With burglaries on the rise more people are installing home security systems

    - February 23, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Recent FBI statistics reveal that nearly 9 million property crimes take place in the U.S. each year, because of that we are seeing a surge in the installation of home security systems.

Protecting your home from unwanted intruders is serious business.

Typically, a modern alarm system with high-quality wireless equipment can be installed for about $700, but the real key is who is on the other end of the alarm.

"All our employees go through thorough background checks, so if we wouldn't have them in our home and feel comfortable we certainly aren't going to send them to our clients' homes," said Kirk Booher a home security professional.

"When considering a home alarm system the monitoring is the most important part, said Angie Hicks of Angies List. You can install an alarm that is just going to make sound in your house if somebody trips it, but the real value of an alarm system is it being tied to the police, and the fire, in case of an emergency."

When you meet with a home security company find out what company they use for their alarm monitoring.

Make sure it is UL Certified, or has a 5-star diamond rating from the Central Station Alarm Association.

You will pay a separate monthly fee for this, which could range from $15 to $60 depending on how sophisticated your system is.

Once you're satisfied with that it's time to decide on the equipment you need to adequately protect your home.

"We always recommend multiple layers of protection, perhaps perimeter security with cameras, or motion lights, said Booher. Then the next level would be window sensors that detect glass breakage, the window opening; of course, door sensors. Then another layer may be interior motion sensors on interior doors so we have multiple layers of coverage."

Thomas HVAC Now Offering Kohler Home Generators to Customers

    - February 23, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Huntsville, AL (PRWEB) February 23, 2015

Thomas HVAC is now offering Kohler Home Generator installations to its residential customers in an effort to help homeowners prepare for the upcoming tornado season in April.

According to Bo Thomas, Owner, the decision to add the Kohler home generator to Thomas HVAC's product offerings was an obvious one.

"With the April tornadoes coming soon, it became apparent that these are something our customers could really benefit from, with more protection from the storm season," Thomas says. "A generator is an excellent convenience to have if you lose power in your home; the generator automatically turns on if power is lost and will keep everything within the home on and running with no power surges."

All the technicians at Thomas HVAC underwent the certification process for installing and maintaining Kohler generators. While Thomas HVAC specializes in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, Thomas says this knowledge applies surprisingly well to generator maintenance.

"All of the knowledge and experience from HVAC translates pretty well to generators," he says. "All of our technicians are trained to work with gas and do it regularly. Generators are powered by gas lines; we all have mechanical gas licenses for gas systems. Installing a generator is very similar to installing a gas heating and air conditioning system."

There are several reasons why a Kohler generator is a beneficial feature for any homeowner to have in his or her home. In the event of a power outage, having a generator helps prevent spoiled food, frozen and burst pipes, flooding damage, mold growth and much more.

"A Kohler generator can give you that peace of mind even when youre not home," Thomas says.

Thomas encourages anyone interested to call Thomas HVAC for a free consultation and quote for the price of a generator installation in their home. Thomas HVAC also has financing plans available to make the costs of a generator more manageable.

"The Kohler generator is an excellent product, trusted in government and hospital buildings because of their reliability," Thomas explains. "We think these-top-of-the-line generators are very beneficial to our customers, especially since weather-related power outages have doubled since 2003 and the storm season is coming up in the next few months."

Pickles under pressure to curb cuts to Hampshire council

    - February 23, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Rebecca Pearson

COUNTY councillors from all parties have formed a united front to fight for a better deal for Hampshire.

They will send a cross-party letter urging local government secretary Eric Pickles to stop cutting the authoritys funding.

Councillors fear further cuts could damage frontline services, including safeguarding some of the countys most vulnerable children and adults.

The authority has lost 51 per cent of its Government funding in the last six years.

As previously reported, library funding has been slashed, neighbourhood wardens axed, bus subsidies removed and hundreds of council jobs lost.

Funding has also been stopped for gardening and handyman services at sheltered accommodation and frail pensioners' homes.

    Hampshire County Council's Winchester headquarters

Hampshire is bracing itself for a further 100 million in cuts that are likely to come into effect after 2017.

Do companies like Uber, Handy fuel underground economy?

    - February 23, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The sharing economy might be getting lots of buzz, but Kevin Hipkins thinks its just creating a culture of tax cheats.

Hipkins, president of Molly Maid, a Mississauga-based cleaning services company, says these new disruptive tech companies like Handy and Homejoy, funded through the deep pockets of venture capital, are not playing by the rules.

