Ecoshield Pest Control, a company dedicated towards aiding residential and business areas with insects and other rodents, recently began another endeavor to help those in need. They have set up a website in hopes of collecting food and other essential items for those less fortunate.
Exterminate Hunger is an initiative designed by the company to accept donations of non-perishable food items that then get distributed to area families in need throughout the country. To date, they have received more than 6,700 donations from people nationally. In Houston, Exterminate Hunger has collected more than 750 donations.
Hunger is not just an American problem; its everyones problem, said Ecoshield Pest Control CEO Doug Cardon. While many people might think other countries have a greater need, the fact is that one in every six Americans faces that challenge. Millions of Americans are unable to adequately provide for themselves and their families. Frequently, they are hard-working adults or seniors and children who are forced to go without food for several meals, or even days.
Ecoshield Pest Control offices in other states have also overseen successful drives. Drop-off sites in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Corona, California, for example, have gathered more than 1,000 and 2,500 contributions, respectively. The outpouring of support has been tremendous, but it should not stop after the holidays, Cardon said.
We think about those who do not have as much during the holidays, but hunger is a year-round problem, said Cardon. Hunger does not take the rest of the year off. Families have to struggle to find food and that should not be the case. Thats why we have this plan to help those who need it available.
For more information on where to drop off donations, please visit their website at: http://www.exterminatehunger.com; the company website at: http://www.ecoshieldpest.com, call them at: 832-538-1263, visit them at: 2001 Karbach St., Ste. Houston, or make a donation when a company representative makes a house call.
PHOTO CAPTION: There is no better time than right now to get involved with the Exterminate Hunger campaign going on in the area. The project needs the regions assistance in getting non-perishable food items such as cereal and canned goods to those in need.

New legislation affecting the control of rabbits, rats and moles on farms is due to come into force in nine months.
From 26 November, farmers and gamekeepers will need to hold a certificate of competence by law to use alumunium phosphides to control these pests in their burrows even if they have had previous training in this area.
The use of aluminium phosphide products, such as Talunex and Phostoxin, has long been governed and restricted.

However, the new rules introduce a legal requirement for users to be certified under the Plant Protection Products (Sustainable Use) Regulations 2012.
Users will have to hold a City and Guilds Level 2 Award in the safe use of aluminium phosphide for vertebrate pest control.
The qualification has been developed for pest controllers, gamekeepers and farmworkers who use aluminium phosphide to control rats, moles and rabbits and addresses the requirement that users must hold a recognised certificate for the use and purchasing of the product.
It consists of a theory unit, which is assessed by a short exam, and a competence unit, assessed by practical exercises.
The Register of Accredited Metallic Phosphide Standards (Ramps) UK is overseeing the new regulation.

Outdoor living spaces have come a long way from the days when outdoor furnishings meant a few inexpensive folding chairs around a flimsy plastic table.

Gloster's Oyster Reef collection, featuring a teak farmhouse-style table, blends contemporary and rustic.
Today's outdoor chairs might be wrought iron or wrought aluminum, with upholstered seats. The table might be stone or wood or an elegant faux version of either, and would not look out of place inside in the dining room. Add outdoor sound systems, carpets and lighting, and the back yard or balcony can look and feel like an extension of the home.
Designer Michael Berman's Marin collection for Brown Jordan includes a lounge chair in flame suede with leather pillow.
That notion is being ramped up this spring and summer; manufacturers are offering new furniture, textiles and materials that resemble indoor furnishings yet can withstand the elements.
Getting the right look can be tricky. You don't want it to seem as if you just plunked a sofa from the living room down onto the patio.
Here's a look at what's hot for Warm Weather 2015:
VINTAGE MODERN AND ULTRAMODERN: Watch for midcentury modern styling in outdoor pieces to coordinate with this popular interior style. Gloster's Dansk collection (gloster.com) includes a chair with marine-grade, leather-look upholstery and teak tables, designed by Povl Eskildsen.
After World War II, the California designer Walter Lamb was helping salvage sunken warships at Pearl Harbor when he started messing around with the brass tubing and fittings. His prototypical outdoor furniture collection was put into production by Brown Jordan, a Pasadena-based company that pioneered outdoor furniture. Today's versions of Lamb's pieces, available through Design With Reach (dwr.com), are still crafted from brass, which you can leave alone to develop a patina or polish to retain a shine. The seats are marine-grade cording.
