When people move house they often refer to entering a new chapter of their lives or turning a new leaf. For Jim and Maureen Franks, either expression couldnt be more apt, as the couple are now leaving a former library they have lived in for almost 40 years.
And its not just any old library. Fitzroy House, their Victorian Gothic revival home, was built by the most eminent and fashionable architect of the time, Sir George Gilbert Scott, the man who also created the Albert Memorial, the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras Station and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, all in London.
He was commissioned to build the memorial library for Lewes MP Henry Fitzroy by his widow Hannah in 1862, and it was used by the town until 1958 and later turned into offices.
Striking: The Victorial Gothic revival property's clock tower, right, and left, the large octagonal atrium
It then faced demolition in the 1970s before locals moved to preserve the building, and quantity surveyor Jim Franks saw an opportunity to save the structure while turning it into his family home.
But now, in their mid to late 80s, the pair are finding the huge, 2,800 sq ft two-storey home right in the centre of the historic town of Lewes, East Sussex, just a little too much to cope with, and are looking to downsize while staying in the town. Fitzroy House is on the market for offers in excess of 1 million.
It was extraordinarily run-down and had been empty for six or seven years, says the Frankses daughter, Eleanor Austin.

MEXICO CITY Mexico's embattled attorney general is leaving the post to take a new cabinet-level job as head of urban and rural development.
Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam had weathered scathing criticism over his handling of the Sept. 26 disappearance of 43 students in southern Guerrero state.
Murillo Karam had also been criticized for being slow to investigate evidence that soldiers killed between 12 and 15 criminal suspects after they surrendered in June.
President Enrique Pena Nieto's office announced Friday that Murrillo Karam will be sworn in later today as head of the Department of Rural and Urban Development.
An official who was not authorized to be quoted by name said his replacement as attorney general will be a former senator and electoral-law prosecutor, Arely Gomez.

Patna/New Delhi, Feb 11 (IANS): Aiming to put pressure on Bihar Governor Keshri Nath Tripathi for inviting him to form the next government in the state, former chief minister Nitish Kumar reached New Delhi Tuesday to parade the legislators supporting him at Rashtrapati Bhavan Wednesday.
Embattled Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi Tuesday sought to play the "reservation card" as his cabinet approved reservation for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes in all government contracts of road construction up to Rs.50 lakh and reservation for poor upper castes in government jobs.
Earlier, Nitish Kumar and 130 legislators supporting him left for New Delhi in two batches, Janata Dal-United chief whip Shrawan Kumar said.
"In the first batch, 60 legislators, and in second batch, 70 legislators along with Nitish Kumar left for Delhi," he said in Patna.
Party MP K.C. Tyagi told IANS that Nitish Kumar had reached the national capital, and was likely to meet President Pranab Mukherjee Wednesday.
He said the party would urge the president to ask the governor to invite Nitish Kumar to form the government as he has the majority.
"Since we have not heard a decision from the governor, we have come to the president," Tyagi told IANS.
Meanwhile, Manjhi, who insisted that he remained chief minister till he fails to prove his majority in the state assembly, had called a cabinet meeting Tuesday where it was speculated that he may recommend dissolution of the state assembly. It was in the meeting that the decision on the quotas was taken.
A JD-U leader close to Manjhi, however, said he "may or may not recommend dissolution of the state assembly, but by holding a cabinet meeting, he wanted to send a strong message that he is still the chief minister".
Principal Secretary in the Cabinet Coordination Department B. Pradhan said the cabinet meeting approved reservation for SC/STs in all government contracts of Rs.50 lakh, as well as the proposal for reservation of poorest of the poor upper castes in government jobs.

Lorri Kreuschers extreme makeover started with an extreme personal loss.
Her husband of more than three decades died in 2010, just as they were beginning the process of building a house a couple of miles from their longtime home in Bloomington.
I was devastated, she said.
Theyd started clearing the lot and developing plans, but she put the project on hiatus. My heart wasnt in that anymore to go through all that by myself. I was left trying to figure out what in the world to do.
She found herself reluctant to leave the home where they had raised their family. I had dreams of selling the house and terribly regretting it, she said. So instead of building a new home, she stayed in her old one, grieving and adjusting to life on her own. Im very independent, she said. But I had never lived alone before.
After about a year, Kreuscher decided it was time to make a few home improvements.
I started tearing down trees, she recalled. Views were important to me. I love gardens and pretty things outside.
Then she went to see a neighbors remodeling and got inspired to redo her brick fireplace. One thing led to another, and soon Kreuscher was redoing her entire house.
I got the bug, she said. The massive makeover project kept her busy, and she started to get excited about the possibilities of a home that reflected her taste and personality. Kreuscher and her late husband had done some piecemeal remodeling over the years, but their homes original 1963 floor plan and facade were largely intact.
It was a typical rambler a lot of separate rooms, she said, including a formal living room that was rarely used. I had people in there probably 10 times during all the years she lived in her home.