Because these companies consider the cleaner, handyman or furniture assembler to be independent contractors, theyre not employees, and therefore not subject to significant employer contributions for items such as employment insurance or Canada Pension Plan.

If we could wave a magic wand, we could bring down our costs by about 30 per cent, said Hipkins. And avoid all this messy tax stuff.

Molly Maid, with about 1,200 employees, operating in all provinces except Quebec, ends up at a disadvantage when it comes to its profit model, compared to these new companies, he said.

Taxation is a moral responsibility, Hipkins argued. I think we are creating a culture of tax cheats.

He concedes that cleaning services and cleaners have long represented a huge chunk of the underground economy some estimates peg it at more than $3 billion a year in Canada.

However, Hipkins believes theres a difference when its a small under-the-table arrangement between a client and individual cleaner, versus a large U.S. company, with millions in market capitalization.

He argues that the big company should be required to play by the rules.

Handy, which launched in Toronto last April and in Vancouver in June, says it is absolutely not evading taxes.

Lawn Grass Seed – Lawn Grass Seed – Lawn Seed – How to …

    - February 23, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Lawn Grass Seed: Florida The lawn is an integral part of the landscape and provides many important benefits in our increasingly urbanized environment. A lawn not only increases the land's aesthetic and economic value, it also creates a recreational surface, controls erosion, filters pollutants, and supplies oxygen.

Florida grasses vary widely in their adaptive abilities, so choose your turfgrass wisely. Table 1 provides information to assist in your selection. The following questions may serve as guidelines.

    1. What Lawn Do You Want? Lawns require different levels of maintenance. Do you want a lawn that is highly manicured and carefully tended? Or are you looking for an average lawn that will require a moderate work input? Perhaps you're looking for something more naturalized, with less grass and more plantings of other types.

Most turfgrass will respond to a range of maintenance levels, but there is an optimum level for each grass. A zoysiagrass or St. Augustinegrass lawn will not perform well without supplemental irrigation during dry spells. Argentine Bahiagrassis able to survive without supplemental irrigation, and with proper establishment may form a dense, lush, dark green lawn, as some of the other grass species will not. With current Florida water restrictions increasing Argentine Bahiagrass is becoming more popular as a low maintenance, drought resistant easily established replacment for St. Augustine lawns.

Maintenance levels are closely related to cost and time. High-maintenance turf costs the most and takes the most time to maintain. Whether you do the work yourself or pay to have it done, you should realistically assess your ability to maintain your lawn before choosing a grass.

    2. What Are Your Site's Limitations?

Irrigation: Water quantity and quality are a factor. Do you have an irrigation system? Will you rely on a hose and sprinkler? On rainfall? What is the pH of your water? Do you have elevated salt levels? Are you using fresh (potable) water, or reclaimed waste water?

Mowing: Are you prepared to mow? Most Florida lawn grass varieties should be mowed weekly or bi-monthly at 3-4 inches. Some premium varieties may require mowing heights of 2-3 inches.

Soil type, pH, drainage, and other soil characteristics: It is important to soil test before planting a lawn. The information that you need includes soil pH, soil nutrient availability, and amount of compaction, which can affect drainage. It is also important to know your soil type. Sandy soils tend to dry out faster than clay based soils. Argentine Bahiagrass is known to develop soil density and moisture retention with its extensive root structure and strong sod base.

Shade: The amount of shade the turf will receive can limit the selection of suitable grasses. In general, shady areas need to receive at least 6 hours of sunlight per day for any of the warm-season grasses to grow well.

Villagers put end to vice den with blast

    - February 23, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

This created uneasiness and really disturbed the residents of this village, especially the elderly. Later a feng shui solution was able to rid the village of this problem.

As the name "General Obscene Stone" really implies a male chauvinist showing off his private parts, this gigantic rock was later blamed for the vices of this village, one local resident said.

A big part of feng shui is the image that serves as a metaphor for the object that may be in the vicinity.

In the case of the village, it influenced local women to indulge in a vice like prostitution. And guess which places are in close proximity to Lantau? Macau and Zhuhai!

Locals, especially the elderly, were concerned.

They were ashamed of the matter and sought to solve the issue.

What was the remedy? They took the initiative to blast off the male "private part." Believe it or not, this managed to solve the problem gradually over a few years.

This leads me to write about certain feng shui settings, especially those related to mountains that bring along certain kind and unkind energies. Ancient scriptures state that cosmic energy is mirrored down to Earth, and a protruding mountain or peak will carry significant weight in determining the kind or unkind energies they can harness.

The notion of five planets (Venus, Jupiter, Mercur
