The kitchen is one of the most essential activity areas in the home. The type of cabinets used in the kitchen, as well as its design, reflects on the style of the user of the space. The design of the kitchen should not only look fabulous but at the same time serve as a room with great functionality for the family who will be using it.
Before starting a kitchen design project for a household, it is important to think about the family's living habits. One might think that the kitchen is only designed for those who have a passion for cooking. However, this usually does not apply to all households. For example, a working household hardly has the time to prepare home cooked meals. They either order take out or warm up pre-packaged meals. What type of expectations could this family have for their kitchen? An extra-large pantry space for dry food and snack storage may be useful to them. They may also like an individual full-sized freezer to store some extra frozen entrees. Although this household might hardly ever cook, it doesn't necessarily mean they prefer to eat their food from take-out containers. Therefore, having a double dishwasher is another kitchen essential to keep in mind. It has recently become an increasingly popular kitchen design trend and serves the needs of a busy household who do not have time to clean plenty of dishes every day. The dishwasher can also cater to those who love to host large parties. A multi-functional island that serves as a casual breakfast and a homework station for the kids is a viable option for a busy household. Large islands can be used for multiple purposes and should always include an electric outlet that supports any media plugin as well as plumbing for an additional hand sink or beverage sink. Make sure to have these options in mind during the planning stage of a kitchen.
What about the dad or mom who loves to cook meals for their family and friends? What can a designer do to make the kitchen space more gourmet friendly to the family chef? A double spice rack on each side of the stove will come in handy for the chef who wants to organize his or her collection of various exotic spices. A pull out tray throughout the base cabinets will allow easy access to the hard-to-reach items inside the storage. For the family baker, a kitchen mixer lift with soft release drop is a perfect add-on accessory. A cabinet electric plug for the built-in mixer lift will be needed, as well as a cookie sheet divider, which can be useful for those in the household who love to organize. The best place to install these dividers is on the top of the 24-inch deep refrigerator wall cabinet. The cookie sheets are large, and they will be easy to slide in and out of the cabinet, which was not originally easy to access. Most importantly, make sure to communicate with the electrician and plumber during the design stages as this can be crucial to the design and functionality of the space.
Built-in appliances are becoming more and more popular these days. They keep the counter more functional and more spacious as possible. A few examples of built-in appliances include microwave built inside the base cabinet, counter flush electric cook top and built-in wall oven with a warming tray.
Regardless of ones preference and style, these options are essential to everyones needs. Keeping these options in mind can help create a functional and useful kitchen space for anyone in the household.

Excelsior Orthopaedics is planning a more than $9 million expansion on its Amherst campus to build a new, larger home for its growing Buffalo Surgery Center.
The new building at 3915 Sheridan Drive, just west of Harlem Road, would house clinical and surgical services in orthopedics, pain management and ophthalmology. The space in the new medical office building is three times the size of the ambulatory surgery centers current home in the practices main building at 3925 Sheridan.
The surgery center would grow from 30 to about 50 employees and would add gastroenterology services as part of its move from 8,000 square feet in the existing building to the 27,960-square-foot, one-story structure planned for the site, David J. Uba, Excelsiors CEO, said Monday.
Moving the surgery center to the new facility frees up space for exam rooms and other clinical services for Excelsior Orthopaedics in the existing building, he said.
Theyve got nowhere to grow inside the building, said John R. Yurtchuk, president of Matrix Development, the developer for the project.
The new Buffalo Surgery Center would be built on the southwest corner of the Excelsior Orthopaedics property. The site is owned by Preferred Equity Partners, a limited liability company controlled by Excelsior and Matrix, which are working together on the expansion.
The partners still are figuring out the final price tag for the project but they expect it to cost between $9 million and $9.5 million, Uba said. Silvestri Architects of Amherst is the architect for the project.
The state Health Department has signed off on the project, Uba said, but the expansion must obtain approval from several agencies in the town. That process begins Thursday, when the project is the subject of a public hearing at the Amherst Planning Board meeting.
The developers are asking the Planning Board to rezone 1.1 acres of the property at 3925 and 3915 Sheridan from residential to office building district and to grant relief from conditions put in place during the approval of the original Excelsior project.
The developers in 2003 agreed to the requirements for green space and minimum setbacks from neighboring homes, and they need the changes to make way for the 165 parking spaces they would add to the 418 spaces already on the property, Uba said. An application filed by the developers with the town argues that the project wont harm neighboring residential properties on Getzville Road, Campus Drive and Campus Drive West.

Four legged visitors spotted in wooded area off Crerar Park
By Mark Newman, News Staff
Julie and Pino DiNardo were enjoying a cup of coffee in the sunroom of their home around 8:30 on a weekday morning in early January when they saw them.
Four coyotes had wandered into their backyard from the adjoining wooded area off Crerar Park in the Upper Wentworth-Pescara Avenue area, just south of the Linc.
First I thought, what a beautiful animal, Julie said. They were absolutely gorgeous and they were very healthy.
Julie, who noted theyve been hearing the nighttime howling of the coyotes for several years, said they saw a coyote for the first time a couple of years ago when they found their now eight-year-old schnoodle (a mix of poodle and schnauzer) Jemma staring down from the backyard deck at a fury intruder.
It was face-to-face, said Julie, who immediately called the dog back in the house.
Julie said having coyotes so close to home is a concern.
Having something that can possibly eat my dog or harm my kids, Im very worried about this, she said, adding there the number of rabbits and squirrels in their backyard has dropped noticeably over the last few years.
The coyote sightings have prompted parents in the area to warn their children to be watchful when outside.
