It might as well be Springfest

    - February 23, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By KATHY STEVENS

    kstevens@njherald.com

Nineteen years ago, a greenhouse was built at the Sussex County Fairgrounds, which planted the seed of holding a spring flower and garden show.

David Wright, of David Wright Landscape Architect LLC, in Branchville; Brian Hautau, of Hautau Landscaping Inc., also of Branchville; and Tony Cerbo, of Cerbo's Nursery, in Hampton, put together the show that was held in the newly constructed greenhouse building during a snowy March weekend.

The greenhouse still had a dirt floor. We hadn't poured the concrete floor yet. And it snowed quite a bit, Wright said. He recalls the show did draw a few visitors.

Wright, director of the Springfest Garden Show for 19 years, said Springfest has grown from its initial one greenhouse building to include the greenhouse, adjoining Conservatory, Farm Fun Building and several tents. The show now spans four days and is a breath of spring for the winter weary. Over the years, in addition to an increased number of flower and garden exhibits, the show has added educational lectures, a cafe and multiple vendors, and is attended by thousands of people.

The show opens at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 12, and is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through March 15 at the Sussex County Fairgrounds on Plains Road in Augusta. Admission is $12 for adults; $9 for seniors 65 and older and free for children under 12 years old.

On Senior day, March 12, admission for those 65 and older is $8. The show is rain, shine or snow, as it is all under cover and indoors.

The area's landscape companies, including Wright's, have been busy all winter designing their displays for the show, forcing flowers from winter dormancy, and building the gardens that will inspire visitors with the latest outdoor-living trends or perhaps a new planting to enhance curb appeal.

For anyone considering an outdoor project, visiting the garden show is a way to meet with representatives of landscape companies, chat with the owners and peruse their portfolios. Landscape architects, such as Wright, can advise how to draw a plan for your garden.

Turf likely replaced at Carson Park

    - February 23, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Eau Claire (WQOW)- The turf takes a pounding every year, but change is on the horizon for Carson Park's field.

The Eau Claire City Council will vote Tuesday night whether to hire a landscape architect to study replacing the artificial turf at Carson Park. The turf was originally installed in 2004 at a cost of almost $850,000, and it is beginning to show signs of wear and tear.

The city council recognized it needs to be replaced in the future, but it said the investment in Carson Park has paid off and the artificial turf has been a success.

"We've been able to play something like 160 games a year on the turf," Eau Claire Parks and Recreation Director Phil Fieber said. "Where as in the past when Carson Park had the natural turf we could play maybe twenty, so the artificial turf has been a good move for a community that has a shared facility."

The project is estimated to cost anywhere between $400,000 and $500,000. The city is budgeting about $100,000 and Eau Claire School District along with private donations would fund the remaining costs.

    Students join in renovating city

    - February 23, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

WARREN - New York students are back in town, this time joined by Kent State University landscape architect students to work on the Robins Project.

Students sat down with the Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership on Saturday to present ideas to community members about renovating the city, particularly vacant lots in the designated Garden District in downtown Warren.

"Our philosophy is that everything we touch will be resident-driven," Matt Martin, executive director of The Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership, said. "Applications from residents will only be approved and successful if residents keep up with the project."

Kent State University's involvement branched from The Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership visiting the campus and finding that landscape architecture students were interested in urban issues such as foreclosed and vacant spaces, Interim Director of Landscape Architecture Charles Frederick said.

"When they showed us a couple neighborhoods that they wanted to work on, I got really excited to start," Frederick said.

Returning are students from the New School in New York, who first visited the long-closed and vacant Robins Theater in downtown Warren a year ago. The students worked on the building and pitched plans that ranged from renovating the theater into a multipurpose building encasing a restaurant, brewery, recording studios, an event hall, or woodshop, among other ideas.

The thought was to make Warren a "cultural hub."

The New School took an interest in the city as a whole rather than just the renovation of The Robins Theater. They call this project the "Integral City."

"Integral means to make it more complete and that's the heart of your city - to make the center stronger makes the community stronger," the Robins Project organizer Melissa Holmes said. "As soon as the theater (space) opens up, downtown will really benefit from having the large entertainment venue."

Elliot Killen, a landscape architecture graduate student at Kent State and Warren native, also sees the benefits of a revitalized downtown area.

