Carpet One Napa Valley, can attest to that. He will mark the 20th anniversary of his business in April.
When we started probably 80 to 90 percent of our business was carpet, Carston said recently. Now its about 50/50 with laminate and other types of flooring. The fastest growing trend is luxury vinyl tile, he said. Todays customers are very style conscious, and prefer a lot more patterns and unique looks, Carston said.
You might say Carston carried on a family tradition; his dad was in flooring in Santa Rosa. Thats where Scott learned the basics of the business.
Carpet One Napa has 13 employees and a full showroom at its 14,000-square-foot Enterprise Way location. Once a prospective client has picked out a preferred type and style of flooring, the salesman visits the location, either commercial or residential, to measure the area for a free estimate on installation. The company offers in-house financing.
In addition to flooring, Carpet One Napa offers shutters, drapes and other window products with installation. With 1,000 stores worldwide, Carpet One has enormous buying power and more than a dozen exclusive brands, according to the business website. Selection is vast, with about 4,000 different products on hand, and thousands more available, Carston said.
As a buy-in co-op, the business is locally owned and controlled, something Carston feels connects him to the community.
Eighty percent of our business is in the community. I think its important to shop local, he said.
Carston says the business gives back to the community by contributing to Little League, juvenile diabetes research and music in schools.
