SIOUX CITY | The Sioux City police station will get exterior repairs and a new heating and cooling system in the next fiscal year, but a new emergency generator and other fixes will have to wait.

The City Council on Thursday accepted a scaled-back renovation plan from Police Chief Doug Young as part of the fiscal year 2016 budgeting process.

Young's department cut its request for repairs to the nearly 30-year-old building to about $2.4 million. The revised plan drops the generator and renovations to the stations front entry enclosure and grounds.

Last year the department asked the city for about $3.9 million to repair failing infrastructure and a deteriorating parking lot, Young said.

We were tasked with prioritizing what we wanted to get done for the council, and our priorities were the outside of the building and a new (heating and cooling) system, he said.

The building, at 601 Douglas St., has a leaky roof and walls. Young said moisture seeps into the building and creates potential for mold and increased maintenance costs.

The council also approved an additional $100,000 to repair a stretch of sidewalk outside the police station on Douglas Street, between Sixth and Seventh streets.

Also as part of Thursday's operating budget discussion, Jade Dundas, public works director and assistant city manager, said his department will have vacancies when three surveyors retire over the next few months.

With the vacancies, Dundas recommended reorganizing employees who work on the city's geographic information system. That would include eliminating a surveyor position and an underground utilities services coordinator. If the positions were eliminated, the city would save approximately $180,000 per year.

Dundas also recommended the city maintain its current engineering staff. The department is currently interviewing two candidates.

A complete new vintage heating and cooling system was installed with all custom hoses and lines with new dual electric fans to accommodate the radiator and cooling system. The firewall was fitted with custom aluminum plating that was bead rolled in house for a super clean look.

Chrome valve covers were added to the heads to make them stand out and a chrome master cylinder and booster were also installed by the A.S.E. Certified mechanics. The entire engine bay was completely re-wired to make sure the electrical components work perfectly.

A new Holley fuel injection system was added and custom programmed for the injectors and ignition system. With all the performance parts added the 455 cubic inch engine is producing 650 Horsepower. To finish things off in style the body shop techs re-aligned all the body panels, doors, fenders, hood, and deck lid to make sure all gaps were uniform.

As February winds down, the city of Perrysburg winds up for its annual Winterfest, featuring three days of ice carving plus a flurry of family-friendly activities.

Set for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday along Louisiana Avenue in downtown Perrysburg and in The Town Center at Levis Commons, the Perrysburg Winterfest presented by Ed Schmidt Auto Group is hosted by Downtown Perrysburg Inc. and The Town Center at Levis Commons.

This most certainly is not ice carving amateur hour. Rather, this is a National Ice Carving Association-sanctioned, three-day event with the U.S. National Ice Carving Championship as the weekend highlight. Twenty first-class master and professional ice carvers will compete for $15,000 in prize money and the 2015 national title.

Area residents are invited to watch the technical and creative expertise of the professional ice carvers as they carve out their art live on Friday at Levis Commons and Saturday in downtown Perrysburg.

In addition, more than 100 ice carvings, including numerous carvings commissioned by area businesses and organizations, will be on exhibit during the three-day event.

A variety of childrens activities crafts, guest appearances by princesses, story times, and scavenger hunts are planned in downtown Perrysburg and at Levis Commons.

Ortega says that the best way to create more balance and invite more luck in your life is to surround yourself with colors.

The first color that you can use is blue, said Ortega. Anything that is blue or black, or better if its dark blue. The darker it is, the more yen meaning, the more subtle.

She says there will be some economic difficulties this year so we should be careful with our money.

Businesses in banking or anything that deals with money and communication its not going to be good this year, said Ortega.

But it doesnt mean that it will be a bad career year for everyone.
