    Penn, Temple growth plans

    - February 17, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

At its Feb. 17 monthly meeting (typically 1 pm, upstairs at 1515 Arch St.) the Philadelphia City Planning Commission expects to review these 12 scheduled items. Highlights:

    - The University of Pennsylvania: 1) plans to demolish the former Penn Tower hotel building between its museum, med school and parking garage, with a complex to be designed by British architect Norman Foster (who's also planned the second Comcast tower); as an early step, Penn wants to replace the current enclosed second-story footbridge linking the Tower to the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine, with a "temporary" five-year span. 2) In other Perelman upgrades, Penn plansto add two 7-story, 52,000 square foot expansions to what's now the "Ronald O. Perelman Center for Political Science and Economics" (the former Mellon Bank building) at 133 S. 36th St.

    - Temple spreads: The university plans to add the former William Penn High School property to its master plan for the neighborhood. Current plans call for athletic facilities on the school site as Temple continues to grow south along Broad St. toward Center City. Temple also seeks planners' blessing on its new library at the college center (instead of an earlier Broad St. plan), and additions to the Engineering school and Weiss Hall.

    - South Philly: Developer Phat Mot plans 113 housing units plus stores at 2401 Washington St., as the old industrial and construction-services neighborhood makes way for residential expansion from Center City. The Civic Design Review board has given a favorable review but it still needs rezoning, industrial to residential.

    - A proposal by Councilman Squilla would exempt foot carts from zoning permit requirements "when operating on private property."

Plus neighborhood plans and rights-of-way rulings; see the agenda linked above.

Sense of familiarity marks McClendon's second year

    - February 17, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Seattle made some significant additions over the winter -- headlined by 2014 Major League home run leader Nelson Cruz -- but the bulk of the squad consists of returning players from a team that went 87-75 last year and missed an American League Wild Card spot by one game.

    Spring Training: Tickets | Ballpark | 40-man roster | Non-roster invitees

McClendon will greet 27 pitchers and seven catchers Friday, with the rest of the position players due by next Tuesday. The first day will consist of players taking physical exams before on-field activity begins Saturday.

"I'm very excited," McClendon said. "Going into Spring Training last year, I didn't know my personnel. I didn't even know faces. There were a lot of things we couldn't accomplish last spring that we'll be ahead of the game on this year, as far as putting in some things we'd like to from an offensive and defensive standpoint.

"I certainly think we're well adapted to do those things. We know the club, we know the talent that we have and we know their capabilities. So it should be a fun spring for us."

Outlook: Slugger Cruz moves to spacious Safeco Field

The defending home run champion Nelson Cruz could see his home run total decrease with the Mariners, but is still expected to hit 30 dingers

There's a different buzz going into this year's camp, with Seattle regarded as a prime contender in the AL West after improving by 16 wins in 2014, then adding some intriguing veterans in Cruz, left-hander J.A. Happ, outfielders Seth Smith and Justin Ruggiano and newly defined utility man Rickie Weeks.

"All in all, it was a very good winter," said general manager Jack Zduriencik. "We're excited to get into Spring Training."

February 17, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods) Battle Creek Bombers Battle Creek, Mich. - The Battle Creek Bombers are gearing up for their 2015 season, and recently announced multiple new additions to their front office. Luke Tanaka, Max Gun, Kaitie Bush, and Zander Atwood have all been hired on by the franchise for the 2015 campaign.

He is currently majoring in Broadcast Journalism at Michigan State University, where he will graduate in December 2015. Gun also works for the Big Ten Network Student U, where he announces play-by-play for various MSU Men's Basketball, Soccer, and Baseball games. He has served as an anchor/reporter for MSU's award-winning student TV newscast, "Focal Point." With Focal Point, Gun who won two first place awards through the Michigan Association of Broadcasters contest, for Best-Anchored Newscast and Best Hard News Story. He has also interned for the NBC-TV affiliate in Detroit, (Channel 4, WDIV), where he helped conduct player and coach interviews, as well as assist in producing the 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 11 p.m. sportscast. Tanaka and Gun will be teaming up to broadcast all Bombers games this season.

Kaitie Bush begins her second season with the Bombers, and first as the Marketing and Partnership Activation Manager. She previously served as an intern throughout the 2014 season. Prior to the Northwoods League, Bush gained experience in Minor League Baseball serving as an intern for the Lansing Lugnuts. She is currently finishing her degree in Sport Management with a minor in General Business from Grand Valley State University. In her new position, Bush will provide support in the creation, development, and execution of the sponsorship objectives, marketing events, and community relations programs.

Zander Atwood will also be beginning his career in sports with the Battle Creek Bombers during the 2015 season. Although he hasn't played baseball since high school, Atwood has dreamed of working in professional sports, especially baseball, since that time. Born and raised in Valparaiso, IN, he went to college at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI, where he graduated with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Business Administration/Sport Management. As part of his college education, he interned with the Disney College Program, working in Parade Audience Control at the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL. Atwood is excited to begin his role as the Account Executive for the Bombers.

Bombers General Manager Tony Iovieno announced the additions to the front office today, and added "I believe these new front office staff members bring a wealth of experience to the table, and will allow us to provide an even better experience for our fans in 2015. Kaitie already has experience in both the Northwoods League and in Minor League Baseball; Zander joins us after a very prestigious internship at Walt Disney World, and Luke and Max are going to provide us with one of the best broadcast teams in the Northwoods League. These are all highly talented individuals, and I couldn't be more excited to have them here in Battle Creek".

The Bombers open up play on May 26th, opening day of the Northwoods League season, when they host the defending NWL champion Lakeshore Chinooks. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tickets, Mini-Plan information, and Group Outings are now available by calling the front office at (269)-962-0735 or by emailing info@battlecreekbombers.com.
