WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif., March 5 (UPI) -- Firefighters in the Los Angeles area were caught on camera rescuing a small yellow dog that became wedged in the gap between a house and a retaining wall.
Los Angeles County Fire Department rescuers from Station 8 said they were called Monday to the West Hollywood home where the dog was trapped between the house and the wall.
"Each time the dog would whimper or cry, he'd fall deeper into the 6-inch gap," Inspector Randall Wright said on the department's Facebook page.
Wright said firefighters used a pike pole, a tool often used to pull down ceilings during a fire, to support the dog's weight and prevent him from falling further into the gap. The firefighters then tied webbing around the canine's paws and lifted him to safety.
Wright said the video of the rescue, posted to the department's Facebook page, could be used to train firefighters faced with similar situations.
The dog, which was not injured, was returned to his owners.

Rick McCutcheon ofThe Wall wants to hear about your steep slope. Your unstable ridge. Your unusable yard space.
He has a solution.
As visitors to the Portland Home and Garden Show's Excellence in Landscaping Competition see when they stop at the Northwest Comfortable outdoor living environment display, retaining walls have come a long way.
McCutcheon has teamed up with Larry Borlin ofBorlin Landscape Services to show what man-made stones, combined with construction and landscape expertise, can create.
They have incorporated a patio, walkway and arbor with beautiful landscaping. Adding to the year-round living space are a fire pit and a water feature.
The display is corralled inside a low wall of stones, set in a clean-lined, mosaic pattern. It is one of 14 elaborate entries in the Excellence in Landscaping competition at the Expo show, which closes at 6 p.m. tonight .
McCutcheon, whose business has been erecting concrete retaining walls since 1982, says his customers want functional, easy-to-maintain outdoor spaces.
But that's not all. Comfort, relaxation and a sense of escape also play a part in this landscape. Is that a wine glass holder in the arm of a chair made of old wine barrels? Come over and see for yourself.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. The West Virginia Supreme Court says a jury should decide whether a man was trespassing when he strayed off the sidewalk and injured himself at a Cross Lanes casino.
It reverses a Kanawha County judges decision to dismiss the lawsuit, ruling that the man was trespassing when he left the sidewalk and fell off a 6-foot retaining wall.
In 2013, David Ragonese filed a lawsuit against the Racing Corporation of West Virginia, which does business as the Mardi Gras Casino.
The Charleston Daily Mail reports that Ragonese alleged the casino was negligent in protecting guests from the retaining wall.
The casinos attorneys argued that Ragonese knew the wall was there and was trespassing when he walked off the sidewalk and down the hill that led to the wall.
