Who wouldnt cringe at the sight of dozens of roaches quickly scurrying away when a light is turned on in the kitchen? And our distaste is well-founded. Cockroaches carry and spread a number of health problems. Find out more, including effective roach pest control measures.
About Roaches
What we think of as the common cockroach actually comprises a number of different insect species. There is even a kind called periplaneta Americana, or the American cockroach -- a misnomer, since this kind of roach is to be found worldwide. Depending on their type, adult roaches may range in size from 10-40 mm, or approximately 1/3 to 1 1/2inch.
Roaches are active mainly at night, when they tend to have free run of your kitchen. During the day, they prefer to hide, preferably in warm moist spaces, but they will take up residence in cracks in your bathroom wall, your home heating system, electrical appliances, and more. If you live in an apartment, they will move freely among the neighbors in your building.
Cockroaches arent overly picky eaters. Though their favorite foods are full of starch and sugar (think pastries and candy), they also enjoy such delicacies as cardboard, shoe soles, blood and sputum, and the dead or weak from among their own kind.
Why Roaches Are Dangerous
Roaches arent considered pests just because of their yuck factor. Via their gland secretions and their vomit (eeww!!) they give off an unpleasant odor that is extremely hard to get out of your home. They can also damage household possessions ranging from upholstered furniture to hardbound books.
Worse than those unpleasant habits, though, is their infamous calling card. In their wake, roaches leave feces and partially digested food. Because they eat garbage and human waste, they pick up disease organisms and parasitic worms. They then spread these by means of the digestive fluids which they leave behind on foods they have nibbled. Whats more, they transfer additional microbes via the numerous hairs on their bodies.
As well as causing allergic reactions including skin conditions and respiratory problems, roaches are known to carry dangerous diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, leprosy, plague, polio, and typhoid fever.

Gang members masqueraded as Health Department and pest control company staff.
NIBONG TEBAL: The police have crippled a robbery gang masquerading as Health Department staff carrying out fogging activities at foreign workers quarters in the state after arresting five men in Kamunting, Perak on February 8.
Penang CID chief Mazlan Kesah said one of the men was arrested at a house in Kamunting, after which four of his friends were also caught in the same area.
They masqueraded as Health Department and pest control company staff, requesting victims to evacuate their premises for spraying purposes, but at the same time took the opportunity to steal valuable items such as electronic equipment and cash, he told a press conference here yesterday.
He said three of the five men aged between 19 and 27 tested positive for drugs while two others had past criminal records.
Based on investigations, the group was believed to be involved in 51 cases, 19 in Penang involving losses of more than RM100,000, and the rest in Kedah, Perak and Negeri Sembilan.
He said the police also seized one mosquito repellant spray pump, chemicals, a mobile phone and a four-wheel-drive vehicle which was used by the gang to carry out the robberies.
Mazlan said the police were looking for a man named Mohd Nuzul Che Man, 27, from Kamunting, Perak, to assist investigations and those with any information regarding the man were urged to contact the nearest police station.
Meanwhile in another development, Mazlan said the body found floating in Sungai Udang here last Saturday was that of a Sikh woman who was reportedly kidnapped in Subang Jaya, Selangor a day earlier.
The case is being investigated by the Selangor police contingent and Penang police will assist with the investigations as the body was found in this state, he said.

PROLIFIC burglar Lloyd Matthews was confronted by homeowners after he entered their house and stole a tablet computer.
The 41-year-old walked into the Fenton address while the couple were watching television in their lounge.
But their dog started barking which led to them going into the kitchen where they saw the defendant standing by the patio doors holding their tablet computer.
Matthews threw the tablet at the man before he apologised and begged the couple not to call the police.
He even told them where he lived.
He ran off and escaped but was later picked out in an identity parade.
Now Matthews, who has a lengthy criminal record including many house burglaries, has been jailed for four-and-a-half years at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.
Prosecutor Nick Tatlow said the defendant entered the address in Beech Grove, Fenton, at 8pm on December 3 as the couple watched television in their sitting room.
Mr Tatlow said: They heard the dog barking in the kitchen and went to investigate. They saw a man standing at the open patio doors holding their tablet computer.

People in Bowthorpe have been warned to keep their windows and doors secured after two burglaries over the weekend.

The first took place in Skoner Road between 9.30pm on Saturday and 5am on Sunday, when a silver Samsung laptop and power lead was stolen after burglars got in through an unsecured door.
The second happened at a property in Holworthy Road, between 10.30pm on Sundayand 5.15am the following day.
The offenders got in through an unsecured front door and stole a black Dell laptop, a black Nintendo DS with games and a Blackberry mobile phone.
A brown wallet and purse, a brown bag and around 230 in cash was also taken.
Police have issued advice on improving home security, which includes: keeping windows and doors locked; removing keys and keeping them in a safe place; fitting a door-chain and spy hole; and upgrading external door locks to BS3621 standard.
Other tips include fitting multi-locking systems on patio doors and installing letterbox cages to stop burglars reaching through the door.
Officers also advise never leaving keys in obvious hiding places, or near doors or windows.

Botanas' second location at 1421 E. Howard Ave. will open its doors on March 2. Published Feb. 16, 2015 at 9:06 p.m.
Last September, it was reported that Botanas would open a second location at the former Patio Banquet Hall at 1421 E. Howard Ave. Now, the Mexican restaurant has an official grand opening date.
Botanas II will officially open its doors beginning at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 2.
The second Botanas will serve up an almost identical menu featuring tacos, enchiladas and other authentic Mexican specialties to the original restaurant, located at 816 S. 5th St. Last year, that menu landed Botanas in the fifth runner-up spot for best Mexican restaurant in OnMilwaukee.com's best of dining poll, finishing behind Bel Air Cantina by less than 50 votes.
