River Heritage Park now open; set for Memorial Day grand opening

    - March 12, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The grass seeding took off a lot better than Zachary Peterson expected, so now there's a place to sit and throw a picnic for anyone visiting Davenport's River Heritage Park.

The park along River Drive near where 3rd and4th streets connect is open to the public just in time for this week's early spring weather. Peterson, a landscape design architect for the city, called it a "soft launch" at Wednesday's Levee Improvement Commission meeting.

The big-deal opening is scheduled for Memorial Day, when he said the city will dedicate the park with a boulder etched with the names of thethose who made it possible.

With a gazebo, river walk and railing designed to mimic the Centennial Bridge arcs, there's something for visitors to see now apart from the river view.

The Davenport Rotary Club invested more than $100,000 in the construction of the gazebo. The city and state are investing about $725,000.

"We're definitely getting bang for our buck here," Peterson said.

One project that remains undone is construction of a bioswale. The city and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers continue to investigate clogged sewer infrastructure in the area.

"It's a real mess, but it's being worked on," Peterson said of the sewers.

Another future project that awaits private donations includes meandering paths through a prairie landscape on the west end of the park.

The Davenport City Council is expected to approve future plans at its April 8 meeting.

Lawn talk with Broncos' turf guru

    - March 12, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Carol O'Meara CSU Cooperative Extension

There is a little secret about lawns: They grab attention. Passersby, neighbors and family look over yards, making judgments. If you've ever felt the pressure to step up your game, take a few tips from Chris Hathaway, turf manager at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. The pro who keeps the field where the Denver Broncos plays knows firsthand the pressure of keeping a lawn looking good; thousands of fans judge his turf throughout a 16-week season. After leading the renovation of Sports Authority Field at Mile High, he took time to talk turf:

How did you know it was time to renovate? "We decided to move forward with the field renovation after the 2014 football season due to a couple factors. The first being the Grass Master system and the root zone were getting older and we were running into slight complications with both systems. Our soil heat system also required upgrades. The full-scale renovation will be complete in time for the beginning of the Denver Outlaws home opener" on May 3 in Major League Lacrosse.

Did you always know what type of turf you would install, or did you look at the merits and drawbacks of different kinds for the field?

"Sports turf industry employees make sure to talk frequently and exchange ideas and thoughts. Several consultations also took place with Graff's Turf farm (in Fort Morgan) on availability. HGT bluegrass was what was decided on. Our Dove Valley headquarters (in Englewod) uses HGT bluegrass on their practice field. It has held up well and proven to be durable during the Broncos in-season daily practice sessions."

Do you think an all-bluegrass field will require more maintenance than the Grass Master system? "I envision a couple of slight changes to our normal maintenance program, but nothing major. We intend to plant rye grass and bluegrass seed in to the playing surface to keep the playability at a high standard. We will also have the ability to re-sod any part of the field as needed. We didn't have the capability to re sod with Grass Master during the heavy use times of the year."

How will it compare to the Grass Master system for playability? "I think the playability of the new surface will be quite similar to the Grass Master system. The sod we install in April will be 1.5 inches thick and approximately 14 months old. The combination between the thick cut of and age of the sod gives us the strength and density to hold up to the heavy wear and tear of a NFL season."

How do you irrigate a field like this? "There are nine irrigation zones on the field. It looks similar to a residential lawn or irrigation at a park. The new field will contain four perimeter zones that run along the field service track. The other five zones are in the playing field. We have lowered the sprinkler heads below the surface. We fill in the gap with a product called Profile prior to games. We remove the Profile material postgame to prepare for our next irrigation cycle."

Do you have any advice for a homeowner who wants to renovate but doesn't know where to begin? "First ask yourself how you want to use the space and how it will be utilized. Think about maintenance and the time and expenses involved in maintaining it. Decide if you want turf grass, requiring regular maintenance, or do you prefer xeriscape, a system that will save both time and money? A combination of both is also a great option. There are ample landscaping options. Research on what works best for you and your space. You don't want to plant something that you will have to replace down the road due to poor planning. One other thing is if you live in an HOA-governed community, make sure to ask what they allow before planting anything. You don't want to renovate your landscape and later find out parts are not permissible and that it has to be removed."

Supporters memorialize Evelyn Miller, pray for justice

    - March 12, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

EVANSDALE | Justice for Evelyn Miller keeps hope alive for the families of other child victims still waiting for a day in court.

Supporters and family members gathered at Angels Park at Meyers Lake Wednesday for a candlelight vigil to remember Miller, who was just 5 years old in 2005 when her body was found in the Cedar River near Charles City.

A jury convicted Casey Frederiksen Tuesday of first-degree murder and first-degree sexual abuse in Miller's death. He faces a mandatory life term in prison with no possibility of parole when sentenced May 11.

Andy Christie, Evelyn's father, and Linda Christie, her grandmother, were among those who gathered to pray, share thoughts and release five pink sky lanterns one for each year of Miller's life which floated toward the heavens.

"It took 10 years," said Linda Christie, Miller's grandmother. "But in the end justice was served, and my granddaughter was given the justice we deserve."

The peaceful evening in Angels Park was a chance for family members to shake off the horrors of the court proceedings.

"That trial when I got home today I felt like I had been beaten with a bat all over my body, so much emotional strain," Christie said. "Waiting for the verdict was probably the hardest. But when that verdict came in I think there were tears of joy from everyone."

The vigil, she added, was "hope for Lyric and Elizabeth."

Cousins Lyric Cook-Morrissey, 10, and Elizabeth Collins, 8, disappeared July 13, 2012, while riding their bikes in Evansdale. Their bodies were found later in Seven Bridges Park in rural Bremer County. No one has been arrested for their deaths.

Elizabeth's parents, Drew and Heather Collins, were among those attending Miller's vigil.

M'sia considers border fencing to deter human trafficking

    - March 12, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Erecting security fences totalling 2,666km along the nations borders is being considered as a measure to stop smuggling and people trafficking.

The home ministry is conducting a feasibility study on the fencing which will also serve as a replacement for existing border fences that are in deplorable condition.

Each year, the government loses more than 7 billion ringgit (US$1.90 billion)to the smuggling of goods such as rice, petrol, diesel, alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, fertiliser and herbicides.

There is also the matter of firearms being smuggled into the country, stolen vehicles snuck into neighbouring countries and fake fashion brands making their way in.

But stopping the trafficking of people is also a major reason for putting up the fences.

The fencing is for our borders with Thailand, Indonesia and Brunei, and whats being studied is the type of fence, its height, total cost, how it will be guarded and if it needs to be electrified.
