Lagos demolishes Balogun market razed buildings

    - February 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Lagos State Government on Friday began the demolition of the three buildings gutted by fire on January 12 at the popular Balogun Market in Central Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the demolition was being carried out by a firm, Blackrock Construction Company.

Fire gutted the buildings housing about 100 shops and destroyed goods worth millions of naira.

Officials of the company who spoke to NAN on condition of anonymity said it was the government that gave directive for the buildings to be demolished.

The head of the demolition team who did not state how many days the demolition would take, said the work would take some time to finish.

Mrs. Uju Agunna, a trader who sold clothes in one of the gutted shops, told NAN that she would rent the same place anytime the shops were rebuilt.

I will like to go back to my shop. I have been in this Balogun for over 15 years so it is difficult for me to go and rent somewhere else.

We hope that when the demolition exercise is completed the owners can start building. But now I am sharing a shop with my friend as you can see, Agunna said.

She, however, said she had to begin retail trading to find her feet again because she lost up to five million Naira worth of goods to the fire.

Another victim, Mr. Aliu Gbadamosi, said since his two shops got burnt, he was yet to rent a place to display his wares.

Home Show set for Saturday, Sunday at UM's Adams Center

    - February 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Be sure to head down to the Adams Center this weekend for the 11th annual Missoula Building Industry Associations Home Show for Homeowners. Vendors will be showcasing products and services in advance of springs anticipated building season, giving homeowners an opportunity to see what is available before their yards begin to green up.

The Home Show offers a great opportunity to see hundreds of home products, building experts and professional services all under one roof. The show brings together customers and members of the building industry.

While the weather in Missoula this time of year is not always conducive to home improvement projects, this is the perfect time to begin thinking about what you want to accomplish in the weeks and months ahead. Whether youre building a home, planning a remodel or simply looking to retrofit new solutions into your current home, the Home Show has a vendor for any project.

Looking to sell? The show features real estate and property management firms, and appraisal specialists that can help identify solutions to maximizing sales.

DIY or fixer-upper project? Painting, roofing, gutters, siding, lighting, windows, and efficient heating and cooling systems are all examples of projects homeowners take on to increase their homes value. Vendors who rent the equipment you need to complete your project will also be on hand to answer questions and present their products.

Continuing Sunday, check out the Style Your Space booth presented by the Living Room for ideas on how you can re-imagine your favorite room. Or Ask-A-Pro two booths dedicated for you to ask an industry expert how best to accomplish that plan, retool a workspace or repair a family heirloom that has been collecting dust in the attic for the past five years. Removing the sales aspect allows people to have straightforward conversations about common problems homeowners encounter.

According to the National Association of Home Builders, 15 percent of the economy is in the homebuilding industry. Last year, more than 1,400 building permits were issued by the city of Missoulas Development Services for a total construction value exceeding $82 million. The Home Show features a number of builders who specialize in custom homebuilding. Banks and other professional services also participate. A number of retail stores will be featured, including Boyce Lumber, Freds Appliance and Murdochs. Nonprofits as well as government entities like the Montana Board of Housing and Department of Labor also have a presence.

Bring your plans, ideas or just start dreaming about how you can make your home yours. The two-day event is brought to you by MBIAs gold key sponsors, First Security Bank and BMC West. The show started Saturday and continues Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Adams Center on the University of Montana campus. Tickets are $5 at the door and children younger than 12 get in for free. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

PennDOT will go ahead with this weekend's planned closure of the inbound Fort Pitt Tunnel despite a forecast of snow on Saturday.

The tunnel will close at 10 tonight and is not scheduled to reopen until 6 a.m. Monday as crews continue removing the tunnel ceiling. Traffic will detour through the West End.

Port Authority will open the Wabash Tunnel to inbound traffic as an alternate route from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The tunnel can be reached by exiting the Parkway West to Route 51 south and turning left at Woodruff Street.

PennDOT also plans to close the Parkway West in both directions between Interstate 79 and Green Tree on Monday night for installation of an overhead sign structure, weather permitting. The closure will begin at 10 p.m. and the highway will reopen by 6 a.m. Tuesday.

A full overnight closure also is possible on Tuesday night depending upon how the Monday work proceeds, spokesman Steve Cowan said.

Also planned to begin on Monday are overnight single-lane closures in the inbound Fort Pitt Tunnel, which will occur on weeknight through the end of the year. The restrictions will be in place from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Filthy tenant leaves house crammed with bottles, cigarette ends and food scraps

    - February 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

"It's absolutely disgusting, I've no idea how anybody can live like that.

"It just goes to show how important it is to employ a managing agent and for tenants to regularly inspect their properties."

The landlord - who has asked for the property's full address to be withheld - only suspected there was a problem when the tenant would not let a gas engineer in to check the boiler.

Notice was served, but the tenant fled and left the landlord to face a bill of thousands of pounds to clean the property and return it to its former state.

Although Ms Clarke's firm was not involved with the property while the untidy tenant lived there, they are managing the new tenancy.

    (Caters)

She said: "We do come across situations like this from time to time.

"In this case, the unsuspecting landlord had not expected anything this bad, even though he had not visited his tenant for a number of years."