Redevelopment of Alexandria waterfront is slowly moving forward

    - February 23, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

More than three years after a pitched civic battle over the future of the Old Town Alexandria waterfront, the vision of a new front yard for this historic city is beginning to take shape.

The City Council last year adopted a $120million landscape design and project plan created by Olin Studios. But it may be years before residents and tourists see the lush parks and fountains in operation; Alexandrias plan is to focus on infrastructure and development first.

Residents told city officials over the winter that they wanted a solution to the notoriously flood-prone streets adjacent to the Potomac. The council will determine March3 what funding to allocate to flood mitigation. Storm-sewer work is underway, and planning officials are studying how to raise the grade of streets on the southern end of the waterfront area and build the bulkheads necessary for a waterfront walkway.

We have to get funding in place, we have to get the design done and we have permitting processes to complete, all of which could take three years, said Emily Baker, Alexandrias acting deputy city manager.

Meanwhile, the development plans of private parties who own several large pieces of land along the waterfront are working their way through the permitting process.

First to build probably will be the Old Dominion Boat Club, which last year accepted a $5million buyout offer from the city for its clubhouse and parking lot at the foot of King Street.

The boat club will move a few hundred feet south, to the site of the vacant Beachcombers building, which it will raze and rebuild as a three-story, 12,000-square-foot club with a roof deck and boat launch.

The old clubhouse will be demolished and will form part of a city park, dubbed Fitzgerald Square. The boat clubs architect told the citys waterfront commission last week that he hopes the facility will open in 18 months.

Designed to incorporate maritime touches such as outdoor stairways, the clubhouse probably will be built before the city creates the waterfront promenade, a walkway intended to connect the entire area. A fenced parking lot will be directly south of the clubhouse, and a temporary boat ramp will be used until the promenade is built and a permanent ramp is installed.

Five blocks north, the retail-residential-hotel project at 500 N. Union St. could be under construction by late 2016. It is on the site of the old Robinson Terminal North. City Interests LLC bought the property from The Washington Post Co. in late 2013.

Ku Li: Land clearing could have caused floods

Gua Musang MP urges govt to monitor logging activities to protect environment

GUA MUSANG: Gua Musang Member of Parliament, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, does not exclude the possibility that uncontrolled land clearing for agricultural purposes and logging activities are the main causes of the massive floods which hit Kelantan last December.

He said these activities had resulted in the riverbeds of several main rivers, especially Sungai Belatop in Lojing, to rise and the rivers to overflow during heavy rain in the monsoon season.

I dont dismiss the possibility that these activities had caused the recent major floods, and residents in low-lying, food-prone areas in Hulu Kelantan must be prepared in facing the monsoon in future.

He said this in his speech at the Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sri Wangi 2, Parent-Teacher Association annual general meeting, here, today.

Tengku Razaleigh, who is also Gua Musang Umno division chief, said the Orang Asli in several villages in Pos Brooke and Lojing had previously voiced their concerns over the uncontrolled land clearing.

Their worries turned to reality when the massive flooding occurred and we did not expect the flood waters to rise so fast, he said.

Tengku Razaleigh said the authorities should monitor closely the land clearing and logging activities to protect the environment.

Home inspector: Gas line tubing in homes a cause for concern

    NEWS

    Posted February 20, 2015, 10:22 PM Updated February 20, 2015, 10:22 PM

SAN ANTONIO - Jeff Adams, president of the San Antonio Association of Real Estate Inspectors, said it's time for residents to become more aware of a safety issue that literally surrounds their home.

Corrugated stainless steel tubing gained popularity in the 1990s, as a cheaper and more versatile option for carrying natural gas into homes.

"This product is cheap and easy to run," said Adams. "It's flexible. Just roll it out, run it off and cut it."

CSST was originally created for areas prone to earthquakes because of its flexibility.

But Adams said its cost made its popularity grow across the country, including Texas.

But he warned that if not installed correctly, the line can be rupture due to electrical arcing from lightning strikes or other electrical problems in the home.

"There's a lot of issues with this product being energized period," he said. "Do a complete inspection of everything. This product can't be in contact with any type of wiring, it cannot be in contact with anything that can be energized."

Rod Sanchez, director of the city of San Antonio's development services, said most homeowners should not face serious issues as long as the tubing was installed correctly.
