Room escape challenge comes to New Haven

    - February 19, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Two board game connoisseurs are offering a new type of entertainment in which participants are locked in a room for an hour, working together to escape.

On Feb. 12, Ethan Rodriguez-Torrent 13 and Max Sutter 11 opened Escape New Haven on 111 Whitney Ave. The room escape challenge has teams of two to nine people who attempt to solve a series of brain teasers in order to break out of the room as Sutter and Rodriguez-Torrent monitor the team and administer clues via a computer from a separate control room. Puzzles and hints can include anything within the room: Furniture, books, coded messages and locks could all be the key to escaping or a red herring.

We take a team of people, we stick them in a scenario, we close the door behind them and say, You have 60 minutes to escape. Go, said Rodriguez-Torrent.

Room escape games have been surfacing in the past year across the country, opening in Washington, D.C., New Jersey and New York City over the past few months. They derive from a sub-genre of video games, exemplified by the online escape game, Crimson Room, in which players find items in a room that provide clues on how to escape.

Non-virtual escape gaming began in Japan in 2007, and the trend began spreading to the east coast of the U.S. in early 2014. Rodriguez-Torrent first had the idea to bring the concept to New Haven after playing at a room escape venue in New York City.

I liked the concept, said Rodriguez-Torrent. I started brainstorming about how to do it better.

Sutter and Rodriguez-Torrent started a prototype of the game last summer and found that their friends enjoyed the challenge. They subsequently decided to expand it into a business. Since opening the escape room, the duo has had to add new weekend time slots to accommodate growing demand. Slots often fill up weeks in advance, said Rodriguez-Torrent.

According to one team of Yale graduates, Escape New Havens scenarios are mental challenges.

It makes you paranoid, said Alexandra Nasser 12 after semi-successfully completing the puzzle with her friends. And you learn to let go of your ideas.

Nasser said her team escaped the room but broke an object in the room in the process.

    Largo considering ban on e-cigarettes

Commissioners on Tuesday tentatively approved a ban on the smoking of e-cigarettes in city-owned buildings. The ban will not become effective until after final approval, which is scheduled for the Largo commission's March 3 meeting.

Police to add new dog to canine unit

Commissioners here agreed to spend up to $10,000 to buy a dog for Largo's canine police unit. The dog will replace Jet, who is retiring after eight years on the force. Largo's canine unit has four dogs, allowing the Police Department to have at least one dog on duty during peak hours of the day. That staffing level also allows one dog to be on its normal patrol duties while another is used for special events and emergencies. The money will come from the department's confiscated property funds.

Culver's restaurant plans second Pasco County location

    - February 19, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

WESLEY CHAPEL Culver's, the popular restaurant best known in the Midwest for its ButterBurgers, plans to open a second location in Pasco County, and its target audience now will be the shoppers at the Tampa Premium Outlets mall.

Engineers have submitted preliminary plans with the Pasco County government to build a 4,235-square-foot restaurant at the Cypress Creek Town Center property owned by the Richard E. Jacobs Group. The lot fronts the south side of State Road 56, just east of the intersection with Wesley Chapel Boulevard.

The Cleveland-based Jacobs Group is one of three entities developing the town center project, which calls for 2 million square feet of retail space, restaurants, offices, hotels and a residential community. Simon Property Group is building the 1.1 million-square-foot outlet mall scheduled to open in October, and Sierra Properties of Tampa, the original developer, owns the remaining 240 acres traversed by SR 56.

Culver's also is building a restaurant at U.S. 19 and Ridge Road in Port Richey, on the site of a former used car lot. It has a targeted opening date in April.

Wisconsin-based Culver's debuted in Florida in 2013 and has two restaurants in Tampa and one in Largo. Culver's opened its first restaurant in Sauk City, Wis., in 1984 and now has more than 500 restaurants across 22 states. Besides the burgers, the menu includes frozen custard, fried cheese curds and soups, salads, sandwiches and dinners including fried chicken and pot roast.

The Cypress Creek location is proposed to include 110 seats, a drive-through and covered outdoor seating. An engineer, construction company executive and a representative of the Jacobs Group are scheduled to meet with county staffers next week to discuss the plans.

Shameless star Elliott Tittensor sued for 300K accused of leaving man brain damaged

    - February 19, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A man who says he was left brain-damaged and blind in one eye after a phone rage row with a star of TV comedy, Shameless, is suing him for more than 300,000 in compensation.

Trainee plumber, Oliver Flint, suffered grave injuries after being thrown from the bonnet of a BMW driven by actor, Elliott Tittensor - who plays Carl Gallagher in the hit Channel 4 series - in the early hours of August 15 2010, the High Court heard.

The pair had clashed outside a McDonalds restaurant in Kentish Town, North London, after the 18-year-olds mobile phone battery ran out and he approached Mr Tittensor, who refused to let him borrow his own handset, said Mr Flints barrister, Andrew Roy.

Following the incident, Mr Tittensor, 25, of Heywood, Lancashire, who was out with his then girlfriend - Skins star, Kaya Scodelario, 22 - was fined 750 and given six penalty points by Highbury Magistrates.

He admitted driving without insurance, his policy having expired the previous month.

But Mr Flint, now 22, of Balmore Street, Archway, north London, now wants the actor to pay him six-figure damages for unlawful battery, claiming he attacked him with his car before fleeing the scene, leaving him badly injured.

Mr Tittensor denies any wrongdoing and says he was acting in lawful self-defence in order to evade the drunk and aggressive plumber who had mounted the bonnet of his car.

Mr Roy told Mr Justice Edis that the actor swore at Mr Flint after being asked to lend his phone for the second time.

When the plumber responded by swearing back and slamming his hand on the car bonnet, Mr Tittensor drove forward and hit Mr Flint with the front of his car, the barrister said.

That forced Mr Flint onto the bonnet, whereupon Mr Tittensor continued to drive forward whilst shaking the wheel to throw Mr Flint off the bonnet, and succeeding in throwing him violently and heavily to the ground, claimed Mr Roy.

Local plumber offers four simple tips to keep pipes from freezing

    - February 19, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Frozen, busted pipes might seem inevitable in this deep freeze, but a few simple steps could save you thousands in repairs.

David Champion was on his third call of the day Wednesday -- and it wasn't even lunchtime yet.

    The problem?

"It's the only pipe up there that is exposed, and it's got a little crack in it -- just a little crack," described Champion.

It's a familiar tale for the staff at Tom Drexler Plumbing Air and Electric. Owner Tom Drexler says his company is averaging 300 calls a day during this deep chill.

"We have way more business than we could ever handle for probably a week," he said. "When the pipes freeze, it just freezes solid like an ice cube. Then the water expands, splitting the pipe."

He's offering four simple tips that homeowners can use right now to try and keep repair professionals away from their homes.First, seal off the vents for the crawlspaces at your house. You can use cardboard, insulation -- anything to keep the wind from whipping through.

Second, open you cabinets, especially if they're near outside walls.

"Allow heat from the house to get in underneath the cabinet and that in and of itself can prevent problems," Drexler said.

Next, leave a small drip running from the faucet.
