This winter, the GTA has seen some harsh weather, and it seems to only be getting worse, says Tony Defeo, owner of Total Fence Inc. With multiple extreme weather warnings and days of heavy snowfall, wooden fences could be at risk if they arent properly protected.

Defeo explains that a lot can go wrong with wooden fences, especially during a cold, snowy winter. For instance, moisture can build and posts can become brittle, so knowing ways to protect your wooden fence is important.

Too much moisture building up on wooden fences will cause mould and mildew, and can even cause the fence to break down, he adds. Property owners need to check posts regularly, particularly after heavy snowfalls. Also, they need to drain access water around the posts and remove any debris that may attract moisture.

Defeo notes that warping is another problem that wooden fences face in the winter. The distinct shift in seasonal weather is one of the triggers of warping, but combating that starts with how the fence is initially installed.

The best way to prevent warping is having professionals install the fence in the first place, Defeo concludes. A solid fence installation will ensure that posts stay straight and stable, even as the weather goes through sharp turns. Its the same for shifting fences; if the posts arent installed deep enough, then its possible for them to shift with the change of weather.

A dual-winner as a juvenile hurdler, in addition to finishing third in Grade 1 event at the Punchestown Festival, this Willie Mullins-trained grey produced his best effort over the bigger obstacles when beaten a half-length by Bright New Dawn at Punchestown fourteen months ago.

This season, he has gained valuable experience in three of Irelands most competitive handicap chases, fading late to finish twelfth behind the ill-fated Balbriggan in the Troytown at Navan back in November on his seasonal bow.

He then fell at the sixth in the Paddy Power, won by Living Next Door, but produced a solid effort last time, when finishing fifth (beaten sixteen lengths) to Foxrock in the Boylesports Leopardstown Handicap Chase, when he made a costly mistake at the second last.

Dogora has fallen in two of his seven starts. But, with a rating of 138, hes a classy handicapper competing in beginners company today and hes difficult to oppose.

The featured At The Races Bobbyjo Chase sees Jim Cullotys Aintree Grand National hope Spring Heeled return to action. Last seen when fourth to Road To Riches in the Galway Plate, last years Kim Muir winner is favoured by the race conditions but, without a recent run, might struggle against the Gordon Elliott-trained Roi Du Mee.

A tough and consistent performer at this level, Roi Du Mee registered his biggest win when landing the JNwine.com Champion Chase in Down Royal in 2013 and, must concede weight to his four rivals today.

Winner of a listed event at Tramore on New Years Day and likely to dictate the pace, Roi Du Mee should prove tough to beat.

Tomorrow, in Naas, the Willie Mullins-trained Max Dynamite might be good enough to land the Grade 2 Paddy Power Shops Better Value Novice Hurdle.

Dogora can make his class tell in beginners company

On Saturday, Feb. 14, WILDCOAST, the City of Imperial Beach, US Fish and Wildlife Service and YMCA Armed Services volunteers joined together to remove blighted chain link fences from wetland habitat in the South Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Imperial Beach. This important initiative is part a larger effort by WILDCOAST to restore habitat and increase access to the bayfront.

During the event, 17 volunteers from YMCA Armed Services worked with WILDCOAST and US Fish and Wildlife staff to remove 100 feet of unused chain link fences from sensitive wetland habitat. The fence removal, part of WILDCOASTs Scenic South Bay Vision Project, is a collaborative effort to beautify wetland and coastal shoreline in Imperial Beach and South San Diego Bay, and restore habitat in the San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The Vision project is engaging volunteers in cleanups, fence removal, restoration activities and community beautification projects this year. ,

Removal of blighted fences is crucial to restoring and improving public access in the South Bay and WILDCOAST will be planning future events to engage the community these efforts, said John Holder, Border Coordinator at WILDCOAST.
