Sammie and Rainia Washington relocated to the Washington region from Atlanta. While space is much harder to come by in this part of the country than in the South, they did their research to find a house with ample room to spread out, both indoors and outdoors.
The serene drive down Route 108 leading to a new development in Montgomery County hints at whats to come when entering Laytonsville Preserve, where the Washingtons moved last November. Large houses on one acre lots or more impressed them.
NVR Homes opened the luxury community last year and is now selling the first phase of 17 houses. Six have sold so far. Once completed, there will be three sections with about 60 houses in all. Each section has its own cul-de-sac.
The lot sizes and the area is what drew us to Laytonsville Preserve, Sammie said.
Double door entry: Laytonsville is a small, rural town near Gaithersburg and Olney, with a population of about 500. The landscape is still marked largely by farmland.
The development is about eight miles from Georgia Avenue.
There are five floor plans, including the Regents Park II, which is the model home and one of the largest plans offered. This house, along with many of the other plans, has an elevation that comes with a grand double-door entry.
The Regents Park II has four bedrooms, five bathrooms and a center hall floor plan that separates the formal living room from the formal dining room. Arched entryways from both the dining room and foyer lead into the spacious family room.
The model showcases a number of standard and optional features offered by the builder. The sunny kitchen has a center island that doubles as a breakfast bar and white cabinets contrast nicely with the dark granite countertops.

ST. LOUIS The $380 million effort to remake the Gateway Arch grounds and the area around the Arch is taking another step forward with demolition of the parking garage.
Demolition work that began last week is expected to take about three months. The 1,200-spot parking garage will make way for grass, pathways and gardens on the north part of the Arch grounds.
CityArchRiver, the foundation leading the renovation project, said there are plenty of other parking spots in the downtown area for Arch visitors. But business owners on Laclede's Landing, an area of shops, restaurants and bars near the Arch, said the garage was important for their customers.

Are you suffering from garage fever, biker dudes? Itching to hit the open road on a throaty American-made motorcycle, hug the curves, catch some scenery, feel the horsepower?
Subzero temperatures and record snowfall have made that impossible in most of the country this endless winter. Whats a gearhead to do, except wait for the thaw?
Thats where virtual reality steps in, with executives from Minnesota-based Victory Motorcycles hatching a promotion that uses Oculus Rift to give motorcycle enthusiasts a trip to Sturgis without leaving a trade show floor.
The simulated ride through the Badlands comes complete with 3D, 360-degree images of Needles Highway, a famous stretch of desert road in South Dakota, throttle control, sound effects and a tactile transducer to recreate the vibrations of a speeding bike.
The project, produced by digital agency space150, means to put butts on seats at high-traffic trade shows, which executives say is one of the best ways to move product. It rolled out at the recent Chicago International Motorcycle Show and will repeat, with additions and tweaks, at future events. It may also become part of a museum exhibit in New York.
If you sit for a ride, youre more likely to own one of our motorcycles, according to internal studies, said Lisa Grimm, director of public relations and emerging media at space150. So we wanted to use technology to create something immersive and solve a business challenge.
Victory Motorcycles joins a handful of companies using the Facebook-owned Oculus Rift and its VR competitors as a marketing tactic. HBO may have been the first to do so, with its Ascend the Wall experience for Game of Thrones at last years SXSW that reviewers called mind blowing.
More recently, Toyota created a simulation to warn teens about the dangers of distracted driving, and Mountain Dew showed what it would be like to glide along next to a pro skateboarder. Marriott took consumers to Maui and central London via its #GetTeleported Oculus Rift promotion, and Elle magazine has captured behind-the-scenes fashion shoots in recent months for virtual reality streaming.
The trend will likely continue and intensify, Grimm said, with some brands doing a better job than others in using the sexy, emerging technology.

A man walks past a Lumber Liquidatorsstore Thursday in Philadelphia. Retailer Lumber Liquidators says it stands by its products and will pay for the safety testing of laminate floors for qualifying customers.
TAMPA | Jacqueline Shabel said the smell hit her "like a ton of bricks."
A chemical odor oozed from 59 boxes of her new Lumber Liquidators laminate flooring last month. It filled her Tampa house and burned her nostrils, and she knew something was wrong.
"It was really, really strong," she said. "Just gnarly."
She opened her windows and waited for the sun to rise before calling the Lutz location where she bought the laminate.
"I spoke to them and they said, Oh yeah, don't worry about it,' kind of insinuating new car smell," she said.
So the California woman went through with the installation the latest addition to her local vacation home's remodel. But it still smelled.
Three days later, 60 Minutes reported the company's Chinese-made laminate flooring had high levels of formaldehyde, a carcinogen, though the company denies the claim.
"I have a 5-year-old son," Shabel said. "It was that horror as a parent."
Shabel isn't alone. An Orlando law firm is seeking class-action status after filing a federal complaint against Lumber Liquidators Friday on behalf of an Orlando couple. The firm, Knopf Bigger, is fielding calls from other concerned consumers.
