READY TO BUILD: The prefabricated floating home comes in a series of components.
A new design promising homes that can be built on water is likelyto shake up the housing market.
By creating a home that floats, Britain-based Carl Turner Architects are promotinga new wave of properties on to the market that can be situated on flood plains and waterways.
The plans willbe freely available on the open sources architecture project Paperhouses.
Jennifer Duke
DESIGN FREELY AVAILABLE: The design also includes a crow's nest with an observation room at the top, and garden on the roof.
Described on Paperhouses as "part house and part boat", the design responds to the increasing challenges of flooding globally and to the underuse of urban waterways.
The floating house hasa floating tray as itsbase, with a rubber-coasted insulated timber box as the house, and side panels as an outer skin.
The design also includes a crow's nest with an observation room at the top, and a garden on the roof witha rainwater harvesting tank.

The Corners, a large retail development planned for the Town of Brookfield that ran into delays, is now proceeding toward a spring construction start, the developers announced late Wednesday night.
The Corners, which will be anchored by a 140,000-square-foot Von Maur department store, is expected to open in fall 2016, acccording to Milwaukee-based Marcus Corp., Chicago-based Bradford Real Estate and IM Properties Plc, based in the United Kingdom.
IM Properties and Bradford are part of a newly announced joint venture with Marcus on The Corners. Marcus started the project, and will retain a minority interest in Brookfield Corners LLC, the group that will own and operate the development.
The next step will be to begin demolition of a former Menards store at the project site. That work is expected to begin next week, said Megan Hakes, a spokeswoman for the developers.
The announcement came after the Brookfield Town Board voted 4-1 to approve a development agreement with Brookfield Corners LLC. That comes one year after the board approved a plan to help finance the project.

TAMPA Mark Mathiason will live in his newly finished home only a few weeks before having about 1,000 visitors. Thats because he volunteered his Craftsman-style home to be among the eight Hyde Park residences open Feb. 28 for the annual Historic Hyde Park Home Tour.
Brave is one word, stupid is another, he quips about if the craftsmen will complete their sawing and drilling in time. He bought the place last year but wasnt able to get cranking until September.
Sponsored by the Historic Hyde Park Neighborhood Association, a nonprofit neighborhood association since 1996, the tour features various private homes in the neighborhood. Proceeds for the tour are used to fund the HHPNAs operations and projects, including area restoration and historic signage.
Projects like those, however, arent what drew the Mathiasons to the neighborhood.
We just love Hyde Park. We can walk to the village and eat at all the different places, he said about his familys choice to move to the area.
That family includes daughter, Kendall, 16, 17-year-old Florida State University student son Braden and furry family member Scout. Visitors, no doubt, will be in awe and take home plenty of DIY ideas.
He likes discussing his architecturally sensitive renovations. For instance, he removed a closet in a guest room, replaced it under nearby stairs and transformed the new space into a spacious, upscale kitchen.
Mathiason, who owns Mortgage Corporation of America, is the third owner of the home.
The Maynard-Hirsch family, instrumental in early Tampa history, lived there from the 1920s.
Bill Hirsch, a Tampa CPA, is sorry many neighboring homes didnt survive the wrecking ball.

A unique project in West Wales which is transforming a 19th century school house into a showcase for 21st century green technologies with support from Welsh Government will be in the spotlight when it features on Channel 4s popular Restoration Man programme tonight.
The programme provides an update on the progress Jayne and Ian Hall-Edwards, directors of Plumbers, Electricians, Carpenters Ltd (PECs), have made on Hen Ysgol in Pencader, since it was first featured on Restoration Man.The couple are converting and renovating the historic building to create a sustainable green technology eco centre with two elements a showcase and sales centre for green technologies and a new training centre to equip companies and individuals with the skills and knowledge to install the various technologies.
Hen Ysgol is now the base for their business that now has a firm focus on eco friendly systems as well as their home. The commercial side of the project, which will deliver community, educational and wider economic benefits for the region, is being supported by the Welsh Government.
Economy Minister Edwina Hart visited the project last year to see how it was benefiting from 67,500 support from the Wales Economic Growth Fund. In fact the first airing on Restoration Man showed the couple celebrating the grant offer which was a vital piece of the jigsaw to take the project forward.
The Minister said:A tremendous amount of work has gone into this highly innovative project that aims to create long term sustainable benefits for the community as well as economic benefits for the wider region.
It has been a labour of love for Jayne and Ian who are working to create a unique centre in the heart of rural Wales and bring new opportunities to the area. I am pleased the Welsh Government is supporting the business and wish them every success in the future.
The extensive variety of technologies on show at the centre will include underfloor heating, rain water harvesting, PV roof panels, solar thermal panels, air to air pumps, air to water pumps, low energy lighting, low energy pumps, permeable paving, a green roof, a Bio-digestive tank, multi-fuel wood burning fires and stoves, biomass, to include pellet and log gasification units.
All these technologies are linked together with the intelligent buffer tank to provide hot water and central heating on demand at a fraction of the cost of the mainstream fuels.
The large showroom and salesroom will enable home owners and businesses to see the technologies in action before buying, while working child friendly models will be displayed throughout to help school children understand and learn in a safe environment.

NEWCASTLE: Cabinet document shows government rejected advice about Newcastle light rail.
ROLES: Tim Crakanthorp, left, found the document, and Jeff McCloy, right, says he did not have much influence.
Read the cabinet papers here
A CABINET document that shows the government rejected advice from Transport for NSW about the best light rail route in Newcastle was found in former Liberal MP Tim Owens office, it has been revealed.
It raises questions about how the citys former backbencher came into possession of the confidential information and why Labor did not tell the public sooner of the discovery made after it won the citys byelection.
Labor MP Tim Crakanthorp, who inherited Mr Owens Hunter Street office, said on Tuesday that he had found the copy of the cabinet minute late last year in the back of a filing cabinet after he had given evidence to a November hearing for a parliamentary inquiry into the governments planning decisions.
He referred it to the office of the opposition leader.
During a visit to the region on Tuesday, Premier Mike Baird was forced to defend the selected light rail route as one chosen with the citys revitalisation needs in mind, and labelled as conspiracies claims the route was selected to favour the interests of developers.
Fairfax Media reported on Tuesday that Transport for NSW advised the cabinet infrastructure committee in December 2013 that its preferred light rail route was along the corridor for the heavy rail line that was to be ripped up as part of a Newcastle revitalisation plan.
