City to explore retrofitting high-rises with sprinklers

89 high-rises in San Antonio currently without sprinklers

Posted YESTERDAY, 5:59 PM Updated YESTERDAY, 6:33 PM

SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio currently has 89 high-rise buildings that do not have sprinkler systems.

San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said Wednesday that the city will begin a three to six-month process to explore the costs, benefits and challenges of retrofitting the structures with sprinkler systems.

"This is an opportunity (for) management of a tragedy that we have to take advantage of, unfortunately, and make sure we can have that dialogue with the citizens of San Antonio," Hood said.

The city's efforts were sparked by a fire at the Wedgewood Senior Apartments in December in which six people died.

"A sprinkler system would have basically knocked the fire out," Hood told the City Council's Public Safety Committee.

Of the 89 high-rises without sprinklers in San Antonio, 36are residential and five cater specifically to senior citizens.

In 1982 the city changed its fire codes to require sprinklers in any new high-rise, buildings 75 feet and higher, built after 1982. In 1994, the city required all new apartment buildings three or more stories in height to be fitted with sprinklers. In 2004, officials made it a requirement that all new residential occupancies, except single-family homes, be outfitted with sprinklers.

T2 Announce Additions to Coaching, Staff for Inaugural 2015 Season

    - February 19, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

February 18, 2015 - USL (USL) Portland Timbers 2 PORTLAND, Ore. - T2 today announced the addition of two assistant coaches and two additional staff for the 2015 USL season. Joining experienced and accomplished head coach Jay Vidovich on the T2 coaching staff are assistant coach Andrew Gregor and goalkeeper coach Steve Reese. Charles Burdick will serve as the strength and conditioning coach and Taichi Kitagawa as the team's athletic trainer.

The Timbers Academy U-16 head coach, Gregor will also serve as an assistant coach with T2. Under Gregor, the Timbers U-16s are currently second in the Northwest Division with a record of 9-4-4. As part of a 12-year professional playing career that included time in Major League Soccer, Gregor spent part of three seasons with the second-division Timbers (2004, 2007-08). He appeared in 50 league games for the Timbers, registering 10 goals and eight assists and was named one of the USL First Division's top 25 players of the decade for the 2000s, having appeared in more than 200 USL-1 games during this playing career.

Resurgence continues Pirates begin camp searching for final pieces

    Wednesday, February 18, 2015 4:05 AM EST

PITTSBURGH The Pittsburgh Pirates have spent the last two seasons transforming themselves from laughingstock to legitimate contender.

The next step might be the hardest. Yet the Pirates begin spring training this week confident theyve made the necessary moves to produce a third straight playoff appearance one they hope lasts longer than a mere cameo.

We feel good about our additions, general manager Neal Huntington said.

Even if those additions have a largely familiar feel. Pittsburgh re-signed starter Francisco Liriano with the most expensive free agent contract in club history. A.J. Burnett, whose arrival in 2012 augured a significant and vital change in mindset, left millions on the table in Philadelphia to make one last run in a place where he revitalized his once flagging career. Rather than wait for the inevitable, the Pirates traded for catcher Francisco Cervelli before Toronto went deep in the vault to lure All-Star Russell Martin to his native Canada.

The clubs payroll will near a team record $90 million in 2015. While its spending still ranks near the bottom of the National League, payroll has more than doubled in the last five years.

Weve got to be efficient and effective but our margin for error is a little larger, Huntington said. Weve allocated resources to our bench and weve built a deeper club because there is more money available to us.

Huntington simply hopes its money well spent. The Pirates still have several key questions as they look to keep pace with St. Louis and fend off the resurgent Chicago Cubs in perhaps the most competitive division in baseball. Heres what to look for over the next six weeks as Pittsburgh prepares for a season it hopes will carry past early October:

PEDROS PROGRESS: The Pirates hope a change in perspective will change Pedro Alvarezs fortunes. The former first-round pick saw his right arm betray him time and again at third base last year. He had 25 errors in just 99 games and will start camp in the mix at first. Alvarez doesnt need to be dynamic defensively, merely adequate. His strength will always be his bat, which when hot is one of the most dangerous in the NL.

Itll be fireproof, bomb-proof and attack-resistant, a source close to the couple told the magazine.

The addition is just one part of the renovations to the 17th-century manor, where thecoupleoptedto spend their first two weeks as husband and wifeinstead of going ona traditional honeymoon.

And no, its not his rabid fans Clooney is worried about, but rather the people whomight come after his wife, a famed human rights lawyer and activistwho hasrepresented controversial clientsincludingWikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Amal has high-profile clients in controversial cases, the insider explains of the need for Mrs. Clooney, 37, to have protection. She needs to be secure.

Room escape challenge comes to New Haven

    - February 19, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Two board game connoisseurs are offering a new type of entertainment in which participants are locked in a room for an hour, working together to escape.

On Feb. 12, Ethan Rodriguez-Torrent 13 and Max Sutter 11 opened Escape New Haven on 111 Whitney Ave. The room escape challenge has teams of two to nine people who attempt to solve a series of brain teasers in order to break out of the room as Sutter and Rodriguez-Torrent monitor the team and administer clues via a computer from a separate control room. Puzzles and hints can include anything within the room: Furniture, books, coded messages and locks could all be the key to escaping or a red herring.

We take a team of people, we stick them in a scenario, we close the door behind them and say, You have 60 minutes to escape. Go, said Rodriguez-Torrent.

Room escape games have been surfacing in the past year across the country, opening in Washington, D.C., New Jersey and New York City over the past few months. They derive from a sub-genre of video games, exemplified by the online escape game, Crimson Room, in which players find items in a room that provide clues on how to escape.

Non-virtual escape gaming began in Japan in 2007, and the trend began spreading to the east coast of the U.S. in early 2014. Rodriguez-Torrent first had the idea to bring the concept to New Haven after playing at a room escape venue in New York City.

I liked the concept, said Rodriguez-Torrent. I started brainstorming about how to do it better.

Sutter and Rodriguez-Torrent started a prototype of the game last summer and found that their friends enjoyed the challenge. They subsequently decided to expand it into a business. Since opening the escape room, the duo has had to add new weekend time slots to accommodate growing demand. Slots often fill up weeks in advance, said Rodriguez-Torrent.

According to one team of Yale graduates, Escape New Havens scenarios are mental challenges.

It makes you paranoid, said Alexandra Nasser 12 after semi-successfully completing the puzzle with her friends. And you learn to let go of your ideas.

Nasser said her team escaped the room but broke an object in the room in the process.
