Heritage activist Caroline Adderson recently sent me an alert saying a Dunbar castle was in danger of being demolished at 3815 West 39th.
The term refers charming little houses with turrets that were popular on the west side in the 1930s and 1940s. With their turrets, arched windows and white stucco exterior, they look like miniature versions of the Disneyland castle.
This particular one belonged to Jack Wood, whose company Master Craft Homes built the Dunbar castles. Wood built a sister castle next door, which made them similar to the Two Dorothies Tudor homes in Kerrisdale that were recently rescued from demolition.
When I drove over a couple of hours later, the demolition crew was already at work. A giant claw smashed through the roof, toppled over the brick chimney, then crunched up the turret. Everything that made the home special was gone in 10 minutes.
What was odd was that the exterior of the house seemed pretty much intact until the bulldozer started tearing it apart. The arched windows were still in place, as was the arched front door. The weather vane was still on top of the turret.
The city of Vancouver recently enacted new regulations for demolitions of pre-1940 character homes like this. Ninety per cent of the home is supposed to be reused or recycled.
It was hoped the new regulations would slow the spate of house demolitions while the city worked to update its heritage register, which was compiled in the mid-1980s and missed many significant buildings. Whether its working is a matter for debate.
Since December, 210 demolition permits have been issued in Vancouver, 126 of them in January and February. If this pace keeps up, 750 buildings will be torn down in Vancouver in 2015. But it could be more demolitions often pick up in spring, which some heritage activists call demolition season.
Dunbar-Southlands has been the hardest hit area. For the past four years, over 100 buildings in the neighbourhood have been torn down annually 107 in 2011, 134 in 2012, 113 in 2013, and 103 in 2014. No other neighbourhood has topped the 100 mark.

Demolition is underway this week at the Crowell-Collier Building, after city officials complained the work was moving too slowly.
Work crews were busy Wednesday tearing down a walkway linking some of the buildings. Portions of other buildings are starting to come down as well, said Joe Reidy, an attorney for Columbus law firm Frost, Brown and Todd, which represents the facilitys owner.
Springfield city officials filed a complaint last month arguing Mosier Industrial Services, the facilitys owner, failed to move forward with the demolition in a meaningful manner, said said Jerry Strozdas, city law director for Springfield.
The city had previously filed a separate court order that called for Mosier to demolish three buildings that make up a portion of the complex, located at 200 W. High St. The site was once the home to one of the worlds largest magazine publishing companies, but has since fallen into disrepair, leaving a major eyesore downtown.
Mosier obtained demolition permits in November last year, but little progress had been made since, Strozdas said.
The motion that we filed a week or so ago in court is asserting that they have not proceeded diligently, that in the last 90 days or so theres been precious little activity, Strozdas said.
But several factors have slowed demolition, including below-freezing temperatures and a water line break that flooded parts of the complex, Reidy said. Crews are not required to work on days when the temperature dips below 20 degrees for safety purposes, he said, adding there is no specific timeline to complete the project because it is weather-dependent.
The forecast for next week is for warmer weather, so every day that weve got appropriate temperatures theyll be working on the demolition of that building until its down, Reidy said.
In January, a water line also burst, flooding the basement and elevator pit of one of the buildings and slowing demolition for more than three weeks, Reidy said.
The building is 900,000 square feet, making it one of the largest structures in Springfield. The complex covers an entire city block.

Demolition set to start on Crowell-Collier complex
A demolition drive was carried out by the district administration at Raisina village here on Thursday clearing around 32 acres of land in the Aravalli Range of encroachment.
The drive was undertaken at eight farm houses which included boundary wall demolition of seven farmhouses and pillar fencing of one farmhouse. The demolition was carried out under section 4 of Aravalli Notification which says that these hills cannot be used for any purpose other than plantation.
DTP (Enforcement) Narender Solanki said that the Deputy Commissioner office had been receiving complaints that forest area and plantations were being destroyed in the Aravalli Range to construct farmhouses. He further added that there was a need for a joint effort on the part of all departments concerned to stop this illegal construction. The electricity department had given connection to these farmhouses. It encouraged more and more people to carry out such unauthorised construction. All departments should co-ordinate to stop this, said Mr. Solanki.
